Smart antennas constitute a promising hut still emerging technology. Space-time processing algorithms provide powerful tools to enhance the overall performance of wireless cellular networks. Improvements, typically by a factor of two in cell coverage or capacity, are shown to be possible according to results from field deployments using simple beamforming. Greater improvements can be obtained from some of the more advanced space-time processing solutions described in this paper. The successful integration of space- time processing techniques will however also require a substantial evolution of the current air interfaces. The article focuses on third generation (3G) cellular systems. The goal of 3G wireless networks is to provide efficient support for both voice and high hit-rate data services. Third generation mobile and wireless networks aim to fulfill the demands of future services. 3G systems will offer global mobile multimedia communication capabilities in a seamless and efficient manner. Regardless of their location, users will be able to use a single device in order to enjoy a wide variety of applications. The term 3G is usually accompanied by some vagueness, as sometimes different people mean different things when they refer to it. 3G was originally defined to characterize any mobile standard that offered performance 3G systems will provide at least 144 kbps for full mobility applications in all cases, 384 kbps for limited mobility applications in macro and microcellular environments and 2 Mbps for low mobility applications particularly in the micro and picocellular environments.

The article presents information about the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network capacity. The CDMA network capacity depends significantly on the so-called near-far effect. From the very beginning, theory and practice of CDMA were aware of this fact. All practical systems use Power control (PC) to reduce this effect. PC is more efficient in the system optimized for speech, such as IS-95. In a multimedia network such as Universal Mobile Telecommunication System in which different signals levels are used for different data rates, additional solutions like multi-user detectors are used. In IS-95, every mobile station attempts to adjust its transmission power so that signals received at a base station are at the same, minimum level at which good quality communication can still be provided.

The article focuses on the issues associated with the design of radio frequency (RF) hardware for a wideband software defined radio (SDR) capable of accommodating European mobile standards over the 1-5 GHz range, as a tool to illustrate the key design issues. SDR RF hardware design has two significant differences compared to traditional, single mode, requirements: first, no predetermined operating frequency; secondly, its channel bandwidth is also not predetermined. These two factors give rise to major design challenges with transceiver filtering and linearity.

This article introduces the 3rd Generation (3G) networks. 3G systems might be defined by: the type of air interface, the spectrum used, the bandwidths that the user sees, or the services offered. 3G systems can be divided very crudely into three (network) parts: the air interface, the radio access network, and the core network. The air interface is the technology of the radio hop from the terminal to the base station. The core network links the switches/routers together and extends to a gateway linking to the wider Internet or public fixed telephone network. 3G systems differ from the second generation voice and text messaging services in terms of both the bandwidth and data capabilities that they will offer.

Co-channel interference is the most critical of all interference that occurs in cellular radio. The same channel cannot be assigned to two users that are connected to the same or to two "close" base stations. If this is the only type of interference considered, the channel assignment problem can be modeled as a graph multicoloring problem. Each base station is demanding a certain number of colors (frequencies). Two base stations are "neighbors" in graph terms if the distance between them is less than the reuse distance. The article presents information about the fourth-generation mobile systems, technology to be used in the field of wireless communication systems. Fourth-generation mobile systems require high data-rate transmission, high mobility, wide area coverage, higher capacity and wireless QoS (quality of service resource control). The requirement for broadband wireless channels and guaranteed quality of service (QoS) will become more stringent in mobile data communications. Chapter 4 is concerned with characterising the propagation channels over which a mobile satellite network operates. Both mobile and fixed transmission environments are considered. Narrow-band modelling of the mobile environment is presented in terms of empirical and statistical solutions. The review of empirical models includes the Empirical Roadside Shadowing Model. Statistical models include those developed by Loo and Lutz respectively. The current state of wide-band channel modelling is also reviewed, as is the use of geometric-analytical techniques. This Chapter describes the necessary network functions and procedures for the provision of satellite personal communication services for a stand-alone satellite system scenario. Initially, the GSM signalling protocol architecture is presented. This is followed by a description on the functional interfaces of a GEO-Mobile Radio (GMR) system, as specified by ETSI, which is designed for inter-working between geostationary satellite systems with GSM and for satellite network control functions. The mobility management functions, which comprise location management and handover management, are described. For location management, the definition of satellite cells and satellite location areas, different location update and terminal paging strategies and the design of database architecture are described. For handover management, the different phases and types of handover are described, followed by a discussion on different handover strategies and a comparison of their pros and cons is performed. Following the discussion of mobility management functions, the effects of satellite system characteristics and satellite mobility on resource management techniques are described. The relevance of different multiple access techniques in relation to satellite resource allocation are considered. Different approaches to assigning radio resources, including the fixed channel, dynamic channel and hybrid channel allocation schemes are discussed. This article presents information on front matter and index to the book "GSM, cdmaOne and 3G Systems" related to the description and analysis of the global second generation (2G) mobile radio systems, the Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) and cdmaOne. The motivation for this book originated when we were asked to compare the capacities of GSM and, as cdmaOne was known then, IS-95. The multiple access method used by GSM is time division multiple access (TDMA), and this represented a significant change from the first generation (1G) analogue systems that operated with frequency division multiple access (FDMA). The article also includes the table of contents of the book published in the year 2001.

The article presents the list of contents, preface, index of terms related GSM published in the book "GSM Switching, Services and Protocols." GSM is much more than the acronym of "Global System for Mobile Communication," it stands for an extraordinarily successful stage of development in modem information technology. GSM means a new dimension for more than 50 million users. This book arose from an effort to explain and illustrate the essential technical principles of GSM in spite of this complexity, and to show the interrelations between the different subfunctions in a better way than is possible in the framework of standards.

This chapter conveys a deeper understanding of the roots of the software radio.
