30. Multimodal Classification of Activities of Daily Living Inside Smart Homes.

Abstract

Smart homes for the aging population have recently started attracting the attention of the research community. One of the problems of interest is this of monitoring the activities of daily living (ADLs) of the elderly aiming at their protection and well-being. In this work, we present our initial efforts to automatically recognize ADLs using multimodal input from audio-visual sensors. For this purpose, and as part of Integrated Project Netcarity, far-field microphones and cameras have been installed inside an apartment and used to collect a corpus of ADLs, acted by multiple subjects. The resulting data streams are processed to generate perception-based acoustic features, as well as human location coordinates that are employed as visual features. The extracted features are then presented to Gaussian mixture models for their classification into a set of predefined ADLs. Our experimental results show that both acoustic and visual features are useful in ADL classification, but performance of the latter deteriorates when subject tracking becomes inaccurate. Furthermore, joint audio-visual classification by simple concatenative feature fusion significantly outperforms both unimodal classifiers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Environmental Content Creation and Visualisation in the `Future Internet΄.

Abstract

This paper presents a model-based photo registration system for the creation and visualization of environmental content. We utilize freely available Digital Terrain Models of the planet, such as those provided by NASA, to generate a three-dimensional synthetic model around a viewer΄s location. Using an array of image processing algorithms we then align photographs to this model. We will demonstrate the precision of the resulting system through the overlaying of Internet content (such as mountain names and GPS tracks), into geo-referenced photos. Abstract

This paper presents a technology capable of enabling the creation of a diffuse, calibrated vision-sensor network from the wealth of socially generated geo-referenced imagery, freely available on the Internet. Through the implementation of an accurate image registration system, based on image processing, terrain modelling and subsequent correlation, we will demonstrate how images taken by the public can potentially be used as a mean to gather environmental information from a unique, ground-level viewpoint normally denied non-terrestrial sensors (consider vertical or overhanging cliffs). The research detailed in this paper represents the confluence of various vision technologies to provide a powerful, real-time tool for human behavioural analysis. Gesture recognition algorithms are amalgamated with a robust multi-person tracker based on particle filtering to monitor the position and orientation of multiple people, and moreover to understand their focus of attention and gesticular activity. Abstract

This paper focuses on the integration of acoustic and visual information for people tracking. The system presented relies on a probabilistic framework within which information from multiple sources is integrated at an intermediate stage. An advantage of the method proposed is that of using a generative approach which supports easy and robust integration of multi source information by means of sampled projection instead of triangulation. Abstract

What can relics of the past tell us about the thoughts and beliefs of the people who invented and used them? Recent collaborations at the frontier of archaeology, anthropology, and cognitive science are culminating in speculative but nevertheless increasingly sophisticated efforts to unravel how modern human cognition came about. By considering objects within their archaeological context, we have begun to piece together something of the way of life of people who inhabited particular locales, which in turn reflects their underlying thought processes. Comparing data between different sites or time periods tells us something about the horizontal (within generation) or vertical (between generations) transmission of material culture. In addition to patterns of transmission of existing kinds of artifacts, we are also interested in novel artifacts that might be indicative of new cognitive abilities, belief structures, or levels of cooperation. An archaeological period marked by the sudden appearance of many kinds of new objects may suggest the onset of enhanced creative abilities. By corroborating archaeological findings with anthropological data (evidence of sudden change in the size or shape of the cranium, for example) with knowledge from cognitive science about how minds function, we can make educated guesses as to what kinds of underlying cognitive changes could be involved, and how the unique abilities of Homo sapiens arose. In this chapter, we consider three questions about human cognition that can be addressed through archaeological data: (1) How did human culture begin? (2) Where, when, and how did humans acquire the unique cognitive abilities of modern Homo sapiens? and (3) What role do artifacts play in the evolution of these cognitive abilities?
