This paper puts forward a method using laser scanner and computer aided design and computer aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology which are commonly used in reverse engineering to reconstruct three dimensional (3D) facial model, so as to provide personal 3D model for reconstructive surgery and man-machine system design. The process of reverse engineering is described in detail. Commercial laser scanner is used to acquire thousands of 3D discrete points of a facial plaster model. The "cloud of point" file is used to build a 3D facial model. The different of 3D facial model we build composed of different quantity of surface. We compared the different 3D facial models with the "cloud of point", the accuracy is from 0.2mm to 0.01mm. The maximum errors are located in the area where curvatures are maximum. All the result is quite satisfactory for facial reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation design. Minimizing the quantity of surface according to facial character and not decrease accuracy is a focus for future work. This method is simple and wieldy, and can be used in other centres for a variety of application, such as artificial limb design, man-machine system design, virtual operation etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
