Abstract

This paper1 reviews the main results obtained so far by the VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) collaboration. The VVDS is one of the leading extragalactic surveys, started in 2002 using GTO awarded for the construction of VIMOS-VLT. Its aim is to study the evolution of galaxies, large-scale structures, and AGNs from a goal sample of ∼100,000 objects down to a magnitude I(AB)=24, with redshifts measured using VIMOS-VLT (typically in the range 0 < z < 5), and a wide wavelength coverage from different follow-up observations. Among the most important results achived by the VVDS so far are the redshift distributions for different galaxy populations, the evolution of the galaxy Luminosity Function in various filter bands (as a function of redshift, galaxy type, and environment), the evolution of the typedensity relation with redshfit, and the clustering properties from z ∼ 2. One of the most impressive findings of the VVDS using a pure magnitude-selected sample is the existence of an important population of bright galaxies at 1.6 < z < 5, 1.6 to 6.2 times larger than previous estimates based on color preselections (LBG technique). Abstract

Planetary Nebulae (PNe) have enabled mass-to-light ratios (M/L) in earlytype galaxies to be constrained to unprecedented distance from the center, showing in some cases clear evidence of increasing M/L, in other cases fairly constant M/L. We combine the information obtained from PN kinematics with radially extended long-slit spectroscopy data in order to constrain the M/L trends in a heterogeneous sample of early-type galaxies. We discuss whether these trends are expected in the ΛCDM framework of galaxy formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, we have observed and measured the velocities for 2764 PNe in the disk and halo of the Andromeda galaxy. Preliminary analysis using a basic ring model shows a rotation curve in good agreement with that obtained from Hi data out to ~20 kpc. Some substructure has also been detected within the velocity field, which can be modeled as the continuation of the tidal-Cremnant known as the Southern Stream, as it passes through Andromeda's disk. Abstract

The aim of the VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) is to study of the evolution of galaxies, large scale structures and AGNs from a sample of more than 150,000 galaxies with measured redshifts in the range $0 \le z \le 5+$. The VVDS will rely on the VIMOS and NIRMOS wide field multi-object spectrographs, which the VIRMOS consortium is delivering to ESO. Together, they offer unprecedented multiplex capability in the wavelength range $0.37 - 1.8\mu$m, allowing for large surveys to be carried out. The VVDS has several main aspects: (1) a deep multi-color imaging survey over 18deg2 of more than one million galaxies, (2) a "wide" spectroscopic survey with more than 130,000 redshifts measured for objects brighter than IAB = 22.5 over 18deg2, (3) a "deep" survey with 50,000 redshifts measured to IAB = 24, (4) "ultra-deep" surveys with several thousand redshifts measured to IAB = 25, (5) multi-wavelength observations with the VLA and XMM.
