Chapter 1 discusses the handoff, which is the mechanism for transferring an ongoing call from one base station to another as a user moves through the coverage area of a cellular system. Admission control is a related problem, in which the radio resource management system has to decide if a new call arrival, or a request for service or handoff may be allowed into the system. The article presents information about the fourth-generation mobile systems, technology to be used in the field of wireless communication systems. Fourth-generation mobile systems require high data-rate transmission, high mobility, wide area coverage, higher capacity and wireless QoS (quality of service resource control). The requirement for broadband wireless channels and guaranteed quality of service (QoS) will become more stringent in mobile data communications. There is an idea to include new communication systems such as Intelligent Transport Systems and High Altitude Stratospheric Platform Station systems at a research level.

This article presents information on front matter and index to the book "GSM, cdmaOne and 3G Systems" related to the description and analysis of the global second generation (2G) mobile radio systems, the Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) and cdmaOne. The motivation for this book originated when we were asked to compare the capacities of GSM and, as cdmaOne was known then, IS-95. The multiple access method used by GSM is time division multiple access (TDMA), and this represented a significant change from the first generation (1G) analogue systems that operated with frequency division multiple access (FDMA). The article also includes the table of contents of the book published in the year 2001.

The article presents the list of contents, preface, index of terms related GSM published in the book "GSM Switching, Services and Protocols." GSM is much more than the acronym of "Global System for Mobile Communication," it stands for an extraordinarily successful stage of development in modem information technology. GSM means a new dimension for more than 50 million users. This book arose from an effort to explain and illustrate the essential technical principles of GSM in spite of this complexity, and to show the interrelations between the different subfunctions in a better way than is possible in the framework of standards.
