- Abstract
Assembled from testimonials and interviews with current and former asylum seekers in France, as well as hearing records, administrative letters, and newspaper articles, Papers is a quietly monumental work of documentary art, a harrowing and enlightening portrayal of the modern refugee experience. Gathered here are the voices of men and women from around the world, united by the urgent need to leave their native country, risk their lives to make it to Europe, and begin the often bewildering process of securing the papers that will affirm their right to stay. Related without melodrama or self-pity, these are stories about the absurdity of bureaucracy, the agony of waiting, the pain of leaving everything behind and the courage to do so anyway. They are a testament to the brutal indignities of war and corruption and exile, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of it all. A fearless, candid, compassionate book for our troubled global times.

- Abstract
The compelling true story of a hard-fought environmental win, set in motion by a tenacious government scientist and an unrelenting journalist—resulting in the polluting companies paying for the $1 billion, 20-year cleanup. Booklist raves, Paper Valley'is a compelling human-interest tale on par with Erin Brockovich and Jonathan Harr'sA Civil Action.'A 2024 selection by the Sierra Club, Wisconsin Chapter Book ClubWinner, Midwest Book Award! When government scientist David Allen arrived at his new jobsite in the 1990s, the Fox River near Wisconsin's Green Bay was dominated by hulking paper mills, noxious industrial odors, and widespread ecological damage. Confronted by his lack of resources to force the politically powerful'Paper Valley'polluters to fix their mess, Allen proceeds against all bureaucratic odds in building a $1 billion case against the paper company bosses. Two small but vital players, Allen along with journalist Susan Campbell were relentless in bringing the case to the public at the time. They do so again in this book: an act of radical transparency to uncover the intrigue that nearly blocked the cleanup behind the scenes at US Fish and Wildlife, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. In a rare and major environmental win, the Fox River became the site of the largest polychlorinated biphenyls cleanup in history, paid for by the paper companies rather than taxpayers, to the tune of $1.3 billion, and completed in 2020.This true story of struggle, perseverance, and success inspires hope for environmentalists who strive to restore natural landscapes. The detailed account given in this book is meant to inspire and offer practical knowledge and solutions for those fighting similar opponents of environmental cleanup and restoration. Allen and Campbell eloquently outline the problematic bureaucracy involved in environmental cleanup efforts and reveal tactics to compel corporate entities who would dodge accountability for decades worth of contamination.

36. The Pfizer Papers : Pfizer's Crimes Against Humanity
- Author
-
The WarRoom/DailyClout Pfizer Documents Analysts, Naomi Wolf, Amy Kelly, The WarRoom/DailyClout Pfizer Documents Analysts, Naomi Wolf, and Amy Kelly
- Abstract
The Pfizer Papers features new reports written by WarRoom/DailyClout research volunteers, which are based on the primary source Pfizer clinical trial documents released under court order and on related medical literature. The book shows in high relief that Pfizer's mRNA COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial was deeply flawed and that the pharmaceutical company knew by November 2020 that its vaccine was neither safe nor effective. The reports detail vaccine-induced harms throughout the human body, including to the reproductive system; show that women suffer vaccine-related adverse events at a 3:1 ratio; expose that vaccine-induced myocarditis is not rare, mild, or transient; and, shockingly, demonstrate that the mRNA vaccines have created a new category of multi-system, multi-organ disease, which is being called “CoVax Disease.” Despite the fact that Pfizer committed in its own clinical trial protocol to follow the placebo arm of its trial for twenty-four months, Pfizer vaccinated approximately 95 percent of placebo recipients by March 2021, thus eliminating the trial's control group and making it impossible for comparative safety determinations to be made. Just as importantly, The Pfizer Papers makes it clear that the US Food and Drug Administration knew about the shortfalls of Pfizer's clinical trial as well as the harms caused by the company's mRNA COVID vaccine product, thus highlighting the FDA's abject failure to fulfill its mission to “[protect] the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices.” The Pfizer Papers offers an in-depth look at how Big Pharma, the US government, and healthcare entities stand protected behind the broad legal immunity provided by the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act) when creating, prescribing, and administering vaccines; and, under that shield of protection, do what is best for their bottom lines rather than for the health and well-being of Americans.

37. Paper Soldiers : How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order

- Abstract
'Incisive debut treatise... Mohsin brings to the proceedings a reporter's eye for story'— Publisher's WeeklyFrom Bloomberg News reporter Saleha Mohsin, the untold story of how one of America's most invincible institutions—the Treasury—has used the U.S. dollar to define America's role in the world, and our economic future. In 1995, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin re-defined the next thirty years of currency policy with the mantra, “A strong dollar is in America's interest.” That mantra held, ushering in exceptional prosperity and cheap foreign goods, but the strong dollar policy also played a role in the devastating hollowing out of America's manufacturing sector. Meanwhile, abroad, the United States increasingly turned to the dollar as a weapon of war. In Paper Soldiers, Saleha Mohsin reveals how the Treasury Department has shaped U.S. policy at home and overseas by wielding the American dollar as a weapon—and what that means in a new age of crisis. For decades, America has preferred its currency superpower-strong, the basis of a'strong dollar'policy that attracted foreign investors and pleased consumers. Drawing on Mohsin's unparalleled access to current and former Treasury officials like Robert Rubin, Steven Mnuchin, and Janet Yellen, Paper Soldiers traces that policy's intended and unintended consequences, including the rise of populist sentiment and trade war with China—culminating in an unprecedented attack on the dollar's pristine status during the Trump presidency—and connects the dollar's weaponization from 9/11 to the deployment of crippling financial sanctions against Russia. Ultimately, Mohsin argues that, untethered from many of the economic assumptions of the last generation, the power and influence of the American dollar is now at stake. With first-hand reporting and fresh analysis that illustrates the vast, often unappreciated power that the Treasury Department wields at home and abroad, Paper Soldiers tells the inside story of how we really got here—and the future not only of the almighty dollar, but the nation's teetering role as a democratic superpower.

38. Papers From Lilliput
- Author
-
J. B. Priestly and J. B. Priestly
- Abstract
Papers from Lilliput, by J. B. Priestly, is a collection of essays that effortlessly blends wit, satire, and poignant social commentary, making it strikingly relevant to modern readers. The book's central theme revolves around the author's observations of the world, delivered through a lens that is both humorous and critical. Priestly's incisive critique of societal norms, politics, and human behavior transcends time, resonating deeply with contemporary issues. One of the main themes in Papers from Lilliput is the absurdity of societal conventions and the often ludicrous nature of human behavior. Priestly's essays dissect various aspects of society, from the mundane to the significant, exposing the inherent contradictions and follies within. This theme is especially pertinent today, as modern society grapples with political polarization, social media echo chambers, and the spread of misinformation. Priestly's humorous yet insightful approach encourages readers to question the status quo and reflect on their own beliefs and behaviors. Another significant theme is the critique of political systems and leadership. Priestly's essays often highlight the incompetence, hypocrisy, and self-serving nature of those in power. In an era where political scandals, corruption, and debates over governance are prevalent, Priestly's observations offer a timeless perspective on the flaws of political structures. His work serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership, urging modern readers to advocate for positive change. The book also delves into the theme of human connection and the shared experiences that bind individuals together. Priestly's reflections on community, empathy, and the human condition are particularly relevant in today's world, where issues like mental health, loneliness, and the search for meaningful connections are at the forefront of societal concerns. His essays inspire readers to foster genuine relationships, practice empathy, and build supportive communities. In addition, Papers from Lilliput addresses the theme of cultural and intellectual critique. Priestly's essays often challenge prevailing cultural norms and intellectual trends, encouraging readers to think critically and independently. This theme resonates strongly in the age of information overload, where discerning truth from falsehood and developing a nuanced understanding of complex issues are crucial skills. Priestly's work empowers readers to embrace intellectual curiosity and cultivate critical thinking. Overall, Papers from Lilliput by J. B. Priestly offers a rich tapestry of themes that are remarkably pertinent to contemporary society. Through his masterful storytelling and keen observations, Priestly provides a thought-provoking commentary on the human experience, urging readers to reflect on their own lives and the world around them. The book's blend of humor, satire, and social critique makes it an engaging and accessible read for modern audiences, while its timeless themes ensure its continued relevance and impact. Whether examining the absurdity of societal norms, critiquing political systems, exploring human connections, or challenging cultural and intellectual assumptions, Papers from Lilliput invites readers to engage with enduring questions and seek meaningful change. Priestly's essays encourage a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human condition and inspire readers to navigate the contemporary world with awareness, empathy, and a critical mind.

39. Paper of Wreckage : The Rogues, Renegades, Wiseguys, Wankers, and Relentless Reporters Who Redefined American Media
- Author
-
Susan Mulcahy, Frank DiGiacomo, Susan Mulcahy, and Frank DiGiacomo
- Abstract
A jaw-dropping and unputdownable oral history of the New York Post and the legendary tabloid's cultural impact from the 1970s to today as recounted by the men and women who witnessed it firsthand. By the 1970s, the country's oldest continuously published newspaper had fallen on hard times, just like its nearly bankrupt hometown. When the New York Post was sold to a largely unknown Australian named Rupert Murdoch in 1976, staffers hoped it would be the start of a new golden age for the paper. Now, after the nearly fifty years Murdoch has owned the tabloid, American culture reflects what Murdoch first started in the 1970s: a celebrity-focused, noisy, one-sided media empire that reached its zenith with Fox News. Drawing on extensive interviews with key players and in-depth research, this eye-opening, wildly entertaining oral history shows us how we got to this point. It's a rollicking tale full of bad behavior, inflated egos, and a corporate culture that rewarded skirting the rules and breaking norms. But working there was never boring and now, you can discover the entire remarkable true story of America's favorite tabloid newspaper.

John Kessel and John Kessel
- Abstract
Mixing satire, farce, and dystopia, the stories in John Kessel's The Presidential Papers deconstruct the character and politics of five imagined presidents, some of whom bear striking resemblance to individuals who have occupied the Oval Office over the last thirty years. Who are these men and what makes them so funny, when they are not terrifying? How damaged does a person need to be to seek such power, why do we vote for them, and what do they think about the 1959 Washington Senators? In'The Franchise,'aging career minor leaguer George H.W. Bush faces ace New York Giants pitcher Fidel Castro in the 1959 World Series.'The Last American'outlines the career of the final president of the United States and his thirty-three years in office. Can the megalomaniac President of the Solar System evade the consequences of his moronic rule in the original play'A Brief History of the War with Venus'? In our Outspoken Interview we learn about crossing Mary Shelley with Jane Austen, about having classic SF writer James Gunn as a mentor, about being a spy in the English department, and about industrial capitalism, immigrants, and Buffalo, New York.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Harry E. Rieseberg's autobiographical writings include stories like being attacked by a giant octopus while recovering sunken treasure, defending himself from an attack by a 15-foot shark with only a diving knife, and surviving a hurricane and a severely broken leg while at sea--all captivating tales for audiences in the 1940s and 1950s, and all invented by a very successful charlatan. This is a biography of Harry E. Rieseberg, a shameless self-promoter who passed himself off as the world's greatest treasure salvor but who never got wet. His entire public persona was based on stories he retold in dozens of books and thousands of articles in which he made claims of feats that were fantasy but sold as fact. Despite the often-obvious facts of his fabrication, his books influenced a generation of legitimate divers and underwater archaeologists like Sir Robert Marx and Robert Stenuit. Thoroughly researched, this book uses sources including his personal records and letters to his agents to provide deep insight into the nature of his life and the way he created a false persona for popular consumption.

Summary: During the COVID-19 crisis, the European corporate ecosystem avoided major disruptions, and corporate bankruptcy rates even declined. This outcome mostly resulted from the strength of support from monetary, financial supervisory and fiscal policies. Using the 2021 vintage of the EIB Investment Survey (EIBIS) matched with balance sheet data on firms' profits and losses, this paper investigates what has driven the allocation of fiscal policy support and the impact of this support during the investment recovery. It finds that support was largely directed towards firms that were most affected by the crisis in terms of lost sales, and was not tilted firms already weak before the crisis. It also shows that the firms that benefitted from this support tend to be more optimistic in their investment plans, especially with regard to digital technologies.

- Abstract
A herald of desire, mortality, and the mission of poetry itself, Jane Miller's Paper Banners catalogs the intimate experiences that create a life, hoping that “what will survive of us is love.”A herald of desire, suffering, mortality, and the mission of poetry itself, Jane Miller's Paper Banners “say the cosmos/ isn't hostile/ yet strangles a dove /with one hand.” Against this angst, Miller steps outside of history to contemplate voices of love, aging, and artmaking. Many poems are addressed to family members, friends, and young poets, or pay homage to familiar figures taken by time or tragedy, including Virginia Woolf, Osip Mandelstam, and the Song Dynasty poet Li Qingzhao. In clear, short lines, these poems harken to ancient banderoles, or pennants, which announced rallying cries on the lances of knights and mottoes on the flags of ships. Here, Miller's Paper Banners are made of images of the American Southwest and scrutinize its political and physical landscape. Like skywriting streamed in white smoke, this collection bears its message on the wind, its words addressed to anyone. As Miller catalogs the intimate experiences that make up a life—friendships, loves, dreams, our human connection to the environment—Paper Banners becomes a hope that “what will survive of us is love.”
