The aim of this paper is to examine current trends in the development of scholarly publishing in digital libraries (DL), with particular reference to Australian Universities. This paper is the result of preliminary study based on the visits made to university libraries in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. The objective of this paper is to analyze the various aspects of Institutional Repositories (IR) in Digital Libraries (DL) and its development in Australia. This article showcases the latest trends in DL which have adopted various technologies (i.e. open source or commercial or mixed) adopted in Australia. The government plays a prominent role in development of DL and supports scholarly publication through various digitisation projects. The paper concludes that there is a need for change in policy on mandatory submission of theses to reduce the cost, time and manpower efforts towards conversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Communication with customers (libraries) is vital to the overall success of academic publishers. Ongoing interaction and involvement with the library community through conference participation, institution of focus groups and other such means allow publishers to better serve the evolving needs of libraries. With foresight and direction, the acquisition of smaller publishing entities by larger organizations can result in a mutually beneficial situation for all parties. Through partnerships with online full-text database aggregators, academic publishers can increase their overall range of exposure and gain more name recognition in areas of the world where, previously, access to that publisher's content was not easily attainable. The use of online pre-publication services allows academic publishers to make the latest articles available to researchers even before the article is made available in print. By assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to every article made available through a pre-publication service, researchers are able to fully cite such articles and thus make full use of the information provided in their own studies. Comprehensive online support services provide libraries with a variety of essential subscription management services and help to increase the overall level of interaction between library and publisher. The Open Access (OA) issue is multi-dimensional in nature and has often been misconstrued by many in the publisher and library communities. As the Open Access concept is still being defined, academic publishers must pay close attention to its development and attempt to incorporate such access into their offerings so as to best serve the needs of their subscribers. This article presents information on several professional organizations that may be of interest to sociologists. A professional research life is an ongoing process of research investigation, reading research journals, preparing scientific papers, reading papers before professional audiences of various learned societies, and finally publishing articles and monographs. For them to command attention, it is necessary for researchers to make themselves and their work known to colleagues in local, state, regional, national and international circles. The North American sociologist who wishes to be known in national and international circles may join the American Sociological Association and may affiliate with one or both of the leading international sociological associations: the International Sociological Association and Institut International Sociologie. The American Sociological Association (ASA) is a voluntary association of individual members with many categories of membership. Full membership in the ASA requires the holding of a PhD degree in sociology or in some related field, or the completion of 3 years of graduate study in such field. Students are encouraged to join as associates at low fees. The scientific activities of the International Sociological Association are organized in research committees, where scholars who wish to pursue comparative research become part of a network of scientific research, intellectual debate and professional exchange.

The article presents information about the Matthew effect. In papers jointly published by scientists of markedly unequal rank and reputation, one who is best known gets more credit than the other who is less renounced. Such misallocation of credit can occur even when a published paper bears only the name of a hitherto unknown and uncredentialed scientist. Author described such patterns of the misallocation of recognition for scientific work as "the Matthew effect." These inequalities appear to result from self-augmenting processes.

This chapter presents an introduction to the book Food, Health and Identity. The anthropological work on food published during the 1960s and 1970s remains important and influential, it shows clearly that culture plays a significant role in determining what people classify as food. Changes in consumption and their effects, particularly on health, have been an important theme in much recent writing on food. One debate concerns the extent to which palatability coincides not only with edibility, but also with desirability from a nutritional viewpoint. In a 1993 study of the eating patterns of Canadian teenagers, for example, Chapman and Maclean found that they divide food into two categories: junk food and good food. In her article in this volume, Murcott addresses the frequent complaints about the demise of the meal in Britain, noting that there has long been a gap between rhetoric and reality: for example, upperclass children in the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth centuries ate quite separately from adults, first at home in the nursery, and then, if boys, at boarding school. Several other articles in this book also deal with issues of culinary change and continuity. Those by Martens and Warde, and by Williams, consider the great increase in eating outside of the home in recent years. Changes in the wider society--such as new ideas ranging from the relationship between humans and nature, to that between husbands and wives--may be powerfully symbolised by changes in food and eating.
