- Abstract
This article profiles author Herbert Ernest Bates. Bates was born on May 16, 1905 in Rushden, Northamptonshire, England. In a career spanning more than fifty years, B. published at a rate of over a book a year, making him one of the most prolific British authors of the last century. One of his best-known novels is Fair Stood the Wind for France, the story of John Franklin, a British bomber pilot trapped in occupied France and his struggle to make it back to England. In a different vein are the later comedic novels centered around the character of Pop Larkin such as The Darling Buds of May and A Breath of French Air.
