Artisanal fishing is a socioeconomic activity that values the presence of the fisherman, and that underestimates the role of women. However, fisherwomen have a relevant role in different stages of the production chain, such as fishing, processing and commercialization of fish. This study characterizes the performance of women in artisanal fishing, as a way of identifying their main actions, based on a systematic review. The review was performed on the Science Direct platform, using four-word combinations. A time frame was not adopted in the research, so all articles found were included in the sample for applying the criteria and inclusion and exclusion, until the year 2020. A total of 52 articles were analyzed, with the highest publication rate for Brazil, India and Tanzania. The analysis of the abstracts identified five major classes of words, namely (i) Work and Income; (ii) Performance of women in fishing communities; (iii) Role of women in fisheries management; (iv) Fishing in mangroves and estuaries, and (v) Protected areas and artisanal fishing. Similarity analysis showed three main links, the first being about fisheries resources and communities, the second about women in artisanal fisheries, and the third about fisheries management. However, in view of the species described in the articles, the fisherwomen work in the production chain of 40 species, mainly from the phylum Mollusca with bivalves. Women fishermen have a wide participation in artisanal fishing; however, their performance is not always recognized, resulting in cases of invisibilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents reflections from the artisanal fishing management process in the Tarapoto wetlands, located in Puerto Nariño, Amazonas. It is highlights the importance of the role of artisanal fisheries in the context of food sovereignty and food security for the indigenous peoples, who inhabit the Tikuna, Cocama, Yagua Indigenous Reserve in the municipality of Puerto Nariño. It is recognized that the fishing management process that the communities have been leading within their territory for thirty years now, more than being a process for environmental management of fishing resources, constitutes a collective and social resistance process aimed to improve the governance of their territory, as well as to keep alive the knowledge and traditions associated to artisanal fishing as an element of identity for riverside populations.

FISH growth , *SEX ratio , *BIOLOGY , *FISHERY management , *FRESHWATER fishes , *FISHERIES - Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the parameters of the reproductive biology of seven commercial species at the Ramsar Site of the Baixada Maranhense to support fisheries management measures. The collections were carried out between 2012 and 2016. The reproductive period, sex ratio, weightlength relationship and first sexual maturity were evaluated for seven species of commercial importance. The sex ratio showed that females are predominant for all species, except for Plagioscion squamossissimus. The weight-length relationship indicated a greater investment in weight for Cichla monoculus and Hassar affinis, and a greater investment in length for Hoplias malabaricus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Prochilodus lacustris, Pygocentrus nattereri, and Schizodon dissimilis. The reproductive activity of the species was predominant in the rainy season, but C. monoculus, H. malabaricus and P. lacustris showed the ability to reproduce in both seasons. As management measures for the region, it is suggested a change in the closed fishing season established by IBAMA, from December 1 to April 30, to ensure the protection of all commercial species in this study. ABSTRACT Ariids such as Genidens genidens are particularly susceptible to overfishing because of their complex reproductive mechanisms, which result in slow replenishment of stocks. In this study, we obtained data about the reproductive ecology of the catfish G. genidens in the Guanabara Bay estuary, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, providing supporting information for management of its fishery. The sex ratio, mean size of each sex at first sexual maturation, and female fecundity were determined and the reproductive period was characterized. The males:females ratio was 1:2. The fecundity is low and increases proportionally to the females’ growth in total length and weight. The breeding season occurs during the warmest months of the year, with spawning extending from October through March and incubation from December through April. Sexual maturation is late, with males maturing at a larger size than females. Skipping spawning was also identified in females. Based on the reproductive biology, it is suggested that the catch be restricted to individuals larger than 20 cm, considering the L75 of the males, and that fishing be prohibited from December through March, to include the main period of spawning season by females and oropharyngeal incubation by males.

- Abstract
Aiming to contribute to the management of artisanal fisheries, the legal aspects of the activity in the city of Penha, SC, were evaluated, with emphasis on the seabob-shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). A total of 36 standards that regulate this activity were identified, many of which are ineffective. Changing the closed season is the main claim of fishermen; it was also observed that the majority of the workers who receive the insurance are not entitled to the benefit as they are involved in the preparation of the fish.

This study addresses the issues related to the catfish fishing ban in the estuary of Patos Lagoon/RS. Considered to be of great importance to artisanal fishers, the catfish were included in the list of endangered species, therefore a fishing ban was implemented. Such measure has as its background a fisheries management that reverberates unfairly on the artisanal fishers, whose traditional and social reproduction are also threatened. The present research is based on the debate about environmental justice, and analyses the current fisheries management mechanisms, in Brazil and in the estuary of Patos Lagoon, to then assess how the state centralized decision of the catfish fishing ban ignores the tradition of artisanal fisheries, denies the fishers’ rights, increasing their vulnerability. The research procedures involved: i) Literature review; II) Document analysis; III) Semi-structured interviews conducted between July and August 2016; IV) Observatory research. The main results make explicit that the artisanal fishers are characterized as traditional communities, and the importance of the catfish associated with the failure in capturing other species. It was found that when the list was drawn the fishers were not consulted, and therefore the existing advances in local fisheries management were not considered. The ban has imposed limitations on the social reproduction of artisanal fishers, given the multi-specificity of their fisheries in which the capture of catfish is associated with other species. In this scenario, considering the capture of catfish in the various artisanal fisheries, the catfish fishing ban precludes the fishers from their own existence. The absence of dialogue on the part of decision makers, paired with the inefficiency of the fisheries management mechanisms and environmental regulation, hold the fishers responsible for the environmental damage, disregarding their dependency of the same environment. In this scenario, it is necessary to overcome the dichotomy society-environment, commonly placed as a guiding element of fisheries management in Brazil.

The common pandora, Pagellus erythrinus, is a commercially important seabream for coastal fisheries in the north and central eastern Atlantic. Age, growth and reproductive aspects of the southern Portuguese population were estimated by analysing 386 specimens ranging in total length (TL) from 12.0 to 44.8 cm. Ages were estimated by counting growth bands on otoliths and verified by marginal increment analysis, with specimens ranging in age from 1 to 21 years. The von Bertalanffy growth function was selected as the most adequate model to fit this species' growth, with the estimated parameters being Linf = 47.14 cm TL, k = 0.084 year-1 and t0 = -4.42 year. The gonads were analyzed macroscopically over a one-year period and the reproductive spawning season found to occur from March to July. The length at first maturity for males occurs at 17.58 cm TL and 1.15 years while females mature at slightly smaller sizes (17.29 cm TL) and younger ages (1.04 years). The results presented in this study are important for comparing this population's parameters with those of other populations of the same species occurring in other areas, as well as for future studies, for assessing eventual changes in population parameters over time.

ALOSA , *SHAD , *CLUPEIDAE , *FISHERIES , *FISHERY management - Abstract
The allis shad, Alosa alosa (Linnaeus, 1758) and twaite shad, Alosa fallax (Lacépède, 1803), are two anadromous clupeids which represent an important inland fisheries resource in Portugal. In the past decades strong declines of the shad's landings were observed, even though some shad populations have recovered in the latest years. Yet, available information about this fisheries resource is still scarce, hampering adequate fisheries management measures. Here we present current data on shad's fisheries from Aldeia das Caneiras (Santarém) fishermen community of the largest Iberian river (Tagus River) between March and May of 2014. Most of the daily catches belong to these clupeids (36.4% for allis shad and 21.0% for twaite shad), while secondary species were the Iberian barbel (Luciobarbus bocagei) with 23.5%, sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and mullets. The price of shads ranged from 10 € per Kilogram, at the fishermen, to up to 20 € per Kilogram at the local market. Data on both species size-age structure, sex and maturity stage are presented along the 2014 fishing season. Fisheries management in this region must be done, allowing a better understand the population trends of both species and evaluation the fishing pressure. This information could be better used to implement sustainable fisheries compatible with local "Avieira" culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
