The 2021 EUROCALL conference engaged just under 250 speakers from 40 different countries. Cnam Paris and Sorbonne Université joined forces to host and organise the event despite the challenging context due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally programmed to be held on site in the heart of Paris, France, the EUROCALL organising team and executive committee agreed to opt for a blended and then for a fully online conference. The theme of the 2021 EUROCALL conference was "CALL & Professionalisation". This volume, a selection of 54 short papers by some of the EUROCALL 2021 presenters, offers a combination of research studies as well as practical examples fairly representative of the theme of the conference. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the EUROCALL society succeeded in holding the 28th EUROCALL conference, EUROCALL2020, on 20-21 August as an online, two-day gathering. The transition process required to make this happen was demanding and insightful for everyone involved, and, in many ways, a logical consequence of the core content and purpose of EUROCALL. Who would be better suited to transform an onsite conference into an online event than EUROCALL? CALL for widening participation was this year's theme. We welcomed contributions from both theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to the many forms and contexts of CALL. We particularly welcomed longitudinal studies or studies that revisited earlier studies. The academic committee accepted 300 abstracts for paper presentations, symposia, workshops, and posters under this theme; 57 short papers are published in this volume. Six papers on Irish English are presented. "The Study of Hiberno-English" (Jeffrey L. Kallen) surveys some aspects of research on the language and offers a historical context for the subsequent papers. "A Tape-Recorded Survey of Hiberno-English in Its Context" (T. M. Tilling) reports on the early stages of an island-wide survey of the English speech of Ireland, combining traditional dialect geography and sociolinguistics. In "Linguistic Cross-Links in Phonology and Grammar" (G. B. Adams), the phonological and grammatical similarities between Irish and English resulting from extended language contact and bilingualism are examined. "The Hiberno-English 'I've It Eaten' Construction: What Is It and Where Does It Come From?" (John Harris) looks in greater detail at the Irish influence evident in one construction. Problems created by differences in structure in Irish and English are examined in "Observations on Thematic Interference Between Irish and English" (Markku Filppula), and "A Global View of the English Language in Ireland" (Kallen) urges a broader-based approach to the study of Hiberno-English than that commonly adopted, incorporating examination of all grammar and discourse phenomena, bilingualism, sociolinguistics, and reference to other English variations, not just standard English usage. This volume contains papers submitted to the 11th Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society (BCES), held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 14-17 May 2013, and papers submitted to the 1st International Distance Partner Conference, organized by the International Research Centre "Scientific Cooperation," Rostov-on-Don, Russia. This publication contains a sampling of conference papers delivered at the first European Economic Community (E.E.C.) Working Conference on Economics Education held at St. Ignatius University, Antwerp in September, 1976. Invited representative participants from the nine E.E.C. countries met to discuss common problems relating to economics in upper secondary education. The book is divided into five sections. Part I consists of a background paper on the evolution of economics education in E.E.C. countries. Part II deals with "Economics in the Curriculum." The papers explore the role of economics in Danish interdisciplinary social science courses, provide an Irish view of the relationship between economics and business studies, and discuss the Italian experience in grappling with the first stages of the introduction of economics into the upper secondary general education curriculum. "Inductive and Deductive Methods of Teaching Economics" is the topic of Part Three. Speakers from France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain explore the debate. The papers in Part IV discuss the preparation of economics teachers. Surveys of British and French practice and a detailed case study of Flemish Belgian practice in the teaching of economic teachers are provided. This collection of short papers is an outcome of the third conference on virtual exchange in higher education hosted by the Pedagogical University in Krakow in April 2018. The Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society is now running in its thirteenth year. From its modest beginnings thirteen years ago, to its impressive size today, a tradition has been the production of a conference book, consistently launched on the first day of the conference each year. This year, Volume 13 of BCES Conference Books is published in 2 parts. Number 1 of the volume contains papers submitted to the XIII Annual International Conference of the Bulgarian Comparative Education Society (BCES), held in Sofia, Bulgaria, 10-13 June 2015. Number 2 of the volume includes papers submitted to the III International Partner Conference of the International Research Centre (IRC) "Scientific cooperation," Rostov-on-Don, Russia. The aim of this book was to present innovative applications of technology in second language teaching and learning, as well as to explore the transformation of the different techniques to different theoretical frameworks. It has also been desired to have a representation of researchers from different parts of the world as contributors. Virtual exchange is gaining popularity in formal and non-formal education, partly as a means to internationalise the curriculum, and also to offer more sustainable and inclusive international and intercultural experiences to young people around the world. The countries that are members of the union include Denmark, Ireland and Great Britain. In addition, a background information on the structure of EU is discussed in this paper. The features of internal policy of EU on single market, economic status and key EU institutions are highlighted in this article.

This article focuses on evolving policies for lifelong learning in the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. In both Britain and Ireland, as elsewhere in Western Europe, lifelong learning has recently commanded considerable policy attention. Nevertheless, despite broad similarities of discourse and approach, the two contexts differ considerably. Of course, much is shared between Britain and Ireland, including a common language and the one land border in these islands. Historical ties and tensions have also played their part, not least in shaping the education and training systems. As in all members of the European Union, some public education and training programmes are partly financed and governed through the European Commission's Structural Funds. Yet the differences are important ones, and mean that the challenges faced by each society are rather different. In both countries, lifelong learning now occupies a leading place in policy discourse. In the Republic and Great Britain, a series of policy papers were produced around the turn of the century, leading subsequently to what appear to be a series of substantial new policy initiatives.

This article presents information on Irish housing during the two world wars. Nationalist government of Ireland had a strong anti-urban bias, with its historic support rooted among Irish peasants. The early spokesmen had a romantic vision of an independent Ireland that would build its wealth on successful farming, the fruits of which had previously largely gilded the homes of the occupying British aristocracy. Dublin, as the overdeveloped seat of an incompetent colonial administration, suffered particularly under this approach, inheriting a richly endowed but poorly maintained international capital. Not only were its housing problems seen as overwhelming, all attempts at remedies were expensive. Dreams of a well-planned and dignified national capital with spacious parks, roads, and solid, attractive housing developed in village style were to remain paper dreams, promoted by British experts. The rhetoric found favor, but did not become a reality because Nationalist priorities lay in the countryside where the mass of population still lived, mainly in very poor conditions.

This book examines the transition from higher education to the labor market in 10 countries. Although the individual papers do not follow a rigid standard format, they all consider the following issues: (1) how the labor market for graduates is organized; (2) how vocational orientation is achieved in degree courses in individual countries; and (3) how the transition from higher education to employment is organized. Of the 10 countries discussed, 7 are longtime members of the European Union. Poland is included as an example of a country of the former Eastern block that is currently undergoing significant transformation, and Japan and Sri Lanka are included to illustrate the completely different Asian cultures. Despite the far-reaching structural similarities that are evident in the Western European countries examined, it is particular national characteristics rather than common features that dominate the individual country reports. The Program on Institutional Management in Higher Education of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development studied information technology (IT) in higher education. Specifically, the study aimed to investigate the state of the art of IT in European higher education, examine the potential of IT and the impact of IT developments on higher education, and identify management issues of IT. "Education Policy and Equal Education Opportunities," published by the Open Society Education Support Program, examines the role of public education in addressing a wide variety of unequal educational opportunities found across the world. The publication brings together analyses from countries in Europe and Asia (Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Turkey, and United Kingdom) that examine the fundamental question of how public education policies are either mediating or reinforcing unequal education opportunities. "Education Policy and Equal Education Opportunities" focuses on key areas that are shaping the debates and issues of contemporary inclusive education policy: educational equity; education politics, policy, and governance; financing educational services; and creating educational opportunities for marginalized groups such as the Roma. In this report, the role of women's community education in combating poverty and disadvantage in Ireland over the past 10 years was examined, and future directions for policy and practice were suggested. The following data collection approaches were used: literature and policy document reviews; case studies involving regional workshops with participants and providers of women's community-based education in five areas across Ireland and a survey of the 91 workshop participants; structured interviews with key policymakers; and consultation with a research advisory group. The study confirmed that thousands of disadvantaged Irish women benefit from community-based educational opportunities each year. Underresourcing of appropriate support services and a lack of personal confidence and experience linked to women's traditional domestic roles/responsibilities and wider cultural attitudes were identified as the main barriers to women's participation in community education. The eight study recommendations included calls for providing the core funding required to give women's community-based education the continuity and security essential for service delivery and to develop comprehensive systems of supports for women learners and for women's community education groups and networks.
