In der öffentlichen Rede, in politisch-populistischen Debatten und in massenmedialen Berichten ist »Parallelgesellschaft« ein seit Jahren viel strapazierter Begriff. Mit seiner Geschichte politischer Instrumentalisierung geht die Gefahr von Affirmation gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheitsverhältnisse einher. Die Beiträge des Bandes setzen sich im Kontext populärer Musik mit parallel bestehenden, scheinbar unverbundenen Strukturen, Begriffen und Konzepten auseinander. Neben einem Blick auf die deutsch-deutsche Entwicklungsgeschichte der Popular Music Studies werden pop-kulturelle Differenzparadigmen u.a. aus musikwissenschaftlicher, musiksoziologischer, ethnomusikologischer und juristischer Sicht kritisch aufgearbeitet.

Wie gestaltet sich der Zusammenhang von (ver-)geschlechtlichter Erfahrung, Differenz, Alterität und Anderssein? Wie sind (ver-)geschlechtliches Erleben und der körperliche Leib miteinander verschränkt? Und welche Bedeutung haben Unausgesprochenes und Unaussprechbares für die Erfahrung geschlechtlicher Existenzweisen? Die Beiträger*innen widmen sich diesen drei bislang wenig systematisch bearbeiteten Fragen und setzen Erfahrung neu auf die Agenda der Geschlechterforschung. Aus den Perspektiven von Geistes-, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften loten sie Erfahrung als Forschungsgegenstand sowie Analysekategorie aus und legen dessen epistemologisches Potential als Grundlage von Kritik und politischer Praxis offen.

Der Dialog ist für die einen das Versprechen gelingender Kommunikation, für die anderen ein überholtes Ideal. Marten Weise zeigt in einer interdisziplinär angelegten Studie, dass sich die Lücke zwischen Lobpreisungen und Abgesängen schließen lässt. Er setzt bei der Unmöglichkeit des Denkens »nach der Shoah« an und erkundet in exemplarischen Untersuchungen der europäischen Literatur-, Theater- und Theoriegeschichte die Spannungen und Widersprüche im Verhältnis zum »Anderen«, ohne die der Dialog nicht zu greifen ist. So macht er zwischenmenschliche, soziale und politische Vorgänge als prinzipiell unabschließbares Sprachgeschehen fassbar und eröffnet einen Spielraum für die Aushandlung und das Aushalten von Dissens und Differenz.

This volume is dedicated to the relevance of subjectivation research in educational science and related disciplines. It combines basic theoretical and methodological contributions to subjectification research with analyses that focus on gender and race aspects. Bisherige Analysen öffentlicher Debatten zum Islam in Europa haben gezeigt, dass Fragen der Geschlechtergleichstellung im Vordergrund stehen und muslimische Frauen häufig Bilder kollektiver Differenz markieren. Mirjam Aeschbach legt anhand einer detaillierten Analyse aktiver Medienbeiträge muslimischer Diskursakteurinnen von 2016 bis 2019 dar, wie diese in der Öffentlichkeit Bilder nationaler Zugehörigkeit aufgreifen und sich aneignen - und wie diese Bilder so potentiell in Frage gestellt werden.

Gender and sexual diversity is becoming a topic in everyday school life, but still occupies a precarious position in it - this not only affects LGBTIQ* children and young people, but also educational professionals, as this study shows. Based on a critically deconstructive pedagogy and on qualitative interviews with lesbian, gay, bi- and heterosexual as well as inter*, trans* and cisgender teachers, the study reconstructs social patterns of interpretation about how they deal with and address diverse lifestyles at school and in the classroom. In the aftermath of a global pandemic, amidst new and ongoing wars, genocide, inequality, and staggering ecological collapse, some in the public and political arena have argued that we are in desperate need of greater empathy — be this with our neighbours, refugees, war victims, the vulnerable or disappearing animal and plant species. This interdisciplinary volume asks the crucial questions: How does a better understanding of empathy contribute, if at all, to our understanding of others? How is it implicated in the ways we perceive, understand and constitute others as subjects? Conversations on Empathy examines how empathy might be enacted and experienced either as a way to highlight forms of otherness or, instead, to overcome what might otherwise appear to be irreducible differences. It explores the ways in which empathy enables us to understand, imagine and create sameness and otherness in our everyday intersubjective encounters focusing on a varied range of "radical others" – others who are perceived as being dramatically different from oneself. With a focus on the importance of empathy to understand difference, the book contends that the role of empathy is critical, now more than ever, for thinking about local and global challenges of interconnectedness, care and justice.

Räume, in denen der Körper Anlass von Sprache ist, wo Macht verhandelbar ist, wo Kultur(en) gelebt und erfahren werden. Unter Rückgriff auf Homi K. Bhabhas Konzept des dritten Raumes und Martina Löws Konzept der Raumsoziologie befragt Caroline-Sophie Pilling gleichsam Vertreter*innen der Gehörlosen-Community und der Hörenden-Welt zu ihren Perspektiven, wie das Verhältnis Gehörloser und Hörender besser gestaltet werden kann.

Mit Hilfe eines diffraktiven Lesens (Karen Barad) ergeben sich unerwartete Perspektiven und Anordnungen: Neben klassischen Interaktionen werden auch Intra-aktionen aufgedeckt. Diese verweisen darauf, dass Differenzsetzungen situativ sind und andere Geschichten und Figurationen jenseits hegemonialer Einteilungen und Anrufungen eröffnen.

Revisualising Intersectionality offers transdisciplinary interrogations of the supposed visual evidentiality of categories of human similarity and difference. This open-access book incorporates insights from social and cognitive science as well as psychology and philosophy to explain how we visually perceive physical differences and how cognition is fallible, processual, and dependent on who is looking in a specific context. Revisualising Intersectionality also puts into conversation visual culture studies and artistic research with approaches such as gender, queer, and trans studies as well as postcolonial and decolonial theory to complicate simplified notions of identity politics and cultural representation. The book proposes a revision of intersectionality research to challenge the predominance of categories of visible difference such as race and gender as analytical lenses.

This book critically examines multiple ways in which cultural diversity is, and has been represented and handled. It questions the construction of differences in doing culture while emphasizing the fluidity of cultural entanglements. It is an invitation to re-think norms, practices and negotiations of diversity and otherness, to distinguish emancipatory from standardizing approaches and to “transculturalize” the study and the politics of culture.

Arantzazu Saratxaga Arregi beleuchtet den Begriff erstmals systematisch in einer philosophischen Lesart und schafft eine in sich selbst schlüssige philosophische Kategorie: das Matrixiale. Auf der Basis der Wortabstammung - Mutter und Gebärmutter - wird dem Terminus eine eigene semantische Anordnung gegeben: Alle Arten von Müttern bilden in sich eine Gattung, Matrix, deren spezifische Differenz im Gebären besteht. Die Zweideutigkeit des Terminus birgt aber eine ontologische Differenz in sich: Die Differenz zwischen der mütterlichen Weltlichkeit und der gebärmutterlichen Weltlosigkeit. Diese mündet in einer Frage zur ontologischen Mehrwertigkeit.

Based on fieldwork among state officials, NGOs, politicians, and activists in Costa Rica and Brazil, A Future History of Water traces the unspectacular work necessary to make water access a human right and a human right something different from a commodity. Andrea Ballestero shows how these ephemeral distinctions are made through four technolegal devices—formula, index, list and pact. She argues that what is at stake in these devices is not the making of a distinct future but what counts as the future in the first place. A Future History of Water is an ethnographically rich and conceptually charged journey into ant-filled water meters, fantastical water taxonomies, promises captured on slips of paper, and statistical maneuvers that dissolve the human of human rights. Ultimately, Ballestero demonstrates what happens when instead of trying to fix its meaning, we make water’s changing form the precondition of our analyses.

This study presents four ideal-typical orientation patterns when dealing with the issue of belonging., Lehrpersonen sind nicht nur herausgefordert, anerkennend mit sozialen Differenzen und Zugehörigkeiten ihrer Schülerinnen und Schüler umzugehen – sie sind auch selbst in soziale Grenzziehungsprozesse involviert und machen mitunter eigene Erfahrungen von Begrenzung oder prekarisierter Zugehörigkeit. Carola Mantel rekonstruiert, inwiefern diese Erfahrungen lebens- und berufsgeschichtlich prägend sind und wie Lehrende daraus Orientierungsmuster für ihr pädagogisches Handeln ableiten. Sie identifiziert vier idealtypische Zusammenhangsstrukturen bei Primarlehrpersonen der zweiten Einwanderungsgeneration in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz.

This volume investigates the process of learning how to live with individual and group differences in the twenty-first century and examines the ambivalences of contemporary cosmopolitanism. Engaging with the concept of ‘critical cartography’, it emphasizes the structural impact of localities on the experiences of those living with difference, while trying to develop an account of the counter-mappings that follow spatial and social transformations in today’s world. The contributors focus on visual, normative and cultural embodiments of difference, examining dynamic conflicts at local sites that are connected by the processes of Europeanization and globalization. The collection explores a wide range of topics, including conflicting claims of sexual minorities and conservative Christians, the relationship between national identity and cosmopolitanism, and the ways that cross-cultural communication and bilingualism can help us to understand the complex nature of belonging. The authors come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and all contribute to a vernacular reading of cosmopolitanism and transnationalism, aimed at opening up new avenues of research into living with difference.
