ADULTS , *COVID-19 pandemic , *SELF-control , *INDEPENDENT variables , *TIME perception , *MULTIPLE regression analysis , *PSYCHOLOGICAL distress , *TIME perspective , *SELF regulation , *PERSONALITY - Abstract
Psychological time is an essential aspect of humans. Two of the most important notions of subjective temporality are time perspective and temporal focus. Time perspective is a process by which the flow of personal and social experiences are framed in five different temporal categories: past negative, past positive, present hedonistic, present fatalistic and future. Temporal focus refers to the attention people devote to thinking about the past, present, and future. Previous research shows there is a strong relation between psychological time and self-regulatory processes, specifically self-control and impulsivity. Self-control is the ability to inhibit impulsive behaviors or reactions that can keep the person from pursuing the proposed goals. On the other hand, impulsivity refers to a short attention span and a tendency to engage in risky behaviors, and to prefer immediate rewards. Both subjective temporality and self-regulatory processes influence behaviors and psychological states such as psychological distress. In particular, the objective of this study was to find out if subjective temporality --time perspective and temporal focus-- and self-control and impulsivity have repercussions on psychological distress, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, in an Argentinian sample. The theoretical conjecture is that subjective temporality is closely linked to self-regulation, which influences the development of impulsivity and self-control, and impacts psychological distress. A quantitative, non-experimental, and cross-sectional empirical study was carried out (N = 279; 78 % women; ME = 30.14 years old; SD = 11.21). Firstly, the results of the correlational analysis showed significant relations between the variables. Then, to facilitate further analyses, an index variable of self-control was created, which included the scores of self-control and three dimensions of impulsivity. An optimal parallel analysis was performed. It indicated the existence of a single dimension. Then a semi-confirmatory factor analysis was ran, which showed acceptable results (KMO = .68; X² (6) = 198.8, p < .001; GFI = .99; RMSR = 0.03). Thirdly, to determine the predictive variables of psychological distress, a multiple linear regression analysis was performed. It was found that 48 % of the variance of psychological distress was explained by negative past, self-control index, and future and present temporal focuses (F (4, 266) = 64.66, p < .001, R² = .49, R² adjusted = .48). The best predictor variable was past negative. Afterwards, a theoretical model was tested to explain the direct and indirect causes of psychological distress. It presented a good fit (X² /gl = 1.63; GFI = .99; RMSEA = .04). Time perspective and temporal focus explained 53 % of the variability of self-control and presented indirect effects on psychological distress through self-control. Self-control inversely influenced psychological distress; more self-control generates less psychological distress. The model explained half of the variance of psychological distress (R² = .50). The findings indicate that subjective temporality and self-control explain psychological states, even during a pandemic, which confirms previous studies that show the importance of personality variables --in addition to biological and contextual variables-- in the manifestation of psychological distress. The results support the theory that psychological time can be considered as a personality trait underlying self-control and psychological distress. A theoretical and practical discussion of the results is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: dietary intake has been shown to be one of the main factors influencing weight gain, and weight stigma contributes to increased emotional eating. However, the factors that mediate this relationship have been less studied. Objective: the aim of this study was to identify the relationship between weight stigma and emotional eating, and whether this relationship is mediated by internalizing weight bias and psychological distress. Methods: a non-probabilistic sample of 332 people from the general population (192 women and 140 men) answered self-report psychological instruments and provided anthropometric measurements. Results: through structural equation analysis (SEM), direct relationships were identified, among which the relationship between weight stigma and emotional eating stands out (β = 0.422, p<0.001), in addition to the indirect relationship between these variables mediated by internalized weight bias and psychological distress (βindirect = 0.016, p = < 0.05). The model had good indicators of goodness of fit and explained 85 % of the variance. Conclusion: the results show the importance of including psychological and behavioral variables in the treatment of emotional eating in people with overweight and obesity, as well as addressing these issues from public policies to reduce the associated stigma that still prevails in society.

There is growing evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the mental health and professional identity of nursing students. This study aimed to explore the trajectories of psychological distress and professional identity and examine their causal relationship among graduate nursing students. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted with 556 graduate nursing students in China who were asked to complete the Questionnaires for Emergent Events of Public Health and the Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nursing Students at three timepoints during the pandemic (T1 = onset of the outbreak, T2 = state-wide isolation, T3 = school reopening). The results showed that psychological distress and psychological identity changed over time, with the lowest psychological distress and highest professional identity at T3. The cross-lagged analysis showed that professional identity at T1 and T2 negatively predicted psychological distress at T2 and T3. We concluded that nurse educators should develop programs and strategies to cultivate professional identity in graduate nursing education to improve mental health during public health crises. RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *PSYCHOLOGICAL distress , *UKRAINIANS , *POST-traumatic stress disorder , *PSYCHOLOGICAL adaptation , *IMPACT of Event Scale - Abstract
Background: The 2022 War in Ukraine has significantly affected the psychological well-being and daily lives of people in many countries. Objective: Two aims of this transnational study were (1) to compare psychological distress and coping strategies among people living in Ukraine, Poland, and Taiwan, (2) to examine whether the associations between various coping strategies (ie. problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and avoidance) and psychological distress (ie. depression, anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and hopelessness about the ongoing war) differed among people of various countries during the initial stage of the 2022 War in Ukraine. Method: In total, 1,598 participants (362 from Ukraine, 1,051 from Poland, and 185 from Taiwan) were recruited using an online advertisement to complete online survey questionnaires, including the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced inventory; the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale; the Impact of Event Scale-Revised; and a questionnaire devised to assess the level of hopelessness about the ongoing war. Results: Psychological distress and adoption of coping strategies differed across people of various countries. Among Taiwanese and Polish respondents, avoidant coping strategies were most strongly associated with all categories of psychological distress compared with problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies. However, the associations of various coping strategies with psychological distress differed to a less extent among Ukrainian respondents. In addition, problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies had comparable associations with psychological distress among the people of Ukraine, Poland, and Taiwan. Conclusions: The 2022 War in Ukraine has affected the psychological well-being of people, especially the Ukrainians. Because of the strong association between the adoption of avoidance coping strategies and psychological distress, despite a less extent among Ukrainian respondents, adaptive coping strategies such as (problem- and emotion-focused) are suggested to help people during times of war. The 2022 War in Ukraine affected the psychological well-being in Ukraine and elsewhere. Compared with problem- and emotion-focused coping strategies, avoidant coping strategies had stronger association with psychological distress, but it varied among different cultures. - Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to relate life satisfaction and psychological distress to coping with the perception of criminal danger in university students. Method: Three scales were used: The Life Satisfaction Scale, the K-10 Psychological Distress Scale, and the Coping with Perceived Danger Scale. A total of 370 university students participated, of whom 65.4% were female, and 13.8% had experienced crime in the previous two years. Result: A positive and statistically significant relationship was found between coping with perceived danger, such as cautious avoidance (r=0.274, p ≤ 0.00), preventive coping (r=0.344, p ≤ 0.00), and extreme avoidance (r=0.207, p ≤ 0.00), with psychological distress. These relationships were even stronger for victims of crime. Women show higher levels of psychological distress and more cautious, avoidant and extreme coping strategies in the face of danger compared to men. Finally, a negative and significant relationship was observed between psychological distress and life satisfaction. Conclusion: It appears that regardless of whether a person has been a victim of crime in the last two years, perceptions of danger and strategies of cautious and even extreme crime prevention are related. Introduction: Psychological distress due to the context of the COVID-19 pandemic has become very common, especially in health care workers, who have been one of the most affected populations. Objective: To determine the socio-occupational factors associated with psychological distress in health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Peruvian highlands. Methods: Cross-sectional design study, where 3 previously validated scales measuring psychological distress, fear of being infected with COVID-19 and workload were applied (alpha values: 0.79, 0.91 and 0.83, respectively). These were added to other socio-occupational variables; descriptive and analytical statistics were obtained. Results: When multivariate analysis was performed, it was found that those who had a higher score of fear of contagion by COVID-19 (RPa: 1.45; IC95%: 1.12-1.87; valor p= 0.005) and those who had a higher perception of work overload (RPa: 1.45; IC95%: 1.12-1.87; valor p= 0.005) were those who had greater perception of psychological distress, moreover, compared to physicians, psychologists had more psychological distress (RPa: 2.73; IC95%: 1.67-4.46; valor p< 0.001). Conclusion: Significant associations were found, with the predominant finding being that there is a strong association between psychological distress and fear of possible infection with COVID-19, as well as with the perception of work overload, mainly in professional psychologists.

Objectives: Describe, compare and identify the relationship among perceived stress, coping strategies and emotional regulation, the impact of confinement, psychological distress, hopelessness, and suicidality. Method: Online administration of the PSS, COPE, ERQ, IES-R, SCL-90-R, BHS, and Okasha Suicide Scale questionnaires to 35 adults in addiction treatment, 24 men (68.67%) and 11 women (31.43%), aged 24 to 61 years (mean = 42.8; SD = 10.1) selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Results: There are high scores in the strategies aimed at emotional regulation, average scores in passive coping strategies and hopelessness, and low scores in the other variables. There are differences by gender, educational level, group of cohabitants, and type of treatment resource. The first multivariate model includes a positive association of perceived stress with anxiety and treatment in the detoxification unit, and a negative association with phobic anxiety. The second model includes positive associations of the impact of the event with planning, abandonment of efforts, personal growth and hopelessness, and negative relationship with positive reinterpretation. Conclusions: Although confinement has increased addictive behaviors worldwide, receiving psychotherapeutic support is a protective factor in mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carers of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience stressful situations as a result of performing their role as caregivers. This can have a negative outcome on their quality of life. A greater understanding of the relationship between the variables assessed in caregivers can be important in implementing effective intervention programs. The aim of this study was to explore the personality and coping strategies used by family caregivers of people with PD, analyzing their relationship with psychological distress and the carer involvement. A cross-sectional study based on a sample of 106 caregivers of people with Parkinson's disease tested the hypothesis that personality and coping strategies can contribute to identifying differences in carer involvement and psychological distress. Caregiver psychological distress was assessed using the CORE-OM questionnaire. The CORE-OM is able to distinguish the population within the clinical and non-clinical range. NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEOFFI) was used to assess personality. Coping strategies were evaluated with the COPE-28 inventory. An operational measure of the carer involvement was also used. For this purpose, an adaptation of the Katz index assessing basic functional capacity was made. Results: First, all cases were clustered according to personality variables and coping strategies. A K-means cluster analysis was performed and two groups were requested. After this, binary logistic regression analysis was used to test the research hypothesis. The resulting clusters in the above analysis were selected as predictors. Two analyses were performed. In the first, the dependent variable in logistic regression analysis was the psychological distress of the caregivers (dichotomized variable: clinical and non-clinical). Results showed that people clustered within cluster 1 had a 9.250 times higher risk of psychological distress than those included in cluster 2 (OR = 9.250; p < .001). In a second logistic regression analysis, the dependent variable was participation in care (dichotomized variable: low - high carer involvement). The group of people belonging to cluster 1 showed a carer involvement 4.125 times lower than the people grouped in cluster 2 (OR = 4.125; p < .001). The results of this research suggest the existence of a relationship between psychological variables and carer involvement, showing two different styles of care, which are described based on the personality and coping strategies of the family caregivers. In addition, we found that these styles of care show clear differences in efficiency, reflected in greater carer involvement and a lower psychological distress. The results reported that the cluster of people with below-average scores on neuroticism and above-average scores on the other personality factors (extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and coping strategies (planning; active coping; emotional support; social support; positive re-evaluation and acceptance) were associated with increased carer involvement and reduced risk of psychological distress. It has already been suggested that high scores in neuroticism may affect the need to take on a large number of care-related tasks or manage stressful situations in people with PD (Tew et al., 2013). However, our results indicate that the definition of different types of caregivers, where other care-related variables are also included, can help define more efficient styles of care. This is associated with increased carer involvement and minor psychological distress. We propose that in the future these variables be investigated in order to know the outcome of carer involvement and psychological distress, contributing to the description of more efficient care styles in family caregivers. Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the perceived stress, coping strategies, emotional regulation, impact of the event, and psychological distress during quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic in the Colombian population. Method: Non-probabilistic sample made up of 356 adults who answered an online questionnaire. Results: It was found medium and high scores in active coping strategies and emotional regulation, and low scores in stress, psychological distress and impact of quarantine. The 38.76 % presented scores that indicate risk of post-traumatic stress disorder. Women, people under 35 years of age, high school graduates, students, and living alone during the quarantine showed higher affectation. Statistically significant correlations of stress with all variables except with social support and cohabitants during quarantine were found. Finally, it was found a positive association of stress with venting, expressive suppression, the impact of quarantine, and psychological distress, and negative association with planning, acceptance, cognitive reappraisal, and age over 25 years. Conclusions: These results contribute to understanding responses to quarantine and to identify vulnerability factors to design prevention and intervention programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-stigma refers to the internalisation of negative societal views and stereotypes. Self-stigma has been well-characterised in the context of mental disorders such as schizophrenia but has received little attention in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This work aimed to determine the prevalence of self-stigma in a sample of adults with PTSD and to establish factors associated with the internalisation of stigma in this population. Participants were 194 adults (mean age 46.07 (SD = 12.39); 64.4% female; 96.6% white Caucasian; residing in the UK), who self-reported a diagnosis of PTSD and currently screened positive for the disorder according to the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Structured interviews and validated self-report questionnaires were used to ascertain clinical and sociodemographic information for analysis. The prevalence of self-stigma measured by the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale (ISMIS) was 41.2% (95% CI 34.24–48.22). There was no evidence of an association between self-stigma and gender (β = −2.975 (95% CI −7.046–1.097) p =.151), age (β = 0.007 (95% CI −0.152–0.165) p =.953), sexual trauma (β = 0.904 (95% CI −3.668–5.476) p =.697), military trauma (β = −0.571 (95% CI −4.027–7.287) p =.571). Self-stigma was associated with lower income and higher levels of anxiety (β = 5.722 (95% CI 2.922–8.522) p = <.001), depression (β = 6.937 (95% CI 4.287–9.588) p = <.000), and traumatic stress symptoms (β = 3.880 (95% CI 1.401–6.359) p =.002). The results indicate that self-stigma may be a significant issue among people with a diagnosis of PTSD. Further work is needed to understand the long-term impact and to develop interventions to address the internalisation of stigma in this population. The prevalence of self-stigma among a sample of participants with PTSD was 41.2%. There was no evidence of an association between self-stigma and gender, age or sexual / military trauma. Self-stigma was associated with lower income and higher levels of anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The statement of the global pandemic situation due to COVID in 2020 led to the implementation of measures to confine the population and limit social contact, bringing with it economic and employment insecurity, which makes it a highly stressful event. These produce psychological distress encourage individuals to deploy coping strategies to overcome the effects. A field study was designed to find out the psychological distress caused by strict confinement and what coping responses triggered individuals to face this event and, through them, evaluate the effectiveness of coping exercised. To do this, a community sample with 338 participants who responded to a measure of psychological distress and another of coping with confinement was evaluated. The results showed a rate of moderate and clinical deteriorate cases (.834) significantly higher than expected, with an increase in the rate of cases due to the pandemic of 88.0 %. In relation to the coping responses, the results revealed an increase in the use of avoidance strategies, decreasing confidence (-64.5 %) in approximate strategies for coping with confinement due to the pandemic. In addition, coping with confinement due to pandemic increased the use of cognitive and behavioral strategies. Regarding the rate of use of the strategies, a significant frequency of employment was observed in all of them, the Emotional discharge strategy being significantly the most activated. The efficacy of the strategies deployed by the population to cope with confinement due to pandemic, characterized as maladaptive, passive, avoidant and focused on emotions, and the implications for the design of empowerment programs are discussed. Introduction. COVID-19 is an infectious disease that has affected millions of people worldwide, Spain being one of the countries most affected by the pandemic. It is key to study its impact on the mental health of the Spanish population during the lockdown situation. The aim is to analyse maladaptive responses in each autonomous community during the first two weeks after the state of emergency was declared in Spain. Material and Methods. Through an online questionnaire, clinical and sociodemographic information was collected from participants between 19 and 26 March 2020. The DASS-21 and the IES questionnaires were used to evaluate the maladaptive psychological responses. Results. A total of 21,152 people completed the questionnaire. Mean age was 39.75 (SD 14.039), and 69.6% were women. Most of the participants lived in Asturias (36.2%) and Cantabria (11.9%). In the sample as a whole, among the maladaptive responses, depressive symptoms represented the highest percentage (46.7%), followed by stress (33.2%) and anxiety (10.7%) symptoms. The results of the DASS-21 revealed that a higher proportion of the people from Andalusia [n = 1979 (9.3%))]were affected in all three domains: depressive (59.7%), stress (41.7 %), and anxiety (16.2%) symptoms, Castilla La Mancha had the highest percentage of intrusive response (31.2%), while Andalusia had the highest percentage of avoidance behaviour (55.7%). Conclusions. Almost half of the sample showed maladaptive reactions, depressive symptoms and avoidance behaviour being the most common responses. Repercussions on mental health during and after large-scale traumatic events should be addressed carefully to minimize maladaptive responses in the general population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high prevalence and incidence of problems related to anxiety in the population have made it one of the main indicators of psychological ill-being (Guillén-Riquelme Buela-Casal, 2011). Numerous researchers are studying its treatment by the use of therapeutic techniques of third generation based on mindfulness because it has become a practice of ascending use in the clinical exercise and the development of psychological health (Ford, Lam, John, Mauss, 2017). The evidences in this regard show that there could be a tendency to publish only those investigations that report positive effects, which could be causing an exaggeration of reality (Coronado-Montoya et al., 2016). The present research has two objectives: (1) know the statistical relationship between the factors of Mindfulness (Observation, Description, Acting with awarenesse, Non-judging, and Non-reactivity) and anxiety (state and trait); and (2) check the explanatory capacity of these factors on both types of anxiety. A sample of 53 undergraduated students (third and fourth degree) from the University of Cádiz was used. They voluntarily completed the following questionnaires: Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (Aguado et al., 2015) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (Buela-Casal, Guillén- Riquelme, Seidedos, 2011). The bivariate correlation analysis performed showed that only the Non judging, Acting with awareness and Non-reactivity factors, correlated negatively and statistically significant with both types of anxiety. These factors were able to explain the change in the variance of state anxiety in 57.8% (R2 = .578), and in 62.7% in trait anxiety (R2 = .627). The factors Non judging (Beta = -.508) and Acting with awareness (Beta = -.346), were statistically significant when explaining levels of trait anxiety. However, only Non judging (Beta = -.693) remained as significant factor in anxiety state. In conclusion, the promotion of accepting nonevaluative attitude before the internal experience would seek an improvement in the levels of both types of anxiety and, in addition, paying full attention to the activities during its realization would suppose a decrease in the trait anxiety.

Introduction: COVID-19, a respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. It has affected millions of people and represents an unprecedented threat not only to health, but also to the economy and educational processes. In the confinement, one of the vulnerable groups is that of students of various academic degrees. The objective was to describe the manifestations of psychological discomfort and health derived from the confinement measures in students of a private university in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. A secondary objective, due to the inclusion criteria, was to evaluate the differences between undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the associated factors in social coexistence, vulnerable groups and health measures. Method: The participants were 641 students who were administered an online survey with a response rate of 77.6%. The participants were 63.1% women and 36.9% men. A total of 60.8% were undergraduate students and 39.2% graduate students. The mean age was 25.3 years. The instrument of measurement consists of 24 items, integrating Kessler's K-6 scale, with 6 specific questions on psychological distress referring to symptoms of anxiety and depression in the last month. Four questions on health aspects regarding COVID-19, 8 on healthy distance measures, and 6 on coexistence and habits at home were included. An odds ratio analysis was performed to identify the associated risk of health and coexistence with respect to psychological distress. At each stage, the ethical principles for the research were complied with and the dignity of the participants was respected, as well as the lawful treatment of personal information based on the principles of the current regulatory framework. Results: The 92.6% lived in confinement with family, and the remainder alone or with friends. The 96.2% indicated not having symptoms of COVID. The 44.7% did not have a daily routine, 27.4% went out daily in confinement and 48.3% presented moderate to high and very high levels of psychological distress. A higher risk of presenting psychological distress was identified in women, postgraduate students, belonging to the health and humanities areas, presenting obesity and concern about being infected, not following sanitary measures and presenting any physical discomfort (ORs ranging from 2.05 to 7.02). Discussion and conclusion: As in other populations, the monitoring of confinement measures is not uniform and there is a high proportion of psychological distress in undergraduate and graduate students. It is suggested to serve the population with higher risk with a comprehensive care model that incorporates the educational process, social coexistence and emotional management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A brief version of the Zimbardo Temporary Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) for Buenos Aires is presented. It was constructed from the Argentine adaptation of 56 items which was answered by 343 people along with the scale of Psychological Distress and Self-control. From a classic parallel analysis and an exploratory factor analysis, the original five-factor factor structure was verified and a short version of the ZTPI (ZTPI-B) of 29 items was achieved. In a second study 272 people completed the ZTPI-B and the same external measures. The semi confirmatory factor analysis showed a very good adjustment of the model while external validity analyzes showed significant associations between negative past, fatalistic present and psychological distress and future and self-control. The results indicate satisfactory evidence of internal consistency and validity of criteria and content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of racial experiences on Whites has been underresearched and has rarely been considered traumatic. To understand these experiences, it is important to consider variation in one's orientation to their racial group (i.e., racial identity) and the type of racial encounter. Using a White adult sample and hierarchical cluster analysis, the authors found that reactions to race‐based encounters were associated with varying levels of psychological distress and well‐being and racial identity statuses. Clinical implications are discussed.
