Abstract Objective Although some studies have linked smoking to mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs), data regarding smoking and mortality after OHCAs have not yet been discussed in a meta-analysis. Thus, this study conducted this systematic review to clarify the association. Methods The study searched Medline-PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane libraries between January 1972 and July 2022 for studies that evaluated the association between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. Studies that reportedly showed relative risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were included. The concept of sepsis has recently evolved from one of a ‘systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by infection’ to a ‘severe, potentially fatal organic dysfunction caused by an inadequate or imbalanced host response to infection’. Organ dysfunction is closely related to sepsis. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is the most serious outcome of sepsis, often leading to a poor prognosis. However, specific drugs for sepsis and MODS caused by sepsis remain undetermined, and the fatality rate is relatively high. Under the guidance of modern medicine, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained a wealth of experience in the prevention and treatment of sepsis and plays a key role via the effects of its numerous components, pathways and targets. This study used ‘Sepsis’, ‘Organ dysfunction’ and ‘Traditional Chinese medicine’ as strategies for searching the databases of Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, PubMed and The Web of Science. This paper presents an overview of the current status of TCM component formulations for preventing and treating sepsis with MODS to provide a theoretical basis for clinical treatment and drug development.

The tropical Asian and Australasian floras have a close relationship, and is a vital distribution pattern of seed plants worldwide. As estimated, more than 81 families and 225 genera of seed plants distributed between tropical Asia and Australasia. However, the evolutionary dynamics of two floras were still vague. Here, a total of 29 plant lineages, represented the main clades of seed plants and different habits, were selected to investigate the biotic interchange between tropical Asia and Australasia by integrated dated phylogenies, biogeography, and ancestral state reconstructions. Our statistics indicated that 68 migrations have occurred between tropical Asia and Australasia since the middle Eocene except terminal migrations, and the migration events from tropical Asia to Australasia is more than 2 times of the reverse. Only 12 migrations occurred before 15 Ma, whereas the remaining 56 migrations occurred after 15 Ma. Maximal number of potential dispersal events (MDE) analysis also shows obvious asymmetry, with southward migration as the main feature, and indicates the climax of bi-directional migrations occurred after 15 Ma. We speculate that the formation of island chains after the Australian–Sundaland collision and climate changes have driven seed plant migrations since the middle Miocene. Furthermore, biotic dispersal and stable habitat may be crucial for floristic interchange between tropical Asia and Australasia.

Introduction Hip fracture is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, especially among the elderly. Current evidence on the association between cigarette smoking and mortality in hip-fracture patients is controversial. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on this association. Methods The databases Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies that estimated the effect of smoking on the risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients. Pooled analyses were conducted of the associations, expressed in relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I 2 statistic. Study quality was assessed by the modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and publication bias was evaluated by a funnel plot, Begg’s and Egger’s tests. Subgroup analyses were performed by study design, race/ethnicity, age ≥60 years, smoking status, and follow-up period. Results A total of six articles involving 3739 hip-fracture patients were included in the meta-analysis. Our results indicate that ever-active smoking was significantly associated with an increased risk of death in hip-fracture patients (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). In further subgroup analysis, the risk of death was significantly higher in ever-active smokers than in never smokers in White participants (pooled RR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.05–1.44) and elderly aged ≥60 years (pooled RR=1.19; 95% CI: 1.01–1.40), with no significant association in Asian participants (pooled RR=1.42; 95% CI: 0.95–2.11). Current smokers had more risk of death than never smokers (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). The association was significant in follow-up periods of ≤1 year (pooled hazard ratio, HR=1.34; 95% CI: 1.05–1.71), 3 years (pooled HR=1.22; 95% CI: 1.05–1.43), and 5 years (pooled HR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08–1.46). Conclusions Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients, especially in elderly patients aged ≥60 years, current smokers, and White participants. With the extension of follow-up period, the effect on mortality of smoking is profound and lasting.

C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is an Oort cloud comet with an orbital period of ∼5895 yr. Starting in 2020 March, its nucleus underwent disintegration. In order to investigate the gas and dust properties of C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) during its disintegration, we obtained long-slit spectra at 3600–8700 Å and BVRI multiband images with the Xinglong 2.16 m Telescope in 2020 April. Our observations revealed that C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) exhibited strong emission bands of CN, C _2 , C _3 , and NH _2 , which are superimposed on a dust-scattering continuum, typical of cometary spectra in the optical. The production rates of CN, C _2 , and C _3 derived using the Haser model and the corresponding C _2 /CN and C _3 /CN ratios suggest that C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is a “typical” Oort cloud comet under the A’Hearn classification, although it appears less dusty, as revealed by the Af ρ quantities. Its dust-scattering reflectivity is slightly red, with a gradient of ∼5% per 10 ^3 Å. We model the reflectivity gradient in terms of porous dust and find that the red color is accounted for by porous dust.

We present the discoveries of two giant plants orbiting the red-giant-branch star HD 112570 and the red-clump star HD 154391, based on the radial-velocity (RV) measurements from the Xinglong station and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. Spectroscopic and asteroseismic analyses suggest that HD 112570 has a mass of 1.15 ± 0.12 M _☉ , a radius of 9.85 ± 0.23 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of −0.46 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.47 ± 0.1. With the joint analysis of RV and Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry, we obtain a dynamical mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={3.42}_{-0.84}^{+1.4}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={2615}_{-77}^{+85}$ days, and a moderate eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.14}^{+0.16}$ for the Jovian planet HD 112570 b. For HD 154391, it has a mass of 2.07 ± 0.03 M _☉ , a radius of 8.56 ± 0.05 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of 0.07 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.86 ± 0.1. The super-Jupiter HD 154391 b has a mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={9.1}_{-1.9}^{+2.8}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={5163}_{-57}^{+60}$ days, and an eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ . We found that HD 154391 b has one of the longest orbital periods among those ever discovered orbiting evolved stars, which may provide a valuable case in our understanding of planetary formation at wider orbits. Moreover, while a mass gap at 4 M _Jup seems to be present in the population of giant stars, there appear to be no significant differences in the distribution of metallicity among giant planets with masses above or below this threshold. Finally, the origin of the abnormal accumulation near 2 au for planets around large evolved stars ( R _⋆ > 21 R _☉ ), remains unclear.

Background Smoking kills more than 27,000 people each year. In 2009, amendment of the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act came into effect with expanded ban of smoking including all public indoor places and some public outdoor places, prohibition of all types of promotion, and a raise in tobacco taxation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this amendment on smoking rate and health inequality. Methods Data were drawn from the Taiwan Adult Smoking Behavior Survey (TASBS) conducted under a nationally representative cross-sectional study with telephone interviews from 2004 to 2016. Probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling and post-stratification were used to better represent the characteristics of the population. The annual sample size is approximately 15,000-26,000 persons. Results The adult smoking rate declined from 21.9% in 2008 to 15.3% in 2016, indicating a 30.3% decline in smoking rate and a reduction in the number of smokers by approximately 810,000 within 8 years. The speed of reduction in this period was more remarkable than that experienced in 4 years before the amendment. Among different subgroups, the reduction was more significant in males aged 18-29 and 65 or over than those aged 30-64, and people of lowest level of education (junior high or lower) than those of higher education. Conclusions Implementation of the amended Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act has managed to remarkably reduce both smoking rate itself and inequality in smoking rates. However, continued efforts are needed to achieve the goal of a 30% relative reduction in smoking rate by 2025 set by the World Health Organization (WHO), decreasing the adult smoking rate from 20% in 2010 to 14% in 2025.

Background Smoking kills more than 27,000 people each year in Taiwan. This study aims to demonstrate the significant progress with Taiwan MPOWER performances and compare achievements with OECD and other Asian countries. Methods Assessment data from Taiwan's laws and regulations, a comprehensive health surveillance system, and research database and reports, with WHO MPOWER performance rating indicators. Results The adult smoking rate declined from 21.9% in 2008 to 15.3% in 2016, indicating a 30.3% decline in smoking rate and a decrease in the number of smokers by approximately 810,000 within 8 years. Taiwan has protected over 90% of the population from smoke-free environments by enforcing the law in eliminating second hand smoke in public areas, and promoted the recognition of tobacco hazards to youth especially via campus activities, official websites, Facebook, and YouTube. It´s worth noting that Taiwan is the 2 nd country to carry out the ordinance of smoke-free parks and national parks around the world. Assisting over 110,000 smokers since 2012 in quitting smoking successfully by providing the Second Generation Smoking Cessation Program and other services such as Quitline, cessation classes and cessation counseling. Over 40% of smokers attempt to quit after Taiwan enacted health warning labels on tobacco packs. The Health Promotion Administration has worked with the National Communications Commission (NCC) to establish the guideline that anti-tobacco textual messages are required to add on Radio and TV programs, reminding people of tobacco harming. Conclusions Taiwan gains five 1 st performance (Monitoring, Smoke-free environments, Cessation programmes, Anti-tobacco mass media campaigns, Bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship) while compared to OECD and other Asian countries (New Zealand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Taiwan China, etc.), and ranks among the best with Singapore, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia. Continued efforts are needed to raise the health warnings and taxations in the future.

Background According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, e-cigarette use is doubling from 2008 to 2012 among adolescents. In Taiwan, e-cigarettes contain nicotine are controlled under Pharmaceutical Affairs Act since 2009, but it will violate Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act if e-cigarettes are in the form of tobacco products. This study aims to demonstrate the prevalence of e-cigarette use and reasons for trying e-cigarettes among adolescents. Methods Data were drawn from the Taiwan Global youth tobacco survey (Taiwan GYTS) conducted under a school-based and cross-sectional study from 2014 to 2016. The annual sample size is approximately 45,000 persons. Results Although tobacco use by adolescents has declined substantially over the past few years, the prevalence of e-cigarette use by junior and senior high school students has risen from 2.0% and 2.1% in 2014 to 3.7% and 4.8% in 2016 respectively, both nearly doubling within this three years. 44.1% of junior high school students and 29.4% of senior high school students who have never used any tobacco product have tried e-cigarettes. “Friends are using them” and “The flavor or smell is better” are the two major reasons for trying e-cigarettes among adolescents. Our findings also show that e-cigarette use by adolescents is influenced by the views on conventional tobacco use from parents and friends. Conclusions Facing the rapid development of e-cigarettes, Taiwan's governments have cooperated with each other to comprehensively block hazards from e-cigarettes by border seizure and inspection, source tracking, channel inspection, monitoring and management, education broadcasting and cessation guidance, etc. Taiwan's Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act is now in the process of amending to regulate e-cigarettes under two laws - Pharmaceutical Affairs Act and Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act - with the prohibitions on import, manufacture, and sale, persons under the age of eighteen shall not use e-cigarettes is also prohibited.

OBJECTIVE: X-linked dominant hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most prevalent form of inherited rickets/osteomalacia in humans. The aim of this study was to identify PHEX gene mutations and describe the clinical features observed in 6 unrelated Chinese families and 3 sporadic patients with hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia. METHODS: For this study, 45 individuals from 9 unrelated families of Chinese Han ethnicity (including 16 patients and 29 normal phenotype subjects), and 250 healthy donors were recruited. All 22 exons and exon-intron boundaries of the PHEX gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and directly sequenced. RESULTS: The PHEX mutations were detected in 6 familial and 3 sporadic hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia. Altogether, 2 novel mutations were detected: 1 missense mutation c.1183G>C in exon 11, resulting in p.Gly395Arg and 1 missense mutation c.1751A>C in exon 17, resulting in p.His584Pro. No mutations were found in the 250 healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS: Our study increases knowledge of the PHEX gene mutation types and clinical phenotypes found in Chinese patients with XLH, which is important for understanding the genetic basis of XLH. The molecular diagnosis of a PHEX genetic mutation is of great importance for confirming the clinical diagnosis of XLH, conducting genetic counseling, and facilitating prenatal intervention, especially in the case of sporadic patients.

Low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 2 gene (LRP2) is located next to the genomic region showing suggestive linkage with both hip and wrist bone mineral density (BMD) phenotypes. LRP2 knockout mice showed severe vitamin D deficiency and bone disease, indicating the involvement of LRP2 in the preservation of vitamin D metabolites and delivery of the precursor to the kidney for the generation of 1α,25(OH)(2)D(3). In order to investigate the contribution of LRP2 gene polymorphisms to the variation of BMD in Chinese population, a total of 330 Chinese female-offspring nuclear families with 1088 individuals and 400 Chinese male-offspring nuclear families with 1215 individuals were genotyped at six tagSNPs of the LRP2 gene (rs2389557, rs2544381, rs7600336, rs10210408, rs2075252 and rs4667591). BMD values at the lumbar spine 1-4 (L1-4) and hip sites were measured by DXA. The association between LRP2 polymorphisms and BMD phenotypes was assessed by quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests (QTDTs) in female- and male-offspring nuclear families separately. In the female-offspring nuclear families, rs2075252 and haplotype GA of rs4667591 and rs2075252 were identified in the nominally significant total association with peak BMD at L1-4; however, no significant within-family association was found between peak BMD at the L1-4 and hip sites and six tagSNPs or haplotypes. In male-offspring nuclear families, neither the six tagSNPs nor the haplotypes was in total association or within-family association with the peak BMD variation at the L1-4 and hip sites by QTDT analysis. Our findings suggested that the polymorphisms of LRP2 gene is not a major factor that contributes to the peak BMD variation in Chinese population.

Carya luana sp. nov., a new species of Juglandaceae from Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is easily distinguished from other Carya species by having lanceolate leaflets and obovate fruits with a 4-6 mm thick husk, but is otherwise morphologically close to C. tonkinensis and C. kweichowensis. Based on phylogenetic reconstruction of whole plastomes, C. luana is the sister of C. tonkinensis, while formed a clade with C. tonkinensis and C. hunanensis on ITS. A morphometric analysis demonstrate that C. luana, C. tonkinensis and C. kweichowensis are morphologically distinct. The conservation status of C. luana is assessed as Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. A new identification key to all Asian Carya species is provided. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress play multiple roles in hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we analyzed the crosstalk between AFP and ER stress in human hepatoma cells. We induced ER stress in human hepatoma cell lines (HepG2 and SK-Hep1 cells) with thapsigargin (TG, an ER stress inducer), and mitigated ER stress with 4-phenyl- butyrate acid (4-PBA, an ER stress inhibitor). AFP expression was knocked down by AFP short hairpin RNA and rescued by the pCI-AFP vector. AFP expression and ER stress were examined, and their roles in apoptosis, necroptosis, and proliferation were analyzed. TG significantly induced ER stress, apoptosis, necroptosis, and intracellular AFP protein levels, and reduced proliferation and AFP mRNA expression as well as supernatant AFP protein levels in HepG2 and SK-Hep1 cells. 4-PBA pretreatment partially reversed those changes in HepG2 cells. By contrast to AFP overexpression, knockdown of AFP significantly exacerbated TG-induced ER stress, apoptosis, and necroptosis, and decreased proliferation and the expression of activating transcription factor 6 alpha. In conclusion, ER stress causes the accumulation of AFP protein, which may be related to the reduction of AFP secretion. Accumulated AFP mitigates apoptosis and necroptosis and restores the proliferation of hepatoma cells by reducing ER stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim:To investigate the effect of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) gene polymorphisms on bone and obesity phenotypes in young Chinese men.Methods:A total of 1244 subjects from 411 Chinese nuclear families were genotyped by using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique at the Q89R, N740N, and A1330V sites in the LRP5 gene. Bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine and the hip, total fat mass and total lean mass were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The association between LRP5 gene polymorphisms and peak BMD, body mass index (BMI), total fat mass, total lean mass and percentage of fat mass was assessed using a quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT).Results:No significant within-family associations were found between genotypes or haplotypes of the LRP5 gene and peak BMD, BMI, total fat mass, total lean mass and percentage of fat mass. The 1000 permutations that were subsequently simulated were in agreement with these within-family association results.Conclusion:Our results suggest that common polymorphic variations of the LRP5 gene do not influence peak bone mass acquisition and obesity phenotypes in young Chinese men. AbstractAim:To determine the associations between HOXD4 gene polymorphisms with peak bone mineral density (BMD) throughing measuring three tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagSNPs), including rs1867863, rs13418078, and rs4972504, in HOXD4.Methods:Four hundred Chinese nuclear families with male offspring (1215 subjects) and 401 Chinese nuclear families with female offspring (1260 subjects) were recruited. BMD of the lumbar spine 1-4 (L1-4) and left proximal femur including total hip and femoral neck were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT) was performed to investigate the association among the tagging SNPs, haplotypes and peak BMD.Results:Only the CC genotype was identified in rs13418078 in the Chinese population, unlike other populations. We failed to find significant within-family association among these SNPs, haplotypes and peak BMD at any bone site in either male- or female-offspring nuclear families.Conclusion:The results suggest that genetic polymorphisms in HOXD4 may not be a major contributor to the observed variability in peak BMD in the lumbar spine and the hip in Chinese men and women. Background: The Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway plays an important role in skeletal development. Polymorphisms of frizzled-related protein (FRZB), an antagonist of this pathway, may generate variations in bone mineral density (BMD). In this study, we analyzed the association between FRZB genotypes and peak BMD variation in the spines and hips of two relatively large samples of Chinese female-offspring and male-offspring nuclear families. Methods: We recruited 1,260 subjects from 401 female-offspring nuclear families and 1,296 subjects from 427 male-offspring nuclear families and genotyped four tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagSNPs) (rs6433993, rs409238, rs288324, and rs4666865) spanning the entire FRZB gene. The SNPs rs288326 and rs7775, which are associated with hip osteoarthritis, were not selected in this study because of their low minor allele frequencies (MAFs) in Chinese people. The quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT) was used to analyze the association between each SNP and haplotype with peak BMD in female- and male-offspring nuclear families. Results: In the female-offspring nuclear families, we found no evidence of an association between either single SNPs or haplotypes and peak BMD in the spine or hip. In the male-offspring nuclear families, no within-family association was observed for either SNPs or haplotypes, although a significant total association was found between rs4666865 and spine BMD (P = 0.0299). Conclusion: Our results suggest that natural variation in FRZB is not a major contributor to the observed variability in peak BMD in either Chinese females or males. Because ethnic differences in the FRZB genotypes may exist, other studies in different population are required to confirm such results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractAim:The goal of this study was to determine whether polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) genes are associated with variations of peak bone mineral density (BMD) and obesity phenotypes in young Chinese men.Methods:A total of 1215 subjects from 400 Chinese nuclear families were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and allele-specific multiple PCR (ASM-PCR) analysis at the ApaI, FokI, and CDX2 sites in the VDR gene and the PvuII and XbaI sites in the ESR1 gene. BMD at the lumbar spine and hip, total fat mass, and total lean mass were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The associations between VDR and ESR1 gene polymorphisms with peak BMD, body mass index (BMI), total fat mass, total lean mass, and percentage fat mass (PFM) were determined using quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests (QTDTs).Results:Using QTDTs, no significant within-family associations were obtained between genotypes or haplotypes of the VDR and ESR1 genes and peak BMD. For the obesity phenotypes, the within-family associations were significant between CDX2 genotypes and BMI (P=0.046), fat mass (P=0.004), and PFM (P=0.020). Further, PvuII was significantly associated with the variation of fat mass and PFM (P=0.002 and P=0.039, respectively). A subsequent 1000 permutations were in agreement with these within-family association results.Conclusion:Our findings showed that VDR and ESR1 polymorphisms were associated with total fat mass in young Chinese men, but we failed to find a significant association between VDR and ESR1 genotypes and peak BMD. AbstractAim:A previous study showed that individuals of Japanese descent affected by early onset familial Paget's disease of bone (PDB) carried a 27-bp duplication at position 75 (75dup27) in the TNFRSF11A gene encoding RANK. Here we report the identification of a novel mutation (78dup27) in exon 1 of TNFRSF11A in a Chinese family with early onset PDB.Methods:We conducted clinical and genetic studies in a non-consanguineous Chinese family with early onset PDB. The entire coding region of TNFRSF11A was amplified and directly sequenced directly.Results:A novel 27-bp duplication in exon 1 (78dup27) in TNFRSF11A was found in four affected individuals and one asymptomatic individual. Although this duplication was the same length as the previously identified mutation (27 bp, from bases 78 to 104), in our patients the nine duplicated amino acids in the RANK signal peptide were LLLLCALLA. The phenotypes of affected individuals in this family overlapped with both early onset PDB and classic PDB, but several distinguishing features were found in our patients. The key difference between our familial PDB and the Japanese early onset PDB was the age of onset, which in most of our patients was during their late 20s (except for the propositus' niece). Aim: Osteoclastic activity is mainly assessed by measurement of urinary markers ( eg C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides of type I collagen, N-terminal cross-linked telopeptides of type I collagen etc), the levels of which could often be affected by renal clearance. Recently, serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP5b) has been used as an alternative serum marker to evaluate osteoclastic activity. We investigated the age-related changes of TRACP5b level and its association with bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese women. Methods: Seven-hundred and twenty-two Chinese mainland women aged 20–79 years were recruited in the study. Serum TRACP5b level was measured using immunoassay to evaluate the state of bone resorption. Bone mineral density (BMD) (g/cm2) at lumbar spine 1–4 and proximal femur were measured by duel-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results: The serum TRACP5b level reached a bottom value in premenopausal women aged 30–39, gradually increased in women aged 40–49, rapidly rose in women aged 50–59, and culminated with a maximum value in women aged 60–69 before a slow drop in women aged 70–79. The average level of TRACP5b was significantly higher in postmenopausal women [(3.29±1.07) U/L] than in premenopausal women ([1.70±0.59] U/L). The levels of TRACP5b were inversely correlated with BMD at all measured sites ( P<0.001). Furthermore, the level of TRACP5b was obviously higher in women with osteoporosis and osteopenia than those with normal bone mass ( P<0.001). Conclusion: We have established the reference values of serum TRACP5b in Chinese mainland women, and found that postmenopausal women had higher TRACP5b concentration than younger women. Aim: To assess the contribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and haplotypes in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ co-activator-1 (PPARGC1) and adiponectin genes to normal bone mineral density (BMD) variation in healthy Chinese women and men. Methods: We performed population-based (ANOVA) and family-based (quantitative trait locus transmission disequilibrium test) association studies of PPARGC1 and adiponectin genes. SNP in the 2 genes were genotyped. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in the lumbar spine and hip in 401 nuclear families with a total of 1260 subjects, including 458 premenopausal women, 20–40 years of age; 401 post-menopausal women (mothers), 43–74 years of age; and 401 men (fathers), 49–76 years of age. Results: Significant within-family association was found between the Thr394Thr polymorphism in the PPGAGC1 gene and peak BMD in the femoral neck ( P=0.026). Subsequent permutations were in agreement with this significant within-family association result ( P=0.016), but Thr394Thr SNP only accounted for 0.7% of the variation in femoral neck peak BMD. However, no significant within-family association was detected between each SNP in the adiponectin gene and peak BMD. Although no significant association was found between BMD and SNP in the PPARGC1 and adiponectin genes in both men and postmenopausal women, haplotype 2 (T-T) in the adiponectin gene was associated with lumbar spine BMD in postmenopausal women ( P=0.019). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that Thr394Thr SNP in the PPARGC1 gene was associated with peak BMD in the femoral neck in Chinese women. Aim: To establish bone mineral density (BMD) reference database in healthy Chinese men of Han ethnicity, and to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis in the population. Methods: The BMD in the lumbar spine 1-4 (L1-4) and proximal femur was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in a total of 1 385 healthy Chinese men of Han ethnicity aged 20–89 years old in Shanghai. Results: The highly significant negative correlation between age and BMD at any sites of proximal femur was found in the studied population, wheras no correlation between age and BMD at lumbar spine was observed. The peak BMD of the lumbar spine and any sites of hip in Chinese men was defined as the mean BMD for the subjects aged 20–39 years. According to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, the BMD cut-off values for osteoporosis of the L1-4, total hip, femoral neck, trochanter and intertrochanter in Chinese men are 0.719, 0.638, 0.575, 0.437 and 0.725 g/cm2, respectively. Using the current Chinese reference data, the prevalence of osteoporosis at the L1-4, total hip, femoral neck, trochanter and intertrochanter is 5.4%, 3.8%, 6.3%, 1.8% and 2.8% in 1 084 men aged 50 years or older, respectively. However, using a database for US non-Hispanic white men (NHANES III), the prevalence of osteoporosis or osteopenia at any sites of the hip was significantly higher than that while using the current Chinese reference data. Conclusion: The BMD reference database was established in healthy Chinese men of Han ethnicity, and will facilitate more accurate diagnosis of osteoporosis in Chinese men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the possible association of Q89R, N740N and A1330V polymorphisms in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) gene with bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal Chinese women. Q89R, N740N and A1330V genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) in 647 unrelated healthy postmenopausal Han Chinese women aged 43–76 years in Shanghai. BMD at lumbar spine 1–4 and the left proximal femur including the femoral neck, trochanter and Ward's triangle were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptionmetry in all subjects. The distribution of the Q89R, N740N and A1330V genotypes in this population was as follows: QQ 80.5%, QR 18.7%, and RR 0.8%; TT 66.9%, TC31.1%, and CC2.0%;AA 68.0%, AV 29.7%, and W 2.3%. The frequencies of the Q89R, N740N and A1330V genotypes and alleles did not deviate from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We found that the Q89R and A1330V polymorphisms were in linkage disequilibrium in our population (χ2=13.50, P<0.01). Both before and after adjusting for age, years since menopause, height, and weight, the Q89R or N740N genotypes were significantly associated with BMD at the femoral neck ( P<0.05). Subjects with the Q89R QQ genotype or the N740N TT genotype had a significantly higher BMD at the femoral neck, compared with those with the QR/RR or TC/CC genotypes, respectively. No significant association was found between A1330V polymorphism and BMD at any site. We report the detection of a double planetary system around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 47366 from precise radial-velocity measurements at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Xinglong Station, and Australian Astronomical Observatory. The star is a K1 giant with a mass of 1.81 ± 0.13 M⊙, a radius of 7.30 ± 0.33 R⊙, and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum masses of and , orbital periods of days and days, and eccentricities of and , respectively, which are derived by a double Keplerian orbital fit to the radial-velocity data. The system adds to the population of multi-giant-planet systems with relatively small orbital separations, which are preferentially found around evolved intermediate-mass stars. Dynamical stability analysis for the system revealed, however, that the best-fit orbits are unstable in the case of a prograde configuration. The system could be stable if the planets were in 2:1 mean-motion resonance, but this is less likely, considering the observed period ratio and eccentricity. A present possible scenario for the system is that both of the planets have nearly circular orbits, namely the eccentricity of the outer planet is less than ∼0.15, which is just within 1.4σ of the best-fit value, or the planets are in a mutually retrograde configuration with a mutual orbital inclination larger than 160°. Purpose: To analyse and compare the clinical effects and safety of capecitabine and tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil (S-1) in the treatment of advanced breast carcinoma. Methods: Eighty-four metastatic breast cancer elderly patients for whom first or second-line treatment had failed, were selected from among those admitted to the oncology ward of Binjiang People's Hospital, China between January 2014 and June 2015. They were randomly divided into S-1 group (n = 41) and capecitabine group (n = 41) and received varying doses of those drugs according to body surface area. Clinical effects, progression-free survival, and incidence of adverse reactions were compared for the two groups following treatment. Results: Disease control rate (CR) in S-1 group was 55.6 %, much higher than 35.1 % observed for capecitabine group (p < 0.05). The disease control rate for the S-1 group was 93.7 %, also much higher than the 70.6 % found in capecitabine group. Survival analysis showed that the median survival times of the two groups did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Furthermore, some adverse reactions such as myelosuppression and lack of strength, did not differ significantly between the two groups (p > 0.05), whereas others, including leukopenia, nausea and vomiting and hand-foot syndrome were more serious and frequent in capecitabine group than in S-1 group (p < 0.05). Based on the previous study of compound liquorice microemulsion, this paper aims to prepare the compound liquorice microemulsion gel and investigate its pharmacodynamics of chronic eczema. The type, dosage and adding method of gel matrix, and formula dosage of humectant were optimized by single factor method to obtain the formula and preparation technique of the gel. With glycyrrhizic acid, glycyrrhetin and oxymatrine used as evaluation indexes, the Franz diffusion cell method was adopted to monitor the in vitro release profile of the gel. Eczema model of delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice was chosen to detect the ear swelling rate, degree of inflammatory cell infiltration of ear pieces, and pathological changes of ear pieces, so as to investigate the therapeutic effect of the microemulsion gel. The preparation process of the compound liquorice microemulsion gel was stable. The release of glycyrrhizin and oxymatrine was most consistent with the Hixcon-Crowell kinetic model, while the release of glycyrrhizic acid was most consistent with the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model. The pharmacodynamics studies proved that compound liquorice microemulsion gel could significantly reduce the ear swelling rate in mice, with good anti-inflammatory effect as well as the ability to resist the pathological changes of chronic eczema and inhibit the infiltration of dermal inflammatory cells. Therefore, the preparation process of compound liquorice microemulsion gel is feasible, with stable drug release and a significant therapeutic effect on chronic eczema.

To explore the potential of &quot;physical property model&quot; based on the concept of quality by design(QbD),during the application of process analysis technology(PAT) in the concentration process. The Carthami Flos was used as a model drug. Firstly, the total flavonoid retention rate and the hydroxysafflor yellow A(HSYA) retention rate of the concentrated solution were used as indicators to determine the concentration temperature range of the Carthami Flos extract. Then different concentrations were prepared at the optimal concentration temperature, and the corresponding viscosity(η) and electrical conductivity(σ) at different concentrations and temperatures were measured. Data processing software such as Excel, 1 stOpt, SPSS, and MATLAB were used to establish Carthami Flos extract's mathematical model of physical parameters: ρ-C, η-C, η-T, η-C-T, σ-T, σ-C-T. The results showed that the best concentration temperature of the Carthami Flos extract should not exceed 60 ℃, and the R~2 of the exponential equation and Arrhenius equation established based on physical parameters was all greater than 0.9, indicating that such model had better predictive ability. This study has initially proved the feasibility of using the physical property model as the core of the research idea in application of PAT for intelligent quality control of traditional Chinese medicine concentration links, providing a reference for the online intelligent monitoring of concentration steps of traditional Chinese medicine extracts.
