"Desert Edens: Colonial Climate Engineering in the Age of Anxiety" by Philipp Lehmann explores the history of ambitious technological projects aimed at engineering more desirable climates in colonial lands between the 1870s and the 1940s. Lehmann focuses on three projects that aimed to tackle desertification in North Africa and Eastern Europe. These projects, proposed by individuals in France and Germany, were motivated by anxieties about climatic change and the decline of these regions. Although none of the projects were fully realized, Lehmann argues that they are significant for the history of climate engineering and continue to inspire debate. The book draws from a wealth of archival material and covers a range of disciplines, including environmental history, history of science and technology, colonial history, and the history of the Third Reich. It provides a diverse perspective on the history of climate change and its technological solutions, and offers inspiration for interdisciplinary discussions on climate engineering.
