Study objectivesAdolescence is characterized by significant brain development, accompanied by changes in sleep timing and architecture. It also is a period of profound psychosocial changes, including the initiation of alcohol use; however, it is unknown how alcohol use affects sleep architecture in the context of adolescent development. We tracked developmental changes in polysomnographic (PSG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep measures and their relationship with emergent alcohol use in adolescents considering confounding effects (e.g. cannabis use).MethodsAdolescents (n = 94, 43% female, age: 12-21 years) in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) study had annual laboratory PSG recordings across 4-years. Participants were no/low drinkers at baseline.ResultsLinear mixed effect models showed developmental changes in sleep macrostructure and EEG, including a decrease in slow wave sleep and slow wave (delta) EEG activity with advancing age. Emergent moderate/heavy alcohol use across three follow-up years was associated with a decline in percentage rapid eye movement (REM) sleep over time, a longer sleep onset latency (SOL) and shorter total sleep time (TST) in older adolescents, and lower non-REM delta and theta power in males.ConclusionsThese longitudinal data show substantial developmental changes in sleep architecture. Emergent alcohol use during this period was associated with altered sleep continuity, architecture, and EEG measures, with some effects dependent on age and sex. These effects, in part, could be attributed to the effects of alcohol on underlying brain maturation processes involved in sleep-wake regulation.

Maintaining acceptable radiation performance over the entire operation bandwidth is a significant challenge in development of a miniaturised reconfigurable antenna. To address this issue, a new Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) based reconfigurable antenna using slow wave structure is presented in this study. The proposed SIW antenna is based on a layered construction with metallic blind vias connecting to ground plane of SIW. The multi-layer structure of SIW with blind vias helps to separate magnetic and electric fields in the SIW cavity. Thus, a slow wave effect is also utilised and it leads to 36% reduction in the antenna size as compared to conventional SIW cavity. To attain the polarisation and frequency reconfiguration, a cross slot is introduced in the top metallic layer of the SIW cavity and four PIN diodes are connected into the cross-slot arms. Experimental results exhibit frequency reconfigurability in different operating regions with resonant frequencies 4.35, 5, 5.8, 6.4, and 9.6 GHz. The polarisation reconfigurability of the proposed antenna is achieved at 5 GHz with LP/RHCP/LHCP. The proposed antenna exhibits 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 4.8 to 5.2 GHz with peak gain of 4.2 dBi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD) pathology impairs cognitive function. Yet some individuals with high amounts of AD pathology suffer marked memory impairment, while others with the same degree of pathology burden show little impairment. Why is this? One proposed explanation is cognitive reserve i.e., factors that confer resilience against, or compensation for the effects of AD pathology. Deep NREM slow wave sleep (SWS) is recognized to enhance functions of learning and memory in healthy older adults. However, that the quality of NREM SWS (NREM slow wave activity, SWA) represents a novel cognitive reserve factor in older adults with AD pathology, thereby providing compensation against memory dysfunction otherwise caused by high AD pathology burden, remains unknown.MethodsHere, we tested this hypothesis in cognitively normal older adults (N = 62) by combining 11C-PiB (Pittsburgh compound B) positron emission tomography (PET) scanning for the quantification of β-amyloid (Aβ) with sleep electroencephalography (EEG) recordings to quantify NREM SWA and a hippocampal-dependent face-name learning task.ResultsWe demonstrated that NREM SWA significantly moderates the effect of Aβ status on memory function. Specifically, NREM SWA selectively supported superior memory function in individuals suffering high Aβ burden, i.e., those most in need of cognitive reserve (B = 2.694, p = 0.019). In contrast, those without significant Aβ pathological burden, and thus without the same  need for cognitive reserve, did not similarly benefit from the presence of NREM SWA (B = -0.115, p = 0.876). This interaction between NREM SWA and Aβ status predicting memory function was significant after correcting for age, sex, Body Mass Index, gray matter atrophy, and previously identified cognitive reserve factors, such as education and physical activity (p = 0.042).ConclusionsThese findings indicate that NREM SWA is a novel cognitive reserve factor providing resilience against the memory impairment otherwise caused by high AD pathology burden. Furthermore, this cognitive reserve function of NREM SWA remained significant when accounting both for covariates, and factors previously linked to resilience, suggesting that sleep might be an independent cognitive reserve resource. Beyond such mechanistic insights are potential therapeutic implications. Unlike many other cognitive reserve factors (e.g., years of education, prior job complexity), sleep is a modifiable factor. As such, it represents an intervention possibility that may aid the preservation of cognitive function in the face of AD pathology, both present moment and longitudinally.

Background: The unexpected observation of calretinin immunoreactivity in smooth muscle cells in the muscularis propria of the cecum led to a more detailed examination of calretinin expression and its possible relationship to propulsive contractile activity around the vermiform appendix. Methods: Immunohistochemistry and RNA in situ hybridization were performed to analyze calretinin expression in intestinal samples from 33 patients at ages ranging from mid-gestation fetuses to adults, as well as in some potentially relevant animal models. Dual immunolabeling was done to compare calretinin localization with markers of smooth muscle and interstitial cells of Cajal. Results: Calretinin expression was observed consistently in the innermost smooth muscle layers of the muscularis interna in the human cecum, appendiceal base, and proximal ascending colon, but not elsewhere in the intestinal tract. Calretinin-positive smooth muscle cells did not co-express markers located in adjacent interstitial cells of Cajal. Muscular calretinin immunoreactivity was not detected in the ceca of mice or macaques, species which lack appendices, nor in the rabbit cecum or appendix. Conclusions: Localized expression of calretinin in cecal smooth muscle cells may reduce the likelihood of retrograde, calcium-mediated propulsive contractions from the proximal colon and suppress pro-inflammatory fecal stasis in the appendix. Intestinal motility is governed in part by bioelectrical slow-waves and spike-bursts. Mesenteric ischemia is a substantial clinical challenge, but its electrophysiological and contractile mechanisms are not well understood. Simultaneous high-resolution bioelectrical and video mapping techniques were used to capture the changes in slow-waves, spike-bursts, and contractile activity during baseline, ischemia, and reperfusion periods. Experiments were performed on anesthetized pigs where intestinal contractions were quantified using surface strain and diameter measurements, while slow-wave and spike-bursts were quantified using frequency and amplitude. Slow-waves entrainment within the ischemic region diminished during ischemia, resulting in irregular slow-wave activity and a reduction in the frequency from 12.4 ± 3.0 cycles-per-minute (cpm) to 2.5 ± 2.7 cpm (p = 0.0006). At the end of the reperfusion period, normal slow-wave entrainment was observed at a frequency of 11.5 ± 2.9 cpm. There was an increase in spike-burst activity between the baseline and ischemia periods (1.1 ± 1.4 cpm to 8.7 ± 3.3 cpm, p = 0.0003) along with a spasm of circumferential contractions. At the end of the reperfusion period, the frequency of spike-bursts decreased to 2.7 ± 1.4 cpm, and contractions subsided. The intestine underwent tonal contraction during ischemia, with the diameter decreasing from 29.3 ± 2.6 mm to 21.2 ± 6.2 mm (p = 0.0020). At the end of the reperfusion period, the intestinal diameter increased to 27.3 ± 3.9 mm. The decrease in slow-wave activity, increase in spike-bursts, and tonal contractions can objectively identify ischemic segments in the intestine. It is anticipated that the use of electrophysiological slow-wave and spike-burst biomarkers, along with contractile measures, could identify mesenteric ischemia in surgical settings and allow an objective biomarker for successful revascularization. Sleep is critical for health, cognition, and restorative processes, and yet, many experience chronic sleep restriction. Sleep interventions have been designed to enhance overnight sleep quality and physiology. Components of these interventions, like relaxation-based progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), have been studied in isolation and have shown direct effects on sleep architecture, including increasing time in restorative, slow-wave sleep (SWS). These relaxation methods have been understudied in naps, which are effective fatigue countermeasures that reduce deleterious effects of chronic sleep restriction. We hypothesised that PMR should boost SWS in a nap, as compared to an active control. We used a between-subject design in which healthy young adults underwent PMR training or listened to Mozart music (control) prior to a 90-min nap opportunity. We assessed changes in the amount and lateralisation of SWS, as evidence suggests left hemispheric lateralisation may be a proxy for recuperative sleep needs, and changes to state-dependent anxiety and fatigue before and after the nap to assess intervention success. We found PMR participants spent ~10 min more in SWS, equivalent to 125% more time, than the control group, and concomitantly, significantly less time in rapid eye movement sleep. PMR participants also had greater right lateralised slow-wave activity and delta activity compared to the control suggesting a more well-rested brain profile during sleep. Further, pre-sleep anxiety levels predicted nap architecture in the intervention group, suggesting benefits may be impacted by anxiety. The feasibility and accessibility of PMR prior to a nap make this an interesting research avenue to pursue with strong translational application.

Sleep spindles are important for sleep quality and cognitive functions, with their coordination with slow oscillations (SOs) potentially organizing cross-region reactivation of memory traces. Here, we describe the organization of spindles on the electrode manifold and their relation to SOs. We analyzed the sleep night EEG of 34 subjects and detected spindles and SOs separately at each electrode. We compared spindle properties (frequency, duration, and amplitude) in slow wave sleep (SWS) and Stage 2 sleep (S2); and in spindles that coordinate with SOs or are uncoupled. We identified different topographical spindle types using clustering analysis that grouped together spindles co-detected across electrodes within a short delay (±300 ms). We then analyzed the properties of spindles of each type, and coordination to SOs. We found that SWS spindles are shorter than S2 spindles, and spindles at frontal electrodes have higher frequencies in S2 compared to SWS. Furthermore, S2 spindles closely following an SO (about 10% of all spindles) show faster frequency, shorter duration, and larger amplitude than uncoupled ones. Clustering identified Global, Local, Posterior, Frontal-Right and Left spindle types. At centro-parietal locations, Posterior spindles show faster frequencies compared to other types. Furthermore, the infrequent SO-spindle complexes are preferentially recruiting Global SO waves coupled with fast Posterior spindles. Our results suggest a non-uniform participation of spindles to complexes, especially evident in S2. This suggests the possibility that different mechanisms could initiate an SO-spindle complex compared to SOs and spindles separately. This has implications for understanding the role of SOs-spindle complexes in memory reactivation.

This paper presents a slow‐wave substrate integrated suspended parallel strip line (SW‐SISPSL) for the first time. The slow‐wave effect is produced by cascading high/low‐impedance SISPSL in the meander line configuration. Different from conventional single‐ended slow‐wave transmission lines, the proposed SW‐SISPSL supports differential signal transmission. The characteristic impedance and slow‐wave factor of the SW‐SISPSL are analyzed using equivalent circuit models. Using the proposed SW‐SISPSL and a SISPSL phase inverter, a very compact rat‐race coupler is implemented. The core circuit area of the slow‐wave rat‐race coupler is 0.083 λg × 0.089 λg, which is only 4.12% of the conventional topology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Slow wave and spindle coupling supports memory consolidation, and loss of coupling is linked with cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. Coupling is proposed to be a possible biomarker of neurological disease, yet little is known about the different subtypes of coupling that normally occur throughout human development and aging. Here we identify distinct subtypes of spindles within slow wave upstates and describe their relationships with sleep stage across the human lifespan. METHODS: Coupling within a cross-sectional cohort of 582 subjects was quantified from stages N2 and N3 sleep across ages 6-88 years old. Results were analyzed across the study population via mixed model regression. Within a subset of subjects, we further utilized coupling to identify discrete subtypes of slow waves by their coupled spindles. RESULTS: Two different subtypes of spindles were identified during the upstates of (distinct) slow waves: an early-fast spindle, more common in stage N2 sleep, and a late-fast spindle, more common in stage N3. We further found stages N2 and N3 sleep contain a mixture of discrete subtypes of slow waves, each identified by their unique coupled-spindle timing and frequency. The relative contribution of coupling subtypes shifts across the human lifespan, and a deeper sleep phenotype prevails with increasing age. CONCLUSIONS: Distinct subtypes of slow waves and coupled spindles form the composite of slow wave sleep. Our findings support a model of sleep-dependent synaptic regulation via discrete slow wave/spindle coupling subtypes and advance a conceptual framework for the development of coupling-based biomarkers in age-associated neurological disease.

The strength of cortical connectivity to the striatum influences the balance between behavioral variability and stability. Learning to consistently produce a skilled action requires plasticity in corticostriatal connectivity associated with repeated training of the action. However, it remains unknown whether such corticostriatal plasticity occurs during training itself or offline during time away from training, such as sleep. Here, we monitor the corticostriatal network throughout long-term skill learning in rats and find that non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep is a relevant period for corticostriatal plasticity. We first show that the offline activation of striatal NMDA receptors is required for skill learning. We then show that corticostriatal functional connectivity increases offline, coupled to emerging consistent skilled movements, and coupled cross-area neural dynamics. We then identify NREM sleep spindles as uniquely poised to mediate corticostriatal plasticity, through interactions with slow oscillations. Our results provide evidence that sleep shapes cross-area coupling required for skill learning.

This paper presents a multi-layered composite right-left-handed (CRLH) slow-wave substrate integrated waveguide (SW-SIW) circularly polarized (CP) leaky-wave antenna (LWA) having wide impedance bandwidth (measured: 14.6–18.25 GHz). The CRLH unit cell consists of three radiating slots on top metallic layer, arranged in a crown-shaped fashion, to achieve wideband circular polarization.The bottom ground plane of the standard SIW is connected to the SW structure of the LWA that consists of internal metalized blind vias. Due to the SW effect, a 33% reduction in lateral dimension is achieved, compared to a conventional SIW having the same cut-off frequency. At the same time, the phase velocity is also reduced leading to a reduction in longitudinal dimensions. The dimensions of the antenna are relatively small, with a size of 3.2 × 0.4x.07 λ3. The operating mechanism of the LWA having symmetrical and continuous backward-to-forward scanning range from −64 ° to 64 ° (128 °) is explained by an equivalent circuit model. The measured CP bandwidth (14.6–18.43 GHz) of the LWA completely overlaps the 10-dB return loss bandwidth. The compact dimension, wide symmetric beam scanning, completely overlapped CP, and return loss bandwidths are the major advantages of the proposed antenna.The LWA exhibits stable gain with a peak value of 11.3 dBic (gain variation: from 9.7 to 11.3 dB). Introduction: Two of the most important ion channels in the smooth muscle membrane are L-type and T-type calcium channels. L-type calcium channels are responsible for smooth muscle contraction, while T-type calcium channels are involved in cell membrane depolarization. Methods: In this study, a model consisting of 1200 cells was used to simulate the smooth muscle of the gastric wall. The paper explores the effects of blocking 10%, 50%, 90%, and 100% of L-type and T-type calcium channels on the spatiotemporal wavefront propagation in human gastric wall smooth muscle cells, simulated separately. Results: The results showed that complete blockage had the most significant effect on the slow-wave. Blockage of the L-type calcium channel led to a reduction of -3.4% and -0.8% in the membrane potential during the spike and plateau phases, respectively. The T-type calcium channel reduced the spike and resting membrane potential by -1.8% and -0.9%, respectively. In addition, the L-type calcium channel exhibited a greater impact on reducing muscle contraction compared to the T-type calcium channel. This suggests that higher blockage of calcium channels led to decreased membrane potential during slow-wave phases and reduced muscle contraction, compared to the physiological state. Conclusion: Blocking ion channels in electrophysiological models can potentially help control gastrointestinal tract motility disorders and smooth muscle contraction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been reported that adult ostriches displayed the longest episodes of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (up to 5 min) and more REM sleep (24% of the nighttime) than any other bird species. If the mammalian ontogenetic trend exists in the ostrich, then the amounts of REM and the duration of sleep episodes in young ostriches may be greater than those reported in adults. We investigated sleep in 1.5-3.5 month old ostrich chicks. Recordings were conducted during nighttime (20:00-08:00), the main sleep period in ostriches, which are diurnal. The polygrams were scored in 4-s epochs for waking, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, as in other bird studies. REM sleep in ostrich chicks occurred during both cortical EEG activation and during slow waves, as was described in adult ostriches. The chicks spent 69.3% ± 1.5% of the night in NREM sleep. REM sleep occupied 14.1% ± 1.8% of the night or 16.8% ± 2.0% of nighttime sleep. Episodes of REM sleep lasted on average 10 ± 1 s and ranged between 4 and 40 s. Therefore, the total amount and duration of REM sleep episodes in ostrich chicks were substantially smaller than reported in adult ostriches while the amounts of NREM sleep did not greatly differ. The developmental profile of REM sleep ontogenesis in the ostrich may be remarkably different from what has been reported in all studied mammals and birds.

OBJECTIVES: To determine how continuous spike and wave during slow wave sleep (CSWS) is currently managed and to compare the effectiveness of current treatment strategies using a database from 11 pediatric epilepsy centers in the US. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study gathered information on baseline clinical characteristics, CSWS etiology, and treatment(s) in consecutive patients seen between 2014 and 2016 at 11 epilepsy referral centers. Treatments were categorized as benzodiazepines, steroids, other antiseizure medications (ASMs), or other therapies. Two measures of treatment response (clinical improvement as noted by the treating physician; and electroencephalography improvement) were compared across therapies, controlling for baseline variables. RESULTS: Eighty-one children underwent 153 treatment trials during the study period (68 trials of benzodiazepines, 25 of steroids, 45 of ASMs, 14 of other therapies). Children most frequently received benzodiazepines (62%) or ASMs (27%) as first line therapy. Treatment choice did not differ based on baseline clinical variables, nor did these variables correlate with outcome. After adjusting for baseline variables, children had a greater odds of clinical improvement with benzodiazepines (OR 3.32, 95%CI 1.57-7.04, P = .002) or steroids (OR 4.04, 95%CI 1.41-11.59, P = .01) than with ASMs and a greater odds of electroencephalography improvement after steroids (OR 3.36, 95% CI 1.09-10.33, P = .03) than after ASMs. CONCLUSIONS: Benzodiazepines and ASMs are the most frequent initial therapy prescribed for CSWS in the US. Our data suggests that ASMs are inferior to benzodiazepines and steroids and support earlier use of these therapies. Multicenter prospective studies that rigorously assess treatment protocols and outcomes are needed.

ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that reduced slow-wave sleep, or N3 sleep, which is thought to underlie the restorative functions of sleep, is associated with MRI markers of brain aging, we evaluated this relationship in the community-based Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort using polysomnography and brain MRI.MethodsWe studied 492 participants (age 58.8 ± 8.8 years, 49.4% male) free of neurological diseases who completed a brain MRI scan and in-home overnight polysomnography to assess slow-wave sleep (absolute duration and percentage of total sleep). Volumes of total brain, total cortical, frontal cortical, subcortical gray matter, hippocampus, and white matter hyperintensities were investigated as a percentage of intracranial volume, and the presence of covert brain infarcts was evaluated. Linear and logistic regression models were adjusted for age, age squared, sex, time interval between polysomnography and MRI (3.3 ± 1.0 years), APOE ε4 carrier status, stroke risk factors, sleeping pill use, body mass index, and depression.ResultsLess slow-wave sleep was associated with lower cortical brain volume (absolute duration, β [standard error] = 0.20 [0.08], p = 0.015; percentage, 0.16 [0.08], p = 0.044), lower subcortical brain volume (percentage, 0.03 [0.02], p = 0.034), and higher white matter hyperintensities volume (absolute duration, -0.12 [0.05], p = 0.010; percentage, -0.10 [0.04], p = 0.033). Slow-wave sleep duration was not associated with hippocampal volume or the presence of covert brain infarcts.ConclusionLoss of slow-wave sleep might facilitate accelerated brain aging, as evidence by its association with MRI markers suggestive of brain atrophy and injury. Alternatively, subtle injuries and accelerated aging might reduce the ability of the brain to produce slow-wave sleep.

A growing body of evidence suggests that sleep can help to decouple the memory of emotional experiences from their associated affective charge. This process is thought to rely on the spontaneous reactivation of emotional memories during sleep, though it is still unclear which sleep stage is optimal for such reactivation. We examined this question by explicitly manipulating memory reactivation in both rapid-eye movement sleep (REM) and slow-wave sleep (SWS) using targeted memory reactivation (TMR) and testing the impact of this manipulation on habituation of subjective arousal responses across a night. Our results show that TMR during REM, but not SWS significantly decreased subjective arousal, and this effect is driven by the more negative stimuli. These results support one aspect of the sleep to forget, sleep to remember (SFSR) hypothesis which proposes that emotional memory reactivation during REM sleep underlies sleep-dependent habituation.

Experimental sleep-wake disruption in rodents and humans causally modulates β-amyloid (Aβ) dynamics (e.g., [1-3]). This leads to the hypothesis that, beyond cross-sectional associations, impaired sleep structure and physiology could represent prospective biomarkers of the speed with which Aβ accumulates over time. Here, we test the hypothesis that initial baseline measures of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep slow-wave activity (SWA) and sleep quality (efficiency) provide future forecasting sensitivity to the rate of Aβ accumulation over subsequent years. A cohort of clinically normal older adults was assessed using objective sleep polysomnography in combination with longitudinal tracking of Aβ accumulation with [11C]PiB positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Both the proportion of NREM SWA below 1 Hz and the measure of sleep efficiency predicted the speed (slope) of subsequent Aβ deposition over time, and these associations remained robust when taking into account additional cofactors of interest (e.g., age, sex, sleep apnea). Moreover, these measures were specific, such that no other macro- and microphysiological architecture metrics of sleep demonstrated such sensitivity. Our data support the proposal that objective sleep markers could be part of a set of biomarkers that statistically forecast the longitudinal trajectory of cortical Aβ deposition in the human brain. Sleep may therefore represent a potentially affordable, scalable, repeatable, and non-invasive tool for quantifying of Aβ pathological progression, prior to cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Neural activity patterns of recent experiences are reactivated during sleep in structures critical for memory storage, including hippocampus and neocortex. This reactivation process is thought to aid memory consolidation. Although synaptic rearrangement dynamics following learning involve an interplay between slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, most physiological evidence implicates SWS directly following experience as a preferred window for reactivation. Here, we show that reactivation occurs in both REM and SWS and that coordination of REM and SWS activation on the same day is associated with rapid learning of a motor skill. We performed 6 h recordings from cells in rats' motor cortex as they were trained daily on a skilled reaching task. In addition to SWS following training, reactivation occurred in REM, primarily during the pre-task rest period, and REM and SWS reactivation occurred on the same day in rats that acquired the skill rapidly. Both pre-task REM and post-task SWS activation were coordinated with muscle activity during sleep, suggesting a functional role for reactivation in skill learning. Our results provide the first demonstration that reactivation in REM sleep occurs during motor skill learning and that coordinated reactivation in both sleep states on the same day, although at different times, is beneficial for skill learning. Interaction between hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) and UP states, possibly by coordinated reactivation of memory traces, is conjectured to play an important role in memory consolidation. Recently, it was reported that SWRs were differentiated into multiple subtypes. However, whether cortical UP states can also be classified into subtypes is not known. Here, we analysed neural ensemble activity from the medial prefrontal cortex from rats trained to run a spatial sequence-memory task. Application of the hidden Markov model (HMM) with three states to epochs of UP-DOWN oscillations identified DOWN states and two subtypes of UP state (UP-1 and UP-2). The two UP subtypes were distinguished by differences in duration, with UP-1 having a longer duration than UP-2, as well as differences in the speed of population vector (PV) decorrelation, with UP-1 decorrelating more slowly than UP-2. Reactivation of recent memory sequences predominantly occurred in UP-2. Short-duration reactivating UP states were dominated by UP-2 whereas long-duration ones exhibit transitions from UP-1 to UP-2. Thus, recent memory reactivation, if it occurred within long-duration UP states, typically was preceded by a period of slow PV evolution not related to recent experience, and which we speculate may be related to previously encoded information. If that is the case, then the transition from UP-1 to UP-2 subtypes may help gradual integration of recent experience with pre-existing cortical memories by interleaving the two in the same UP state. How are memories transferred from short-term to long-term storage? Systems-level memory consolidation is thought to be dependent on the coordinated interplay of cortical slow waves, thalamo-cortical sleep spindles and hippocampal ripple oscillations. However, it is currently unclear how the selective interaction of these cardinal sleep oscillations is organized to support information reactivation and transfer. Here, using human intracranial recordings, we demonstrate that the prefrontal cortex plays a key role in organizing the ripple-mediated information transfer during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. We reveal a temporally precise form of coupling between prefrontal slow-wave and spindle oscillations, which actively dictates the hippocampal-neocortical dialogue and information transfer. Our results suggest a model of the human sleeping brain in which rapid bidirectional interactions, triggered by the prefrontal cortex, mediate hippocampal activation to optimally time subsequent information transfer to the neocortex during NREM sleep.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with disrupted circadian rhythms and sleep, which are thought to reflect an impairment of internal circadian timekeeping that contribute to clinical symptoms and disease progression. To evaluate these hypotheses, a suitable preclinical model of AD is needed. We performed a comprehensive assessment of circadian rhythms and sleep in the APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP/PS1) mouse model using long-term in vivo electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and behavioral assays from 5 to 22 months of age. APP/PS1 mice were crossed with a PERIOD2::LUCIFERASE (PER2::LUC) mouse model to evaluate synchrony among peripheral circadian oscillators. The APP/PS1 mice exhibited a mild but persistent phase delay of nocturnal activity onset in 12:12h light:dark conditions, as well as a shift toward higher frequencies in the EEG power spectra compared to littermate controls. Our results suggest that APP/PS1 mice may not be the optimal preclinical model for studying the specific circadian changes associated with AD but that quantitative EEG may offer a sensitive measure of AD-associated changes in sleep quality that can be modeled in APP/PS1 mice.

Electrical status epilepticus in sleep (ESES) is an age-related, self-limited epileptic encephalopathy. The syndrome is characterized by cognitive and behavioral abnormalities and a specific EEG pattern of continuous spikes and waves during slow-wave sleep. While spikes and sharp waves are known to result in transient cognitive impairment during learning and memory tasks performed during the waking state, the effect of epileptiform discharges during sleep on cognition and behavior is unclear. There is increasing evidence that abnormalities of coherence, a measure of the consistency of the phase difference between two EEG signals when compared over time, is an important feature of brain oscillations and plays a role in cognition and behavior. The objective of this study was to determine whether coherence of EEG activity is altered during slow-wave sleep in children with ESES when compared to typically developing children. We examined coherence during epochs of ESES versus epochs when ESES was not present. In addition, we compared coherence during slow-wave sleep between typically developing children and children with ESES. ESES was associated with remarkably high coherences at all bandwidths and most electrode pairs. While the high coherence was largely attributed to the spikes and spike-and-wave discharge, activity between spikes and spike-and-wave discharge also demonstrated high coherence. This study indicates that EEG coherence during ESES is relatively high. Whether these increases in coherence correlate with the cognitive and behavioral abnormalities seen in children with this EEG pattern remains to be determined.

Electrophysiological sleep rhythms have been shown to impact human waking cognition, but their spatio-temporal dynamics are not understood. We investigated how slow oscillations (SOs; 0.5-4 Hz) are organized during a night of polysomnographically-recorded sleep, focusing on the scalp electrode manifold. We detected troughs of SOs at all electrodes independently and analyzed the concurrent SO troughs found in every other electrode within ±400 ms. We used a k-clustering algorithm to categorize the spatial patterns of SO trough co-occurrence into three types (Global, Local or Frontal) depending on their footprint on the electrode manifold during the considered time window. When comparing the clusters across non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep stages, we found a relatively larger fraction of Local SOs in slow wave sleep (SWS) compared to stage 2, and larger fraction of Global SOs in stage 2 compared to SWS. The probability of SO detection in time between two electrodes showed that SO troughs of all types co-occurred at some nearby electrodes, but only Global troughs had traveling wave profiles, moving anteriorly to posteriorly. Global SOs also had larger amplitudes at frontal electrodes and stronger coupling with fast spindles (12.5-16 Hz). Indeed, SO-spindle complexes were more likely to be detected following a Global SO trough compared to SOs in other clusters. Also, the phase-amplitude modulation of SOs over spindles (modulation vector) was higher for Global SOs across the electrode manifold. Given the recent evidence of a link between thalamocortical coupling and cognition, our findings suggest stronger cognitive relevance of Global SOs as compared to other SO types in sleep memory processing. No clinical trial is related to this study.

The theta rhythm during waking has been associated with voluntary motor activity and learning processes involving the hippocampus. Theta also occurs continuously during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep where it likely serves memory consolidation. Theta amplitude builds across wakefulness and is the best indicator of the homeostatic need for non-REM (NREM) sleep. Although REM sleep is homeostatically regulated independently of NREM sleep, the drivers of REM sleep regulation are under debate. The dynamics of theta within REM sleep bouts have not been thoroughly explored. We equipped 20 male rats with sleep instrumentation and hippocampal electrodes to measure theta across normal sleep/waking periods over the first 4 h of the sleep phase on two consecutive days. We found that theta power decreased by a third, on average, within individual REM sleep bouts, but recovered between bouts. Thus, there was no general decline in theta power across the duration of the recording period or between days. The time constant of theta power decline within a REM sleep bout was the same whether the bout was short, midlength, or long, and did not predict the behavioral state immediately following the REM sleep bout. Interestingly, the more time spent in NREM sleep prior to REM sleep, the larger the decline in theta power during REM sleep, indicating that REM sleep theta may be homeostatically driven by NREM sleep just as NREM delta power is driven by the length of prior waking and by waking theta. Potential causes and implications for this phenomenon are discussed.

Unihemispheric slow wave sleep (USWS) is a unique form of sleep in which one brain hemisphere maintains low voltage electrical activity indicative of waking while the opposite exhibits slow wave electrical activity indicative of sleep. USWS is present in several marine mammals and in some species of birds. One proposed biological function of USWS is to enable the animal to monitor the environment to detect predators or conspecifics. While asymmetrical eye state was often observed during behavioral sleep in birds and marine mammals, electrophysiological (electroencephalogram, EEG) correlates between the asymmetry of eye state and EEG of two cortical hemispheres have not been reliably established. This study examined the association between eye state and EEG activity during aquatic sleep in two subadult northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), taking advantage of the simultaneous visibility of both eyes when the seals were in the prone position. We found that during USWS the eye contralateral to the sleeping hemisphere was closed on average 99.4±0.1% of the recording time. The eye contralateral to the waking hemisphere opened briefly for on average 1.9±0.1 sec with a rate of 8.2±1.0 per min. This eye was open on average 24.8±2.5% of the USWS time and it was closed no longer than 3 sec, on average 39.4±5.6% of the time. These data indicate that fur seals sleep in seawater by having intermittent visual monitoring. Our findings document the extent of visual monitoring of both eyes during USWS and support the idea that USWS allows intermittent visual vigilance. Thus, USWS serves two functions in the fur seal, facilitating movement and visual vigilance, which may also be the case in cetaceans.

BACKGROUND:Recent studies reveal an association between slow-wave sleep (SWS), amyloid-β aggregation, and cognition. OBJECTIVE:This retrospective study examines whether long-term use of trazodone, an SWS enhancer, is associated with delayed cognitive decline. METHODS:We identified 25 regular trazodone users (mean age 75.4±7.5; 9 women, 16 men) who carried a diagnosis of Alzheimer's dementia, mild cognitive impairment, or normal cognition, and 25 propensity-matched trazodone non-users (mean age 74.5±8.0; 13 women, 12 men), accounting for age, sex, education, type of sleep deficit (hypersomnia, insomnia, parasomnia), diagnosis, and baseline Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Longitudinal group differences in cognitive testing were evaluated through repeated measures tests over an average inter-evaluation interval of four years. RESULTS:Trazodone non-users had 2.6-fold faster decline MMSE (primary outcome) compared to trazodone users, 0.27 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.07-0.48) versus 0.70 (95% CI: 0.50-0.90) points per year (p = 0.023). The observed effects were especially associated with subjective improvement of sleep complaints in post-hoc analyses (p = 0.0006). Secondary outcomes of other cognitive and functional scores had variable worsening in non-users and varied in significance when accounting for co-administered medications and multiple comparisons. Trazodone effects on MMSE remained significant within participants with AD-predicted pathology, with 2.4-fold faster decline in non-users (p = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest an association between trazodone use and delayed cognitive decline, adding support for a potentially attractive and cost-effective intervention in dementia. Whether the observed relationship of trazodone to cognitive function is causal or an indirect marker of other effects, such as treated sleep disruption, and if such effects are mediated through SWS enhancement requires confirmation through prospective studies.

This paper presents a highly miniaturized tuneable microstrip line phase shifter for 5 GHz to 67 GHz. The design takes advantage of the microstrip topology by substituting the ground plane by a metallic-nanowire-filled porous alumina membrane (NaM). This leads to a slow-wave (SW) effect of the transmission line; thus, the transmission line can be physically compact while maintaining its electric length. By applying a liquid crystal (LC) with its anisotropic permittivity as substrate between the transmission line and the NaM, a tuneable microstrip line phase shifter is realized. Three demonstrators are identically fabricated filled with different types of high-performance microwave LCs from three generations (GT3-23001, GT5-26001 and GT7-29001). The measurement results show good matching in a $50\ \Omega$ system with reflection less than −10 dB over a wide frequency range. These demonstrators are able to reach a maximum figure of merit (FoM) of 41 $^{\circ }$/dB, 48 $^{\circ }$/dB, and 70 $^{\circ }$/dB for different LCs (GT3-23001, GT5-26001 and GT7-29001, respectively). In addition, experiments show that all three LCs should be biased with square wave voltage at approximately 1 kHz to achieve maximum tuneability and response speed. The achieved response times with GT3-23001, GT5-26001 and GT7-29001 are 116 ms, 613 ms, and 125 ms, respectively, which are much faster than other reported LC phase shifter implementations. Large-signal analysis shows that these implementations have high linearity with third-order interception (IP3) points of approximately 60 dBm and a power handling capability of 25 dBm.

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a frequency-scanned slotted waveguide antenna with a closed stopband which has a low sensitivity to the fabrication errors. The antenna is implemented as a slotted slow-wave waveguide by loading a standard WR22 waveguide with elliptical posts. A systematic design approach for scanning through broadside and closing the stopband with a reduced sensitivity to fabrication tolerances is discussed in the paper. This approach allows for fabricating the antenna using CNC machining with a tolerance of +/−0.13 mm for the waveguide and a tolerance of +/−0.05 mm for the posts. The antenna beam can be steered from −38° to +27° by changing the frequency from 27 GHz to 34.7 GHz. The effective radiating length of the antenna is $27.6\lambda $ corresponding to a 1.75° half-power beamwidth while its radiation efficiency changes between 54% and 90% throughout the steering range.

Sleep is critical for proper memory consolidation. The locus coeruleus (LC) releases norepinephrine throughout the brain except when the LC falls silent throughout rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and prior to each non-REM (NREM) sleep spindle. We hypothesize that these transient LC silences allow the synaptic plasticity that is necessary to incorporate new information into pre-existing memory circuits. We found that spontaneous LC activity within sleep spindles triggers a decrease in spindle power. By optogenetically stimulating norepinephrine-containing LC neurons at 2 Hz during sleep, we reduced sleep spindle occurrence, as well as NREM delta power and REM theta power, without causing arousals or changing sleep amounts. Stimulating the LC during sleep following a hippocampus-dependent food location learning task interfered with consolidation of newly learned locations and reconsolidation of previous locations, disrupting next-day place cell activity. The LC stimulation-induced reduction in NREM sleep spindles, delta, and REM theta and reduced ripple-spindle coupling all correlated with decreased hippocampus-dependent performance on the task. Thus, periods of LC silence during sleep following learning are essential for normal spindle generation, delta and theta power, and consolidation of spatial memories.

Recent studies have identified an especially important role for basal forebrain GABAergic (BFVGAT) neurons in the regulation of behavioral waking and fast cortical rhythms associated with cognition. However, BFVGAT neurons comprise several neurochemically and anatomically distinct subpopulations, including parvalbumin-containing BFVGAT neurons and somatostatin-containing BFVGAT neurons (BFSOM neurons), and it was recently reported that optogenetic activation of BFSOM neurons increases the probability of a wakefulness to non-rapid-eye movement (NREM) sleep transition when stimulated during the rest period of the animal. This finding was unexpected given that most BFSOM neurons are not NREM sleep active and that central administration of the synthetic somatostatin analog, octreotide, suppresses NREM sleep or increases REM sleep. Here we used a combination of genetically driven chemogenetic and optogenetic activation, chemogenetic inhibition, and ablation approaches to further explore the in vivo role of BFSOM neurons in arousal control. Our findings indicate that acute activation or inhibition of BFSOM neurons is neither wakefulness nor NREM sleep promoting and is without significant effect on the EEG, and that chronic loss of these neurons is without effect on total 24 h sleep amounts, although a small but significant increase in waking was observed in the lesioned mice during the early active period. Our in vitro cell recordings further reveal electrophysiological heterogeneity in BFSOM neurons, specifically suggesting at least two distinct subpopulations. Together, our data support the more nuanced view that BFSOM neurons are electrically heterogeneous and are not NREM sleep or wake promoting per se, but may exert, in particular during the early active period, a modest inhibitory influence on arousal circuitry.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The cellular basal forebrain (BF) is a highly complex area of the brain that is implicated in a wide range of higher-level neurobiological processes, including regulating and maintaining normal levels of electrocortical and behavioral arousal. The respective in vivo roles of BF cell populations and their neurotransmitter systems in the regulation of electrocortical and behavioral arousal remains incompletely understood. Here we seek to define the neurobiological contribution of GABAergic somatostatin-containing BF neurons to arousal control. Understanding the respective contribution of BF cell populations to arousal control may provide critical insight into the pathogenesis of a host of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and the cognitive impairments of normal aging.

OBJECTIVE: Exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress has been associated with increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). However, interstudy variability in this relationship suggests the presence of moderating factors. The current study aimed to test the hypothesis that poor nocturnal sleep, defined as short total sleep time or low slow-wave sleep, would moderate the relationship between cardiovascular reactivity and IMT. METHODS: Participants (N = 99, 65.7% female, age = 59.3 ± 9.3 years) completed a two-night laboratory sleep study and cardiovascular examination where sleep and IMT were measured. The multisource interference task was used to induce acute psychological stress, while systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were monitored. Moderation was tested using the PROCESS framework in SPSS. RESULTS: Slow-wave sleep significantly moderated the relationship between all cardiovascular stress reactivity variables and IMT (all pinteraction ≤ .048, all ΔRinteraction ≥ .027). Greater stress reactivity was associated with higher IMT values in the low slow-wave sleep group and lower IMT values in the high slow-wave sleep group. No moderating effects of total sleep time were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide evidence that nocturnal slow-wave sleep moderates the relationship between cardiovascular stress reactivity and IMT and may buffer the effect of daytime stress-related disease processes.

Rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep are controlled by specific neuronal circuits. Here we show that galanin-expressing GABAergic neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) comprise separate subpopulations with opposing effects on REM versus NREM sleep. Microendoscopic calcium imaging revealed diverse sleep-wake activity of DMH GABAergic neurons, but the galanin-expressing subset falls into two distinct groups, either selectively activated (REM-on) or suppressed (REM-off) during REM sleep. Retrogradely labeled, preoptic area (POA)-projecting galaninergic neurons are REM-off, whereas the raphe pallidus (RPA)-projecting neurons are primarily REM-on. Bidirectional optogenetic manipulations showed that the POA-projecting neurons promote NREM sleep and suppress REM sleep, while the RPA-projecting neurons have the opposite effects. Thus, REM/NREM switch is regulated antagonistically by DMH galaninergic neurons with intermingled cell bodies but distinct axon projections.

Animal studies support the hypothesis that in slow-wave sleep, replay of waking neocortical activity under hippocampal guidance leads to memory consolidation. However, no intracranial electrophysiological evidence for replay exists in humans. We identified consistent sequences of population firing peaks across widespread cortical regions during complete waking periods. The occurrence of these "Motifs" were compared between sleeps preceding the waking period ("Sleep-Pre") when the Motifs were identified, and those following ("Sleep-Post"). In all subjects, the majority of waking Motifs (most of which were novel) had more matches in Sleep-Post than in Sleep-Pre. In rodents, hippocampal replay occurs during local sharp-wave ripples, and the associated neocortical replay tends to occur during local sleep spindles and down-to-up transitions. These waves may facilitate consolidation by sequencing cell-firing and encouraging plasticity. Similarly, we found that Motifs were coupled to neocortical spindles, down-to-up transitions, theta bursts, and hippocampal sharp-wave ripples. While Motifs occurring during cognitive task performance were more likely to have more matches in subsequent sleep, our studies provide no direct demonstration that the replay of Motifs contributes to consolidation. Nonetheless, these results confirm a core prediction of the dominant neurobiological theory of human memory consolidation.

BackgroundMild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairments in military service members, Veterans, and civilians. However, few treatments are available for mTBI, partially because the mechanism of persistent mTBI deficits is not fully understood.MethodsWe used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neuronal changes in individuals with mTBI following a passive neurofeedback-based treatment programme called IASIS. This programme involved applying low-intensity pulses using transcranial electrical stimulation (LIP-tES) with electroencephalography monitoring. Study participants included six individuals with mTBI and persistent post-concussive symptoms (PCS). MEG exams were performed at baseline and follow-up to evaluate the effect of IASIS on brain functioning.ResultsAt the baseline MEG exam, all participants had abnormal slow-waves. In the follow-up MEG exam, the participants showed significantly reduced abnormal slow-waves with an average reduction of 53.6 ± 24.6% in slow-wave total score. The participants also showed significant reduction of PCS scores after IASIS treatment, with an average reduction of 52.76 ± 26.4% in PCS total score.ConclusionsThe present study demonstrates, for the first time, the neuroimaging-based documentation of the effect of LIP-tES treatment on brain functioning in mTBI. The mechanisms of LIP-tES treatment are discussed, with an emphasis on LIP-tES's potentiation of the mTBI healing process.

Abstract Background Cyclic motor patterns (CMP) are the predominant motor pattern in the distal colon, and are important in both health and disease. Their origin, mechanism and relation to bioelectrical slow-waves remain incompletely understood. During abdominal surgery, an increase in the CMP occurs in the distal colon. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of detecting propagating slow waves and spike waves in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution (HR), serosal electrical mapping. Methods HR electrical recordings were obtained from the distal colon using validated flexible PCB arrays (6 × 16 electrodes; 4 mm inter-electrode spacing; 2.4 cm2, 0.3 mm diameter) for up to 15 min. Passive unipolar signals were obtained and analysed. Results Eleven patients (33–71 years; 6 females) undergoing colorectal surgery under general anaesthesia (4 with epidurals) were recruited. After artefact removal and comprehensive manual and automated analytics, events consistent with regular propagating activity between 2 and 6 cpm were not identified in any patient. Intermittent clusters of spike-like activities lasting 10–180 s with frequencies of each cluster ranging between 24 and 42 cpm, and an average amplitude of 0.54 ± 0.37 mV were recorded. Conclusions Intraoperative colonic serosal mapping in humans is feasible, but unlike in the stomach and small bowel, revealed no regular propagating electrical activity. Although sporadic, synchronous spike-wave events were identifiable. Alternative techniques are required to characterise the mechanisms underlying the hyperactive CMP observed in the intra- and post-operative period. New findings The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of detecting propagating electrical activity that may correlate to the cyclic motor pattern in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution, serosal electrical mapping. High-resolution electrical mapping of the human colon revealed no regular propagating activity, but does reveal sporadic spike-wave events. These findings indicate that further research into appropriate techniques is required to identify the mechanism of hyperactive cyclic motor pattern observed in the intra- and post-operative period in humans.

This work presents a novel microwave sensor that is specially designed for the retrieval of complex permittivity. The proposed sensor is designed to operate in the C band (4.54 GHz). By implementing a novel feeding structure, the proposed SIW cavity design improves the coupling and achieves a better quality factor. Several techniques are used to enhance sensitivity, including a Photonic Band Gap (PBG), corner cut, and slow-wave vias. These techniques increase the interaction between the material under test and the electric field. By utilizing slow-wave vias, 35% size reduction is achieved. Achieving simultaneous miniaturization and sensitivity enhancement in this study introduces a new possibility and application for sensor design. The values of complex permittivities are extracted from scattering parameters obtained from simulation of the structure in CST Microwave Studio (MWS) using a machine learning approaches. Our sensor has 0.8% sensitivity, which is better than that of other sensors. Moreover, the maximum error rate in our method is lower than other existing methods. This ratio for the proposed method is 2.31% while for curve fitting and analytical solutions are 26% and 16%, respectively.

In this paper, two types (i.e., type-A and type-B) of hybrid microstrip/defected ground structure (DGS) cells are proposed for passive circuit implementation with ultra-wide stopband. Both cells consist of the stepped-impedance DGS and embedded folded slotline on the ground, which could obtain the dual-resonances. In type-A cell, a microstrip T-stub on the top side is introduced, which can not only allocate a strong coupling to the DGS with slotline on the bottom side, but also act as the input/output port. To finely adjust the dual-resonances of the type-B cell, a grounded microstrip patch is used. Meanwhile, such compact cells could feature an ultra-wide upper stopband, due to their own slow-wave effect. Based on the aforementioned hybrid microstrip/DGS cells, two dual-band bandpass filters (BPFs) and a dual-band filtering power divider (FPD) are proposed and fabricated. Measured and simulated results are in a fairly-close agreement. Both dual-band BPFs exhibit the ultra-wide upper stopband, which extends up to 40 GHz with a high rejection level about 30 dB. Besides, the dual-band FPD has merits of more than 18.7 dB of in-band isolation and 28 dB stopband rejection levels up to 40 GHz.

In this paper we describe the design, theory, implementation, and measurement results of a novel frequency-scanned slow-wave slotted waveguide antenna. The slow-wave antenna is fabricated by periodically loading a standard WR22 waveguide using cylindrical posts. The antenna has a backward radiation and can steer the beam from -72° to -12° by changing the frequency from 32.5 GHz to 37.4 GHz. The gain of the antenna remains within a 3 dB range from the maximum gain of 17 dBi throughout the steering range. The antenna is 29λ in length and 0.69λ in width. The antenna radiation efficiency is between 74% and 92% throughout its frequency range which allows for further extension of its length in order to achieve a higher gain and a smaller beamwidth. Moreover, the small lateral width of the antenna allows placing several of them side-by-side to either narrow or facilitate scanning the beam in the transverse plane. The antenna has a fast and constant scanning rate of 4.3° over a 1% bandwidth and a return loss of less than -10 dB throughout its operating frequency range.

Gastric peristalsis is critically dependent on an underlying electrical conduction system. Recent years have witnessed substantial progress in clarifying the operations of this system, including its pacemaking units, its cellular architecture, and slow-wave propagation patterns. Advanced techniques have been developed for assessing its functions at high spatiotemporal resolutions. This review synthesizes and evaluates this progress, with a focus on human and translational physiology. A current conception of the initiation and conduction of slow-wave activity in the human stomach is provided first, followed by a detailed discussion of its organization at the cellular and tissue level. Particular emphasis is then given to how gastric electrical disorders may contribute to disease states. Gastric dysfunction continues to grow in their prevalence and impact, and while gastric dysrhythmia is established as a clear and pervasive feature in several major gastric disorders, its role in explaining pathophysiology and informing therapy is still emerging. New insights from high-resolution gastric mapping are evaluated, together with historical data from electrogastrography, and the physiological relevance of emerging biomarkers from body surface mapping such as retrograde propagating slow waves. Background: Cyclic motor patterns (CMP) are the predominant motor pattern in the distal colon, and are important in both health and disease. Their origin, mechanism and relation to bioelectrical slow-waves remain incompletely understood. During abdominal surgery, an increase in the CMP occurs in the distal colon. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of detecting propagating slow waves and spike waves in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution (HR), serosal electrical mapping.Methods: HR electrical recordings were obtained from the distal colon using validated flexible PCB arrays (6 × 16 electrodes; 4 mm inter-electrode spacing; 2.4 cm2, 0.3 mm diameter) for up to 15 min. Passive unipolar signals were obtained and analysed.Results: Eleven patients (33-71 years; 6 females) undergoing colorectal surgery under general anaesthesia (4 with epidurals) were recruited. After artefact removal and comprehensive manual and automated analytics, events consistent with regular propagating activity between 2 and 6 cpm were not identified in any patient. Intermittent clusters of spike-like activities lasting 10-180 s with frequencies of each cluster ranging between 24 and 42 cpm, and an average amplitude of 0.54 ± 0.37 mV were recorded.Conclusions: Intraoperative colonic serosal mapping in humans is feasible, but unlike in the stomach and small bowel, revealed no regular propagating electrical activity. Although sporadic, synchronous spike-wave events were identifiable. Alternative techniques are required to characterise the mechanisms underlying the hyperactive CMP observed in the intra- and post-operative period.New Findings: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of detecting propagating electrical activity that may correlate to the cyclic motor pattern in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution, serosal electrical mapping. High-resolution electrical mapping of the human colon revealed no regular propagating activity, but does reveal sporadic spike-wave events. These findings indicate that further research into appropriate techniques is required to identify the mechanism of hyperactive cyclic motor pattern observed in the intra- and post-operative period in humans. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairment in military and civilian populations. However, mild TBI (mTBI) can be difficult to detect using conventional MRI or CT. Injured brain tissues in mTBI patients generate abnormal slow-waves (1-4 Hz) that can be measured and localized by resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG). In this study, we develop a voxel-based whole-brain MEG slow-wave imaging approach for detecting abnormality in patients with mTBI on a single-subject basis. A normative database of resting-state MEG source magnitude images (1-4 Hz) from 79 healthy control subjects was established for all brain voxels. The high-resolution MEG source magnitude images were obtained by our recent Fast-VESTAL method. In 84 mTBI patients with persistent post-concussive symptoms (36 from blasts, and 48 from non-blast causes), our method detected abnormalities at the positive detection rates of 84.5%, 86.1%, and 83.3% for the combined (blast-induced plus with non-blast causes), blast, and non-blast mTBI groups, respectively. We found that prefrontal, posterior parietal, inferior temporal, hippocampus, and cerebella areas were particularly vulnerable to head trauma. The result also showed that MEG slow-wave generation in prefrontal areas positively correlated with personality change, trouble concentrating, affective lability, and depression symptoms. Discussion is provided regarding the neuronal mechanisms of MEG slow-wave generation due to deafferentation caused by axonal injury and/or blockages/limitations of cholinergic transmission in TBI. This study provides an effective way for using MEG slow-wave source imaging to localize affected areas and supports MEG as a tool for assisting the diagnosis of mTBI.

Study Objectives: In aging, reduced delta power (0.5-4 Hz) during N2 and N3 sleep has been associated with gray matter (GM) atrophy and hypometabolism within frontal regions. Some studies have also reported associations between N2 and N3 sleep delta power in specific sub-bands and amyloid pathology. Our objective was to better understand the relationships between spectral power in delta sub-bands during N2-N3 sleep and brain integrity using multimodal neuroimaging., Methods: In-home polysomnography was performed in 127 cognitively unimpaired older adults (mean age ± SD: 69.0 ± 3.8 years). N2-N3 sleep EEG power was calculated in delta (0.5-4 Hz), slow delta (0.5-1 Hz), and fast delta (1-4 Hz) frequency bands. Participants also underwent magnetic resonance imaging and Florbetapir-PET (early and late acquisitions) scans to assess GM volume, brain perfusion, and amyloid burden. Amyloid accumulation over ~21 months was also quantified., Results: Higher delta power was associated with higher GM volume mainly in fronto-cingular regions. Specifically, slow delta power was positively correlated with GM volume and perfusion in these regions, while the inverse association was observed with fast delta power. Delta power was neither associated with amyloid burden at baseline nor its accumulation over time, whatever the frequency band considered., Conclusions: Our results show that slow delta is particularly associated with preserved brain structure, and highlight the importance of analyzing delta power sub-bands to better understand the associations between delta power and brain integrity. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairment in military and civilian populations. However, mild (and some moderate) TBI can be difficult to diagnose because the injuries are often not detectable on conventional MRI or CT. Injured brain tissues in TBI patients generate abnormal low-frequency magnetic activity (ALFMA, peaked at 1-4 Hz) that can be measured and localized by magnetoencephalography (MEG). We developed a new automated MEG low-frequency source imaging method and applied this method in 45 mild TBI (23 from combat-related blasts, and 22 from non-blast causes) and 10 moderate TBI patients (non-blast causes). Seventeen of the patients with mild TBI from blasts had tertiary injuries resulting from the blast. The results show our method detected abnormalities at the rates of 87% for the mild TBI group (blast-induced plus non-blast causes) and 100% for the moderate group. Among the mild TBI patients, the rates of abnormalities were 96% and 77% for the blast and non-blast TBI groups, respectively. The spatial characteristics of abnormal slow-wave generation measured by Z scores in the mild blast TBI group significantly correlated with those in non-blast mild TBI group. Among 96 cortical regions, the likelihood of abnormal slow-wave generation was less in the mild TBI patients with blast than in the mild non-blast TBI patients, suggesting possible protective effects due to the military helmet and armor. Finally, the number of cortical regions that generated abnormal slow-waves correlated significantly with the total post-concussive symptom scores in TBI patients. This study provides a foundation for using MEG low-frequency source imaging to support the clinical diagnosis of TBI.

Microwave soil heating deactivates weed seeds; however, in many modern agricultural settings, weed seeds are mostly found in the top 1–2 cm of the soil profile. Until recently, microwave soil heating has been achieved using various antennas, which project the microwave energy deeply into the soil. The aim of this research was to develop new microwave applicators that provide shallow heating (less than 50 mm). This paper presents two applicator designs, one based on a comb slow-wave structure and the other on the frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) principle, which utilise evanescent microwave fields to restrict the depth of microwave heating. The background theory to their performance is presented, followed by experimental evidence of their constrained heating performance under different soil moisture scenarios. Experimental measurements of the heating performance of these applicators, in soils of varying moisture content, demonstrate that the evanescent microwave fields restrict the depth of heating, so that most of the energy is manifested in the top 50 mm of soil. The evanescent field decay rate for the FTIR applicator changes from 44.0 ± 0.7 m−1 to 30 ± 1.2 m−1 as the soil moisture changes from 32% to 174% (dry weight basis). This is higher than the evanescent field decay rate for the comb slow-wave applicator (17.6 ± 0.7 m−1 to 19.9 ± 1.5 m−1). The FTIR applicator has a wider and shallower heating pattern than the comb slow-wave applicator. Because of the double heating lobes of the FTIR applicator, the effective half temperature heating width is approximately 150 mm. This is wider than the half temperature heating width of the comb slow-wave applicator (95 mm).

Continuous scanning leaky‐wave antenna (LWA) based on second‐mode spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) excitation has been proposed and validated in this article. Different from the existing modulation methods, connecting axisymmetric rectangular modulation is adopted to excite the −first harmonic. In this way, the slow‐wave bound on the surface of the transmission line is converted into a radiation wave in space. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first presentation of LWA design utilizing second‐mode SSPPs excitation. In the range from 5.0 to 9.0 GHz, the proposed LWA realizes continuous scanning from −54° ~ 11° with a quasi‐omnidirectional beam in the vertical plane. A prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated and measured, and the measured results show good agreement with the simulated. A millimeter‐wave slow‐wave transmission line (T‐line) implemented with Si‐benzocyclobutene (Si‐BCB) technology is modeled in this paper. An artificial neural network (ANN) is applied to map the numerical relationship between the geometric parameters of the slow‐wave T‐line and its S‐parameters. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm and Gradient Descent Back‐Propagation optimization method are used during ANN training process. A 30‐GHz coupler based on the proposed slow‐wave structure is fabricated and measured. The ANN results, electromagnetic (EM)‐simulated results, and measured results are consistent with one another. Background The incidence of dementia has reached epidemic levels, both globally and here in Ireland. Many adults with dementia living in the community remain inactive with some also suffering from sleep disturbances. There is evidence to suggest sufficient exercise and sleep can have a positive influence on cognition also. In this study, we explore: physical activity levels sleep patterns, of community dwelling people with dementia and explore the association they have on: cognitive function quality of life. Methods Each individual was assigned a Withings-Go wrist-watch to wear over a period of 3 months which measured their: daily steps taken time in deep sleep time in light sleep. total sleep each night MMSE and DEM QoL were used to measure cognitive function and quality of life respectively. Assessed at: baseline & after 3 months. This data was coded and analysed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Results An RHO = 0.617 was detected between the DEMQoL scores and the mean steps taken over the last 5 days of data collection. An RHO = -0.127 was detected between steps and sleep time which implied that as steps increased, sleep time was reduced with the opposite being applicable also. The average total sleep time for the sample was 08:03:00 (hh:mm:ss) while the average daily steps taken by the group was 3,266 steps. Conclusion People with dementia living in the community were found to be physically inactive. This study has displayed that increased levels of physical activity can show signs of an improved self-perceived quality of life. This study was a correlational study and causality was not investigated. The association we have identified may provide support and foundation for future studies that explore causal components. In this paper, a miniaturized substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) band-pass cavity filter is presented. Miniaturization is achieved using the half-mode (HM) principle so the lateral dimension of the filter can be reduced by half. Moreover, the slow-wave (SW) technique is used to decrease the center frequency by more than 30 % . Combining these two techniques will reduce filter dimensions by more than 75 % in comparison with the original SIW. By using an electromagnetic (EM) solver the effect of each geometrical parameter on the filter performance is demonstrated. Measurements on the fabricated filter are in good agreement with the numerical results. Input return loss is better than 10 dB, insertion loss of the filter is lower than 2.5 dB across a bandwidth of 3.3 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
