In this study, the localized corrosion susceptibility of AA2050‐T84, AA2198‐T851, and AA2024‐T3 alloys was compared by immersion in three test solutions, specifically sodium chloride solution (3.5% NaCl), EXCO solution, according to ASTM G34‐18, and a solution for intergranular corrosion (IGC) test recommended by ASTM G110‐15 and via scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). The results showed higher susceptibility of AA2050‐T84 alloy to all types of corrosion tested compared to the other studied 2XXX series alloys. Corrosion penetration was deeper in the AA2050‐T84 due to its microstructural characteristics as a difference in the micrometric Cu‐Rich intermetallic particle distribution on the surface and related to the distribution of the T1 (Al2CuLi) phase. Amorphous carbon coatings by various physical vapor deposition (PVD) have been widely attempted for enhancing both anti-wear and corrosion resistance of bulk materials used in harsh marine environments. However, PVD coatings are apt to be worn due to the existence of growth defects mostly like macro-size nodular particles. In this work, we deliberately fabricated the SiO2 nanoparticles with a size of 200 nm as nodular defects in Cr and graphite-like carbon (Cr/GLC) multilayer coatings, and the dependence of tribocorrosion behavior of coating on the nodular defects was focused by the comprehensively tribological and electrochemical tests. The results showed that introducing SiO2 nodular particles could not degrade the mechanical properties of Cr/GLC coating, but significantly accelerated both the abrasive wear in early sliding-stage under dry friction and the corrosive failure in chloride solution. Particularly, once the tribocorrosion tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were conducted for the Cr/GLC coating with nodular defects, the distinct ploughing damage originated from abrasive wear promoted the localized spallation of coatings, which thereafter enabled the easy water wedging along spallation for the substantial catastrophe of coatings. The present observations could evident the importance to fabricate the defect-free protective coatings required for harsh tribocorrosion applications.

This study delved into the potential application of Platanus acerifolia leaf extract (PALE) as an environmentally benign corrosion inhibitor. Evaluation of corrosion inhibition was conducted using electrochemical methods, field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. The results reveal that PALE offers efficient protection for Q235 steel across the temperature range of 298 K–318 K, achieving a maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of approximately 93%. Furthermore, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to elucidate the spontaneous and stable adsorption of PALE molecules onto the surface of Q235 steel. This adsorption impedes the diffusion of corrosive substances towards the steel surface, thereby endowing Q235 steel with robust corrosion resistance.

TC4/DP780 dissimilar metals were laser welded with different thicknesses of the H62 interlayer. Joints with good forming and mechanical properties were obtained. The corrosive behaviors of TC4/DP780 joints in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated by micro-area scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Results showed that TC4/DP780 joints effectively hindered the brittle intermetallic compounds of Ti–Fe through mutual diffusion and the solid solution between the H62 layer metal and TC4 alloy. Cu–Ti intermetallic compounds and H62 Cu-based solid solution formed at the H62/TC4 interface. The intermetallic compounds layer grew dendritically from the dependent TC4 alloy toward the weld. With increased Ti element content and interlayer temperature, the microstructure morphology changed from fine dendrites to coarse dendrites. Corrosion experiments further revealed that with increased thickness of the H62 interlayer, the corrosion resistance of joints initially increased and then decreased. The joints added with a 0.4 mm H62 interlayer had the highest self-corrosion potential and the lowest self-corrosion current density. The corrosion rate of joints was the slowest. DP780 steel formed loose porous Fe2O3, accelerating the metal-corrosion dissolution. The H62 primarily formed due to the corrosion susceptibility of ZnO, leaving the porous structure of the Cu layer and the enabling the formation of CuO. TC4 had the highest corrosion potential and was protected as the cathode. TC4 underwent galvanic coupling corrosion with the DP780 steel and the H62 interlayer metal. Meanwhile, TC4 was oxidized in air to form a dense TiO2 and Al2O3 protective film, which had good restoration and passivation effects.

Corrosion processes at cut edges of galvanized steels proceed as highly localized electrochemical reactions between the exposed bulk steel matrix and the protective thin metallic coating of a more electrochemically active material. Scanning microelectrochemical techniques can thus provide the spatially resolved information needed to assess the corrosion initiation and propagation phenomena, yet most methods scan cut edge sections as embedded in insulating resin to achieve a flat surface for scanning purposes. In this work, the galvanized coatings on both sides of the material were concomitantly exposed to simulated acid rain while characterizing the cut edge response using SECM and SVET techniques, thereby maintaining the coupled effects through the exposure of the whole system as rather realistic operation conditions. The cut edges were shown to strongly promote oxygen consumption and subsequent alkalization to pH 10–11 over the iron, while diffusion phenomena eventually yielded the complete depletion of oxygen and pH neutralization of the nearby electrolyte. In addition, the cathodic activation of the exposed iron was intensified with a thinner coating despite the lower presence of sacrificial anode, and preferential sites of the attack in the corners revealed highly localized acidification below pH 4, which sustained hydrogen evolution at spots of the steel-coating interface. In this work, a novel zinc–aluminum–magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg, ZM) coated steel was prepared using the hot-dip method. The microstructure and corrosion resistance of the ZM-coated steel were investigated. Compared to the conventional galvanized steel (GI), the ZM coating demonstrated a distinctive phase structure, consisting of Zn phase, binary eutectic (Zn/MgZn2), and ternary eutectic (Zn/Al/MgZn2). The corrosion resistance of the ZM-coated and GI-coated steels was evaluated by neutral salt spray test (NSST), polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicated that ZM-coated steel provided superior long-term corrosion protection in a NaCl environment compared to GI-coated steel. The scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) proved to be an effective method for investigating the evolution of the anodic and cathodic on the local coating surface. GI-coated steel exhibited a potential and current density distribution between the cathodic and anodic sites nearly three orders of magnitude higher than that of ZM-coated steel, suggesting a higher corrosion rate for GI-coated steel. The effect of varying Al concentrations on the electrochemical corrosion resistance of binary Mg-Al solid solutions thin films under alkaline immersion conditions was investigated via a combination of in-situ flow-cell, scanning vibrating electrode technique and microscopy analysis. These spatially resolving characterization techniques are employed along the Al concentration gradient of the combinatorically grown thin films enabling efficient screening of the Al concentration dependent electrochemical corrosion behaviour. The analysis revealed an increasing corrosion resistance with increasing Al concentration, as a consequence of Al induced hydroxide reinforcement. Specifically, the addition of >4 wt.% Al decreases the corrosion current density in the range of 70–90 % compared to pure Mg.

Three different laser welding methods were used to welding 2 mm DP980 steel butt joint, which were laser welding, laser-TIG hybrid welding and laser powder feeding (CoCrNi) welding respectively. An observational analysis was carried out in terms of microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. It was discovered that a central microstructure of laser welding and laser-TIG hybrid welding the weld was dominated by slatted martensite. The laser powder feeding welding has resulted in a remarkable reduction of cylindrical crystals and an increased number of isometric crystals in weld center due to the addition of CoCrNi powder. Microstructure was further refined in incomplete phase transition zone by three different laser welding methods. The tempered martensite was also formed in the tempering zone, which softened the joint. The hardness values decreased considerably and tensile samples were also fractured at this location. Comparison with corrosion resistance of their joints through polarization curves and impedance spectra shows that laser powder feeding joint > laser joint > laser-TIG hybrid joint. The corrosion resistance of laser and laser-TIG hybrid joints in the base metal (BM) > heat affected zone (HAZ) > weld zone (WZ) is shown based on scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) localized area testing data at different time intervals. The laser powder feeding welding enhances the density of passivation film by reacting Cr to form Cr2O3, thereby improving corrosion resistance of entire joint.

Novel Fe–Cr SS alloys were fabricated by alloying with 0, 0.10 and 0.20 wt-% Sn respectively to investigate the effect of the Sn addition on the microstructure, passive characteristics and localized corrosion behavior in chloride medium at room temperature. The advanced scanning micro-electrochemical techniques along with the traditional electrochemical methods were used for in-depth investigations. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic test results exhibited that the addition of Sn in SS alloys increased the resistance against pitting corrosion in NaCl medium. The acquired dynamic impedance data confirmed the effective electrochemical stability of the alloy SS3 (SS with 0.20 wt-% Sn) at applied anodic potential, suggesting the presence of a compact and stable passive film in Sn containing alloys, which contributed to their improved localized corrosion resistance in chloride solution. The scanning electrochemical microscopic results corroborated that the alloy SS3 remained stable even after 24 h of exposure and displayed no noticeable surface heterogeneity. A reduced anodic current density in scanning vibrative electrode technique mapping images was observed even after 24-h of exposure in alloy SS3 compared to other samples, indicating that the anodic metal dissolution was successfully obstructed by forming a compact and dense passive film on this alloy.

The electrochemical corrosion of ductile pipes (DPs) in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) has a crucial impact on cement-mortar lining (CML) failure and metal release, potentially leading to drinking water quality deterioration and posing a risk to public health. An in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) with micron-scale resolution, microscopic scale detection and water quality analysis were used to investigate the corrosion behavior and metal release from DPs throughout the whole CML failure process. Metal pollutants release occurred at three different stages of CML failure process, and there are potential risks of water quality deterioration exceeding the maximum allowable levels set by national standards in the partial failure stage and lining peeling stage. Furthermore, the effects of water chemistry (Cl−, SO 4 2−, NO 3 −, and Ca2+) on corrosion scale growth and iron release activity, were investigated during the CML partial failure stage. Results showed that the CML failure process in DPs was accelerated by the autocatalysis of localized corrosion. Cl− was found to damage the uncorroded metal surface, while SO 4 2− mainly dissolved the corrosion scale surface, increasing iron release. Both the oxidation of NO 3 − and selective sedimentation of Ca2+ were found to enhance the stability of corrosion scales and inhibit iron release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) alloys are reported to suffer accelerated local corrosion in sulfide-polluted seawater. In this work, the real-time in situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) was employed to monitor the evolution of the corrosion product film of a typical NAB alloy immersed in the clean and sulfide-polluted 3.5% NaCl solutions. In the sulfide-free condition, the corrosion current peak surged at the individual point of the NAB surface and receded to calm in 2 h. In the presence of the sulfide, however, multiple active points on the measured metal surface released high corrosion current for a long time, indicating that intense corrosion had occurred. The corrosion mass loss was more than four times the former. Global electrochemical techniques, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were adopted to perform a comprehensive analysis of the composition of the corrosion product films. The results show that a dense layer of aluminum and cuprous oxide forms on the NAB surface in the sulfide-free solution, while a loose mixture of cuprous sulfide and cuprous oxide is detected in the sulfide-contaminated solution. Microgalvanic activity of carbon steel API 5L X52 was investigated by scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Two types of corrosion inhibitors were used for the protection of carbon steel. The first one is based on primary amine function with linear carbon chain (inhibitor A). The second one contains primary amine with Ethylene oxide branched chain (inhibitor B). The evolution of microgalvanic activity was studied at different imposed currents ranging up to 200 mA without and in the presence of 20 ppm and 50 ppm of each corrosion inhibitor. In absence of inhibitors, the maps given by SVET analysis showed a uniform microgalvanic activity with imposed currents ranging from 0 to 1 mA and tend towards less cathodic area. For high imposed currents (10mA, 25mA, 50mA, 100mA and 200mA); a clear evolution in the microgalvanic activity is noticed considering the presence of several anodic area. The dissolution of the carbon steel was accelerated and the microgalvanic potential tends to electronegative values. With the corrosion inhibitors, no anodic area was observed for weak currents ranging from 0 to 10mA. The best protection is assured by the inhibitor B due to the improvement of its solubility. Beyond 25 mA, the protection from corrosion decreases but inhibitor B still demonstrates a better efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of corrosion of magnesium and its alloys has emerged a hot topic in the applications of lightweight structural materials. The inherently high electrochemical activity of bare magnesium surfaces still lacks a convincing mechanism to describe the observed experimental characteristics, and it has prompted the development of various types of protective coatings with the aim of slowing metal dissolution. In recent years, new instruments and techniques have been developed to study with spatial resolution the local corrosion processes that occur in metallic materials in general, and for magnesium and its alloys in particular, both for bare surfaces and coated. Scanning microelectrochemical techniques, such as local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS), scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET), scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET) and scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) can provide information about the local electrochemical activity of metallic surfaces. In the present work, the applications of these techniques in corrosion studies of magnesium and its alloys are reviewed. Assessment of corrosion mechanisms, barrier properties of conventional coatings and active corrosion behavior of self-healing coatings are examined. A combination of scanning microelectrochemical techniques along with the conventional electrochemical approaches is explored to attain insight information on the localized corrosion on the newly developed lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS) alloys. The obtained results from dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (DEIS) tests explained the beneficial role of different alloying elements on the passive and transpassive regions of the investigated LDSS alloys in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) was effective in examining the anodic and cathodic regions on the corroding LDSS, whereas the scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) technique was employed to explore the localized corrosion sites on LDSS in NaCl solution. The acquired SVET results revealed a reduction in the susceptibility of the newly developed alloys to localized corrosion concerning their composition, accounting for the enhanced corrosion resistance. The obtained result from conventional and scanning microelectrochemical techniques obviously revealed the LDSS alloy with the composition of Fe–16Cr–2Ni–2Mn–1Mo exhibited higher localized corrosion resistance in NaCl solution. In this work, the corrosion behavior of copper in a simulated organic acid environment containing formic acid and acetic acid was investigated by electrochemical testing and surface characterization. In addition to deducing the corrosion mechanism of copper in the organic acid corrosion environment, the corrosion inhibitor BTA was also used to slow down the corrosion of copper by organic acid. The results show that the corrosion rate of copper in the two groups of organic acids first decreases and then increases with the immersion time. Microelectrochemical (Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique) results shows that the anodic peak of the sample is higher in formic acid. Formic acid is more corrosive. The corrosion products of red copper gradually increased in the two groups of organic acid atmospheres, and the final corrosion products were cuprous oxide, copper formate particles and copper acetate hydrate, respectively. When the concentration of BTA is 0.5 g/L, the electrochemical activity of TP2 copper is weakened, the surface of the sample is relatively smooth, there are no large corrosion pits, and the corrosion rate is reduced. The process of immersion corrosion on pure magnesium in 0.1 M NaCl solution was investigated by the phase angle. Results show that the peak value of phase angle and responding frequency of peak can be used to characterize the evolution process of corrosion products. It is before 80 min that corrosion products increase on the surface until film layers formed. The theoretical relation between the phase angle and corrosion products was established and the simulated results had a good agreement with the validation experiment data. The article deals with the history of the state administrative bodies in the field of culture from 1945 to the present. Until the mid-1970s, culture had no independent department (predominantly, it was associated with the field of education). Except for a few short intervals, it had its department from that time. Archive materials of all legal predecessors of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, operating from 1945 to 1991, have already been acquired by the competent archive. In this paper, the finite element method was used to simulate the response of the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) across an iron–zinc cut-edge sample in order to provide a deeper understanding of the localized corrosion rates measured using SVET. It was found that, if the diffusion layer was neglected, the simulated current density using the Laplace equation fitted the experimental SVET current density perfectly. However, the electrolyte was not perturbed by a vibrating SVET probe in the field, so a diffusion layer existed. Therefore, the SVET current densities obtained from the local conductivity of the electrolyte would likely be more representative of the true corrosion rates than the SVET current densities obtained from the bulk conductivity. To help overcome this difference between natural conditions and those imposed by the SVET experiment, a local electrolyte corrected conductivity SVET (LECC-SVET) current density was introduced, which was obtained by replacing the bulk electrolyte conductivity measured experimentally by the local electrolyte conductivity simulated using the Nernst−Einstein equation. Although the LECC-SVET current density did not fit the experimental SVET current density as perfectly as that obtained from the Laplace equation, it likely represents current densities closer to the true, unperturbed corrosion conditions than the SVET data from the bulk conductivity. The co-polymerization of aniline with p-nitroaniline has been synthesized in oxalic acid medium, here ammonium persulfate (APS) acts as an oxidant. TGA analysis was used to study the thermal stability of the copolymer, as well as FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and XRD. The synthetic poly (aniline-co-p-nitroaniline) (PANA) is used as a barrier/redox pigment for PANA coatings. The anti-corrosion study on PANA coatings was performed with a 3% NaCl solution for up to 35 days. The coating resistance of PANA coatings is three orders of magnitude more than that of pure epoxy coatings, according to the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The scanning vibrating electrode method (SVET) was used to investigate the self-healing characteristics of this PANA coating.

The present research examined the effects of inclusions and microstructure on the initial marine corrosion and evolution of corrosion products in weathering steels by using first-principle modeling and various highly-sensitive analytical techniques including in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET), scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical workstation. The results demonstrated that CaS in the (Al, Mg)Ox-CaS inclusion formed in both Q500qE and Q370qE steels preferentially dissolved and triggered the initial corrosion. The acidic environment created between the inclusions and the iron matrix further promoted the dissolution of the inclusions. Moreover, due to the discrepancy in corrosion tendency, galvanic couples generated between the bainite ferrite (BF) phase and martensite/residual austenite (M/A) island in the Q500qE steel as well as the ferrite phase and pearlite phase in the Q370qE steel, accelerating the initial corrosion. In addition, pearlite facilitates a faster spread rate of local corrosion compared to bainite. Furthermore, with prolonged exposure, Q500qE steel exhibited more uniform and dense structure of the corrosion products layer, demonstrating a higher corrosion resistance than Q370qE steel. Finally, the mechanistic model was established to illustrate the influence of inclusions and microstructure on corrosion initiation and propagation of weathering steels.

This work evaluated a corrosion inhibitor that consists of a mixture of a long chain silanol and cerium(III) salt, to protect carbon steel in 0.1 mol L–1 NaCl solution. The inhibitor solution was obtained after hydrolysis of the silane in the presence of the cerium salt. The silane concentration was kept constant at 400 ppm, while the cerium ions variated in 25, 50, and 100 ppm. The electrochemical measurements showed inhibition efficiency (% I.E.) above 96% for carbon steel in NaCl 0.1 mol L–1, in the best condition of the mixture of silanol and Ce (III) ions. The Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of inhibitors in the carbon steel surface even out of the solution containing the inhibitors as a persistent adsorbed film. Contact angle measurements showed the surface hydrophobicity imparted by the adsorbed corrosion inhibitor layer. SVET measurements confirmed that the corrosion inhibitors mixture can block both anodic and cathodic reactions. The studied inhibitors showed to be more efficient and/or cheaper than traditional corrosion inhibitors for neutral media.

The inhibition effect of the cocoa bean shell powder (CBSP) on SAE 1008 carbon steel was studied in acidic medium (HCl 0.5 mol L-1) by electrochemical techniques and gravimetric measurements. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to the chemical and morphological characterization. The gravimetric and EIS results showed that the corrosion rate decreases with increasing inhibitor concentration, reaching the maximum value of 97.92% in 1.77 g L-1 inhibitor (highest concentration studied). Even at the lowest concentration (0.44 g L-1) good corrosion inhibition efficiency (96.03%) was observed. The polarization curves indicated that the CBSP acts as a mixed type inhibitor. The inhibitory molecules adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The inhibitor economic evaluation showed that the use of CBSP is 48-616 times cheaper than traditional inhibitors. The results showed that CBSP is an efficient corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel and its production is financially attractive.

The susceptibility to localised corrosion of the high strength alloys, AA2050-T84 and AA7050-T7451, used in the aerospace industry, was investigated in this study by localised electrochemical techniques, specifically, scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET), in 0.005 mol L−1 NaCl solution. The study was initially carried out using both alloys individually and then, coupling the two alloys and evaluating the effect of galvanic coupling between them. The results revealed that the AA2050-T84, being nobler than the AA7050-T7451, presented higher corrosion current density values when tested in isolation and the depth of corrosion penetration was significantly deeper in the AA2050-T84 alloy than in the AA7050-T7451. However, galvanic coupling of the two alloys resulted in cathodic protection of the AA2050-T84 alloy and a reduction in corrosion current densities on both alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to acquire the current density distribution on dissolving of Mg, MgZn2 (η -phase), Mg2Si (ß-phase) and Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 (Q-phase) surface in NaCl solutions. Design/methodology/approach: MgZn2 (η -phase), Mg2Si (ß-phase) and Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 (Q-phase) are important intermetallic compounds found in aluminum alloys. Insitu scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) was used to acquire the current density distribution on dissolving of Mg, MgZn2 (η -phase), Mg2Si (ß-phase) and Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 (Q-phase) surface in NaCl solutions scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) was used to characterize the corroded surface. Findings: SVET maps reveal that these compounds display characteristic dissolution features. Mg and MgZn2 displayed localized anodic and cathodic sites while that of Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 > Mg2Si displayed a diffused distribution of anodic and cathodic sites. The magnitude of the integrated anodic current densities on the compounds was noted to decrease with the progress of time, and the order of the magnitude of the current density with respect to the compounds is Mg > Mg2Si > Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 > MgZn2. SEM/EDX reveal that the highest mass loss recorded after the SVET test was manifested by Mg2Si followed by MgZn2 then Al4Cu2Mg8Si7. Originality/value: Auxiliary information on the current density distribution on the corroding sample surface at the microscopic scale has been provided by SVET thereby taking care of certain limitations of traditional corrosion monitoring techniques such as gravimetric, hydrogen evolution and electrochemical measurements. In this study, a vanadium (V) and tannic acid-based composite conversion coating (VTACC) was prepared on 6063 aluminum alloy (AA6063) to increase its corrosion resistance. The surface morphology and compositions of the VTACCs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was investigated by linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). The self-healing ability of the coating was detected by SEM, EDS, and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) measurements. The coating mainly consisted of metal oxides, including Al2O3, VO2, V2O3, and V2O5, and metal organic complexes (Al and V-complexes). The electrochemical measurement results indicated that the best corrosion resistance of VTACC was acquired when the treatment time was 12 min. Furthermore, because a new coating with vanadium rich oxide was developed on the scratch area, artificial scratch VTACC surfaces were repaired after several days of immersion in 3.5-wt% NaCl solution.

In this work, the corrosion behavior of copper in a simulated organic acid environment containing formic acid and acetic acid was investigated by electrochemical testing and surface characterization. In addition to deducing the corrosion mechanism of copper in the organic acid corrosion environment, the corrosion inhibitor BTA was also used to slow down the corrosion of copper by organic acid. The results show that the corrosion rate of copper in the two groups of organic acids first decreases and then increases with the immersion time. Microelectrochemical (Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique) results shows that the anodic peak of the sample is higher in formic acid. Formic acid is more corrosive. The corrosion products of red copper gradually increased in the two groups of organic acid atmospheres, and the final corrosion products were cuprous oxide, copper formate particles and copper acetate hydrate, respectively. When the concentration of BTA is 0.5 g/L, the electrochemical activity of TP2 copper is weakened, the surface of the sample is relatively smooth, there are no large corrosion pits, and the corrosion rate is reduced.

This work aims to investigate the possible use of the palm kernel cake powder (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) as corrosion inhibitor for ASTM 1020 carbon steel in acidic media (0.5 mol L−1 HCl). The investigation was carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curves, gravimetric technique and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed as chemical and surface characterization techniques, respectively. The results of the EIS and gravimetric tests showed that the substance acts as an effective corrosion inhibitor and inhibition efficiency (IE) increases according with the increase of the corrosion inhibitor concentration in the aggressive medium. The highest IE of 87% was obtained for the highest corrosion inhibitor concentration used (1.77 g/L). The polarization curves revealed a mixed inhibitor. The adsorption of the studied inhibitor on carbon steel surface obeyed Langmuir isotherm. The SVET measurements did not reveal anodic or cathodic activities in the substrate surface in the presence of the inhibitor, revealing that the corrosion inhibitor was able to block both reactions. FTIR analyses identified in the powder the presence of hydroxyl group, aromatic rings, nitrogen and oxygen in such groups as amines and oleaginous acid, which can be responsible for the inhibitory properties of the whole material. SEM analyses showed that the corrosion process was retarded when the inhibitor was added to electrolyte. The results indicate that the powder of palm kernel cake is promising for use as corrosion inhibition purpose for carbon steel in acidic media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carmakers must achieve the worldwide targets for lightweight materials, safety and reducing the fuel consumption. The use of press-hardened steel (PHS), in vehicle structures has been contributing with these requirements. This type of steel is widely used for the hot-stamping which consists in heating the steel blank to total austenitization temperature and then transferring it from the furnace into the die tool where the steel is formed and quenched at the same time. PHS is usually protect with metallic coatings in order to avoid both steel oxidation and decarburization. Hot-dip Al-Si coating is currently the main used in this application. However, alternative coatings, like zinc-based, are under investigation. This work aims at evaluating the corrosion resistance of the 22MnB5 grade PHS, electroplated with Zn-Ni, before and after hot stamping, using the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Results from SVET showed that samples prior to hot stamping, the corrosion mechanism was uniform over the exposed surface, and was mainly related to selective dissolution of zinc from the coating. On the other hand, hot stamped samples showed localized corrosion mechanism with decrease in current with time of immersion due to the formation of corrosion products on the exposed surface.
