Founded in 1966 at Florida State University by Louis Shores, the quarterly Journal of Library History moved to the University of Texas at Austin in 1976 and continues to be published by the University of Texas Press. It was renamed Libraries & Culture in 1988. While there has been some continuity in the Florida and Texas years, during the former period the journal seemed linked more to the library profession, whereas during the Texas years it has been linked more to the literary humanities and the history professions. It presently strives to be an interdisciplinary journal that explores the significance of collections of recorded knowledge--their creation, organization, preservation, and utilization--in the context of cultural and social history, unlimited as to time and place. The history of this unique journal is intertwined with the evolution of library history in the last third of the twentieth century. (Contains 24 endnotes.) (Author/MES)

This document is based on transcripts of recorded informal interviews with: (1) selected senior professors in the library schools at Warsaw, Krakow, and Wroclaw (Poland); (2) the director and a member of the Books and Readers Institute of the National Polish Libraries; and (3) a group of Polish librarians and students in the field. The report incorporates feedback and suggestions from the participants themselves. It provides background on the history of libraries and librarianship in Poland and summarizes interviewees' opinions topics such as the development of a philosophy of librarianship; the educational and cultural role of libraries; impacts of the social and political climate on libraries; government interference in communications; library research methodology; and various aspects of library work. This document is the 16th issue of an annual series of bibliographic work in New Zealand. The first section, "Bibliographical Work in Progess at June 1995," is compiled from a questionnaire mailed to bibliographers who are listed in the 1993 and 1994 issues and who have not since published; and to educational, government, medical, special, and large public libraries in New Zealand. Entries from the 1994 issue for which details have not been re-confirmed are marked. The second section, "Bibliographies Published Since June 1994," is compiled from the following: submissions from librarians and bibliographers, entries in the "New Zealand National Bibliography" (July 1994-June 1995) and "Index New Zealand" (July 1994-June 1995), library accessions lists, and bibliographies received by the University of Waikato Library, as well as a few titles published prior to June 1994 which have not been listed in earlier issues. Entries are listed only once and arranged under the following broad section headings: general bibliographies, special classes of material, and librarianship; philosophy and religion; social sciences; biological and medical sciences; agriculture, forestry and fisheries; engineering, domestic, and applied sciences; arts; recreation and sport; language and literature; geography, history, and area studies; and personal bibliography. In recognition of the centennial of the College of Information Studies at Drexel University (Pennsylvania), the history of the school is reviewed by a former dean, with reference to anecdotes and exemplary events. Drexel opened in 1891 and began its library science training program the following year. The founding years through 1921 were followed by a period of professional training in a genteel tradition of solid practical preparation. The era from 1949 to 1967 was one of expansion that saw the birth of information science. From 1968 through 1987 the school diversified, rebuilt, and strengthened, changing its name to the School of Library and Information Science in 1978 and to the College of Information Studies in 1984, when a baccalaureate degree (BS) was added. The BS degree was the major curricular innovation of the second half of the school's life and has done much to strengthen the overall program. (SLD)

This directory provides a chronological and analytical history of the library and information science research projects funded by the Higher Education Act (HEA) Title II-B, Research and Demonstration Program, from 1976 through 1986. It is noted that this program authorizes grants and contracts to institutions of higher education and other public and private agencies to support research and/or demonstrations for the improvement of library and information science and for the dissemination of information derived from such programs. During the early years, the principal goal was general research support with some emphasis on technology; program emphasis shifted during the 1970s to include education for the handicapped, innovation and pluralism in education, career education development, and elimination of racial, ethnic, and cultural barriers to education. In response to these concerns, the library research program took cognizance of social issues in attempts to (1) determine the needs and requirements of Americans who may not have access to adequate library and information services, and (2) to mobilize total community resources to improve the quality of life for the general public. This report provides a project record for each of the 93 projects funded by HEA Title II-B, R and D, over the 10-year period. Each record contains the institution and its address, principal investigator, contract or grant number, dollar value, the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) number if available, an abstract, and a list of descriptors. The projects are listed in chronological order, and the indexes provide access to the project descriptions via four categories: Subjects (Descriptors), Titles, Institutions (performing organizations), and Principal Investigators. In addition, three statistical appendices provide information relating to the annual funding level of the entire program, types of performing organizations funded, and major subject areas funded. This 259-item bibliography is a compilation of books, articles, technical reports, and conference proceedings which deal with the preservation of books and paper materials through mass deacidification. Materials of historical interest from scientific, library science, and "popular" works have been included. The material is arranged in chronological blocks since specific users may wish to consult the most recent literature. The citations in the first section are basic works on deacidification and are included because of their historical importance. Subsequent sections, beginning with works up to 1969, are arranged in chronological order by 5-year priods through 1984, and yearly, thereafter, to 1990. Concluding the bibliography is an author index for those seeking specific works. It is expected that this bibliography will be updated as new material becomes available. (MAB)

This booklet was prepared as a point of reference for the delegates to the White House Conference to familiarize them with the meanings of library and information science related acronyms and terms. The first of three sections of the booklet provides a list of selected acronyms and their meanings. A glossary of selected terms related to library and information services is presented in the second section, and the third includes a list of the types of libraries and information facilities to be found in the United States. Lacking a regional library school in the 1930s, librarians of the Maritime Library Institute (MLI) did not view themselves as inferior to the "trained librarians" of central Canada, but crafted a professional identity through mutual support and shared expertise. This essay discusses creation of the MLI; transforming the Maritime Library Association (MLA); defining professional credentials; and professional development and professional identity in the Maritimes. Through American Library Association (ALA) projects in Latin America, American librarianship progressed from conceptualization to implementation as the model in modernizing Latin American library practices and societies. Development of library practices was fundamental to pursuit of a "modern" society. In fighting fascist propaganda, the United States portrayed itself since World War II as a "modern" model whose prosperity and economic growth were important achievements achievable in a democratic way. Reviews the history of United States librarianship. Suggests that the profession has failed to analyze the meaning of library service and its significance to users. This annotated bibliography containing 132 references is intended to contribute to the understanding of Dr. Frances Lander Spain's role in the history of American librarianship. Dr. Spain was Children's Librarian at the New York Public Library for 8 years; President of the American Library Association in 1960-61; Woman of the Year in Library Science in 1961; and particularly noted for founding modern library science in Thailand. Included in the bibliography are articles, publications edited, book reviews, unpublished writings and sources, contributions to publications, biographical information, criticism, and portraits. Some of the materials are aids in teaching about libraries: library skills, library concepts, library functions. The ERIC Clearinghouse on Information Resources at Stanford University presents a compilation of bibliographies, articles, and information about the Educational Resources Information Center in a bicentennial salute to United States libraries. Bibliographies include a list of subject guides to information in a variety of formats, a bicentennial collection on the American revolution compiled by the Illinois Library Association, and a bibliography of bibliographies of American Indian materials for adults. The conclusion from the final draft of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science's "A National Program for Library and Information Services" is reprinted, as are an article on the Ohio College Library Center (from "Library Resources and Technical Services") and one on Stanford University's BALLOTS system (from "Journal of Library Automation"). This report presents the results of a project designed to assist the Department of Education, Office of Libraries and Learning Technologies (OLLT), and the wider community serves to identify research priorities for the 1980s in the field of library and information science. The rationale for establishing a national research agenda for the 1980s is discussed, and definitions of library science, information science, and research are presented. The project design and methodology are described, with special emphasis on the nature and function of the centerpiece of the project, a 3-day meeting at which carefully selected library and information science professionals evaluated and ranked topics for research in order to establish a Research Agenda. A summary report of this meeting is included as well as the Research Agenda, which is made up of 20 projects in four broad areas, and discussion of interpretations and possible uses of the Research Agenda. A list of meeting participants, 13 tables, and a 55-item bibliography accompany the text. Appended to the report are the results of a literature scan on library information science research, full descriptions of research agenda projects, and summaries of non-agenda projects. (JL)

Fellowships awarded under the Library Career Training Program (Title II-B of the Higher Education Act of 1965), were studied to determine the impact of the program on the library and information science profession, as well as to identify the accomplishments of past recipients. Most recipients entered the program during 1965-1970, a period of full-funding. Information was obtained on: the professional positions held for all the doctoral and post-master's recipients and 10 percent of the master's recipients; recipients' contributions to the profession; and the effect of changes in the program in 1971. Attention was directed to the recipients' employers, employment status, employment level, publishing productivity, and honors/recognition. A strong record of achievement, particularly among doctoral recipients, was found along with entry into the profession of a substantial number of minority group librarians. Among doctoral and post-master's recipients, about one-third were employed in library schools, slightly under two-thirds in libraries, and the remaining in other information-related organizations. Included are an annotated bibliography of about 45 publications; statistical findings; and a list of the publications to which recipients contributed, with author and citation frequencies. (SW)

During the last decade, research has become increasingly important to the profession of librarianship. Seven library schools now have doctoral programs, foundation grants have stimulated and supported scores of major projects, and the research method has been recognized as an accepted technique for solving library problems. The increasing volume of research has caused a serious difficulty: information about completed studies and active investigations is so widely scattered that it is not easily accessible. In this bulletin, a compilation of a major segment of completed research has been assembled for the first time. The abstracts included in this publication furnish a single source of information about doctoral research relating to library science from 1925 to 1960. All dissertations accepted by library schools accredited by the American Library Association were automatically included. Dissertations written in other university departments were included when they treated a central facet of librarianship. In 1917 the Office of Education first published a compilation of the lists of institutions accredited by national, regional, and State accrediting agencies, and has issued a revision of this publication at approximately 4-year intervals. This edition is the eighth in the series, the last previous edition having been issued in 1944. The purpose for which this bulletin is issued is to provide information to college and university officers, State department of education officials, and college and high school students about accredited higher institutions. Increasingly Federal Government agencies are using the bulletin to aid in various phases of their work. Periodic revisions are necessary to record changes that occur in the lists of accredited institutions, in the standards or criteria by which the agencies evaluate institutions, and in the agencies responsible for accrediting. Since the publication of the 1944 edition, recognized accrediting agencies have extended their activities into the fields of the technical institutes, Bible colleges, and schools and departments of public health. The lists reproduced in this bulletin were those furnished by the accrediting agencies as of October 1948. This bulletin is divided into two parts. Part I contains a compilation of universities, colleges, junior colleges, and teacher-training institutions accredited by the Association of American Universities, by the regional associations and by State agencies. Part II contains lists of professional and technical schools, some or all of the units of which are accredited by or hold membership in the appropriate organization. Accreditation of undergraduate engineering curricula is given in tabular form. Accreditation of the technical institute type of program by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development is presented as a list with accredited curricula indicated. The present bulletin on Accredited Higher Institutions contains the lists of universities and colleges, junior colleges, and teacher-training institutions accredited by: (1) the national and regional accrediting associations and by (2) State universities and State departments of education. It also contains lists of the schools of architecture, business, dentistry, journalism, law, library science, medicine, music, and pharmacy accredited, approved, or classified by the national organization representing each of these groups of schools. The lists of colleges, junior colleges, and teacher-training institutions are accompanied by either the standards which each agency uses in judging the institutions or, in the lack of such standards in the case of the State accrediting agencies, by a brief statement concerning the credit given by the State university or the State department of education to the work of the several types of schools. As the standardizing of the professional and technical schools is undertaken by a single agency in each field, the standards for these institutions are omitted in each case. An index is included. This bulletin is virtually a new edition of the work entitled "Special collections of American libraries," by William Coolidge Lane and Charles Knowles Bolton, published in 1892. Since the publication of that most important contribution to American library literature there have been several surveys of a local character published. While these surveys are of fundamental importance, in the scientific organization of our libraries a national survey is of even greater importance, because it is only by such a survey that collections of general value may be distinguished from those of merely local value and that the results of all local surveys may be generally known. It was for these reasons that the Commissioner of Education, in collecting the library statistics of the year 1908, determined to secure also information regarding special collections in libraries in the United States, and with that in view issued a circular, dated November 2, 1908, asking librarians to describe (1) any collections of books, pamphlets, periodicals, and documents in their libraries which were of unusual value either because of their completeness in foreign literature or early literature of a subject or because the works in them were monumental in character or of unusual rarity; (2) collections of interest primarily because of their history and associations; (3) unique copies of any book. This circular was sent to 2,298 libraries. In preparing the returns for publication very much has, of course, been omitted, and perhaps more might have been omitted with profit. It seemed better, however, to err on the side of inclusiveness. It also seemed better to arrange the material by subject matter rather than by place, although this plan involved more editorial labor. It should be added that these statistics, like others, must, in the nature of things, be only relatively correct, because some libraries, like the Library of Congress and the John Crerar Library, are growing very rapidly, and because libraries differ more or less in their classification of books.
