Chapter 3 of the book "Cuba in Revolution: A History Since the Fifties" is presented. It explores the political revolution initiated by rebel leader Che Guevara in Cuba to remove the vestiges of "Batistato" or Batista's rule and abolish the old system. It also highlights the emergence of mass organizations in the country such as the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), the National Revolutionary Militias (MNR), and the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR).

Chapter 1 of the book "Cuba in Revolution: A History Since the Fifties" is presented. It explores the five decades of the Cuban Revolution into a series of phases including 1959-60/61, 1961-65/68, and the mid-1960s-1970/71. Aging Cuban-American organizations have set up military training camps, as they have for the last thirty years every time it looked like the revolution was faltering. Added to the exile's arsenal are government committees studying ways of quickening demise of the Cuban government and its bracing for the imminent impact that such changes bring to south Florida. There is no doubt that Cuba's government is at a crossroads. A critical part of its international economic and political frame of reference is allegedly in flux. All over the world, state-controlled planned economies are decentralizing and privatizing. One-party political structures are giving way to multi-party representation. The ideological and practical aspects of such changes are beginning to have a profound impact on Cuban society. Nevertheless, at least two important facts differentiate the Cuban situation. First, Cuba's government came to power through a popular revolution, which is a factor not present at least in the case of the nations of Eastern Europe.

The article provides an overview of the political, economic and social conditions in Cuba and an assessment of the political rights and civil liberties in the country from 1997 to 1998. Cuba under President Fidel Castro has one of the highest per capita rates of imprisonment for political offenses of any country in the world. The educational system, the judicial system, labor unions, professional organizations and all media remain state-controlled. In early June 1997, the government issued new rules regulating the activities of foreign correspondents. Freedom of movement, and to choose one's residence, education or job are severely restricted.
