Abstract

Chapter 5 of the book "Guidelines for Safe Recreational Water Environments" is presented. It discusses the free-living microorganisms indigenous to recreational water environments and the diseases that they may cause. The human pathogenic Vibrio species causes cholera and gastrointestinal disease. The V. alginolyticus causes soft tissue infections while the V. cholerae causes gastroenteritis. Other microorganisms are V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, aeromonas species and free-living amoebae.
