- Abstract
This two-volume guide is designed to make subject encyclopedias more accessible. To qualify for inclusion, an encyclopedia must meet the following criteria: new or revised edition published since 1990; coverage by subject (not primarily biographical or geographical); intended audience of high school students, college students, and adults; published in the English language; and reviewed in one or more professional library journals. Part 1 provides a collection development tool for selecting among 1,129 subject encyclopedias published between 1990 and 1997. Encyclopedia entries are arranged by partial Library of Congress (LC) classification number; each entry includes a bibliographic citation, citations to reviews and awards from key library journals, a numerical review average, approximate number of OCLC holdings, and a rating. A title index, LC subject headings index, Dewey classification index, publisher index, and rating index are also provided. Part II is a keyword index to specific articles from 98 subject encyclopedias, selected from the entries in Part I because they are well-suited to helping library users begin their research. To help library researchers locate those subject encyclopedias focusing on one subject, the names of all the subject encyclopedias in Part I are also indexed. Alphabetically arranged by keyword, each entry provides the encyclopedia's partial LC classification number and each article's citation. (AEF)
