The research field of two dimensional (2D) materials strongly relies on optical microscopy characterization tools to identify atomically thin materials and to determine their number of layers. Moreover, optical microscopy-based techniques opened the door to study the optical properties of these nanomaterials. We presented a comprehensive study of the differential reflectance spectra of 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, with thickness ranging from one layer up to six layers. We analyzed the thickness-dependent energy of the different excitonic features, indicating the change in the band structure of the different TMDC materials with the number of layers. Large spin-orbit coupling in combination with circular dichroism allows access to spinpolarized and valley-polarized states in a controlled way in transition metal dichalcogenides. The promising application in spin-valleytronics devices requires a thorough understanding of intervalley coupling mechanisms, which determine the lifetime of spin and valley polarizations. Here we present a joint theory-experiment study shedding light on the Dexter-like intervalley coupling. We reveal that this mechanism couples A and B excitonic states in different valleys, giving rise to an efficient intervalley transfer of coherent exciton populations. We demonstrate that the valley polarization vanishes and is even inverted for A excitons, when the B exciton is resonantly excited and vice versa. Our theoretical findings are supported by energy-resolved and valley-resolved pump-probe experiments and also provide an explanation for the recently measured up-conversion in photoluminescence. Bound electron-hole pairs called excitons govern the electronic and optical response of many organic and inorganic semiconductors. Excitons with spatially displaced wave functions of electrons and holes (interlayer excitons) are important for Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity, dissipationless current flow, and the light-induced exciton spin Hall effect. Here we report on the discovery of interlayer excitons in a bulk van der Waals semiconductor. They form due to strong localization and spin-valley coupling of charge carriers. By combining high-field magneto-reflectance experiments and ab initio calculations for 2H-MoTe2, we explain their salient features: the positive sign of the g-factor and the large diamagnetic shift. Our investigations solve the long-standing puzzle of positive g-factors in transition metal dichalcogenides, and pave the way for studying collective phenomena in these materials at elevated temperatures. Magnetic wide-bandgap semiconductors based on ZnO and GaN are promising for spintronics applications and interesting for studying the interaction of charge carriers with magnetic ions. We use time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy to investigate the ultrafast spin dynamics in Zn1− xMn xO and Ga1− xMn xN. The mean field electron-magnetic ion exchange constant is determined by measuring the transient effective g-factor ( g*) for these materials. Two-dimensional materials awakened a strong interest in the scientific and technological communities due to their exceptional properties that can be tuned by the material thickness and chemistry. In order to correlate optical properties with crystallographic structure and morphology, in this work, the authors aim at studying GaSe nanoflakes deposited on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite by means of atomic force microscopy, Raman, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The authors found that the basal plane of the flakes can be attributed to the ε-phase expected for bulk samples grown by the Bridgman method. However, a strong difference in the Raman spectra was systematically found at the edge of our GaSe flakes. Forbidden Raman modes located around 250cm-1 were selectively observed at specific locations. These modes could not be directly attributed to the ε-phase observed in the basal plane or in the bulk. The atomic force microscopy investigations show that high topographical features characterize the regions with the highest photoluminescence and the forbidden Raman modes. This change in crystal orientation at selective locations of the flake could activate the E'(LO) Raman mode at 255cm-1. The enhancement of the PL emission around 620nm is also linked to the change in crystal orientation due to an increase in the probability of electronic transitions. These results show the rich physics of GaSe flakes in contrast to what is known from its bulk counterpart with possible applications in photovoltaics and photodetectors for nanoflakes with engineered geometries. Monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides hold the promise for a new paradigm in electronics by exploiting the valley degree of freedom in addition to charge and spin. For MoS2, WS2, and WSe2, valley polarization can be conveniently initialized and read out by circularly polarized light. However, the underlying microscopic processes governing valley polarization in these atomically thin equivalents of graphene are still not fully understood. Here, we present a joint experiment-theory study on the ultrafast time-resolved intervalley dynamics in monolayer WS2. Based on a microscopic theory, we reveal the many-particle mechanisms behind the observed spectral features. We show that Coulomb-induced intervalley coupling explains the immediate and prominent pump-probe signal in the unpumped valley and the seemingly low valley polarization degrees typically observed in pump-probe measurements compared to photoluminescence studies. The gained insights are also applicable to other light-emitting monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, such as MoS2 and WSe2, where the Coulomb-induced intervalley coupling also determines the initial carrier dynamics. We discover an excited bound three-particle state, the 2s trion, appearing energetically below the 2s exciton in monolayer WS2, using absorption spectroscopy and ab initio GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. The measured binding energy of the 2s trion (22 meV) is smaller compared to the 1s intravalley and intervalley trions (37 and 31 meV). With increasing temperature, the 1s and 2s trions transfer their oscillator strengths to the respective neutral excitons, establishing an optical fingerprint of trion-exciton resonance pairs. Excitons dominate the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides optically accessible bright exciton states, TMDs exhibit also a multitude of optically forbidden dark excitons. Here, we show that efficient exciton-phonon scattering couples bright and dark states and gives rise to an asymmetric excitonic line shape. The observed asymmetry can be traced back to phonon-induced sidebands that are accompanied by a polaron redshift. We present a joint theory-experiment study investigating the microscopic origin of these sidebands in different TMD materials taking into account intra- and intervalley scattering channels opened by optical and acoustic phonons. We control the linear polarization of emission from the coherently emitting K+ and K- valleys (valley coherence) in monolayer WS2 with an out-of-plane magnetic field of up to 25 T. The magnetic-field-induced valley Zeeman splitting causes a rotation of the emission polarization with respect to the excitation by up to 35° and reduces the polarization degree by up to 16%. We explain both of these phenomena with a model based on two noninteracting coherent two-level systems. The optical and electronic properties of multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides differ significantly from their monolayer counterparts due to interlayer interactions. The separation of individual layers can be tuned in a controlled way by applying pressure. Here, we use a diamond anvil cell to compress bilayers of 2H-MoS 2 in the gigapascal range. By measuring optical transmission spectra, we find that increasing pressure leads to a decrease in the energy splitting between the A and the interlayer exciton. Comparing our experimental findings with ab initio calculations, we conclude that the observed changes are not due to the commonly assumed hydrostatic compression. This effect is attributed to the MoS 2 bilayer adhering to the diamond, which reduces the in-plane compression. Moreover, we demonstrate that the distinct real-space distributions and resulting contributions from the valence band account for the different pressure dependencies of the inter- and intralayer excitons in compressed MoS 2 bilayers.
