Objectives: This study aimed to translate and test the psychometric properties of the Chase Nurse Manager Competency Instrument (CNMCI) among Italian nurse managers and to provide further support for the scale’s validity testing. Methods: An instrument translation and cross-sectional validation study was conducted. The English version was translated into Italian using the translation method, which included pre-translation (establishing equivalence), initial translation, pretesting, review, and administration. From August 2022 to June 2023, 349 nurse managers were recruited through a web survey from 31 public and private healthcare organizations in North, Central, and Southern Italy. Validity assessments included content and structural validity. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s α coefficient and test-retest reliability. Results: The content validity confirmed all the items of the CNMCI in the Italian version, including the two measurement sections, “knowledge and understand” and “ability to implement and/or use.” The instrument’s item-content validity index (I-CVI) ranged from 0.83 to 1.00, while the scale-level content validity index (S-CVI) for both instrument sections was 0.97. The confirmatory factor analysis showed an acceptable fit. In the “knowledge and understand” section, Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.978, and in the “ability to implement and/or use” section, Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.976. The correlation coefficient between each dimension was 0.494–0.908. The test-retest reliability score was 0.82, suggesting good instrument consistency. Conclusions: Overall, the Italian CNMCI demonstrates good reliability and validity for measuring nurse managers’ core competencies and supports the construct’s multi-dimensionality. Also, our findings support the hierarchical nature of the factors, further supporting the validity of the instrument.

Nursing retention is a major challenge globally. Ongoing workforce instability across countries underscores the need to understand the factors influencing turnover and nursing retention. Trust is a crucial element in managing workplace relationships between nurse managers and nurses. Existing studies have shown the direct impact of trust on employees’ intention to leave their job but have not explored the effects of potential mediators such as organizational commitment. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of trust in the leader on nurses’ intention to leave their job through the mediation of organizational commitment. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Italy. A convenience sample of 1853 nurses completed a self-report survey. The study tested a hypothesis-based mediation model using structural equation modeling, which showed good fit indices. The results indicated that trust in the leader had a significant impact on nurses’ intention to leave, and this relationship was partially mediated by organizational commitment. Nurses who trust their leader are more likely to demonstrate higher levels of organizational commitment, resulting in a lower intention to leave their job. Furthermore, organizational commitment and trust emerge as critical factors in reducing nurses’ intention to leave their current positions. Therefore, managers can reduce nurses’ intention to leave by building trustful relationships that enhance organizational commitment.This study was not registered.

Fault slip is a complex natural phenomenon involving multiple spatiotemporal scales from seconds to days to weeks. To understand the physical and chemical processes responsible for the full fault slip spectrum, a multidisciplinary approach is highly recommended. The Near Fault Observatories (NFOs) aim at providing high-precision and spatiotemporally dense multidisciplinary near-fault data, enabling the generation of new original observations and innovative scientific products. The Alto Tiberina Near Fault Observatory is a permanent monitoring infrastructure established around the Alto Tiberina fault (ATF), a 60 km long low-angle normal fault (mean dip 20°), located along a sector of the Northern Apennines (central Italy) undergoing an extension at a rate of about 3 mm yr−1. The presence of repeating earthquakes on the ATF and a steep gradient in crustal velocities measured across the ATF by GNSS stations suggest large and deep (5–12 km) portions of the ATF undergoing aseismic creep. Both laboratory and theoretical studies indicate that any given patch of a fault can creep, nucleate slow earthquakes, and host large earthquakes, as also documented in nature for certain ruptures (e.g., Iquique in 2014, Tōhoku in 2011, and Parkfield in 2004). Nonetheless, how a fault patch switches from one mode of slip to another, as well as the interaction between creep, slow slip, and regular earthquakes, is still poorly documented by near-field observation. With the strainmeter array along the Alto Tiberina fault system (STAR) project, we build a series of six geophysical observatory sites consisting of 80–160 m deep vertical boreholes instrumented with strainmeters and seismometers as well as meteorological and GNSS antennas and additional seismometers at the surface. By covering the portions of the ATF that exhibits repeated earthquakes at shallow depth (above 4 km) with these new observatory sites, we aim to collect unique open-access data to answer fundamental questions about the relationship between creep, slow slip, dynamic earthquake rupture, and tectonic faulting.

BACKGROUND: L'esperienza del paziente (patient experience) nell'assistenza sanitaria e nell'erogazione delle cure sta emergendo come un'area importante di conoscenza e sviluppo dei servizi sanitari in un ottica paziente-centrica. Tuttavia, non è presente in letteratura nessun contributo che analizzi il punto di vista di adolescenti, genitori, infermieri e medici circa la loro percezione della definizione di patient experience. Obiettivo: Esplorare il punto di vista di adolescenti, genitori, infermieri e medici in merito alla definizione di patient experience nell’ospedalizzazione degli adolescenti per patologia acuta. METODI: Sono state realizzate delle interviste semistrutturate in un campione di convenienza di partecipanti composto da medici, infermieri, adolescenti e genitori. E’ stata effettuata una analisi qualitativa delle risposte secondo i tre livelli identificati da Ricoeur: lettura preliminare, analisi strutturale e analisi critica. RISULTATI: Sono state intervistate un totale di 16 persone: quattro medici, quattro infermieri, quattro genitori e quattro adolescenti. Dall’analisi delle risposte sono emersi 5 principali temi: ricordo dell’ospedalizzazione, competenze messe in campo, soddisfazione ed esperienza, relazione umana, ambiente ospedaliero e facility. CONCLUSIONI: Esplorare il concetto di patient experience in differenti popolazioni non solo in funzione delle diverse patologie, ma anche in funzione delle diverse categorie di età, permette una conoscenza più approfondita degli aspetti multidimensionali di questo concetto e dei fattori da considerare per orientare i servizi sanitari verso i reali bisogni dei pazienti. In particolare, quando il paziente è un adolescente, comprenderne il suo punto di vista e le interazioni che avvengono con il servizio, può essere la leva per migliorarne l’esperienza del percorso di cura, oltre che la sola soddisfazione.

Abstract We investigate similarities and differences between natural and simulated slow earthquakes using nonlinear dynamical system tools. We use spatio‐temporal slip potency rate data derived from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position time series in the Cascadia subduction zone and numerical simulations intended to reproduce their pulse‐like behavior and scaling laws. We provide metrics to evaluate the accuracy of simulations in mimicking slow earthquake dynamics. We investigate the influence of spatio‐temporal coarsening as well as observational noise. Despite the use of many degrees of freedom, numerical simulations display a surprisingly low average dimension, akin to natural slow earthquakes. Instantaneous dynamical indices can reach large values (>10) instead, and differences persist between numerical simulations and natural observations. We propose to use the suggested metrics as an additional tool to narrow the divergence between slow earthquake observations and dynamical simulations.

According to the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) of the FAO, Italy has one of the largest numbers of local small ruminant breeds among European countries. In Southern Italy, namely the Campania Region, Bagnolese and Laticauda sheep breeds and Cilentana goat breeds are considered endangered according to the DAD-IS. Conservation of endangered animal breeds is a goal of the European Union (EU). However, the role of infectious diseases as risk factors for endangered breeds has rarely been considered. Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) infect sheep and goats, causing slow-progressive, persistent, and debilitating diseases that can lead to animal death and productivity loss. In this study, we investigated the presence of SRLV in Bagnolese, Laticauda, and Cilentana breeds using a commercial ELISA in parallel with an in-house ELISA. The results of the two tests were in good agreement (Cohen Kappa 0.84, 95 % CI = 0.76–0.93). Discrepancies between the two tests were resolved using western blotting. In total, 430 samples were tested (248 Bagnolese, 125 Laticauda, and 57 Cilentana). The apparent prevalence rates were 12.5 %, 6.4 %, and 1.7 % in Bagnolese, Laticauda, and Cilentana, respectively. In the molecular analysis of 11 proviral partial sequences, subtypes B2 and A24 were identified in two Bagnolese herds. Owing to the beneficial role of sheep and goat breeding in marginal areas, it is important to screen the entire population and implement control/eradication of SRLV infections in conjunction with each conservation program.

Abstract An important epigenetic switch marks the onset and maintenance of senescence. This allows transcription of the genetic programs that arrest the cell cycle and alter the microenvironment. Transcription of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) is also a consequence of this epigenetic switch. In this manuscript, we have identified a group of ERVs that are epigenetically silenced in proliferating cells but are upregulated during replicative senescence or during various forms of oncogene-induced senescence, by RAS and Akt, or after HDAC4 depletion. In a HDAC4 model of senescence, removal of the repressive histone mark H3K27me3 is the plausible mechanism that allows the transcription of intergenic ERVs during senescence. We have shown that ERVs contribute to the accumulation of dsRNAs in senescence, which can initiate the antiviral response via the IFIH1-MAVS signaling pathway and thus contribute to the maintenance of senescence. This pathway, and MAVS in particular, plays an active role in shaping the microenvironment and maintaining growth arrest, two essential features of the senescence program.

Background Nursing workload is largely studied but poorly explored under physical, mental, and emotional dimensions. Currently, only a limited number of variables have been linked to nursing workload and work contexts. Purpose The study aimed to investigate whether it is feasible to identify variables that consistently correlate with nursing workload and others that are specific to the context. Methods We employed a descriptive correlational analysis and a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through a survey distributed to registered nurses working across Italy, at the conclusion of randomly assigned morning or afternoon shifts. Results We received 456 surveys from 195 shifts, collected from nurses in four public and two private hospitals. Commonly associated variables with nursing workload dimensions included patient complexity of care, admission/discharge or transfer, informing patients/relatives, contacting physicians, and unscheduled activities. Variables categorized as setting-specific were patient isolation and specialties, nurse-to-patient ratio, adequacy of staff in the shift, peer collaboration, healthcare documentation, educating others, and medical urgency. Conclusions In summary, certain variables consistently correlate with nursing workload across settings, while others are specific to the context of care. It is imperative for nurses and nurse managers to measure the nursing workload in various dimensions, enabling the prompt implementation of improvement actions.

Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is associated both solid (nasopharyngeal carcinoma, non-nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma- like carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, leiomyosarcoma) and hematolymphoid malignancies, some of the latter, however, spanning over a spectrum ranging from reactive and self-limiting to severe and life-threatening conditions. This review will focus on the disorder most commonly involving the skin, namely: EBVpositive mucocutaneous ulcer; lymphomatoid granulomatosis; EBV-positive diffuse large B cell lymphoma; plasmablastic lymphoma; post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder; extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type; angoimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma; severe mosquito bite allergy; hydroa vacciniformelike lymphoproliferative disorder. Given the uncommon occurrence of all these infiltrates in the skin, multidisciplinary approach, as well as referral to tertiary care centers are always advisable.

The need for high-energy and safe batteries is more and more urgent, and a possible approach is to use solid polymer electrolyte with high conductivity combined with lithium metal anode. Poly (1,3-dioxolane)-based electrolytes are promising, and the feasibility to polymerize 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) in situ makes this approach very attractive. In this paper, we present the in situ electro-initiated polymerization of DOL in polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous mats, without using initiator or crosslinking agents. The amount of monomer loaded in the porous scaffold, the electrochemical technique used to initiate the polymerization and the salt amount were investigated as important parameters that affect the ion conductivity and the performance of the obtained polymer electrolyte. Particular attention was directed towards minimizing the presence of residual monomer in the resulting polymer, with the aim of progressing towards the development of a real solid-state polymer electrolyte. The results of the thermal, morphological, and electrochemical characterization are reported and discussed.

Sensitivity to freezing remains a critical issue in stallion semen cryopreservation procedures. To explore this topic in-depth, semen was collected from ten stallions, diluted with three different extenders, transported to the laboratory, and then centrifuged and frozen with four different extenders. We conducted analyses of sperm kinetics, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and hydrogen peroxide content both before and after freezing. Additionally, we assessed antioxidant activity using the ABTS and FRAP methods and measured nitric oxide stable metabolites (NOx) in the blank extenders, seminal plasma, and extenders conditioned by spermatozoa before and after freezing. We found significant variability in the antioxidant activity and NOx content of the blank extenders and the seminal plasma. In the seminal plasma, ABTS-based antioxidant activity and NOx values were correlated with some sperm kinematic parameters and MMP in refrigerated semen, while no correlation was observed in frozen sperm parameters. Sperm function varied significantly between stallions but not between extenders, either before or after freezing. However, significant differences in antioxidant activities and NOx values were found among extenders conditioned following freezing. These results provide new insights into the factors contributing to the variability in individual stallions’ tolerance to sperm freezing.

Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) is the most prevalent subtype of IBS, characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in the absence of identifiable pathological findings. This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying IBS-D using transcriptomic data. By employing causal network inference methods, we identify key transcriptomic modules associated with IBS-D. Utilizing data from public databases and applying advanced computational techniques, we uncover potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Our analysis reveals significant molecular alterations that affect cellular functions, offering new insights into the complex pathophysiology of IBS-D. These findings enhance our understanding of the disease and may foster the development of more effective treatments.

HLA-B27 and HLA-B57 are associated with autoimmunity and long-term viral control and protection against HIV and HCV infection; however, their role in cancer immunity remains unknown. HLA class I molecules interact with innate checkpoint receptors of the LILRA, LILRB and KIR families present in diverse sets of immune cells. Here, we demonstrate that an open format (peptide free conformation) and expression- and stability-optimized HLA-B57-B2m-IgG4_Fc fusion protein (IOS-1002) binds to human leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B1 and B2 (LILRB1 and LILRB2) and to killer immunoglobulin-like receptor 3DL1 (KIR3DL1). In addition, we show that the IgG4 Fc backbone is required for engagement to Fcγ receptors and potent activation of macrophage phagocytosis. IOS-1002 blocks the immunosuppressive ITIM and SHP1/2 phosphatase signaling cascade, reduces the expression of immunosuppressive M2-like polarization markers of macrophages and differentiation of monocytes to myeloid-derived suppressor cells, enhances tumor cell phagocytosis in vitro and potentiates activation of T and NK cells. Lastly, IOS-1002 demonstrates efficacy in an ex vivo patient-derived tumor sample tumoroid model. IOS-1002 is a first-in-class multi-target and multi-functional human-derived HLA molecule that activates anti-tumor immunity and is currently under clinical evaluation.

This work describes a simple, inexpensive, and robust method to prepare a flexible “all in one” integrated hydrogel supercapacitors (HySCs). Preparing smart hydrogels with high electrical conductivity, ability to stretch significantly, and excellent mechanical properties is the last challenge for tailored wearable devices. In this paper, we employed a physical crosslinking process that involves consecutive freezing and thawing cycles to prepare a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel. Exploiting the self-healing properties of these materials, the assembly of the different layers of the HySCs has been performed. The ionic conductivity within the electrolyte layer arises from the inclusion of an H2SO4 solution in the hydrogel network. Instead, the electronic conductivity is facilitated by the addition of the conductive polymer PANI-PAMPSA into the hydrogel layers. Electrochemical measures have highlighted newsworthy properties related to our HySCs, opening their use in wearable electronic applications.
