Results of a microscopic model of mixed motorised traffic consisting of short vehicles, (e.g. cars), and long vehicles, (taken to be double the length of the short vehicles), for an urban two-way single lane intersection are presented here. We model the intersection using both signalised and un-signalised stop control rules. The model allows for the detection of bottleneck activity in both homogenous and heterogeneous traffic conditions, and was validated by means of field data collected in Dublin, Ireland. The validated model was used to study the impact of inclusion of long vehicles on traffic performance in an urban environment. Traffic mix is, however, taken to be dominated by short vehicles overall, in argument with observed live data collected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Management of acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been transformed in the last 20 yr by the results of large, prospective, randomized trials. Advances have been made in all components of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) management, from primary and secondary prevention to prehospital care, acute reperfusion therapy, adjunctive medical therapy, and management of complications. Despite this progress, however, acute MI remains the most common cause of death in industrialized nations; in addition, while mortality rates have been falling, the incidence of new infarction has not fallen in concert. The long-term consequences of myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias, consume a large and growing proportion of health care resources. Thus, there is great need for continued progress in the prevention and treatment of acute MI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Distributed Computing Systems (DCS) calls for proper partitioning of tasks into modules and allocating them to various nodes so as to enable parallel execution of their modules by individual different processors of the system. A number of algorithms have been proposed for allocation of tasks in a Distributed Computing System. Most of the models proposed in literature consider modules of a single task for static allocation, for the purpose of allocation onto a DCS. Moreover, they did not consider the architectural capability of the processing nodes and the way of connectivity among them. This work considers allocation of disjoint multiple tasks with their corresponding modules and proposes a parallel algorithm for a realistic situation wherein multiple disjoint tasks with their modules compete for execution on an arbitrarily connected DCS based on well-known A* technique. The proposed algorithm also considers a load balanced allocation for the purpose. The paper justifies the effectiveness of the algorithm with the experimental results by comparing with previously reported works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A chapter from the book "Olympic Countdown: Diary of the Sydney Olympics" is presented. It discusses the effects of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics on Australia's construction industry in the context of environmental sustainability. Issues are raised including the development of guidelines by the Olympic Coordination Authority, the drive of Australian councils to address their local agenda according to the Kyoto Protocol for greenhouse gas reductions, and the concerted efforts of architects, builders, and clients in dealing with environmental issues.
