The article discusses Greek philosopher Theophrastus's veiws on the limits of teleology. One of the most distinctive features of Aristotle's philosophy of science is its attempt to defend the use of teleological explanations in accounting for a variety of natural phenomena without assuming some sort of consciousness involved in their causation. Such a position attempts to steer a middle course between the Scylla of the reductive materialism of certain pre-Socratic natural philosophers and the Charybdis of a Platonic demiurge. On the other hand Theophrastus is not concerned with finding criteria for testing claims about natural selection.
