The article presents the introductory matter for the journal "Towards the Semantic Web." The matter includes contents, foreword, biographies, and list of contributors. Some of the contributors are: Ian Horrocks, Dieter Fensel, Michael Erdmann, Victor losif, Robert Engels, Till Christopher Lech, Rikard Larsson, Jeen Broekstra, Arjohn Kampman, and Christiaan Fluit. This journal sets out new approaches to the development and deployment of knowledge on the Internet, and sets a precedent for high quality research in this exciting new area. This collection thus portrays state-of-the-art work demonstrating the power of new approaches to online knowledge management.

This paper explores major changes in entrepreneurship and continuing research needs in the field. The authors discuss significant changes in the political and public policy world as well as changing research thrusts. They also offer suggestions for future research needs and issues, including databases that can provide larger samples and longitudinal data within specific industries, and theory development and testing to provide direction and research concepts to the field. The authors discuss research needs and issues for financing growth, with special emphasis on financing outside of the United States.

Feminist theory includes a broad range of thinking about the roles and experiences of women; however, contemporary research in business ethics demonstrates little awareness of feminist theory. Two broad areas hold potential for the integration of business ethics and feminist theory: the articulation of ethical theory, and the research methodologies underlying ethical theory and practice. The use of feminist theory and research methods could significantly extend the scope of issues addressed and the depth of learning from research in the field of business ethics. In this paper, the following topics are discussed: feminist ethical theory, application of ethical theories, feminist research methods, and application of research methods. The author believes that feminist research methods hold the potential for greatly increased learning on the three levels of 'the person, the problem, and the method.' He concludes that if we are willing to explore beyond the positivist process, we may learn about ourselves and the research method as well as the problem under study. And, if we are willing to admit and discuss that learning in the context of our research presentations and publications, we will be doing the field a much greater service than if we merely write up the numerical or theoretical results of our research.

Developing ontologies is central to the vision of Semantic Web-based knowledge management. The methodology described guides the development of ontologies for different applications. However, because of the size of ontologies, their complexity, their formal underpinnings and the necessity to come towards a shared understanding within a group of people when defining an ontology, ontology construction is still far from being a well-understood process. In recent years, research has aimed at paving the way for the construction of ontologies by ontology development environments.

The article presents information about the wideband Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network sensitivity. The approach provides a relatively simple way to specify the required quality of MAI canceller (decorrelator) and RAKE receiver in a CDMA system, taking into account all their imperfections. A flexible, complex signal format is used that enables to model all currently interesting wideband CDMA standards. For such a signal we first derive a complex decorrelator structure. This is the first time that a complete decorrelator is described for the CDMA signal with two independent data and two independent code streams. This type of the signal is used in all CDMA standards. In the next step all imperfections in the operation of such a system are modeled and analyzed by using the concept of a network sensitivity function.

The article presents information about the packet transmission in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) radio network. The author starts with dual-class traffic and then extends the analysis to multimedia systems. These two classes are characterized by a set of parameters. The Class 2 mobiles must be capable of variable rate transmission, dependent on available residual capacity and the base station capable of the corresponding reception. The information transmission rate to be used by the Class 2 users will be decided by the base station, using information about the population distribution in the system, and in the constrained transmit power case, knowledge of the received power ratio parameter. In practice, the user-population distribution may be a slowly changing variable. This would imply that Class 2 information rate changes do not have to be effected too often.

The article presents information about the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network capacity. The CDMA network capacity depends significantly on the so-called near-far effect. From the very beginning, theory and practice of CDMA were aware of this fact. All practical systems use Power control (PC) to reduce this effect. PC is more efficient in the system optimized for speech, such as IS-95. In a multimedia network such as Universal Mobile Telecommunication System in which different signals levels are used for different data rates, additional solutions like multi-user detectors are used. In IS-95, every mobile station attempts to adjust its transmission power so that signals received at a base station are at the same, minimum level at which good quality communication can still be provided.

In this chapter we study multiconductor, multilayered transmission lines (MMTL) employing quasi-static, quasi-dynamic, and full-wave analyses. We begin with the quasi-static formulation (QSF), which provides the parasitic capacitance, inductance, resistance, and conductance. We introduce an intermediate formulation between that of the quasi-static and full-wave, referred to as the quasi-dynamic formulation (QDF). Next, we present the full-wave analysis, from which we extract the scattering parameters. The emphasis of this chapter is given to packaging and interconnects of high-speed digital circuits and systems and the implementation of numerical algorithms using wavelets. In this chapter we study the drift-diffusion (DD) model, which is the simplest version of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) coupled with Poisson's equation. The DD model has handled most engineering problems to date reasonably well. Having studied the DD model, we then use spherical expansion and Galerkin's method to solve the 1D BTE, obtaining more advanced information of hot carrier effects and ballistic transport for deep-submicron SMOS devices, or high-frequency compound semiconductor devices. In this chapter we examine scattering from 2D grooves using standard Coiflets, scattering from 2D and 3D objects, scattering and radiation of curved wire antennas, and scatterers employing Coifman intervallic wavelets. We provide the error estimate and convergence rate of the single-point quadrature formula based on Coifman scalets. In this chapter we present applications of wavelets in solving integral equations. Special treatments of edges are discussed, including periodic wavelets and intervallic wavelets.
