This chapter takes the position that the point of translating texts is to open up works from the past and make them accessible to people today. In considering the accessibility of texts, we should also consider the gender of the pronouns we use, without neutering them from their original meaning. In his essay on the Afterlife (al-Adhawiyya fi al-ma`ad), Ibn Sina considers where a person (insan) believes her essence resides. This chapter uses huwa, the masculine singular pronoun to indicate humans in general. Grammatically speaking the indefinite pronoun huwa which Ibn Sina uses is masculine singular. Arabic grammar requires him to use marked speech in all verbs and pronouns. If Ibn Sina΄s purpose is to investigate the reality of being human – why a human is human – then his project in contemporary translation should reflect the inclusion of female persons as well as male persons. We may take a cue from the Qur΄an itself which specifically addresses both believing male Muslims and believing female Muslims (S. 33.35) after women objected to being lumped with men grammatically. It is a common and unexamined assumption among practitioners of philosophy that there is only one possible correct translation into English of classical Arabic philosophy. Rather, I argue translation from classical Arabic into English is not a one-to-one proposition and the translator is justified in alternating the gender of the indefinite pronouns as part of her interpretive work. In this chapter, I argue that Said Nursi, a contemporary Turkish theologian, offers a new theological perspective on theodicy centered on Divine Names Theology. In order to show the novelty of his perspective, I discuss his ideas on the justification of evils and sufferings as God΄s wise plan with respect to certain critical questions: notably God΄s definition, the nature of evil and its origin, the ontological relation between evil and non-existence, the nature of free will and its role in evil, the theological difference between the creation of evil and acqusition of evil, the meaning of life, the origin of such a world of duality, and the relationship of worship with evil and sufferings. Chapter 3 of the book "Is Democracy Possible Here? Principles for a New Political Debate," by Ronald Dworkin is presented. The debate during the Renaissance over the immortality of the soul encompassed epistemology, metaphysics, and theology. The metaphysical question was whether there is something spiritual that gives life to human beings, such that they are endowed with an ontological status superior to animals and a lasting reality. If this is true, then there is a human soul that transcends the perishable body. But a problemarises: what is the evidence for this, and what does it mean for man to be essentially spiritual? If one were to deny the need for any ontological difference between beasts and men - and that would entail abolishing the principle of life or soul as something distinct from body - then the fact of consciousness and truth over and beyond particular beings demands explanation. Hence an epistemological problem arises from the metaphysical one. For the mere possibility that animation and spirit might be illusions or misconceptions of life and thought raises a question of epistemology. This, however, is not to be pursued in terms of formal logic, but by way of reflection upon the working of the human mind inasmuch as it seems to be the “place” (or subject) where claims are proffered that transcend particulars and where reflexivity seems to reside. The question is, then, whether the “place” of truth is coextensive with truth itself, and - supposing truth has an ontological status beyond that of physical things - whether the mind or intellect as this “place” shares that ontological status. MEDICAL WISDOM When the medieval doctor looked into the past for the beginnings of his own profession, what he found was the figure of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine in the medical tradition from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. Modern scholarship has not revealed much about the historical Hippocrates or which of the ‘Hippocratic’ works were written by him, but the medieval doctor felt more secure in his knowledge. The Hippocratic works gave him a number of things. There was technical advice in a practical subject, which told him what to do and what to expect. For instance, the corpus includes works that explain how to reduce dislocations and how to bandage wounds. The Hippocratic works were also valuable because they were Hippocratic, that is, ancient and authoritative in an age that revered antiquity. These first two chapters are not directly concerned with the first of these aspects of antiquity, the technical content of Greek medicine and philosophy. They are not, that is, a background to or an early history of a professional activity developed during the Middle Ages and beyond. Rather, they present an image of the medieval and later perception of antiquity, a construction (however false in our historical terms) within the Latin tradition and on which the later Western doctors based their actions.
