Vijay Mishra's meticulous analysis of the Rushdie Emory Archive - Salman Rushdie and the Genesis of Secrecy - is one of the most significant paperbacks to have been released in humanities publishing in 2021 (originally published in hardback in 2019). In one sense this book might be understood as a literary project, one that enriches understanding of the Rushdie's published works through the perspectives gained from close reading and detailed cross-referencing of Emory's extensive collection of the author's personal papers, unpublished manuscripts, digital materials and ephemera. However, to categorise The Genesis of Secrecy simply in terms of its literary credentials would be to overlook its conceptual and methodological value to wider areas of culture and media research. This article appraises the books "The Tanner Lectures on Human Values III," edited by S. McMurrin; and "Liberalism and the Limits of Justice," by M.J. Sandel. The first book will be of interest to political theorists mainly for the long paper by John Rawls on "The Basic Liberties and Their Priority" which opens the book. This belongs to an overlapping series of papers in which Rawls has been attempting to revise certain aspects of "A Theory of Justice" to meet critical objections. These revisions make it easier to justify the precedence Rawls gives to the familiar list of liberal freedoms in his theory of justice.

This article appraises the book "Studies on the Political Thought of Gaetano Mosca," edited by E.A. Albertoni. This book is composed of a collection of papers given at an international Mosca gathering held in Palermo some two years ago. Most of the contributors are in fact Italian, but there are one or two papers by Mosca scholars from elsewhere, and one contribution is specifically concerned with the influence of Mosca's ideas abroad. The most interesting essays are by Albertoni, and other authors.

This article presents information on the book "Violence and Crime in Cross-National Perspective," by Dane Archer and Rosemary Gartner. This book, reportedly, is concerned with the comparative perspective on the legitimation of Homicide. In this book, editors have tried to provide and utilize international data on crime and violence. The authors of this book, reportedly, have assembled data considering five offense categories; homicide, assault, robbery, theft, and rape; for 110 countries and 44 major international cities. The coverage spans the first three-quarters of the twentieth century. They have assembled the best cross-cultural database on criminal violence. The book includes a detailed discussion of the techniques the authors used to gather the data and the methodological problems they encountered. Research projects, comprised in this book, examine the relationship between city and national homicide rates, specially after two world wars. According to the author, this book is useful for graduate methods class as well as a wide assortment of seminars in criminology.
