Abstract Multispectral camouflage technologies, especially in the most frequently-used visible and infrared (VIS-IR) bands, are in increasing demand for the ever-growing multispectral detection technologies. Nevertheless, the efficient design of proper materials and structures for VIS-IR camouflage is still challenging because of the stringent requirement for selective spectra in a large VIS-IR wavelength range and the increasing demand for flexible color and infrared signal adaptivity. Here, a material-informatics-based inverse design framework is proposed to efficiently design multilayer germanium (Ge) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) metamaterials by evaluating only ~1% of the total candidates. The designed metamaterials exhibit excellent color matching and infrared camouflage performance from different observation angles and temperatures through both simulations and infrared experiments. The present material informatics inverse design framework is highly efficient and can be applied to other multi-objective optimization problems beyond multispectral camouflage.

An attempt is made to modify the shape and nanostructure of core-shell materials, which are usually generated on the basis of amorphous spherical cores. Novel core-shell silicate particles each of which consists of a silicalite-1 zeolite crystal core and mesoporous shell (ZCMS) were synthesized.

The methods for organizing zeolite microcrystals into closely packed mono and multilayers on various substrates by inducing a large number of chemical linkages between the organic functional group tethered to both surfaces are explored. The result indicates that the phenomenon of cross-linking-induced marked increase in the binding strength between the substrate and the monolayers of building blocks works not only for small molecules but also for microcrystals with much higher mass-to-surface area ratios.

The g(sub z) directions of the hydrated and the full dehydrated copper species was determined by comparing the EPR spectrum of a powder sample with that of microcrystals assembled on glass plates. The results showed that the g(sub z) direction of Cu(super 2+) species D is not compatible with site II in the six-ring plane.

Cobalt-immobilized SBA-15 6a-c was synthesized from alkyne-attached SBA 5a-c by the reaction with Co2(CO)8 in toluene. Alkyne group was introduced into amino SBA-15 (4) by imine-linkage or substitution with propargyl bromide to afford iminoalkyne 5a and aminoalkyne 5b, respectively. Meanwhile, alkyne 5c was prepared in one-step by reacting triethoxysilyl hexyne with SBA-15. Dicobalt-complexes 6a-c were characterized by means of FT-IR, solid-state NMR and elemental analysis. The effect of method on the mode of reaction progress and the characteristic properties of the assembled monolayers were investigated during the monolayer assembly of bare zeolite microcrystals onto 3-chloropropyl-tethering glass plates. The tested methods were reflux, reflux with stirring, sonication, and sonication with stacking between the glass plates. The results revealed that the type of method sensitively affects the profiles of the coverage and the binding strength with time and that the monolayer assembly consists of four key steps: dispersion of microcrystals into the solution, attachment of microcrystals onto the substrate, migration of the randomly attached crystals leading to close packing between the microcrystals, and replacement of the substrate-bound microcrystals with those in solution.
