The article provides an overview on the theatrical environment in Moscow, Russia since glasnost. According to Mikhail Ulianov, an actor and chair of the board of the Theatre Union of the Russian Federation, the theatrical environment in Moscow paved the way for the decisions taken by the congress of theatre people of the Russian Federation and, subsequently, the National Congress. A theatrical experiment, initiated by the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Culture on January 1, 1987, gave theatre companies a greater economic and creative independence than they ever had before. The undisputed leader of the season was Mikhail Shatrov's The Brest Peace Treaty, produced at the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow by the Georgian director Robert Sturua, distinguished for his interpretations of Shakespeare. No matter how significant a theme is, a confrontation of ideas and principles on the stage is bound to fail unless it touches people's hearts. Alexander Chervinsky's The Leningrader, produced at the Soviet Army Theatre in Moscow by director Yuri Yeryomin, is set in the early 1950s. Although we see no interrogations or prisoners on stage, the play stresses the ties between that period and the grim late 1930s.
