This paper offers insights on the factors that determine household choices related to energy use, based on data from the third OECD Survey on Environmental Policies and Individual Behaviour Change (EPIC). The analysis profiles households according to patterns in reported energy use and investment in energyrelated technologies, assesses the factors driving such decisions and estimates households’ willingness to pay to reduce the emissions of the electricity they use. Results suggest that the feasibility of installing low-emissions energy technologies appears to remain a key obstacle to their uptake, and that households are willing to pay a small but positive premium for electricity produced with fewer emissions. The presence of cross-country differences in behaviours and preferences signals the importance of considering local factors in approaches to energy policies. Consumers purchase energy in many forms. Sometimes energy goods are consumed directly, for instance, in the form of gasoline used to operate a vehicle, electricity to light a home, or natural gas to heat a home. At other times, the cost of energy is embodied in the prices of goods and services that consumers buy, say when purchasing an airline ticket or when buying online garden furniture made from plastic to be delivered by mail. Previous research has focused on quantifying the pass-through of the price of crude oil or the price of motor gasoline to U.S. inflation. Neither approach accounts for the fact that percent changes in refined product prices need not be proportionate to the percent change in the price of oil, that not all energy is derived from oil, and that the correlation of price shocks across energy markets is far from one. This paper develops a vector autoregressive model that quantifies the joint impact of shocks to several energy prices on headline and core CPI inflation. Our analysis confirms that focusing on gasoline price shocks alone will underestimate the inflationary pressures emanating from the energy sector, but not enough to overturn the conclusion that much of the observed increase in headline inflation in 2021 and 2022 reflected non-energy price shocks. The newly published Mexico Power Report from BMI forecasts that the country will account for 22.38% of Latin America regional power generation by 2013, with a developing power surplus available for export to the US. BMI's Latin America power generation estimate for 2008 is 1,130 terawatt hours (TWh), representing an increase of 2.5% over the previous year. We are forecasting growth in regional generation to 1,320TWh by 2013, representing a rise of 16.9%. We estimate Latin American thermal power generation in 2008 at 453TWh, accounting for 40.0% of total electricity supplied in the region. Our 2013 forecast is 523TWh, implying 15.5% growth, trimming the thermal generation's market share to 39.6%, despite environmental concerns that should promote renewables, hydroelectricity and nuclear power. Mexico's 2008 thermal generation was around 209TWh, 46.04% of the regional total. By 2013 it is expected to account for 46.20% of thermal generation. For Mexico, oil is the dominant fuel, accounting for 52.8% of 2008 primary energy demand (PED), followed by gas at 35.5%, coal at 5.3%, hydro-electric energy at 5.1% and nuclear energy with a 1.4% share of PED. Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 726mn tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) by 2013, representing 14.5% growth. Mexico's market share in 2008 was 25.82%, easing to a forecast 24.73% by 2013.
