This literature review was compiled according to the data of search engines PubMed, eLIBRARY.RU, Google Scholar using key words influenza, cytokines, children. The article highlights the participation of pro-inflammatory and antiinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of influenza, compares the cytokine profile in different strains of the virus, with concomitant pathology, as well as attempts to find an answer to the question: “Why are young children more susceptible to this infection?” The article contains information about the creation of express systems for diagnosing cytokine storm in patients with influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections, taking into account a complex of clinical and laboratory data that comes to the aid of a practicing physician. It should be noted that there are different opinions among authors regarding the early markers of severe and complicated influenza in childhood. This information makes the topic of studying the significance of cytokines in influenza in children relevant, but it requires continuation and clarification of knowledge on this issue.

In Japan, inactivated influenza vaccines are used. We measured titers of antibodies to vaccine strains of three influenza types—influenza A (H1N1), influenza A (H3N2), and influenza B/Victoria—from the 2017/2018 to 2021/2022 seasons, but not for influenza A (H3N2) from the 2018/2019 season, using a single set of serum samples from 34 healthy volunteers, and assessed the consistency in antibody positivity between seasons. The antibody titers in the 2017/2018 season were used as a reference. The influenza A (H1N1) antibody titer in 2019/2020 did not differ significantly from that in the 2017/2018 season, but the titers varied in the two subsequent seasons. The influenza A (H3N2) antibody titers toward the 2019/2020, 2020/2021, and 2021/2022 seasonal viruses differed significantly from that in the 2017/2018 season. The influenza B/Victoria antibody titer toward the 2019/2020 seasonal antigen differed from that in the 2017/2018 season, and the antibody positivity was inconsistent between seasons; however, the antibody titer in the 2020/2021 season did not differ significantly from those in the prior two seasons, and the antibody positivity was consistent between seasons. Background: Rhabdomyolysis with influenza infection is rarely reported in adults. We report here influenza A induced rhabdomyolysis and anterior compartment syndrome (ACS). Case report: This case report describes a 43-year-old woman exhibiting influenza A induced rhabdomyolysis. High levels of creatine kinase (97,000 IU/L) and high titer of anti-influenza A virus antibody (H3N2) (320×) with negative anti-influenza B virus antibody were observed. T2 fat suppression muscle MRI imaging showed high-intensity signals in rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, adductor magnus, and semimembranosus (SM) muscles. The existence of ACS was suspected out. Muscle biopsy showed that fiber size variations exist without infiltration of inflammatory cells. The symptoms and muscle MRI findings of T2 fat suppression imaging was markedly improved. Conclusions: Muscle MRI T2 fat suppression imaging is a useful method to monitor influenza A induced rhabdomyolysis. We should keep in mind the possibilities of rhabdomyolysis and ACS in patients with influenza A infection presenting serious muscle pain.

Background: Influenza A (H3N2) clade 3C.3a was the predominant influenza virus in Israel throughout the 2018-2019 season, constituting a drift from the influenza A (H3N2) vaccine. We estimated the end-of season vaccine effectiveness (VE) by age, among community patients with influenza-like illness (ILI), considering the hemagglutinin (HA) gene mutations and amino acid substitutions of influenza A (H3N2) viruses detected. Methods: Nose-throat samples were analyzed for the presence of influenza virus, type/subtype, and HA gene sequence. HA gene sequences and amino acid substitutions were compared to the influenza A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016 (H3N2)-like 2018-2019 vaccine virus, and a phylogenetic tree was generated. Influenza VE against influenza A (H3N2) was estimated using the test-negative design. VE was estimated by age group and by 15 year moving age intervals. Results: In total, 90% of the influenza A (H3N2) viruses belonged to the 3C.3a clade, constituting a unique situation in the northern hemisphere. Adjusted all-age influenza A (H3N2) VE was −3.5% (95% CI: −51.2 to 29.1). Although adjusted VEs were very low among infants, children, and young adults, a VE of 45% (95% CI: −19.2 to 74.6) was estimated among adults aged ≥45 years old. Conclusions: The higher VE point estimates among older adults may be related to previous exposure to similar influenza viruses.

It is important to characterize the clinical and epidemiological pattern of the influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus and compare it with influenza A (H3N2) virus, as surveyed in just a few studies, in order to contribute to the implementation and strengthening of influenza control and prevention strategies. The aims in this study were to describe influenza clinical and epidemiological characteristics in hospitalized patients, caused by influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 and influenza A (H3N2) viruses during 2013, in Santa Fe, Argentina. A retrospective study was conducted over 2013 among hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza diagnosis. In contrast to patients with influenza A (H3N2) (20.5%), a higher proportion of hospitalizations associated with influenza H1N1pdm were reported among adults aged 35-65 years (42.8%). Of all patients, 73.6% had an underlying medical condition. Hospitalized patients with H1N1pdm were subject to 2.6 (95%CI, 1.0-6.8) times higher risk of severity, than those hospitalized with influenza A (H3N2). This results demonstrate the impact in the post-pandemic era of H1N1pdm virus, with increased risk of severe disease, in relation to H3N2 virus, both viruses co-circulating during 2013. Background. The 2014-2015 influenza season was severe, with circulating influenza A (H3N2) viruses that were antigenically drifted from the vaccine virus. Reported vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates from ambulatory care settings were markedly decreased. Methods. Adults, hospitalized at 2 hospitals in southeast Michigan for acute respiratory illnesses, defined by admission diagnoses, of ≤10 days duration were prospectively enrolled. Throat and nasal swab specimens were collected, combined, and tested for influenza by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. VE was estimated by comparing the vaccination status of those testing positive for influenza with those testing negative in logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, hospital, calendar time, time from illness onset to specimen collection, frailty score, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI). Results. Among 624 patients included in the analysis, 421 (68%) were vaccinated, 337 (54%) were female, 220 (35%) were age ≥65 years, and 92% had CCI > 0, indicating ≥1 comorbid conditions. Ninety-eight (16%) patients tested positive for influenza A (H3N2); among 60 (61%) A (H3N2) viruses tested by pyrosequencing, 53 (88%) belonged to the drifted 3C.2a genetic group. Adjusted VE was 43% (95% confidence interval [CI], 4–67) against influenza A (H3N2); 40% (95% CI, -13 to 68) for those <65 years, and 48% (95% CI, -33 to 80) for those ≥65 years. Sensitivity analyses largely supported these estimates. Conclusions. VE estimates appeared higher than reports from similar studies in ambulatory care settings, suggesting that the 2014-2015 vaccine may have been more effective in preventing severe illness requiring hospitalization. Abstract: Most of the recently circulating H3N2 influenza A strains do not replicate well in embryonated chicken eggs and had to be isolated by cell culture, which presents a great challenge for influenza vaccine production using embryonated chicken eggs. We previously reported that a human H3N2 virus, A/Fujian/411/02, which replicates poorly in eggs, could be improved by changing a minimum of two HA residues (G186V/V226I or H183L/V226A). Here, we extended our work to the A/Singapore/21/04 strain that was also unable to grow in eggs. We showed that a single amino acid substitution of either G186V or A196T in the HA resulted in significantly increased virus replication in eggs without affecting virus antigenicity.
