A biography of Anna M. Engelgardt, writer, publicist, translator and activist in the Russian women's movement, is presented. She was born on June 2, 1838 in the village of Aleksandrovka in Kostroma, Russia and graduated from the Catherine Institute in Moscow with honors in 1853. She married Alexander Engelgardt, a scientist-artilleryman, in 1859 and had three children. She became the first upper-class woman in Russia to work publicly as a shop assistant in a bookstore in Saint Petersburg.
