Accurate analysis of building energy performance necessitates methodologies that can diagnose the thermal performance of a building's envelope. The building envelope contains various uncertainties and poses difficulties in verifying the measurement results, making it crucial to ensure the reliability of the measurement method. This study used dynamic simulations to verify the accuracy and reproducibility of commonly used field measurement methods. The simulation data were applied to the heat flux meter (HFM) and infrared thermography (IRT) methods to calculate the thermal transmittance of the building envelope and confirm their suitability as a field measurement method. According to the accuracy verification results, the HFM and indoor IRT (IRTi) methods, which are less affected by the external environment, evaluated the actual thermal performance of the wall close to the theoretical value with average relative errors of 3.3% and 4.2%, respectively. In the reproducibility evaluation, the HFM method exhibited similar levels of deviation over time. Additionally, to reduce the deviation in the reproducibility of the thermal transmittance derived from the IRT method, the average method was applied for data analysis, leading to a decrease in the reproducibility deviation from 36.5% to 13.3% for IRTi and from 107.3% to 71.8% for IRT outdoors (IRTo).

Ground heat accumulation caused by imbalanced heating and cooling loads in a building can cause the heat-source temperature to increase as the operating age of a geothermal heat pump (GHP) system increases. An alternative system to improve upon this situation is the hybrid GHP system. This study reviews existing research on GHP systems and hybrid GHP systems, variable water flow (VWF) control, and coefficient of performance (COP) prediction. Generally, constant flow control is applied to the circulating pump to provide a flow rate according to the maximum load. The need for VWF control was identified because the hybrid GHP system is used mainly as a heating and cooling heat source system for partial loads rather than the entire building load. Previous studies on predicting the COPs of GHP systems developed prediction models by selecting input values based on mathematical models, collecting data through multiple measurement points, and utilizing data from production environments. The model can be limited by the field environment, and it is necessary to predict the COP using machine learning based on existing field monitoring data.

The refrigeration cycle of an air source heat pump system is an important information that reveals critical operating data, such as the cooling capacity, power consumption, and performance of a system during operation. Operating data, such as refrigerant pressure and enthalpy in situ, can be difficult to measure. Therefore, this study developed an in situ refrigeration cycle measurement method using the airside data of an air source heat pump. A method for measuring the refrigeration cycle is proposed using the characteristics of evaporation, compression, condensation, and expansion processes. The distance function was analyzed by normalizing the difference between the refrigerant pressure and enthalpy of the existing and proposed measurement methods. In addition, the distance function for the maximum error of the pressure and enthalpy measurement devices was analyzed and compared with the distance function of the entire data used in the evaluation. All the evaluation data had low distance function values with a maximum difference of 5%, confirming the reliability of the proposed refrigeration cycle measurement method. The power consumption and calculated COP were also evaluated using the proposed method. The Mean Bias Error (MBE) of power consumption and COP were 0.15% and 0.04%, and the coefficient of variation of root-mean-square error (CvRMSE) was 8.967% and 7.14%, respectively.

The purpose of this paper is to optimize the supply air flow rate and temperature of the variable air volume (VAV) terminal unit by artificial neural network (ANN). In general, the setpoint of the VAV terminal unit are supply air flow rate and supply air temperature. These setpoints are determined by the design value, and are calculated by the maximum indoor heating/cooling load and the ventilation requirements. The setpoints calculated based on the design value does not cause any problems in maintaining the indoor environment. However, energy consumption cannot be optimized because it is based on the maximum design value. In order to improve the existing control method, it is important to apply the setpoints according to the real time indoor conditions. The real time indoor condition can be utilized for control through prediction model. In this study, the indoor load, indoor air quality and energy consumption were predicted and used for VAV system control. In addition, the predictive model was developed with the ANN algorithm, and the process of selecting input data and optimizing the predictive model was performed. The performance of the ANN based optimal control algorithm (suggested CASE) for the VAV terminal unit in the target building was compared with those of the dual maximum control algorithm (existing CASE), one of the VAV terminal unit control algorithms. The comparison of heating season showed that the ANN based control algorithm of VAV terminal unit reduced 16.7% of supply fan energy consumption and 19.5% of reheat coil energy consumption compared to the existing CASE using the fixed setpoint.

Airflow in a multi-zone building can be a major cause of pollutant transfer, excessive energy consumption, and occupants discomfort. The key to monitoring airflows and mitigating related problems is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of pressure relationships within the buildings. This study proposes a visualization method for representing pressure distribution within a multi-zone building by using a novel pressure-sensing system. The system consists of a Master device and a couple of Slave devices that are connected with each other by a wireless sensor network. A 4-story office building and a 49-story residential building were installed with the system to detect pressure variations. The spatial and numerical mapping relationships of each zone were further determined through grid-forming and coordinate-establishing processes for the building floor plan. Lastly, 2D and 3D visualized pressure mappings of each floor were generated, illustrating the pressure difference and spatial relationship between adjacent zones. It is expected that the pressure mappings derived from this study will allow building operators to intuitively perceive the pressure variations and the spatial layouts of the zones. These mappings also make it possible for operators to diagnose the differences in pressure conditions between adjacent zones and plan a control scheme for the HVAC system more efficiently.

As global warming accelerates due to greenhouse gas emissions, more efforts are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One of the methods used to save building energy is the efficient management of building mechanical systems. The economizer control of HVAC systems is an energy-efficient measure that improves operating methods by introducing outdoor air to save cooling energy when the outdoor-air temperature is sufficiently low. When the HVAC system is operated using economizer control, cooling energy can be saved, and the set-point of the mixed-air temperature is kept constant. Several studies are being conducted on the saving of energy using economizers. Although various studies have been conducted on the control of economizers, there is insufficient research dealing with the optimal control of mixed-air temperature in economizers that consider real-time changes. Therefore, in this study, predictive model-based mixed-air temperature optimization for a single-duct VAV system was constructed. For this, an ANN (Artificial Neural Network) that could be analyzed regardless of the variables was applied to predict the load and energy consumption and a simulator was constructed for the optimized mixed air temperature of the system. The predictive model-based control was evaluated in terms of its thermal comfort and energy, along with the existing economizer control. According to the application of the optimal economizer control, the energy consumption of the building was reduced by 28.9% compared to the existing dry-bulb temperature control, and was within ±1 °C of the indoor-air temperature set point.

In a heat pump system, performance is an important indicator that should be monitored for system optimization, fault diagnosis, and operational efficiency improvement. Real-time performance measurement and monitoring during heat pump operation is difficult because expensive performance measurement devices or additional installation of various monitoring sensors required for performance calculation are required. When using a data-based machine-learning model, it is possible to predict and monitor performance by finding the relationship between input and output values through an existing sensor. In this study, the performance prediction model of the air-cooled heat pump system was developed and verified using artificial neural network, support vector machine, random forest, and K-nearest neighbor model. The operation data of the heat pump system installed in the university laboratory was measured and a prediction model for each machine-learning stage was developed. The mean bias error analysis is −3.6 for artificial neural network, −5 for artificial neural network, −7.7 for random forest, and −8.3 for K-nearest neighbor. The artificial neural network model with the highest accuracy and the shortest calculation time among the developed prediction models was applied to the Building Automation System to enable real-time performance monitoring and to confirm the field applicability of the developed model.

This study reviewed the existing studies on the types of variable air volume (VAV) terminal units, control and operation methods, prediction models, and sensor calibration methods. As a result of analyzing the existing research trends on the system type, characteristics, and control method of VAV terminal units studies such as theoretical verification and energy simulation were conducted to improve the existing control methods, reset the set value using a mathematical model, and add a monitoring sensor for the application of control methods. The mathematical model used in the study of VAV terminal unit control methods was used to derive set values for minimum air volume, supply temperature, ventilation requirements, and indoor comfort. The mathematical model has a limitation in collecting input information for professional knowledge and model development, and development of a building environment prediction model using a black box model is being studied. The VAV terminal unit system uses a sensor to control the device, and when an error occurs in the sensor, indoor comfort problems and energy waste occur. To solve this problem, sensor calibration techniques have been developed using statistical models, mathematical models, and Bayesian statistical models. The possibility of developing a method for calibrating the variable air volume terminal unit sensor using the prediction model was confirmed. In conclusion, the VAV terminal unit system is one of the most energy efficient systems. The energy saving potential of current VAV systems can still be improved through control methods, the use of predictive models, and sensor calibration methods.

The installation and operation of geothermal systems increased due to the expectation of good cooling and heating performance due to stable heat source temperatures. In actual geothermal system operations, heat source temperature rises or falls due to an imbalance of heating and cooling energy usage. Problems of source side temperature result in reduced geothermal system performance. The purpose of this study is to develop hybrid geothermal system operation technology to stabilize temperature and improve system performance by utilizing auxiliary heat source system. The auxiliary heat source system is operated by comparing the performance when operating the geothermal heat pump system alone and the performance when operating the hybrid geothermal heat pump system. The performance of a hybrid geothermal system is determined by the circulating water temperature of the geothermal system and the circulating water temperature of the auxiliary heat source system. Hybrid geothermal heat pump system performance is predicted through numerical analysis and collection of hybrid geothermal system performance data at various temperature ranges through field test. An operating method was developed using the predicted performance as the changeover operating point of the hybrid geothermal heat pump system. When applying the development and operation technology, it handled about 11% more load than the existing geothermal system operation. The addition of an auxiliary heat source increases the initial investment cost compared to the existing geothermal system, but decreases energy consumption, confirming that the initial investment cost of 15.3 years is recovered.

Accurate measurement of air flow rate is essential in automatic building control using the variable air volume (VAV) system. In order to solve the problems of the existing air flow measurement method and improve the accuracy of air flow control, this study developed a data-based multiple regression air flow prediction model. The independent variables used in the development of the predictive model were selected as the factors used for control and monitoring when operating with variable air flow rate in the existing air conditioning system. Data collection and correlation between independent variables and air flow rate of the terminal unit were analyzed. Using the IBM SPSS statistics version 25, an air flow rate prediction model was developed using multiple regression analysis. Reliability of model was evaluated by comparing the measured airflow. The relative error of −9.3% to 10.4% is shown when comparing the estimated air flow rate by the developed model with the measured air flow rate.

Building energy conservation measure (ECM) of insulation materials suitable for the domestic situation in the construction sector (passive) is established. The ECMs of insulation materials were classified into walls, roofs, and floors. Also, economic evaluation databases, which are composed of material costs, labor costs, and expenses for constructed alternatives, were built. After setting the target building and deriving the ECM list of insulation materials for the target building, the energy use evaluation and economic evaluation were performed for each constructed alternative. Based on this, the optimal building energy conservation measure of the target building was derived by applying the decision-support process.

Considerable efforts have been made to reduce the energy consumption of buildings due to the energy crisis, and, the Korean government has supported the use of renewable energy through various grants. Among the possible renewable energy sources, geothermal energy can be used regardless of the outside weather. Therefore, energy consumption can be reduced considerably in summer and winter. Despite the increasing use of renewable energy, the use of renewables has not been operating appropriately. Therefore, this study examined some of the problems of the operation of renewable energy and some possible improvements. The aim of the study is to evaluate a building containing an actual installed multi-geothermal heat pump (Multi-GHP) system, in terms of the energy efficiency. In addition, this study evaluated the present control system and the method of complex operation regarding existing heat sources systems and GHP systems through a simulation. The results can be regarded as the result of a hybrid operation method for the improvement of an existing operation. Therefore, the Multi-GHP system energy use of a hybrid operation condition of the Multi-GHP systems and the absorption (ABS) chiller-heater system was reduced compared to the operation condition of the Multi-GHP system, and the total energy consumption of the heat source equipment was reduced. The proposed operation plan was evaluated after applying the system to a building. These results showed that the efficient operation of a Multi-GHP hybrid operation method is possible. As a result, the GHP energy use of Multi-GHP systems and the ABS chiller-heater system was reduced by 30% compared to existing operation and the total energy consumption of heat source equipment was reduced by 78%.

The construction industry has made considerable energy-saving efforts in buildings, and studies of energy-savings are ongoing. Shading is used to control the solar radiation transferred through windows. Many studies have examined the position and type of shading in different countries, but few have investigated the effects of shading installation in Korea. In this study, the case of the shading installation according to the standard of Korea, and variations of the heating and cooling load in the unit area on the performance of the windows were examined. This study compared the variations of the heating and cooling load in the case of horizontal shading and the changing position of venetian blinds. This study confirmed that horizontal shading longer than the standard length in Korea saved a maximum of 13% energy consumption. This study confirmed the point of change of energy consumption by the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) variations. The exterior venetian blinds and those between glazing were unaffected by the SHGC. On the other hand, in the case of a south façade, the interior venetian blinds resulted in 24% higher energy consumption than the installation of horizontal shading in case of Window to Wall Ratio (WWR): 80%, U-value: 2.1 and SHGC: 0.4.

ECO2 (building energy efficiency rating program) and passive energy conservation measures (ECMs) were established as a basic study for targeted methodologies and decision support systems development in Korea to meet national regulations. The primary energy consumption and economic evaluation of nonresidential buildings was performed. Passive ECMs were classified as planning and performance elements. The planning elements are the window-to-wall ratio (WWR) and horizontal shading angle. The performance elements are the thermal transmittance (U-value) of the walls, roof, and floor and the U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of windows. This study focused on the window-to-wall ratio and the U-value and solar heat gain coefficient of windows. An economic efficiency database for the constructed alternatives was built; the target building was set and the Passive ECM List for the target building was derived. The energy consumption evaluation and economic evaluation were performed for each of the constructed alternatives, and a methodology for guiding energy efficiency decisions was proposed based on the performance evaluation results, and the optimal Passive ECM List for the target building was derived.

In South Korea, the evaluation criteria for installing shading devices are defined by regulations, but the standards of design methods are not clearly established. The installation of shading devices has become mandatory for some public buildings due to revised regulations. Therefore, a design of horizontal shading device is required, and indoor environmental problems which may occur due to their installation should also be taken into consideration. This research aimed to propose a design which takes into account the energy consumption which may occur if the horizontal shading device is installed and suggests an improved design method of horizontal shading devices when they are installed. Consequently, it was confirmed that as the protrusion of the horizontal shading device becomes longer, the incoming daylight is reduced and the indoor intensity of illumination becomes lower, and thus more lighting energy may be consumed in a room where the shading device is installed than in the one where it is not. Therefore, annual energy consumption was calculated by applying the lighting control and it was found that the total energy consumption decreased by the reduction of air-conditioning and fans and lighting energy consumption.

As the global energy trend continues, the importance of energy savings and efficient use is being emphasized, and the installation and operation of geothermal heat pump systems is increasing. In many buildings, where an actual geothermal heat pump system has been installed, problems of efficiency deterioration occur frequently because of the inefficient operation after installation of the heat pump system. The purpose of this study was to develop and verify the operating method for energy saving and performance improvement of multiple geothermal systems. A coefficient of performance (COP) prediction model using an artificial neural network for real-time COP predictions was developed. The operating method of a multi-geothermal heat pump system using a variable water flow rate control method and COP prediction model was developed. The geothermal heat pump system operates sequentially depending on the water flow rate of the circulation pump. The COP prediction model enabled real-time performance prediction during system operation. The circulation water flow rate was reduced by up to 29% compared to the existing operating method. Approximately 23% of the energy was saved. The COP system, including the consumption power of the circulation pump, was improved.

A constant minimum airflow rate is used in conventional Single Duct Variable Air Volume Terminal Box control sequences. This control sequence can cause occupant discomfort or use excessive energy under partial load conditions. If the minimum airflow rate is higher than required; terminal boxes will have significantly more simultaneous heating and cooling; and AHUs will consume more fan power. Buildings will have indoor air quality problems if the minimum airflow rate is less than required. Many engineers and researchers have investigated advanced variable air volume terminal box control algorithms without a system retrofit for thermal comfort; indoor air quality and energy savings. In this study a developed control system with variable minimum airflow rate for Single Duct Variable Air Volume Terminal Boxes was applied and validated using an actual building and evaluated for comfort; indoor air quality and energy consumption. The energy consumption and thermal performance of terminal boxes using the conventional and proposed control algorithms were compared.

Achieving energy efficiency by improving the operating method of the system used in existing buildings is attracting considerable attention. The Building Design Criteria for Energy Saving was established to induce energy saving design in the domestic construction field, and the introduction of a free-cooling system, such as an economizer system, as an item of the mechanical sector, was evaluated. The economizer is an energy saving method that reduces the building load by introducing outdoor air through damper control according to the indoor and outdoor conditions. The system consists of dry-bulb temperature control and enthalpy control and the mixed air temperature is kept constant in the conventional economizer controls. On the other hand, in dry-bulb temperature control, when the set value of the mixed air temperature is changed according to the load, additional energy savings are expected compared to the conventional control method. Therefore, this paper proposes an economizer control that makes the mixed air temperature variable according to the load in a Constant Air Volume single duct system. For this, a load prediction is needed and an Artificial Neural Network is used for the load prediction. In addition, the relationship between the mixed air temperature and energy were analyzed using the BIN method and TRNSYS 17. Based on the results of previous analysis, a control method which predicting the load using Artificial Neural Network and controlling the mixed air temperature according to the predicted load in the dry-bulb temperature control of a Constant Air Volume single duct system is proposed and the proposed control was applied to the dynamic simulation program and compared with the conventional control. The results show that the temperature of each room was 21–23 °C in summer and 22.5–26 °C in winter when the economizer was controlled using the proposed control method and the energy consumption analysis showed that 19% of the energy was reduced compared to the conventional method when the proposed method was controlled.

As policies for energy efficiency of buildings are being actively implemented, building energy performance improvement is urgently required. However, in Korea, information on measures and technologies for building energy efficiency is dispersed and concrete methods are not established, making it difficult to apply effective measures. Therefore, it is required to apply and evaluate energy efficiency measures through database construction integrating diverse information. In this study, the energy efficiency measures in the architectural sector that satisfy domestic legal standards are built. Because of the economic evaluation is necessary for the constructed alternatives, an economic efficiency database was established. The target building was set up, and energy efficiency measures were derived. In addition, a methodology that can induce energy efficient decision making of buildings was proposed, and the energy use evaluation and the economic analysis for each of the alternatives derived from applying the methodology to the target building were carried out. Furthermore, the optimal energy efficiency measures for the target building were suggested through the application of the decision-making process.

The Korean government is fostering a renewable energy industry as a means of handling the energy crisis. Among the renewable energy systems available, geothermal energy has been highlighted as highly efficient, safely operable and relatively unaffected by outdoors air conditions. Despite the increasing use of renewable energy, the devices using renewables may not be operating appropriately. This study examined current problems in the operation of a geothermal heat pump (GHP) system. The efficiency of a geothermal heat pump system to studied to maximize the operation plan. Our study modelled the target building and analyzed the energy using TRNSYS, which is a dynamic energy simulation tool, to apply the coefficient of performance (COP) and evaluate the operation method. As a result, the GHP total energy consumption from the COP control method was reduced by 46% compared to the current operation. The proposed control method was evaluated after applying the system to a building. The results showed that efficient operation of a geothermal heat pump system is possible.

The objective of this study was to propose a control method with a ventilation requirement of variable air volume (VAV) system in multi-zone. In order to control the VAV system inmulti-zone, it is essential to control the terminal unit installed in each zone. A VAV terminal unit with conventional control method using a fixed minimum air flow can cause indoor air quality (IAQ) issues depending on the variation in the number of occupants. This research proposes a control method with a ventilation requirement of the VAV terminal unit and AHU inmulti-zone. The integrated control method with an air flow increase model in the VAV terminal unit, AHU, and outdoor air intake rate increase model in the AHU was based on the indoor CO2 concentration. The conventional and proposed control algorithms were compared through a TRNSYS simulation program. The proposed VAV terminal unit control method satisfies all the conditions of indoor temperature, IAQ, and stratification. An energy comparison with the conventional control method showed that the method satisfies not only the indoor thermal comfort, IAQ, and stratification issue, but also reduces the energy consumption. Common energy management control systems (EMCS) in building HVAC systems could be made much more energy efficient without sacrificing comfort. Most researchers have focused on implementing optimal control algorithms in Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems with EMC functions. Previous studies have paid little attention to using terminal box EMC functions integrated with main AHU (Air Handling Unit) systems. Terminal boxes with EMCS may cause occupant discomfort and waste excessive energy if they do not have the proper operation control functions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of energy consumption and estimate building energy savings on the optimal minimum air flow of single duct VAV terminal boxes and develop applicable optimal terminal box control algorithms for EMCS. This paper presents a dynamic model of a VAV terminal box with hydronic reheat, develops optimal terminal box control algorithms and applies the developed EMCS algorithms to an actual building. The results of this study show that optimal terminal box control algorithms can stably maintain the set room air temperature and reduce energy consumption for varying heating loads compared to conventional control algorithms. Terminal boxes maintain room temperature by modulating supply air temperature and airflow in building heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Terminal boxes with conventional control sequences often supply inadequate airflow to a conditioned space, resulting in occupant discomfort, or provide excessive airflow that wastes significant reheat energy. In this study, the procedure for the optimal minimum airflow setpoint was developed to improve thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption. The determined minimum airflow setpoint was applied in an office building air-conditioning system. Improvements in indoor thermal comfort and energy reduction were verified through measurement. The results show that the minimum airflow reset can stably maintain room temperature, satisfy comfort standards and reduce energy consumption compared with the conventional control. Building energy codes are key policy tools for improving building energy efficiency by defining the minimum requirement for the energy performance of new buildings. In Korea, the building energy code was focused on prescriptive criteria for a long time but is now gradually introducing performance criteria. However, switching to performance criteria is not straightforward because of the resistance of the market to abandoning the well-consolidated prescriptive criteria. The objective of this study is to derive appropriate measures to strengthen the prescriptive criteria and the performance criteria, considering both the energy-saving effect and the economic efficiency for new office buildings and educational buildings to increase the market acceptance of the building energy codes. To this end, the energy-saving effects of reference buildings resulting from the reinforcement of the prescriptive criteria in the past have been first analyzed. Then, based on the collected energy performance parameters and cost data, the economic efficiency relative to the energy saving deriving from the application of passive and active energy conservation measures (ECMs) were analyzed, and future building energy code’s reinforcement measures were derived.
