Background: The aim of the study was to assess the number and anatomical classification of roots and root canals of first and second mandibular molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a Chilean population.Materials and Methods: This study evaluated the CBCT scans of 289 patients aged between 14 and 86 years, obtaining a sample of 1022 mandibular first and second molars. The number of roots and root canals was evaluated according to the anatomical classification proposed by Ahmed in 2016. Data were analysed using Pearson's chi-squared test and ANOVA.Results: Nine hundred fifty-one (93.05%) molars had two roots, while the remaining 71 (6.95%) molars had one root. The most frequent root and root canal morphologies found were: ²MM M² D¹ (29.65%), ²MM M²⁻¹ D¹ (22.3%) and ²MM M¹ D¹ (13.4%) (M - mesial, D - distal), with a total of 32 different anatomical distributions. C-shaped canals were present in 56 molars and were more frequently found in women than in men (7.1% vs. 3.88%; p = 0.024).Conclusions: The analysis of internal anatomy using CBCT revealed a highly variable distribution of root canals. This study reports an overview of the economic, social and environmental performance of the main South American countries (SAC) as measured by the Sustainable Society Index. This is a well-known composite indicator, composed of 21 indicators, grouped in seven categories, covering environmental, social and economic wellbeing dimensions. Thirteen European countries recently incorporated into the European Union (NEUC) are considered as a reference. The study covers the period 2006-2016. The South American Region features significant natural resources and plays an important role in the global economy. However, there is concern about the long-term sustainability of social and economic development, given the high rate of economic growth based on the production of low added-value primary products. Sustainable development requires reasonable balance between economic, social and environmental performance, as well as a sustained and balanced increase in performance associated with those fundamental dimensions. Moreover, it is important to agree on minimum performance levels for all performance indicators, taking into account particular social, economic and environmental realities. SAC feature a clear imbalance in some categories affecting the economic, social and environmental wellbeing dimensions, showing either stagnation or significant decrease in recent years. The use of conidiogenesis in the taxonomy of anamorphic fungi is widely known. An anellid zone may be indistinguishable by light field optical microscope, causing confusion in the application of the term "anellidic" or "phialidic". A technique based on the combination of the action of microwaves with the method of impregnation of silver from Rio Hortega, modified by Piva and collaborators, applied to anellidic fungi is presented. It is of low cost, fast, to demonstrate the anellidic fungi, in a safe and reproducible way, with a high degree of definition in the details, in light field optical microscope. The silver impregnation method, using a domestic microwave oven for 30 seconds, applied to eight species of anellid fungi, had an average success rate of 61%, achieving a shorter technique with a high degree of definition of the anellated zones. The average rises to 97% by not considering the Exophiala species. The best results were obtained with Scopulariopsis, Scedosporium and Hortaea. Background: Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a non‐antibiotic antimicrobial substance with significant effects on pathogenic oral micro‐organisms. The effects of HOCl as an antiplaque agent have not been studied. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the substantivity of HOCl mouthwashes compared with chlorhexidine (CHX) rinses and a placebo. Materials and Methods: A double‐blind randomized controlled trial with 75 participants was conducted. Participants were divided into five groups using block randomization: 0.025% HOCl, 0.05% HOCl, 0.12% CHX, 0.2% CHX, and sterile water as a placebo. Participants were instructed to use each rinse solution for 30 seconds after dental prophylaxis. Samples of saliva were taken at baseline and after 30 seconds, 1, 3, 5 and 7 hours to assess substantivity, and bacterial viability was established by the fluorescence method. Visible plaque in all participants was assessed with the Turesky index at baseline and at 7 hours, and adverse events were also assessed. Results: HOCl led to a 33% reduction in bacterial counts in the saliva after 30 seconds compared with a 58% reduction by CHX. HOCl has no substantivity, and bacterial counts returned to baseline after 1 hour. Placebo treatment led to the highest plaque count after 7 hours compared with the CHX and HOCl groups, although the differences were not significant. HOCl rinsing induced the highest percentages of unpleasant taste and dryness sensations. Conclusions: HOCl rinses have an initial effect on bacterial viability in saliva but have no substantivity. Although measuring bite force is an important indicator of the health of the masticatory system, few commercially available transducers have been validated for routine clinical use. T-Scan® III Occlusal Analysis System allows to record the bite force distribution, indicating its relative intensity and occlusal timing. Nevertheless, even fewer studies have evaluated the validity and reliability of the latest generation of the T-Scan® occlusal analysis system. To determine the validity and reliability of the T-Scan® III system when measuring total absolute bite force under laboratory conditions. Known forces were applied to 18 T-Scan® III sensors, which were classified into two groups differentiated by their production series. Both Lin's concordance correlation coefficient ( CCC) and the intra-class correlation coefficient ( ICC) were used to assess the system's reliability and validity. Considering all the sensors studied, a substantial level (Lin's CCC 0·969) and a very good level of reliability ( CCI 0·994) were obtained. When evaluating the validity of the system, a poor (Lin's CCC 0·530) and moderate ( ICC 0·693) agreement were also obtained. The main factor that negatively influenced the validity of the T-Scan® III under these study conditions was the significant difference in the behaviour of the two sensor groups. The T-Scan® III showed a high degree of reliability when used to perform consecutive measurements. Information regarding the anatomy of the physiological apical foramen is limited. Knowing its diameter and shapes contributes to clinical work, specifically to the cleaning and shaping of the apical third. The aim of this ex vivo study was to determine the minimum and maximum diameters and shape of the physiological apical foramen in the roots of maxillary and mandibular first molars. A descriptive study was conducted on 89 recently extracted first molars. Roots 3-5 mm from the apex were sectioned and prepared for analysis at 40x magnification. The minimum and maximum diameters of each physiological foramen were measured using the program Motic Images plus 2.0 ML. The shape of the foramina, classified as round, oval or irregular, was determined by the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters. A total of 174 physiological foramina were analyzed. The average of the minimum and maximum diameters was between 0.24-0.33 mm in maxillary first molars and between 0.25-0.33 mm in mandibular first molars. In maxillary molars, the most common shape of the foramen was oval (50%), then irregular (32%), then round (18%). In mandibular molars, the oval shape was also the most frequent (59%), followed by irregular (23%) and round (18%). The findings of this study regarding the morphology of physiological apical foramina in first molars make it easier for the operator to choose the appropriately-sized instruments to perform endodontic therapy successfully. This paper presents experimental results of a methylene blue removal system based on heterogeneous catalytic ozonation in the presence of natural zeolite. The effect of pH (2–10) and the presence of radical scavengers (acetate ions) on homogeneous and heterogeneous ozonation systems are assessed at laboratory scale. Results show that heterogeneous catalytic ozonation using natural zeolite increases methylene blue removal rate with respect to the single ozonation process at all pH values. The inhibitory effect of free-radical scavengers is impaired by zeolite, suggesting that methylene blue oxidation reactions take place mainly on the zeolite surface. The increase in methylene blue removal rate could be related to ozone interaction with hydroxyl groups present on the zeolite surface ( , S‒OH, S‒O−), which plays a key role in the reaction mechanism. In wastewater treatment facilities, air quality is not only affected by conventional unpleasant odour compounds; toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCS) are also found. In this study, the adsorptive capacity of Chilean natural zeolite toward VOC removal was evaluated. Moreover, the influence of zeolite chemical surface properties on VOC elimination was also investigated. Three modified zeolite samples were prepared from a natural Chilean zeolite (53% clinoptilolite, 40% mordenite and 7% quartz). Natural and modified zeolite samples were characterised by nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, elemental analyses and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Chemical modifications of natural zeolite showed the important role of Brønsted acid sites on the abatement of VOCS. The presence of humidity has a negative effect on zeolite adsorption capacity. This work aims to present experimental results on the treatment of methylene blue contaminated waters using heterogeneous catalytic ozonation promoted by volcanic sand. The effect of pH (2-8), and the presence of radical scavengers (acetate ions) in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems are evaluated at laboratory scale. Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation using volcanic sand increases methylene blue removal rate. In the presence of free radical scavengers, only a 37% reduction on methylene blue removal rate is observed in the heterogeneous system, as compared with 70% when homogeneous ozonation is used. The results obtained here indicate the importance of chemical surface properties on methylene blue oxidation reactions, suggesting that acid surface sites of volcanic sand play a key role on the reaction mechanism. Abstract: A Gram-negative, arsenite-oxidizing bacterial strain, designated VC-1, was isolated from sediment samples from the Camarones Valley in the Atacama Desert, Chile. Strain VC-1 was strictly aerobic, oxidase and catalase positive, rod shaped, of about 5.5μm in length and 0.5–1.0μm in diameter. It was motile by means of multiple polar flagella. The phylogenetic reconstruction of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, an MLSA study by concatenating six genes, and DDH studies indicated that the strain differed genotypically from its closest relatives and was therefore recognized as a new species within the genus Pseudomonas. Phenotypic analysis combining metabolic tests, fatty acid profiles and MALDI-TOF profiles of total cell extracts supported the classification of the new species for which we propose the designation Pseudomonas arsenicoxydans sp. nov. This paper compares experimental results on methylene blue (MB) removal systems based on ozone oxidation, zeolite adsorption, and simultaneous adsorption-oxidation using ozone in the presence of natural zeolite. The effect of pH (2-8), and the presence of radical scavengers (sodium acetate) on process rates and removal efficiencies are assessed at laboratory scale. The experimental system consisted of a 1 L differential circular flow reactor and an ozone generator rated at 5 g O3/h. Results show that ozone oxidation combined with zeolite adsorption increases the overall MB oxidation rate with respect to ozonation process and zeolite adsorption. In presence of free radical scavenger, only a 25% of reduction on MB removal rate are observed in the simultaneous treatment, as compared with 70% when ozonation treatment is used, suggesting that MB oxidation reactions take mainly place on the zeolite surface. Arsenic is naturally present in rocks, soil, water, and air. It is released to the environment by natural processes such as volcanic eruptions, and rock erosion. In this study, two arsenite-oxidizing strains were isolated from volcanic rocks obtained from the Camarones Valley, Atacama Desert, Chile. Strains were isolated from biofilms and identified by 16s ARNr sequences analysis. aox genes were detected by RT-PCR. The arsenic oxidation ability was assayed with silver nitrate and HPLC-HG-AAS. Four arsenite-resistant strains were isolated (8 mM). RT-PCR analysis showed the presence of aox genes in UC-2 and UC-6 strains. In addition, UC-2 and UC-6 strains were able to oxidize 90 and 95% arsenite present in the medium to arsenate, at a rate of 9.3 and 9.8 μg ml hrespectively. Bicarbonate (HCO) was used as unique carbon source. Finally, the significative oxidation capacity shown by both strains opens the way to further studies aimed at implementing biological systems to treat arsenic rich wastewater. This paper presents experimental results on the effect of temperature on the rate of Imidacloprid removal from waste water using homogeneous photo-Fenton processes. Experiments were conducted in a 2 L photo reactor set at 15-42°C, initial concentrations in the range of 10 to 40mgL-1 Fe(II) and 100-450mgL-1 H2O2; 30 150 min processing times. Initial H2O2 concentration determined the extent of the oxidation process, whereas iron concentration played a key role in the process kinetics. Homogeneous photo-Fenton showed a fast initial reaction leading to 50% Imidacloprid degradation after less than 1 min of treatment, followed by a slower process until full removal was achieved. Rapid Fe(II) oxidation to Fe(III) seems responsible for the initial Imidacloprid removal. Imidacloprid removal fitted well a pseudo-first order kinetic scheme, with apparent activation energy of approximately 31.6 kJ/mole. Untreated Imidacloprid samples showed significant acute toxicity to Daphnia magna and genotoxic effects on Bacillus subtilis. Acute toxicity and genotoxicity remained detectable even after complete pesticide removal, showing that toxic by-products were present. Degradation of 2.5 mM EDTA-Fe solution was performed in a coupled photocatalytic-biological reactor. The system consists of a photochemical annular reactor filled with TiO2 immobilized on glass Raschig rings coupled with an activated sludge continuous reactor. Around 50 % of EDTA degradation was reached after 150 min irradiation. Simultaneously a four-fold increase in biodegradability, measured as BOD5/COD ratio, was observed. The activated sludge is not capable to degrade the complex EDTA-Fe but it removed partially the COD and efficiently the BOD5 of the photochemically treated solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper describes lake sediment spheroidal carbonaceous particle (SCP) profiles from Laguna Chica San Pedro, located in the Biobío Region, Chile (36° 51′ S, 73° 05′ W). The earliest presence of SCPs was found at 16cm depth, corresponding to the 1915–1937 period, at the very onset of industrial activities in the study area. No SCPs were found at lower depths. SCP concentrations in Laguna Chica San Pedro lake sediments were directly related to local industrial activities. Moreover, no SCPs were found in Galletué lake (38° 41′ S, 71° 17.5′ W), a pristine high mountain water body used here as a reference site, suggesting that contribution from long distance atmospheric transport could be neglected, unlike published data from remote Northern Hemisphere lakes. These results are the first SCP sediment profiles from Chile, showing a direct relationship with fossil fuel consumption in the region. Cores were dated using the 210Pb technique. Benzothiazole (BT) is a toxic and poorly biodegradable contaminant, usually found in wastewater from rubber related applications. This compound could be effectively eliminated using advanced treatment processes. This paper compares experimental results on detoxification systems based on ozone oxidation, activated carbon adsorption, and simultaneous adsorption-oxidation using ozone in the presence of activated carbon. The effect of pH (2-11), and the presence of radical scavengers (tert-butyl alcohol and sodium carbonate) on process rates and removal efficiencies are assessed at laboratory scale. The experimental system consisted of a 1 L differential circular flow reactor and an ozone generator rated at 5 g O3/h. Results show that ozone oxidation combined with activated carbon adsorption increases the overall BT oxidation rate with respect to the ozonation process and activated carbon adsorption. In the presence of free radical scavenger, only a 44% reduction in BT removal rate is observed in the simultaneous treatment, as compared with 72% when ozonation treatment is used, suggesting that BT oxidation reactions mainly take place on the activated carbon surface. Benzothiazoles are frequently present in wastewater from rubber related applications, and may be found in surface and underground water bodies causing significant environmental impact. Cost effective treatment processes to deal with such contaminants are needed in both small and large-scale applications. These compounds are poorly biodegradable and could be removed by ozone oxidation before discharge to recipient water courses. Unfortunately, there is limited experimental data reported in the literature on such processes involving benzothiazoles. This article presents experimental data on ozone treatment of benzothiazole (BT), with a view to process design. The effects of pH and radical scavengers on process rate and removal efficiency were assessed at bench scale. Experimental results show that BT could be effectively removed using ozonisation, particularly at pH above 4. The presence of free radical scavengers drastically reduced the BT removal rate even at very low concentrations. Both direct and indirect reactions between ozone and BT were adequately described by second order kinetic schemes, with rate constants estimated at 20°C: kD = 2.3 mol l-1 s-1 and kI = 6 × 109 mol l-1 s-1, respectively. The presence of toxic aromatic organic compounds in industrial wastewater affects the efficiency of conventional biological treatment. The oxidizing power of ozone represents an interesting pretreatment to reduce toxicity and increase biodegradability. At low pH, ozone is known to attack electron-rich structures by direct electrophilic reactions which open aromatic rings, and generate smaller oxidized compounds. This paper reports experimental results on kinetic and toxicity aspects of ozone direct reactions with 1,2-dihydrobenzene. This toxic compound is frequently found in cellulose bleaching effluents. Although the reaction pathway is rather complex, 4-carbon compounds, such asmaleic acid, are readily formed during the first stage of ozonation.These 4-carbon compounds are further oxidized to form smaller molecules (mostly 2-carbon, such as oxalic acid). The apparent kinetics of 1,2-dihydrobenzene follows a second order law, with a rate constant around 0.36 (dm3 mmol-1s-1), at pH 2 and 20 deg. C. Results show that the BOD:COD ratio increase five-foldas ozonation progresses. Furthermore, the mutagenicity of 1,2-dihydrobenzene totally disappears as the aromatic compound is destroyed by ozonation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess the morphology of the mesial root canal system of maxillary molars and the frequency of MB2 canals using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A total of 1374 teeth, first maxillary (1MS, n= 802) and second maxillary molars (2SM, n= 572) of 508 Chilean patients between 8 to 77 years were evaluated through CBCT. The mesiobuccal root was evaluated in all three thirds. Root canal morphology was classified according to Vertucci's method. Data were analyzed by Pearson's Chi-square and Cuzick trend tests. MB2 canal frequency in 1MS was 73.44% and in 2MS 42.48%. The most frequent morphology in 1MS and 2MS were Vertucci type II and I, respectively. No statistically significant association was found between frequencies and side or according to gender (P>0.05). A positive association was found as the age increased in both 1MS and 2MS (P<0.001 and P= 0.023, respectively). Given the anatomical complexity of the mesiobuccal root and the frequent presence of the MB2 canal, the clinician must assume the existence of two canals in this root. The aim of the study was to determine the number and anatomical configuration of roots and root canals of maxillary first and second premolars using cone-beam computed tomography scans. n273 CBCT scans were evaluated, obtaining a sample of 592 maxillary premolars. Root number and root canal anatomy were categorized using Ahmed's classification. Data was analyzed using Pearson's Chi-squared test. Two roots were present on 157 first premolars, one root in 132 premolars and three roots in 17. Second premolars presented one root in 266 samples and two roots in 20; no second premolars presented three roots. Eight different configurations were found; the most frequent was 2MP B1 P1 in first premolars (51,3 %) and 1MP1 (63.6 %) in second premolars. The most frequent morphology found in maxillary premolars in Chilean population was two and three roots. The analysis of internal anatomy using CBCT revealed a highly variable distribution of root canals, generally of low to medium complexity, similar to what is found in other ethnic groups. Abstract: Methanol is a well known toxic congener that contaminates many spirits. Chilean legislation indicates that methanol content in wine distillates should not exceed 1.5 g/L absolute alcohol (a. a.). To achieve this stringent limit, distillers need new tools to improve their operational policies since trial and error experiments are too slow. In this paper, a fast pseudo-stationary simulator for batch distillations in packed bed columns was developed. Packed bed columns are preferable for batch productions of fruit wine distillations since they have a wider range of stable hydraulic operations. The model was solved using orthogonal collocations and considers a liquid vapour equilibrium model of the ternary water-ethanol-methanol mixture, which accounts for most of the volatiles in wine. Simulations compared favourably with our own laboratory batch distillations of water-ethanol-methanol mixtures. In addition, our model simulations were able to qualitatively reproduce the results reported in the literature for methanol recovery in experimental batch distillations. Ethanol recovery errors were within measurement errors, while methanol simulations showed a 3% bias by the end of the distillation. Hence, the developed model is accurate and could be used to explore optimal operational policies in order to minimize methanol content in the heart cut used in the final product. Abstract: To compare tetracycline abatement efficiency, tetracycline solutions were irradiated in aqueous suspensions of TiO2 with three different light sources: a UV lamp, a solarium device and a UV-A lamp. Negligible degradation was observed when irradiations were performed in absence of TiO2. In contrast, rapid tetracycline degradation was observed in the presence of 0.5gl−1 of TiO2. Close to 50% of its initial concentration was eliminated after 10, 20 and 120min when the irradiation source used was a UV lamp, a solarium device and a UV-A lamp, respectively. Significant mineralization was also obtained when the UV lamp and solarium were used for photocatalysis. The antibacterial activity of selected microorganisms was drastically inhibited when exposed to tetracycline solutions treated by the photocatalyst over short irradiation periods. Abstract: Most studies focus on the ecotoxicity of pulp and paper mill effluents, rather than on how they affect the physicochemical and biological structure and the intrinsic ecological capabilities of the receiving watercourses. We investigated the impact of such effluents on the water quality, microplankton system and microbial self-purification capacity (degradation of polymeric organic compounds via extracellular enzymes) of the Biobío River in Chile. The physicochemical impact on the water quality was indicated by raised conductivity, by the pollution of the water body with nitrate, nitrite and soluble reactive phosphorus, by the appearance of tannin and lignin, and by the steady accumulation of inorganic and organic suspended matter (SPM) along the river. From the biological structure of the microplankton system, very low and declining concentrations of chlorophyll a and heterotrophic flagellate densities were determined. The pulp and paper mill effluents introduced high bacterial abundances and biomass concentrations into the river water. This reflects the effective use made of the abundantly available inorganic and organic nutrients within this industrial and municipal process water by bacteria adapted to these extreme environments, additionally supported by concomitant low grazing pressure derivable from low heterotrophic flagellate abundances. Indeed, in one section of the river affected by a pulp mill, the plant was found to significantly contribute to the self-cleaning capacity of the river. However, this elevated degradation capacity was not enough to compensate for the additionally discharged organic material which, together with the toxic effects of the paper plant effluents, significantly interferes with the ecological status of the Biobío River. Objective: The PANELVIEW questionnaire identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the process and methods used for developing health guidelines from the guideline development group's perspective. To expand its use, PANELVIEW ideally should be available in different languages. We aimed to cross-culturally adapt PANELVIEW into Spanish and assess its acceptability, validity, and reliability., Study Design and Setting: To translate and culturally adapt PANELVIEW to Spanish, we followed ISPOR's Translation and Cultural Adaptation Good Practice Principles guidelines. The process consisted of 1) forward and back translation, 2) input from an expert panel, and 3) cognitive debriefing interviews. We assessed the content validity with experts in guideline development who rated instrument items for relevance to determine the item and scale content validity index (I-CVI; S-CVI). We tested the reliability with health guidelines panels from Spanish-speaking countries and measured internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha). We examined acceptability through the number of missing responses for each item., Results: The content comparison between the back-translation and the original version showed that most items (24/34) were conceptually equivalent but with grammatical differences. Through the cognitive interviews, we identified six items with wording issues, ten with clarity issues, and two with applicability issues. I-CVI ranged from 0.77 to 1.00, with two items needing revision. S-CVI was 0.92, showing excellent content validity. The PANELVIEW Spanish version demonstrated very good reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.96). Panel members responded to all items, showing good acceptability., Conclusion: The PANELVIEW Spanish version was conceptually equivalent to the original version and provided satisfactory evidence of acceptability, validity and reliability., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Background: We evaluated the comparative effectiveness of all intra-articular injection corticosteroids for treating internal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Methods : We searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and LILACS through December 2023. We included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) enrolling patients with symptomatic internal disorders of the TMJ comparing any type of intra-articular corticosteroid therapy against another or to another minimally invasive therapy. The outcomes of interest were pain, range of mandibular motion (RoM), quality of life (QoL) and adverse effects at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. We assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. We conducted a frequentist network meta-analysis and assessed the certainty of the evidence (CoE) using GRADE. Results : We included 20 RCTs enrolling 810 participants, which assessed five corticosteroids alone or combined with arthrocentesis or hyaluronic acid. Based on moderate CoE, betamethasone is among the most effective corticosteroids for reducing pain at one (mean difference compared to arthrocentesis [MD], -3.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], -4.55 to -3.05) and three months (MD, -2.74; 95%CI, -3.42 to -2.06), and arthrocentesis plus dexamethasone at six months (MD, -0.80; 95%CI, -1.57 to -0.03). There was no convincing evidence that any intervention was better than arthrocentesis for improving the RoM and QoL at any follow-up time. Methylprednisolone may be more harmful than arthrocentesis for adverse effects. Discussion : Betamethasone and arthrocentesis plus dexamethasone are the most effective in managing pain in the short and medium term compared to arthrocentesis (moderate CoE). Decisions about their use should consider other factors, such as costs, feasibility, and acceptability. Future research should consider QoL as an outcome and assess participants at longer follow-up periods.

Objective: The proposed study aims to compare the effectiveness of conventional endodontic treatment (ET) with that of ET associated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in patients with apical lesion. Methods: Controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical trial (RCT); superiority study with three parallel arms. Randomization will be conducted in exchange blocks of six, with allocation 1:1:1. The control group will receive conventional ET, while experimental group 1 (EG1) will receive conventional ET + aPDT with laser at 660 nm, fluence of 600 J/cm 2 ; EG2 will receive conventional ET + aPDT with laser at 660 nm, fluence of 1200 J/cm 2 . The primary outcome will be canal disinfection before treatment, measured by analysis of colony formation (CFU/mL) and the success rate measured after 6 months on the clinical and radiographic evaluations. The mean and standard deviation will be calculated for continuous outcomes, and the CFU/mL mean between groups will be evaluated by ANOVA test. The Chi-squared test will be calculated for binary outcomes. A logistic regression analysis will be performed to assess differences in the success rate between groups, adjusted for the covariates. The Stata 18 software will be used, with a significance threshold of 5%. Conclusions: Few RCTs have evaluated the effectiveness of aPDT in root canal disinfection in patients with permanent dentition presenting apical lesion. New RCTs with larger numbers of participants are needed to support using aPDT as an adjuvant to conventional ET in root canal disinfection for routine use in clinical practice.
