A system has been developed to remotely, continuously, and quantitatively measure the physiological activity of trees. The developed tree physiological activity monitoring (TPAM) system is equipped with electrical impedance, temperature, and light intensity measurement functions. In the two-contact impedance measurement method used in the previous plant impedance measurement, errors due to the polarization impedance of the electrodes could not be avoided. The developed TPAM system adopted a four-contact measurement method that could avoid polarization impedance errors, and, with it, the long-term monitoring of zelkova trees was performed. The monitoring of seasonal changes was conducted from July to November, and an impedance change pattern that repeated on a daily basis was observed in the short term, and an overall increase in the impedance was observed in the long term. Impedance changes related to daily temperature changes were observed even after all the tree leaves had fallen, meaning that this effect should be excluded when using impedance to evaluate tree vitality. For this reason, the influence of temperature fluctuations was excluded by using only the impedance values at the same daily temperature of 25 degrees from July to November. The analysis results at 25 degrees showed that the tree impedance value increased linearly by 8.7 Ω per day. The results of this series of long-term monitoring and analysis revealed that the ambient temperature must be taken into account in the evaluation of tree physiological activity based on electrical impedance. Premise: The hydraulic architecture in the leaves, stems and roots of plants constrains water transport and carbon gain through stomatal limitation to CO2 absorption. Because roots are the main bottleneck in water transport for a range of plant species, we assessed the ecophysiological mechanism and importance of a high fraction of root hydraulic resistance in woody and herbaceous species. Methods: Biomass partitioning and hydraulic conductance of leaves, stems, and roots of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica, a perennial herb) and Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata, a deciduous tall tree) were measured. Theoretical analyses were used to examine whether the measured hydraulic architecture and biomass partitioning maximized the plant photosynthetic rate (the product of leaf area and photosynthetic rate per leaf area). Results: Root hydraulic resistance accounted for 83% and 68% of the total plant resistance for Japanese knotweed and Japanese zelkova, respectively. Comparisons of hydraulic and biomass partitioning revealed that high root‐resistance fractions were attributable to low biomass partitioning to root organs rather than high mass‐specific root conductance. The measured partitioning of hydraulic resistance closely corresponded to the predicted optimal partitioning, maximizing the plant photosynthetic rate for the two species. The high fraction of root resistance was predicted to be optimal with variations in air humidity and soil water potential. Conclusions: These results suggest that the hydraulic architecture of plants growing in mesic and fertile habitats not only results in high root resistance due to small biomass partitioning to root organs, but contributes to efficient carbon gain. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of the Tertiary relict tree Zelkova serrata was reported in this study. The chloroplast genome is 158,875 bp in length with a typical angiosperm quantitative structure consisting of a large single copy (87,412 bp) and a small single copy (18,683 bp) separated by a pair of inverted repeat (26,390 bp). Genome annotation revealed a total of 129 genes comprising 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenomic analysis based on the whole plastomes indicated that Z. serrata and Z. schneideriana formed a well-supported monophyletic clade sister to genus Ulmus in Ulmaceae.

The complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of an endangered tree species, Zelkova schneideriana, was first assembled and characterized based on Illumina pair-end sequencing. The cp genome is 158,991 bp in length, with a quantitative structure comprising a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 26,427 bp separated by a large single copy (LSC) of 87,424 bp, a small single copy (SSC) of 18,713 bp. A total of 129 genes were annotated including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on the cp genomes indicates that Z. schneideriana is closely related to genus Ulums in Ulmaceae.

Zelkova, a relic of the Cenozoic, is an element of Northern Hemisphere woodlands. We sequenced and combined ITS and trnL- trnF, psbA- trnH, and rbcL to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree. The result shows that there are two geographical groups, East Asia and western Asia-southern Europe appeared within Zelkova. The age of Zelkova was traced to Cretaceous ca. 70 Ma, the crown divergence age of the Ulmaceae. Generic diversification was started at Paleocene ca. 53 Ma. Based on the reconstructed ancestral area, northeastern China was speculated to be the place of origin, from where species migrated westward to western Asia-southern Europe and dispersed to Japan and Korea within East Asia. East Asia, especially the Chinese subtropical region, was presumed to be the diversity center. The historical and ecological causes of the Zelkova distribution pattern are presumed to relate to the East Asian monsoon onset at about 22 Ma as well as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau uplift. A hundred pollen and plant macrofossil records from the Iberian Peninsula, Southern France, the Italian Peninsula, Greece and the Aegean, and the southwestern Black Sea area formed the basis for a review of the Quaternary distribution and extirpation of tree populations from Southern Europe. Following a discussion of the caveats/challenges about using pollen data, the Quaternary history of tree taxa has been reconstructed with attention to Taxodium/Glyptostrobus , Sciadopitys , Cathaya , Cedrus , Tsuga , Eucommia , Engelhardia , Carya , Pterocarya , Parrotia , Liquidambar , and Zelkova. The timing of extinction, distributed over the whole Quaternary, appears very diverse from one region to the other, in agreement with current biodiversity in Southern Europe. The geographical patterns of persistence/disappearance of taxa show unexpected trends and rule out a simple North to South and/or West to East trend in extirpations. In particular, it is possible to detect disjunct populations ( Engelhardia ), long-term persistence of taxa in restricted regions ( Sciadopitys ), distinct populations/species/genera in different geographical areas ( Taxodium type). Some taxa that are still widespread in Europe have undergone extirpation in Mediterranean areas in the lateglacial period and Holocene ( Buxus , Carpinus betulus , Picea ); they provide an indication of the modes of disappearance of tree populations that may be useful to evaluate correctly the vulnerability of modern fragmented plant populations. The demographic histories of tree taxa obtained by combined palaeobotanical and genetic studies is a most challenging field of research needed not only to assess species/population differentiation, but also to reach a better understanding of extinction processes, an essential task in the current global change scenario. A new fossil species ofZelkovais described from the Oligocene Ningming Formation of Guangxi, South China.Zelkova ningmingensissp. nov.is characterized by leaves with craspedodromous venation pattern and drupaceous fruit type. The new species possesses elliptical to ovate leaves, bearing 7–12 pairs of secondary and simple toothed margin, as well as epidermal cells with straight or rounded anticlinal walls. The species is compared with extant and other fossil species hitherto reported of the genus. It is most similar to the livingZelkova schneiderianain the leaf gross morphology and epidermal characters, which may be suggested to be the ancestral type ofZelkova schneideriana. The discovery ofZelkova ningmingensissp. nov.in Guangxi indicates thatZelkovahas already existed in southern China as early as the Oligocene. In combination withZelkovamaterial from the Oligocene of Europe, it can be inferred that EurasianZelkovahad begun to diversify by at least the Oligocene. Plants such as tree species respond to their surrounding environmental variations over their biological life cycle. One of the techniques to study the tree response to environmental conditions is dendrochronolog. In this study, 20 samples were prepared from 10 Zelkova carpinifolia trees in Badleh-Sari area. The effects of climate variables (precipitation and temperature) on annual rings of Zelkova carpinifolia trees were examined. Samples rings cross-date was determined using dendrochronological method. Also a chronology of 78 years period was made (1932-2012 AD). Mean Sensitivity (MS), mean correlation coefficient between the samples (trees), EPS and SNR, were determined as 20%, 0.5, 0.88 and 4.11 respectively. Analysis of the relationship between growth and climate over the period of 1951 – 2005, using response function (RF) showed that temperature did not significantly affect growth but total precipitation in February had positive effect (r = 0.45 p

Two methods of rooting of Zelkova softwood cuttings were analyzed: (1) quick-dip method and (2) contact method - the thin polyethylene film (20 mm) laid directly over the cuttings during the rooting process. The control for contact method was a low tunnel with a thick polyethylene film. One group of cuttings in the contact method was treated with quick-dip (IBA 2,500 μg•mL-1, carrier-ethyl alcohol) during 5 sec, and the other group was treated with water solution of IBA (50 μg•mL-1) in 24-hour treatment. The third group was control - untreated cuttings. The same groups of cuttings were also used in low tunnels. The number and length of primary and secondary roots were measured on rooted cuttings. The results of all treatments show that contact method in combination with water solution of IBA was the best with 92% of rooted cuttings. No significant differences were obtained between this treatment and quick-dip + contact method (85.3%). Rooting of cuttings under low tunnel was significantly lower. In general, contact method was better than low tunnel, disregarding the carrier used. These results recommend the almost unknown contact method in nursery propagation of Zelkova, as an alternative, non-invasive species for the conditions in Serbia.

In the spring of 2013, Akira Suzuki, the Japanese architectural critic, editor and Professor of Architecture at Musashino Art University, issued an invitation to three architects to design and self-build a tree house for HC Andersen Park in the suburbs of Tokyo. He observes how the resulting ephemeral structures, built out of the trees themselves, invited interaction with visitors and, and were 'less material buildings with solid roofs and walls than 'conditions' or 'happenings''. He discerns that the widespread adoption of social media in Japan has resulted in a paradigm shift. This has moved creativity away from the folly, as an object of contemplation, scale-less and position-less on the landscape's horizon and solitary in the mind. In its place, the solitary browsing of networks is causing people to meet in actual space, which resists the easy flows of internet connectivity without imposing walls or rooms. A new marine pollen record from SE Sicily is presented. The pollen study was done at a sub-decadal resolution to assess the role and extent of human impact in driving regional environmental and land cover changes over the last four hundred years. The combination of palaeoecological evidence and historical documents provides a detailed report of the main ecological dynamics in relation to socio-economic events, past land use, and land management regulations in Sicily. Our palaeovegetational reconstruction reveals a remarkably stable landscape, preserved by traditional land use practices that have persisted through the long-lasting feudal history of Sicily. After centuries of human-induced environmental stability, an abrupt change in vegetation structure occurred around 1950 AD, reflecting the modern land use policies and agricultural reforms following the Second World War. Two European species belong to the genus Zelkova: Z. abelicea Boisser, endemic to the island of Crete, and Z. sicula Di Pasquale, Garfì and Quézel, endemic to Sicily. Nuclear DNA markers (ISSR and AFLP) were analysed in the two species. Results showed genetic variation within the Z. abelicea population but not within the Z. sicula population. This species, existing as a unique population, revealed to be represented by a unique genotype, which is not present in the Z. abelicea sampling, thus indicating that an extreme reduction of genetic variability characterises Z. sicula. Based on this result, we can assume that agamic propagation is the reproductive strategy of this species in its present environment, unfavourable to the development of regular and functional flowering structures. The priorities for conservation programs are discussed in the light of the different genetic resources represented by the two taxa. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Chloroplast ( trnL) and ribosomal (ITS2)sequences and chloroplast DNA (PCR-RFLP andSSR) markers were analysed in two relicUlmaceae tree species: Zelkova abelicea,from Crete, and Z. sicula, from Sicily.The analysis of the plastidial trnLintron and of ITS2 ribosomal sequences revealedtheir divergence from the related species Z. carpinifolia, widespread in the Caucasianregion; one base substitution in the trnLintron was detected between the twoMediterranean species, thus suggesting theirrecent separation. Molecular markers(plastidial PCR-RFLP and SSR) showed an evidentgenetic differentiation between Z. siculaand Z. abelicea, the two species beingcharacterised by different haplotypes. Nowithin population variation was detected usingdifferent chloroplast markers in Z. abelicea and Z. sicula. Paleobotanicaldata proved that the genus Zelkova wasabundant and widespread in central Italy untilit became extinct in the continental part ofEurope during last glaciation events andsurvived only in two Mediterranean islands. Thesegregation of the two Mediterranean relicspecies might have occurred as a consequence ofthe strong reduction of their distribution andthe following geographic isolation. We developed 14 microsatellite loci from an enriched genomic DNA library of a broad-leaved deciduous tree, Zelkova serrata. Of 198 clones from the library, 112 contained microsatellite repeat regions. The M13-tailed primer method was used for economy. Sequence-specific primer pairs were designed for 58 of 76 candidate clones. Fourteen of these primer pairs successfully amplified polymorphic single loci among 34 individuals collected from the Kanto breeding region in Japan. The expected heterozygosity for the 14 microsatellite markers ranged from 0.378 to 0.876, suggesting that these will prove valuable for breeding and ecological studies on Z. serrata.
