Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on the Management of collections and co-operation in the hybrid library, which was organised in Florence on 13 October 2005 by the Italian Libraries Association (Tuscan Section and University and Research Committee). The contributions are dedicated in particular to grasping the opportunities and adaptations generated by Internet and the possibility of disseminating electronic documents, both in the development of the collections and the planning of services and in the study of new forms of communication between institutions., Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno su Gestione delle raccolte e cooperazione nella biblioteca ibrida, organizzato a Firenze il 13 ottobre 2005 dall'Associazione Italiana Biblioteche (Sezione Toscana e Commissione Università e Ricerca). I contributi sono dedicati in particolare a cogliere le opportunità e le modifiche dovute ad Internet e alla possibilità di diffondere documenti elettronici sia nello sviluppo delle raccolte, sia nella pianificazione dei servizi, sia nello studio di nuove forme di cooperazione fra istituzioni.

This book recounts the phases in the set-up of the new Library of Social Sciences of the University of Florence. The move provided the opportunity for bringing together the collections that were scattered over seven service points and in about a dozen other sites closed to the public. At the same time, it provided the opportunity for reconsidering the services on offer, reorganising them on the basis of the characteristics of the new site. The first section tells how the library was conceived and planned, with the librarians' working groups preparing the move and projecting the changes to be made in the new site. The second part tackles the problems of organisation and management of the services in the new library., Il volume racconta le tappe dell'allestimento della nuova Biblioteca di Scienze Sociali dell'Università di Firenze. Il trasloco è stata l'occasione per riaggregare collezioni che si trovavano sparse in sette punti di servizio e in una decina di altre sedi chiuse al pubblico. Allo stesso tempo è stata l'opportunità di ripensare i servizi offerti, riorganizzandoli sulla base delle caratteristiche della nuova sede. Nella prima parte si racconta come si è arrivati ad immaginare e progettare la biblioteca con i gruppi di lavoro dei bibliotecari che preparavano il trasloco proiettando i cambiamenti nella nuova sede. Nella seconda parte si affrontano i problemi di organizzazione e gestione dei servizi nella nuova biblioteca.

Attraverso ripetuti sopralluoghi e un lungo lavoro di confronto, non solo sono stati catalogati i volumi conservati presso l'istituzione di Kavála, ma è stata quasi interamente ricostruita anche la composizione dell'intera biblioteca, individuando ulteriori fondi ad essa appartenenti. Inoltre la ricerca esamina le implicazioni utili a delineare sia il profilo culturale dell'Istituzione, sia una fase storica particolare per le innovazioni metodologiche e contenutistiche introdotte nella trasmissione del sapere nel mondo islamico. This book illustrates the history of the Library of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the University of Florence, tracing it from the origins up to the present: “from the pen to the computer”, against the backdrop of Florence from unification to the threshold of the third millennium. The Library is inserted in the historic and geographical context in which it emerged, with references to the political and economic situation of Tuscany starting from the end of the Grand Duchy., Il volume illustra la storia della Biblioteca della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell'Università di Firenze, tracciandone il profilo dalle origini ai giorni nostri: "dalla penna all'elaboratore", in una Firenze dall'unità alle soglie del 2000. La Biblioteca è inserita nel contesto storico geografico all'interno del quale è nata, con riferimenti alla situazione politica ed economica della Toscana, a partire dalla fine del Granducato.

Activities for the evaluation of the Florence University Library System have recently materialised in a customer satisfaction survey. The book recounts this experience and illustrates its premises, the phases of implementation, the statistical and library science methods. The survey represents the final stage of an itinerary launched through the reorganisation of the library system in 1994. From that year on, the practice of monitoring has been confirmed as an essential element of the management process. After several years devoted to the enhancement of quality, the users have been invited to express their views on the services apropos effective use and the degree of satisfaction., L'attività di valutazione del Sistema Bibliotecario dell'Ateneo di Firenze si è di recente concretizzata in un'indagine di customer satisfaction. Il libro racconta questa esperienza e ne illustra le premesse, le fasi di realizzazione, le metodologie statistiche e biblioteconomiche. L'indagine costituisce il punto di arrivo di un percorso inaugurato con la riorganizzazione nel 1994 del Sistema Bibliotecario. Da tale anno la pratica del monitoraggio si è affermata come momento essenziale del processo di gestione. Dopo alcuni anni dedicati al miglioramento della qualità, gli utenti sono stati invitati a esprimersi sui servizi, in relazione all'utilizzo effettivo e al grado di soddisfazione.

There is no general legislative framework for theses, although a number of solutions have been devised at local level which may be significant for Italian university librarians. The problems are numerous and of different kinds: technical, copyright-related and also more strictly bound up with library science, such as cataloguing, conservation and access. Each library appears to have devised original approaches, and it is important to make these known in order to offer suggestions for the treatment of this documentary heritage that is still difficult to access., Per le tesi manca un quadro legislativo generale e sono state elaborate alcune soluzioni a livello locale che possono essere importanti per i bibliotecari italiani delle Università. I problemi sono molteplici: tecnici, di copyright, ma anche più strettamente connessi alla biblioteconomia, come catalogazione, conservazione, accesso. Ogni biblioteca sembra aver trovato vie originali, ed è importante renderle note per dare suggerimenti per il trattamento di questo patrimonio documentale ancora di difficile accesso.
