Readers of the I PEQ i will be familiar with Warren's work in Jerusalem for the Palestine Exploration Fund but may be less familiar with the rest of his life and career. Shillington's treatment of Warren's work in Africa, where he spent most of his military career, is excellent, in that while he shows Warren as a man wholly committed to the imperial project, he also shows, in part through his conflict with Cecil Rhodes, that Warren appears to have recognised certain levels of sovereignty and self-rule as rightful claims of the colonised. Physics problems for aspiring physical scientists and engineers: by K. Riley, Cambridge, UK, Cambridge University Press, 2019, 335 pp., £24.99 (paperback), ISBN: 978-1-1087-0130-3. As a teacher always committed mainly in not losing good students genuinely interested in physics and its applications, I was immediately intrigued by this, and straightaway I began to browse through the problems presented in this book, the hints given and, finally, the solutions proposed by the author. I am personally convinced since some time that this is just the right way to train motivated students, the ability to decide with no or little external guidance what needs to be done being a major learning objective, and I also experimented with some problems of mine during the years with very good results (at least, with good students).
