Abstract

The book addresses issues in meeting the educational needs of disruptive students. In the introduction, R. Sarri examines the rise of alternative schools and discusses common elements in their design and operation. D. Sabatino follows with "Issues and Concerns: Problems with Alternative Schools," in which he examines the particular difficulties involved in evaluating alternative programs. Four alternative programs are described in depth: Learning Center II, a program administered jointly by the local education agency and the Washington State Juvenile Rehabilitation Division; Bellefaire School (Cleveland, Ohio), an integrated program of group living, education, and psychotherapy; Longfellow Education Center (Minneapolis, Minnesota), designed for multiply handicapped students with severe emotional disturbances; and Special People Realizing Individual New Goals (Atlanta, Georgia), an approach to teaching survival skills to senior high disturbed students. 19. Ontology-Based Knowledge Management in Automotive Engineering Scenarios.

Abstract

Nowadays the increasing complexity of cars has become a major challenge for car manufacturers, especially due to the growing rate of electronic components and software. This trend impacts all phases of the car's lifecycle, e.g. the process of testing cars and components. We describe a project from the automotive industry where a semantics-based approach is employed for improving the process of testing different configurations of cars. Here, ontologies serve two main purposes: (i) representing and sharing knowledge to optimize business processes for testing of cars and (ii) integrating live data into this optimization process. The ontology has been created and is now maintained with OntoStudio®. The ontology has been integrated into the internal order system of the car manufacturer to reduce the communication effort between the engineers for configuring test cars and to avoid misconfigurations of test cars. 22. Halo I: A Controlled Experiment for Large Scale Knowledge Base Development.

Abstract

Project Halo is a multi-staged effort, sponsored by Vulcan Inc, aimed at creating the Digital Aristotle (DA), an application that will encompass much of the world's scientific knowledge and be capable of applying sophisticated problem solving to answer novel questions. Vulcan envisions two primary roles for the Digital Aristotle: as a tutor to instruct students in the sciences, and as an interdisciplinary research assistant to help scientists in their work. As a first step towards this goal, there was a six-month Pilot phase, designed to assess the state of the art in applied Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR&R). Vulcan selected three teams, each of which was to formally represent 70 pages from the Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry syllabus and deliver knowledge based systems capable of answering questions on that syllabus. The evaluation quantified each system's coverage of the syllabus in terms of its ability to answer novel, previously unseen questions and to provide human-readable answer justifications. These justifications will play a critical role in building user trust in the question-answering capabilities of the Digital Aristotle.Despite differences in approach, all three systems did very well on the challenge, achieving performance comparable to the human median. The analysis also provided key insights into how the approaches might be scaled, while at the same time suggesting how the cost of producing such systems might be reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In former days Tim Berners-Lee proposed a soon breakthrough of the Semantic Web. As a breakthrough he considered every second web page to be connected to an ontology. In the mean time we have seen a lot of applications of semantic technologies, like semantic web services, semantic information integration, and ontology based search for documents. However it seems also clear that the forecast of TBL did not (yet) arrive. While in the last years there has always been great academic interest in Semantic Web and in semantic technologies and even first industrial products appeared, we did not see the industrial breakthrough of Semantic Web technologies. On the other hand there was a strong increasing interest in other trends like SOA architectures, Web 2.0 etc. which ruled out Semantic Web in publicity and in connected activities like new product developments, foundations of new companies, and money involved. The question arises what are the reasons for that and which of these newer trends could have an influence on the further development of semantic technologies. While so far the Semantic Web was driven to a large extent from the academic side, its future acceptance and relevance to the industrial world heavily depends on whether the future development of Semantic Web technologies is influenced by industry needs rather than pure academic ones. This becomes essential and will decide whether semantic technologies are considered as relevant technology and will be used in future industrial applications and products. In actual industry applications, it was proved that the combination of trendy topics like SOA and Web 2.0 with intelligent features of semantic technologies generates large impact for the industrial and business world and thereof - the breakthrough of the Corporate Semantic Web.
