11. Identification of the risk factors in concentrated seawater from seawater desalination process

Abstract

Based on the whole desalination process, this paper reviewed the source and fate of risk factors in concentrated seawater including salinity, temperature, chemicals used for pretreatment, chemicals required in desalination process, by-products, corrosion products, and filter backwash. According to the hazard and toxicological thresholds combined with the no-effect concentration for marine species, the risk factors of brine discharge to seawater environment were further identified. The results showed that the risk factors contained ferric salt, aluminium salt, acrylamide, phosphates and total phosphorus, residual chlorine, total chlorine and disinfection by-products, isothiazolinone, sodium bisulfite, and heavy metals/metalloids such as copper, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zinc, lead, titanium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium, mercury and barium. After the preliminary assessment, it was necessary to further monitor the risk factors in situ and know their actual concentration level in brine from seawater desalination, so as to provide a scientific basis for accurately assess the environmental influence of discharge brine in the seawater.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Novel therapeutic strategies are emerging with the increased understanding of the underlying mechanisms of human osteosarcoma. This current study tends to decipher the potentially critical role of DEP domain-containing 1 (DEPDC1), a tumor-related gene, during the progression of osteosarcoma. METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis of 25,035 genes from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) databases was performed to screen differentially expressed genes between osteosarcoma and normal control groups, complemented by the examination of 85 clinical osteosarcoma specimens. Furthermore, the manipulation of DEPDC1 expression levels by using silencing RNA (siRNA) or lentiviral vector intervention on human osteosarcoma cells was performed to reveal its role and interactions in in vitro and in vivo settings. RESULTS: Gene expression profile analysis and immunohistochemical (IHC) examination suggested that DEPDC1 is highly expressed in human osteosarcoma cells and tumor tissue. The silencing of DEPDC1 arrested osteosarcoma cell proliferation, promoted apoptosis, and ceased tumor metastasis. Studies involving clinical human osteosarcoma cases exhibited a strong correlation of DEPDC1 over-expressed osteosarcoma specimens with a reduced patient survival rate. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, this study demonstrated that DEPDC1 is a critical driver in the promotion of osteosarcoma progression and results in poor patient prognosis. Genetically targeting or pharmacologically inhibiting DEPDC1 may serve as a promising strategy for treating human osteosarcoma.

Abstract

In order to provide technical support and theoretical support for the application of AlxCrFeNi3Ti0.3high-entropy alloy in the tribological field，the AlxCrFeNi3Ti0.3high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by arc melting，and the effects of the Al contents on the microstructure，mechanical and tribological properties of the HEAs were investigated by X-ray diffractometer，Vickers hardness tester，friction testing machine，universal testing machine，three-dimensional profilometer，scanning electron microscope，etc.Results showed that the addition of the Al made the microstructure of the HEAs transformed from a single FCC phase to a coexistence of FCC and BCC with dendritic structure.With the increase of the Al content，the density of the HEAs decreased while the hardness，yield strength and compressive strength of the HEAs increased significantly，showing excellent comprehensive mechanical properties.Moreover，the addition of the Al significantly improved the wear resistance of the HEAs，in which the room temperature wear resistance of the Al1.2CrFeNi3Ti0.3HEA increased about 8 times compared with that of the HEA without Al.The wear mechanism of the HEAs changed from abrasive wear to oxidative wear with increasing Al content.Besides，the increase in strength and hardness as well as the formation of the hard oxide layer on the worn surface were the main reasons for the improved wear resistance of the HEAs.

Abstract

This paper firstly proposes a digital resource system of university libraries oriented to knowledge service for digital library resource evaluation research, which mainly consists of a knowledge service diamond system and digital resource diamond system, and studies the evaluation elements and evaluation process of this system, then constructs the evaluation system of library digital resources from quantitative evaluation and qualitative evaluation, etc., and through multi-level topologizable theory, the evaluation indexes and The evaluation indexes and the correlation function are calculated by multi-level topology theory, to derive the weight coefficients and comprehensive superiority of the evaluation indexes, and an example analysis of the digital library based on multi-level topology optimization decision making is conducted. The results show that the users’ comprehensive evaluation of digital library decision-making is excellent, S2, S5 is good, S3 is medium, and S4 is average, where S5 has a higher comprehensive correlation degree in the good level than the correlation degree of S2, indicating that this study improves the quality of digital library decision making in universities and then better serves the users.
