This essay examines the interplay of form and content in early Islamic expressions of taqwā (translated variously as piety, or fear or consciousness of God), with a primary focus on prophetic hadith and the orations of ʿ⁠Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib. Through this analysis, two major observations can be made. First, expressions of taqwā in these sources are indelibly corporeal, articulated through forms of bodily intimacy, whether between rider and mount, or as the cure for bodily sickness. Second, attention to both form and content and their interstices elucidates a picture of taqwā that expands our notion of embodiment to encompass the realm of the internal. Taqwā involves techniques of the limbs, tongue, eyes, and ears as well as techniques of the heart. To demonstrate this, I explore both the ways that believers are enjoined to seek taqwā as well as how taqwā is articulated as enacting transformations in/on those believers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One cannot speak of the nineteenth-century Beirut Nahḍa and not mention Muʿallim Buṭrus al-Bustānī (1819–83). This article examines how al-Bustānī utilized the Arabic oratorical tradition and the innovative medium of print to create the Muʿallim brand. The first section analyses his Khuṭba fī Ādāb al-ʿArab (An Oration on the Culture of the Arabs, 1859) to illustrate how he operationalized the Arabic rhetorical style to position himself as an eloquent public intellectual. This article next discusses how he built parts of this lecture on sariqāt (literary thefts/legitimate borrowings) from his contemporaries and participated in the collective practice of knowledge production. Lastly, al-Bustānī's advertising tactics in print to promote his public persona are explored. This article demonstrates that al-Bustānī successfully established himself as the Muʿallim by coupling the enduring cultural power of Arabic oration with the modern might of print. This essay examines two understudied documents from eighteenth-century Lima: the 1715 and 1716 Oraciones delivered by Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo about his rectorship at San Marcos University. In their construction, both speeches capture colonial bureaucratism, transatlantic self-imagination, and baroque academicism at a mature stage in the development of colonial criollo identity. I examine these dynamics through the analysis of three rhetorical gestures: the use of classical panegyrists to establish critical similarities and differences between ancient academic institutions and San Marcos, the strategic manipulation of Latin citations, and the characterization of the history of San Marcos as a new yet deep archive. Through these strategies, I propose, Peralta suggests two different types of past: a "classical" antiquity rooted in Rome, and an "archival" antiquity that belongs to Lima. The coordination of these two pasts dramatizes the positioning of the criollo intellectual community in the transatlantic Republic of Letters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As 'inaugural Oration' the De ratione had the main objective of addressing the young scholars of the Neapolitan University, and to encourage them in cultivating modern knowledge and seeking unity. It meant to feed - among the Neapolitan jurists- the civil conscience that the phenomena of neo-feudalization had wanted differently oriented. The basic objective, however, remained the need for a gnoseological revolution and in order to do so, Vico took advantage of the reinterpretation of authors such as Plato and Augustine, Bacon, Descartes and Galileo. Extensively managed semi-natural grasslands represent species-rich habitats and therefore play a key role for the maintenance of biodiversity in agricultural areas. In marginal and poorly accessible areas, the traditional management of grassland is frequently abandoned, which leads to the spread of forest. In Southern Switzerland, terraced vineyards (a special grassland type) and terraced grasslands are part of the cultural heritage and local biodiversity hotspots. Yet, many of them are overgrown by forest. In the past years, several abandoned terraced vineyards and grasslands have been restored by removing the forest, rebuilding the walls and re-introducing the traditional management. We examined restoration success by assessing plant species richness, diversity and species composition in both the aboveground vegetation and soil seed bank in (1) restored, (2) abandoned for 25–50 years, and (3) permanently used areas of six terraced vineyards and six terraced grasslands. Plant species richness and diversity were reduced and species composition altered in the aboveground vegetation of abandoned vineyards and grasslands compared to the permanently used and restored ones. However, species richness, Shannon-diversity and species composition of the aboveground vegetation did not differ between restored and permanently used areas, indicating a successful restoration of the vegetation 10–15 years after restoration. In abandoned vineyards, species richness of plants emerging from the soil seed bank was slightly higher than in permanently used and restored vineyards. No difference in seedling species richness was found between abandoned, permanently used and restored terraced grasslands. Our results showed that the soil seed bank played a minor role for the re-establishment of the above-ground vegetation. We assume that the large species pool in the surroundings and the presence of dispersal vectors are essential for the successful passive restoration of abandoned grassland in this region. The science of political ideology of Byzantium occupies one of the most important places among the problems currently prevailing in Byzantine studies. If we want to properly interpret Manuel’s reign, it is not enough just to know the territorial scope and ethnic composition of Byzantium in the 14th and 15th centuries, but it is also necessary to analyze the imperial ideology. The best way to do this is to study the texts written by Manuel. In the works of the Emperor we can find letters to various friends, orations, dialogues, instructions, treatises on various topics related to state governance, the value of marriage, love for the homeland etc. All this written inheritance left by Manuel shows his exceptional erudition, patience, talent, education, and passion for the rhetoric he had and gives a new perspective of the problems of Byzantium in the 15th century. Through the example of the German language, the paper analyzes a special type of Catholic liturgical text – the Priestly Prayer during the Liturgy of Hours (oration) on the Feasts of the Doctors of the Church. The study views the prayer as a type of text and describes its socio cultural specificity. The present article analyzes the prayer on the Feasts of the Doctors of the Church for lexical grammatical models (addressings, predications, pleadings and conclusions) and the most typical compositional, grammatical, and lexical features and stylistic devices (intertextual borrowings, metaphors, metonymies, antithesis, and syntactic parallelism); and traces how they create the originality of this type of prayers.

The paper examines Christmas orations delivered by Gavrilo Stefanović Venclović to Komoran congregation from 1739 to 1743, the records of which are to be found in the anthology of orations, entitled Slova izbrana (1743). Particular attention has been paid to the thematic framework and to defining thematic layers, but in their correlation. In addition to that, the integral part of the analysis is identifying the Church Fathers' notional concepts as patterns to orations by Venclović.

In A Glossary of Contemporary Literary Theory, Jeremy Hawthorn refers to Cultural Materialism as an "umbrella term" that allows itself the opulence to utilise a wide range of tools and theories from many different disciplines. This allows us to justify the nature of both commonly acknowledged and abstruse socio-cultural episteme and discourse, one of the most prominent of which is the issue of power and power relations.This paper, which was originally part of a larger body of work on Cultural Materialism, tries to draw upon a few different theories to examine the confrontational relationship that exists between the two prominent characters of Shakespeare's (1953) Julius Caesar (namely Antony and Brutus), as represented by the duel-like orations of the two characters. The main goal of the paper is to demonstrate how Antony is able to manipulate the words of Brutus against him and thus succeed in captivating the crowd.The theoretical discussions drawn upon in this article will include Austin's (1999) ideas on language as action, Bourdieu's (1999) argument of dialogue as contest and Hutchby's (1999) findings on turn-taking strategies. This paper will also incorporate Paul Grice's Cooperative Principle, introduced in his "Logic and Conversation" (1999). This principle argues that the flouting of any of Grice's four maxims by the characters is meaningful and effective because it introduces an "implicature" in the political and social context in which the pieces of discourse take place.

Le Orazioni alla Vergine (The prayers to the Virgin) of Paolo Segneri. The cause for this essay was the finding of a devotional book of Paolo Segneri, printed in Naples in 1797. The author dwells upon the spiritual and theological life of the Jesuit scholar of the Christian doctrine, who was born in the Seventeenth Century. This book shows his eloquence ability, his engagement for the daily evangelization and his unexpected devotion to the Virgin Mary, for whom he wrote profound prayers, that have a theological and spiritual feature. During the 1630s Vincent de Paul promised Louise de Marillac that he “would send for the painter” who would create a pious image for the Daughters of Charity. The print, titled The Lord of Charity, was drawn by Charles Le Brun, engraved by Pierre Daret and printed in 1640 by Antoine Hérault, who was close to the noble women of the Vincentian congregation. It represents Christ standing on a cloud on which is inscribed “For Christ’s love compels us. Cor. 2, 5”. His presence is protecting the Daughters of Charity, who are placed in the background, tending to the sick in a hospital. Widely disseminated within the community and copied on many occasions by its members, the engraving was designed to spiritually educate the “country girls” who had committed themselves to Vincent de Paul as “servants of the poor”.

In the process of determining the place and importance of György Verestói (1698-1765; orator and reformed bishop of Transylvania) this study aims to formulate certainties by using the results of research history. The figure of the orator - despite his contemporary popularity - has nowadays faded. Most encyclopaedias contain mistaken information about Verestói and in the public consciousness of literary history there are lots of controversial facts about the topic. Moreover, his works are not separated; most databases, libraries merge his oeuvre with the younger Verestói's one. The most important result of this research is that - having found the original Latin manuscript of the author's autobiography -- it can reassuringly clear up the questions related to the biography. This research sought to examine the term "inclusion" in the old critical writings, employing the historical approach in tracing the term in its original sources. It also presented the terms which replaced its use in contexts, sources of the term, mechanisms of inclusion, as well as its advantages as being an artistic skill which plays an important role in building texts. The article presents an examination of three pamphlets produced by English author John Milton in the year 1649 including, "The Tenure," "Observations" and "Eikonoklastes." The author explores how these pamphlets combine elements that Milton favored during the 1640s, particularity oration and the animadversion, and explores how these elements are rooted in classical rhetorical theory and the Renaissance adaption of it. The author discusses how the structure, style and aesthetics of the pamphlets illustrate Milton's ability to utilized the rhetoric and poetic elements of classical and Renaissance rhetorical literature.
