Range expansions-whether permanent or transient-strongly influence the distribution of genetic variation in space. Monarch butterflies are best known for long-distance seasonal migration within North America but are also established as nonmigratory populations around the world, including on Pacific Islands. Previous research has highlighted stepwise expansion across the Pacific, though questions remain about expansion timing and the population genetic consequences of migration loss. Here, we present reduced-representation sequencing data for 275 monarchs from North America (n = 85), 12 Pacific Islands (n = 136) and three locations in Australia (n = 54), with the goal of understanding (i) how the monarch's Pacific expansion has shaped patterns of population genetic variation and (ii) how loss of migration has influenced spatial patterns of differentiation. We find support for previously described stepwise dispersal across the Pacific and document an additional expansion from Hawaii into the Mariana Islands. Nonmigratory monarchs within the Mariana Islands show strong patterns of differentiation, despite their proximity; by contrast, migratory North American samples form a single genetically panmictic population across the continent. Estimates of Pacific establishment timing are highly uncertain (~100-1,000,000 years ago) but overlap with historical records that indicate a recent expansion. Our data support (i) a recent expansion across the Pacific whose timing overlaps with available historical records of establishment and (ii) a strong role for seasonal migration in determining patterns of spatial genetic variation. Our results are noteworthy because they demonstrate how the evolution of partial migration can drive population differentiation over contemporary timescales.

The Bag‐shelter moth, Ochrogaster lunifer (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae), is an Australian endemic species of Thaumetopoeinae with a univoltine life cycle and gregarious, herbivorous larvae. It is variable throughout its range across the continent, most noticeably by the species of host tree used and nest‐building behaviour. It has long been considered a species complex by some taxonomists, and the lack of gene flow between populations of ground‐nesters and above‐ground nesters at the same sites provides strong evidence for at least two species. We tested the specificity of host use and nesting behaviour of ground‐nesting and trunk‐nesting forms of O. lunifer by transplanting field‐collected egg masses to the other form's host, either in their natural position or in the position used by the other form. At the study site, ground‐nesting and trunk‐nesting (tree‐hugger) O. lunifer coexist. Ground‐nesting larvae are found on Acacia spp., and egg masses are laid at the base of host tree trunks where nests develop whereas tree‐hugger larvae are found on Blakella tessellaris, egg masses are laid in the outer canopy, and nests develop on the trunk or large branches. Of the 47 egg masses of O. lunifer transplanted to the unnatural host, only one cohort of tree‐hugger larvae developed through to adult moths. Placing an egg mass in its unnatural position on its natural host did not prevent the larvae from developing and successfully establishing nests for either nesting‐form, although all the ground‐nesters moved position (from the canopy to the ground) and the tree‐huggers mostly did not (from the ground to the canopy). Only the tree‐hugger form of O. lunifer developed a viable nest on the unnatural host species, established a nest at the unnatural oviposition site, and shared that nest with larvae of the other nesting‐form, suggesting tree‐hugger larvae are somewhat plastic in their behaviour and ecology. Our findings add to previous studies indicating that Acacia is likely the ancestral host of O. lunifer though large areas of its range remain unstudied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monarch butterflies are best known from their migratory North American range, although many resident, year-round breeding populations are established throughout the world. Here, we evaluate two non-exclusive hypotheses for the loss of migration in resident monarch populations: (1) absence of cues that trigger migration; and (2) loss of sensory, neural or physiological systems required for migration. To evaluate the first hypothesis, we exposed resident monarchs from Queensland, Australia to decreasing larval photoperiod and observed reproductive development in resulting females to assess their propensity to show reduced reproductive development, a precursor for long-distance migration. To address the second hypothesis, we measured antennal circadian clock gene expression, a crucial element of the monarch's ability to orientate directionally, in a resident and a migratory population. We found that Australian resident monarchs show reduced reproductive development in response to decreasing photoperiod, consistent with the 'loss of cues' hypothesis. We found no differences in antennal clock gene expression between migratory and resident populations, inconsistent with the 'loss of mechanism' hypothesis. Together, these data indicate that even after hundreds of generations of non-migration, monarchs retain two crucial elements of their migratory repertoire: developmental plasticity associated with decreasing photoperiod and antennal circadian rhythms necessary for directional orientation.

Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae; Hübner) is the major insect pest of pigeon pea [ Cajanus cajan; Fabales: Fabaceae; (L.) Millspaugh] worldwide. Research to develop pest management strategies for H. armigera in pigeon pea has focused heavily on developing less susceptible cultivars, with limited practical success. We examined how pigeon pea crop stage influences plant susceptibility to H. armigera using a combination of glasshouse and laboratory experiments. Plant phenology significantly affected oviposition with moths laying more eggs on flowering and podding plants but only a few on vegetative plants. Larval survival was greatest on flowering and vegetative plants, wherein larvae mostly chose to feed inside flowers on flowering plants and on the adaxial surface of expanding leaves on vegetative plants. Larval survival was poor on podding plants despite moths laying many eggs on plants of this stage. When left to feed without restriction on plants for 7 days, larvae feeding on flowering plants were >10 times the weight of larvae feeding on plants of other phenological stages. On whole plants, unrestricted larvae preferred to feed on pigeon pea flowers and on expanding leaves, but in no-choice Petri dish assays H. armigera larvae could feed and survive on all pigeon pea reproductive structures. Our results show that crop stage and the availability of flowers strongly influence pigeon pea susceptibility to H. armigera. Understanding how landscape composition and configuration drive the dynamics of pests and their various natural enemies is crucial to enhance biological control services (biocontrol). Geographic variability in landscape effects prompts questions about whether this is due to genuine differences or methodological differences among studies, given that most studies are conducted in a single region. This study investigated how the ecological function of parasitoids and predators responds to landscape traits in three regions encompassing an agriculture intensification gradient. The effects of landscape structure and configuration differed among regions and natural enemies. Non-crop habitats increased the abundance of parasitoids only in two less intensified regions presumably due to insufficient amount of non-crop habitats in the intensified region (typically < 10%). Nevertheless, their biological control efficiency (BCE) was consistently increased by non-crop habitats across regions. Higher maize proportion increased predator abundance and their BCE in the two nonmountainous regions. The value of maize as a source habitat for predators may have been limited in the mountainous region due to the lower aphid abundances there. Edge density positively affected abundances of predators and parasitoids, but only positively increased the BCE of all natural enemies combined. Inconsistent regional responses to the same landscape variables suggest that a uniform integrated pest management strategy for alfalfa is impractical. The invasive apple wood borer Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) threatens the viability of wild apple forests in Xinjiang, China, imperiling the preservation of apple germplasm resources in Central Eurasia. Pruning infested branches can reduce the likelihood of outbreaks of various pests and associated damage, but its efficacy and feasibility for managing A. mali has not been well-studied. Therefore, we examined the efficacy of pruning at three different times of the year in commercial orchards in 2018 and 2019. We evaluated the efficacy of pruning for longer-term sustainable management of A. mali in wild apple forests over a five-year period from 2016–2019. Autumn pruning resulted in mortality of all immature A. mali in pruned branches, increased flowering in individual trees, and a significant reduction in both pest density and tree damage on the landscape. Simulation modeling showed that a single well-timed pruning treatment could maintain low pest density for at least 6–10 years. Recurring pruning schedules may be an effective long-term management tool, suppressing A. mali populations in wild apple forests and facilitating ecosystem recovery. This practical tactic could prove instrumental in managing A. mali and sustaining ecosystem health, particularly in the face of future invasions in wild apple forests in central Eurasia. Despite substantial research examining caterpillar–plant interactions, changes in the feeding behaviour of lepidopteran larvae as they develop are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated ontogenetic changes in the behaviour of Helicoverpa armigera larvae feeding on reproductive structures of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan). Specifically, we examined the preference for and avoidance of pigeonpea flowers and pods of first, second, third, and fourth instar H. armigera larvae. We also conducted a no-choice assay to compare the ability of third and fourth instar larvae to penetrate pigeonpea pod walls, which act as a physical defence against herbivory. When presented with a choice between pigeonpea pods and flowers, different instars behaved differently. First and second instar larvae largely avoided pigeonpea pods, instead feeding on flowers; third instar larvae initially avoided pods, but by 24 h, did not strongly discriminate between the structures; and fourth instars demonstrated a preference for pods. When initially placed on pods, first instars were slower than other instars to leave these structures, despite pods being suboptimal feeding sites for small caterpillars. We identified a clear instar-specific ability to penetrate through the pod wall to reach the seeds. Most third instar larvae were unable to penetrate the pod wall, whereas most fourth instars succeeded. Third instars suffered a physiological cost (measured by relative growth rate) when boring through the pod wall, which was not observed in fourth instars. Our study further illuminates the insect–plant interactions of the H. armigera–pigeonpea system and provides evidence for the significant changes in feeding behaviour that may occur during lepidopteran larval development. Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) originates from the South American tropics but has become a major invasive pest of tomato and other Solanaceae crops worldwide. Agricultural protected facilities (APFs) such as greenhouses and plastic tunnels may provide thermal conditions that allow the survival of T. absoluta in temperate zones with cold winters. In this study, a CLIMEX model was used to investigate the dual effects of increasing use of APFs and climate warming on the potential distribution and seasonal dynamics of T. absoluta in China. Our model showed that the northern boundary for year-round population persistence in China, ignoring APFs, was approximately 30°N, covering about 21% of China's area suitable under current climate. The modelled suitable area increased to 31% and northern boundary for year-round population persistence shifted to 40°N in 2080 under global warming. When APF refuges are included, the potential suitable area was 78% under the current climate and 79% under global warming. This suggests that, in the future, the increasing use of APFs will increase the areas at risk of T. absoluta invasion significantly more than global warming because APFs effectively protect T. absoluta from harsh northern winters. In addition, vegetable production in surrounding open fields will be at risk of invasion during milder seasons when APFs are opened and T. absoluta can disperse. Therefore, the micro-climate of APFs should be considered as part of the invasion process, and Integrated Pest Management should be simultaneously implemented inside and outside APFs for the rational management T. absoluta. Simple Summary: The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), invaded China in 2019. The species has been established as a year-round breeding population in most of the southern provinces which are the main winter maize planting areas. The effect of rising nighttime temperatures, driven by the changing climate in this region, on the growth and development of S. frugiperda is unclear. Results of this study show that the survival rate of larvae and pupae significantly declined with daytime temperatures declining and the nighttime temperature range increasing. Development rate accelerated along with the increasing daytime temperatures and nighttime temperatures, except for the intermediate treatments (daytime temperature 24 °C and diurnal range from 2–6 °C). Predictions of FAW development and warnings to local farmers need to be adjusted to take into account more rapid development when nighttime temperatures increase in the warming climate. The Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a serious migratory pest. After invading China in 2019, the species was established as a year-round breeding population in most of the southern provinces. The area of winter maize in this region has been increasing due to the huge demand of fresh maize consumption, which is potentially at risk from this invasive pest, although the growth and development of S. frugiperda in the region's changing climate is unclear, particularly with rising temperatures at night. Here, we used the highest daytime temperatures of 27 °C, 24 °C, 20 °C and decreased these by 2, 4 and 6 °C to reflect the range of nighttime temperatures indicative of winter conditions in a warming climate to evaluate the effect of increasing night temperatures on the growth and development of S. frugiperda. Results show that the survival of larvae and pupae significantly declined with daytime temperatures declining and the nighttime temperature range increasing. Significant developmental effects were observed across all daytime–nighttime temperature treatments, except for adults. Additionally, there were significant interaction effects for all stages, except the egg stage, and generation time. The development rate increased with the increasing daytime temperatures and nighttime temperatures, except for the intermediate treatments (Group II). The uniformity of pupation and emergence times were higher under high daytime temperatures and nighttime temperature treatments. Predictions of FAW development and warnings to local farmers need to be adjusted to take into account the more rapid development when nighttime temperatures increase in the warming climate. Lepidoptera can cause several health issues in humans and domestic animals due to their setae, which are defensive adaptations that protect them from predators. The diversity of venomous Lepidoptera has been explored in several reviews starting from the first comprehensive attempt in 1984 by Kawamoto and Kumada (KK) who compiled a list of 228 species based on previous reviews; however, KK did not cite the original publications for listed species. In this review we validated and updated the KK table. The updated list of venomous Lepidoptera includes 5 superfamilies, 14 families, 208 genera, and 576 species, representing a two-fold increase for genera and 2.9-fold for species with respect to KK. The total number of species in the genera including at least one venomous species, which we argue is likely closer to the true number of venomous species, is 7 times higher (3,620). GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) occurrences for venomous species are 1-4 orders of magnitude higher than those of confamilial non-venomous species. The presence of venomous structures is independent of the relatedness of the clades or geographic region; venom is produced by many species of Zygaenoidea, Lasiocampoidea and Bombycoidea but only by some specialized groups in Papilionoidea and Noctuoidea. There are likely to be multiple evolutionary origins of venom within Lepidoptera, but the exact number is difficult to estimate. The knowledge gap between medical and natural history fields needs to be addressed with novel approaches to study ecology and toxicology. Evolutionary principles are now routinely incorporated into medicine and agriculture. Examples include the design of treatments that slow the evolution of resistance by weeds, pests, and pathogens, and the design of breeding programs that maximize crop yield or quality. Evolutionary principles are also increasingly incorporated into conservation biology, natural resource management, and environmental science. Examples include the protection of small and isolated populations from inbreeding depression, the identification of key traits involved in adaptation to climate change, the design of harvesting regimes that minimize unwanted life-history evolution, and the setting of conservation priorities based on populations, species, or communities that harbor the greatest evolutionary diversity and potential. The adoption of evolutionary principles has proceeded somewhat independently in these different fields, even though the underlying fundamental concepts are the same. We explore these fundamental concepts under four main themes: variation, selection, connectivity, and eco-evolutionary dynamics. Within each theme, we present several key evolutionary principles and illustrate their use in addressing applied problems. We hope that the resulting primer of evolutionary concepts and their practical utility helps to advance a unified multidisciplinary field of applied evolutionary biology.

Simple Summary: Thaumetopoea pityocampa caterpillars are a significant pest of conifer trees in Europe and live gregariously in a communal tent with siblings and conspecifics from other colonies. Despite their economic and medical importance, there has been a lack of quantitative information on the tent construction and foraging behaviour in T. pityocampa colonies. In this study, we observed the tent construction and foraging behaviour of T. pityocampa caterpillars in the field at Tregnago, Verona, Italy. At around sunset, large male caterpillars emerged from the tent first to construct the tent, while many female caterpillars emerged later in the night only to forage. As younger instar caterpillars moulted to older larval instars, the environmental temperature decreased, which consequently increased the duration of their foraging activities. The final tent structure constructed by later instar caterpillars was not isodiametric; more silk was applied on the southern side of the tent to receive maximum insolation during the winter months. This study demonstrated the importance of the winter tent and individual variation in tent construction and foraging behaviour of T. pityocampa caterpillars amongst sex, body size, and larval instar and lays the basis for further investigation in polyethism. As a social organism, living in a communal structure is one of the most important physical barriers against environmental elements and natural enemies. Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Notodontidae, Thaumetopoeinae) caterpillars are conifer pests that spend most of their larval stage in winter. Although T. pityocampa holds economic and medical significance, the tent construction and foraging behaviour are poorly understood. We observed the tent construction behaviour in autumn (October and November) when third- and fourth-instar T. pityocampa caterpillars build the 'winter tent' that can withstand winter conditions. Just before sunset, with no rain and temperatures over 12 °C, tent construction was undertaken by early active individuals, primarily larger male caterpillars. Early active caterpillars emerge from the tent first and spin silk on the tent for expansion and strength. Once temperatures dropped below 12 °C and twilight had passed, the early active caterpillars went out to forage and were later joined by the late active caterpillars, which were predominantly smaller females that had remained inside the tent. Foraging behaviour was continuously monitored for the first to fourth larval instars in the field. Foraging was more frequent in younger instars when environmental temperatures were warmer and became continuous and prolonged in later instar caterpillars as temperatures dropped. The final tent structure built by later instar caterpillars had the thickest layer of silk on the southern side of the tent compared to other orientations to receive maximum solar radiation during the winter. Our study provided additional insights into the collective nest building, foraging and social behaviours observed in Lepidoptera, as well as the roles of individuals within non-eusocial insect colonies. Diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), eggs are vulnerable to rainfall, but the impact is dependent on host plant properties and the nature of oviposition sites. The effects of host plants, common cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. var. pekinensis) (Brassicaceae), and oviposition sites on the fate of eggs subjected to simulated raindrops were investigated in laboratory experiments. In oviposition studies, DBM deposited more eggs on leaf veins than on leaf laminas on both host plants. In common cabbage plants, eggs laid on lower leaves (leaf 2) were less susceptible to dislodgment by rainfall than eggs laid on upper leaves (leaf 6). Eggs laid on the veins on the abaxial surfaces of leaves 2 and 6 of common cabbage plants were less susceptible to dislodgment by raindrops than eggs laid at other sites on this host plant. In Chinese cabbage plants, eggs laid on the veins were less susceptible to dislodgment by raindrops than eggs laid on leaf laminas. When DBM laid eggs in clusters, eggs were less susceptible to dislodgment by raindrops. The presence of waxes on leaf surfaces and concave veins affected egg placement and the retention of eggs at oviposition sites when subjected to raindrops. Eggs were more resistant to raindrops on the concave veined and less waxy leaves of Chinese cabbage plants than on waxy surfaces of smooth common cabbage leaves. When epicuticular wax crystals were removed from common cabbage leaves before oviposition, eggs were more resistant to dislodgment by raindrops. Leaf orientation or angle (horizontal plane vs. an angle of 45°) did not affect the susceptibility of eggs to raindrops. However, eggs were affected indirectly, and vibrations caused by the impact of raindrops resulted in egg removal from both adaxial and abaxial surfaces. Overall, eggs were less likely to be dislodged by raindrops when laid on concave veins and less waxy leaf surfaces. In oviposition tests, DBM laid fewer eggs on plant parts from which they were most easily removed by raindrops, and when they did lay eggs at these sites, they often deposited them in clusters which were more resistant than single eggs to removal by raindrops. The study reiterates the species‐specific nature of DBM‐host plant interactions and shows that female DBM can modify their behaviour to improve the probability of egg survival when substrates available for oviposition are sub‐optimal. Simple Summary: Host specificity in an Australian species of processionary moth was studied over three years in the eastern Australia states of Queensland and New South Wales. The processionary moth Ochrogaster lunifer is known as a species complex, characterised by several nesting forms coexisting in the same geographical area. The canopy nesting forms associated with acacias (Acacia spp.) and eucalypts (Eucalyptus spp. and Corymbia spp.) were recently shown to be genetically distinct, and they were here tested for host specificity by reciprocal transplant experiments. Egg masses and subsequent offspring were moved within and among putative hosts in field settings. Early larval colonies performed significantly better on their natal hosts than on the transplanted ones, with no difference observed for mature larval colonies. The genetic separation identified in previous work is, thus, confirmed by these ecological observations on host specificity, stressing the importance of host specialization in the ongoing speciation process. The 'mother knows best' hypothesis is tested in a species of processionary moth feeding on acacias and eucalypts in Australia. The processionary moth Ochrogaster lunifer (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae; Thaumetopoeinae) is a social caterpillar living in large colonies on a number of tree and shrub species. Five nesting types—canopy, trunk, tree-hugger, hanging, and ground—have been described, and this study deals with canopy nesters on various species of acacias (Acacia spp.) and eucalypts (Eucalyptus spp. and Corymbia spp.). Reciprocal transplant experiments conducted over three years confirm the 'mother knows best' hypothesis, as colonies performed better on the natal host plant than on the recipient ones. Young first instar larvae were less likely to establish on a non-natal host than the mature larvae, and all acacia-sourced canopy egg masses failed to establish on eucalypts. Large larvae were able to establish on transplant hosts. This suggests a strong preference–performance link at what is likely a species level, confirming preliminary results recently published on genetic divergence. Canopy nesting forms also have a lower realised fecundity than the ground nesting form on acacias from the same geographic area, but higher than another canopy nesting form from western Australia. Further observations on ecological and genetic traits are required to draw conclusions about the separation of lineages in the canopy nesting form of O. lunifer, by including populations from other parts of the range for both the herbivore and the host plants. Perhaps one of the central questions in ecology has been what limits the geographic distribution of species. The geographic distributions of the reptile‐ticks Amblyomma limbatum, Bothriocroton hydrosauri and Amblyomma albolimbatum are a classic example of this problem: where these ticks meet, narrow regions‐of‐overlap often occur. Despite studies of interactions among these ticks, and of these ticks and their environment, we still do not understand what limits their geographic distributions. Many hypotheses have been proposed and tested, but all have seemingly been rejected. Our aim was to account for the abundance and the geographic distributions of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station, South Australia, where these species come in contact and have been studied for over 35 years, leading to over 55 000 records of reptiles and their ticks using a capture‐mark‐recapture approach. We constructed models which had combinations of temperature and moisture indices from different months of the year to determine the relationship between climate and tick abundance, and between climate and the shifting local geographic distribution of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station. We found that climate together with the abundance of ticks in the previous year and the abundance of the lizard host, accounted for 54%–77% of the variation in the abundance of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri among years. We also found that the climate in late autumn to winter, together with the abundance of ticks and their host, accounted for 18%–84% of the variation in the geographic distributions of these ticks among years. Climate was central to the abundance and the geographic distributions of A. limbatum and B. hydrosauri at Bundey Bore Station. We speculate that the same mechanisms account for the geographic distributions of A. limbatum, B. hydrosauri and A. albolimbatum elsewhere in Australia; so, climate may explain the three‐tick problem in Austral ecology. The Bag-shelter moth Ochrogaster lunifer (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae: Thaumetopoeinae) is an endemic species of medical and veterinary importance that occurs throughout Australia. The gregarious species is variable with four phylogenetic clades recently identified. One clade comprises trunk-nesters restricted to one host: the Moreton Bay Ash, Corymbia tessellaris (Myrtaceae). Here, we describe aspects of the biology and ecology of this distinctive nesting form dupped the 'tree-hugger' due to its flattish, thick silk nests that hug the trunk and larger branches. The form is univoltine; egg masses are laid in spring and the gregarious larvae develop through seven instars until the mature larvae stop feeding in autumn and later leave the nest (in a procession). The larvae over-winter in the ground as pre-pupae in a loose cocoon of silk. Pupation occurs in late winter and adults emerge in spring. Forty-six per cent of monitored egg masses succeeded in developing through the lifecycle. Tachinids were common parasites of older larvae. Tree-hugger nests provided some insulation against summer heat during the mornings, but the physical characteristics of the nests and tree trunks and the average southern orientation of the nests likely protect larvae against extreme heat. The tree-hugger form of O. lunifer appears morphologically similar to the more ubiquitous ground-nesting form, but there are differences in the colour of egg masses and adults, and in the behaviour and ecology of the larvae and adults.
