Abstract Currently, there is a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in complex multimedia urban environmental systems. Taking Urumqi City as a case study, we developed an integrated multimedia urban environmental model to simulate the inter-media transport processes of PAHs across air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation, and impervious surfaces. The predictive results of this model were in good agreement with the actual monitoring data from 2021, confirming its accuracy. Notably, the simulated data for 2021 indicate that the total amount of PAHs in the soil reached 1.06 × 106 kg, accounting for 97.44% of the total PAHs in Urumqi City, highlighting soil as the primary sink for PAHs. Further analysis of transport fluxes revealed that atmospheric transfer pathways to soil and vegetation are the main mechanisms driving the distribution of PAHs in urban environments. Additionally, sensitivity analysis identified temperature, soil, and vegetation-related parameters as the primary factors influencing PAHs. Based on the simulated concentration, the risk assessment results showed that soil PAHs had a higher risk of carcinogenesis to human body. This study deepens our understanding of the behavior of PAHs in urban environments and provides insights into how human activities affect the fate and transformation of these contaminants in multimedia urban systems.

IntroductionRetinal diseases significantly impact patients’ quality of life and increase social medical costs. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers high-resolution imaging for precise detection and monitoring of these conditions. While deep learning techniques have been employed to extract features from OCT images for classification, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) often fail to capture global context due to their focus on local receptive fields. Transformer-based methods, on the other hand, suffer from quadratic complexity when handling long-range dependencies.MethodsTo overcome these limitations, we introduce the Multi-Resolution Visual Mamba (MRVM) model, which addresses long-range dependencies with linear computational complexity for OCT image classification. The MRVM model initially employs convolution to extract local features and subsequently utilizes the retinal Mamba to capture global dependencies. By integrating multi-scale global features, the MRVM enhances classification accuracy and overall performance. Additionally, the multi-directional selection mechanism (MSM) within the retinal Mamba improves feature extraction by concentrating on various directions, thereby better capturing complex, orientation-specific retinal patterns.ResultsExperimental results demonstrate that the MRVM model excels in differentiating retinal images with various lesions, achieving superior detection accuracy compared to traditional methods, with overall accuracies of 98.98\% and 96.21\% on two public datasets, respectively.DiscussionThis approach offers a novel perspective for accurately identifying retinal diseases and could contribute to the development of more robust artificial intelligence algorithms and recognition systems for medical image-assisted diagnosis.

Summary: Foodborne illness caused by consuming foods contaminated by pathogens remains threating to the public health. Despite considerable efforts of using renewable source materials, it is highly demanding to fabricate food packaging with multiple properties including eco-friendliness, bactericidal effect and biocompatibility. Here, sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were used as functional filler and structure components, respectively, on the cellulose nanofibers (CNFs)-based films, which endows the produced membrane (CNF/SL-ZnO) the UV-light blocking, antioxidant, and antimicrobial characteristics. Due to the interconnected polymeric structure, the prepared CNF/SL-ZnO films possessed considerable mechanical properties, thermal stability, and good moisture barrier capability. Moreover, the tested samples exhibited an improved shelf life in food packaging. Furthermore, metagenome analysis revealed superior biodegradability of obtained films with negligible side effect on the soil microenvironment. Therefore, the biocompatible, degradable, and antibacterial CNF/SL-ZnO film holds enormous potential for sustainable uses including food packaging.

The incorporation of aquaculture feed within a rice–crayfish coculture system significantly enhances nitrogen cycling, thereby diminishing the reliance on chemical fertilizers. However, this benefit is often overlooked in practice, and farmers continue to use large quantities of chemical fertilizers to maximize production, resulting in excessive soil fertility and water nitrogen pollution. Thus, avoiding nitrogen pollution in rice–crayfish coculture systems has become a pressing issue. In this study, we conducted a two-year experiment with two rice cultivars, and a 33.3% reduction in nitrogen fertilizer in a rice–crayfish coculture system (RC), to systematically analyze the overall nitrogen balance, rice nitrogen nutrition, and soil fertility, as compared with a rice monoculture system (RM). Our findings revealed the following: (1) Under the 33.3% reduction in nitrogen fertilizer, the nitrogen surplus in the rice–crayfish coculture system was comparable to that in the rice monoculture, and was controlled at an environmental safety level. (2) Nitrogen utilization efficiency and the accumulation of nitrogen in the rice–crayfish coculture were comparable to those in the rice monoculture. The nitrogen cycle in this system was able to provide the nitrogen required for rice growth after nitrogen fertilizer reduction. (3) The rice–crayfish coculture significantly improved the overall soil fertility and the effectiveness of soil nitrogen nutrition. Furthermore, cutting off the application of nitrogen fertilizer after the mid-tillering stage effectively controlled the total nitrogen content in soil after rice maturity. In conclusion, reducing nitrogen fertilizer in a rice–crayfish coculture system is feasible and beneficial. It ensures rice production, reduces the risk of excessive nitrogen surplus and surface pollution, and promotes a greener, more environmentally friendly paddy field ecosystem.

IntroductionThe blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal derived from functional neuroimaging is commonly used in brain network analysis and dementia diagnosis. Missing the BOLD signal may lead to bad performance and misinterpretation of findings when analyzing neurological disease. Few studies have focused on the restoration of brain functional time-series data.MethodsIn this paper, a novel U-shaped convolutional transformer GAN (UCT-GAN) model is proposed to restore the missing brain functional time-series data. The proposed model leverages the power of generative adversarial networks (GANs) while incorporating a U-shaped architecture to effectively capture hierarchical features in the restoration process. Besides, the multi-level temporal-correlated attention and the convolutional sampling in the transformer-based generator are devised to capture the global and local temporal features for the missing time series and associate their long-range relationship with the other brain regions. Furthermore, by introducing multi-resolution consistency loss, the proposed model can promote the learning of diverse temporal patterns and maintain consistency across different temporal resolutions, thus effectively restoring complex brain functional dynamics.ResultsWe theoretically tested our model on the public Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset, and our experiments demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms existing methods in terms of both quantitative metrics and qualitative assessments. The model's ability to preserve the underlying topological structure of the brain functional networks during restoration is a particularly notable achievement.ConclusionOverall, the proposed model offers a promising solution for restoring brain functional time-series and contributes to the advancement of neuroscience research by providing enhanced tools for disease analysis and interpretation.

The disruption and reconstruction of the TREM2+ tissue resident macrophage (TRM) barrier on the surface of synovial lining play a key role in the activation and "remission" of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which engender the prediction of this immunologic barrier as a potential driver for the achievement of "cure" in RA. However, strategies to promote the reconstruction of this barrier have not been reported, and the effect of patching this barrier remains unidentified. On the other hand, appropriate piezoelectric stimulation can reprogram macrophages, which has never been exerted on this barrier TRM yet. Herein, we design piezoelectric tetragonal BaTiO3 (BTO) ultrasound-driven nanorobots (USNRs) by the solvothermal synthesis method, which demonstrates satisfactory electro-mechanical conversion effects, paving the way to generate controllable electrical stimulation under ultrasound to reprogram the barrier TRM by minimally invasive injection into joint cavity. It is demonstrated that the immunologic barrier could be patched by this USNR effectively, thereby eliminating the hyperplasia of vessels and nerves (HVN) and synovitis. Additionally, TREM2 deficiency serum-transfected arthritis (STA) mice models are applied and proved the indispensable role of TREM2 in RA curing mediated by USNR. In all, our work is an interesting and important exploration to expand the classical tetragonal BTO nanoparticles in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, providing a new idea and direction for the biomedical application of piezoelectric ceramics.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is a critical colorectal cancer (CRC)-associated bacterium. DNA hunger/stationary phase protective proteins (Dps) are bacterial ferritins that protect DNA from oxidative stress. However, little is known about the regulatory roles of Fn-Dps towards host cellular functions. Here, we identified Fn-Dps from the culture supernatant of Fn by mass spectrometry, and prepared the recombinant of Fn-Dps protein. We show a novel virulence protein of Fn, Fn-Dps, which lyses and disrupts erythrocytes by the competition for iron acquisition. Also, Fn-Dps facilitates intracellular survival of Fn in macrophages by upregulating the expression of the chemokine CCL2/CCL7. In addition, Fn-Dps can elicit a strong humoral immune response, and mucosal immunization with Fn-Dps conferred protection against Fn in the intestinal tract. Moreover, a high level of anti-Fn-Dps antibody was prevalent in populations, and elevated anti-Fn-Dps antibody levels were observed in CRC patients. Furthermore, Fn-Dps promotes the migration of CRC cells via the CCL2/CCL7-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and promotes CRC metastasis in vivo. Author summary Our previous studies have found that the CRC-associated bacterium Fn is a facultative intracellular bacterium. To date, the underlying mechanism by which Fn infection induces carcinogenesis remains largely unknown. Here, our findings revealed that Fn-Dps is a novel multifunctional Fn virulence factor that lyses and disrupts erythrocytes, enhances intracellular survival of Fn in macrophages, and promotes CRC metastasis. We also found that mucosal immunization with Fn-Dps conferred protection against Fn. A high level of serum anti-Fn-Dps antibody was prevalent in populations, and elevated anti-Fn-Dps antibody levels were observed in CRC patients. These findings reveal a novel Fn virulence factor that promotes tumor progression, providing a potential novel drug target for CRC treatment.

BackgroundLipid metabolism disorders contribute to the risk factor of prostatic hyperplasia. Lipid ratios have also attracted a lot of attention. Yet, research about the correlation of lipid ratios with prostatic hyperplasia is limited. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the association of lipid ratios with the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Chinese male subjects.MethodsHealthy men who underwent routine health check-ups from January 2017 to December 2019 were recruited. Twenty-four thousand nine hundred sixty-two individuals were finally enrolled in this research. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between lipid ratios and BPH in Chinese adults.ResultsAfter health examinations for more than 2 years, 18.46% of subjects were ascertained as incident BPH cases. Higher age, body mass index (BMI), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) ratio, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly associated with BPH risk, while total cholesterol (TC) was not significant. When quartiles of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were analyzed in multivariable model, higher TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were associated with a risk of BPH (odds ratio [OR] = 2.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.89, 2.36; P-trend < 0.001; and OR = 1.67; 95% CI: 1.50, 1.85; P-trend < 0.001, respectively). In addition, stratified analyses based on the general population exhibited that with increasing age (≥35 years) the relationship of TG/HDL-C ratio with BPH risk was dominantly positive (all P-trend < 0.001, P-interaction = 0.001), and significant associations were also found in blood pressure strata and FBG strata (all P-trend < 0.001), except men with BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 were slightly weakened (OR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.41, 2.85; P-trend = 0.04). Moreover, there were significant associations between quartiles of TC/HDL-C and the risk of BPH was observed mainly in age 55–64 years, BMI 18.5–23.9 Kg/m2, blood pressure strata, and FBG strata. However, the P-value for a linear trend among those with BMI ≥ 28 Kg/m2 in which participants at the highest quartile of TC/HDL-C had an OR of 1.45 (95% CI: 1.09, 1.93) was 0.594. Additionally, higher TG/HDL-C ratio (≥0.65) may be a risk factor for BPH in China adults of different age decades (≥35 years) with normal TG and HDL-C.ConclusionsTG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were associated with BPH risk, TG/HDL-C was a powerful independent risk factor for BPH in Chinese adults, and higher TG/HDL-C ratio should be valued in male subjects with normal TG and HDL-C levels.

AimsThe present study aimed to compare the effects of left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) on cardiac function and clinical outcomes in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) >35 vs. ≤35%.Methods and ResultsThirty-six consecutive patients with LBBB and LVEF 35% group (70 ± 8 years, 9 male), the success rate was 81.0% (17/21). QRSd significantly decreased from 174 ± 23 ms to 108 ± 13 ms (P < 0.001). The pacing threshold and R-wave amplitude were 0.6 ± 0.2 V @ 0.5 ms and 12 ± 7 mV, respectively. In LVEF ≤ 35% group (69 ± 5 years, 9 male), the success rate was 73.3% (11/15) with QRSd decreasing from 188 ± 25 ms to 107 ± 11 ms (P < 0.001). The hyperresponders to LBBAP (functional recovery and LVEF ≥ 50%) in LVEF > 35% group was 52.9%, which were almost twice of that in LVEF ≤ 35% group (33.3%). Whether patients had LBBAP or left ventricular septal pacing (LVSP), patients in the LVEF > 35% group showed significantly lower incidence of heart failure hospitalizations or death from any cause (hazard ratio in LVEF > 35% group, 0.22; 95%CI, 0.06 to 0.75, P = 0.011).ConclusionsLBBAP can significantly shorten the QRSd and improve cardiac function in LBBB patients with either LVEF > 35 or ≤ 35%. LBBAP should be considered as an effective therapy for preventing the deterioration of cardiac function in early-stage heart failure patients with LBBB and LVEF > 35%.

PD-1 immune checkpoint blockade and cytokine IL-33 have shown significant therapeutic effects in tumor immunotherapy. These therapies promote CD8+ T cell activation, proliferation, and effector functions. However, there were few research about the combined therapy efficacy. In this study, we established B16-empty vector and B16-IL33 melanoma mouse models and treated with PD-1 monoclonal antibody. We reported that PD-1 blockade combined with cytokine IL-33 further inhibited tumor progression and prolonged the survival of tumor-bearing mice. Mechanistically, the combination therapy was found to further facilitate CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes accumulation, and enhance the antitumor effects of CD4+or CD8+tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes by promoting type-1 immune response within the tumor microenvironment using flow cytometry and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. Thus, PD-1 blockade combined with IL-33 has application potential in tumor immunotherapy. Further, this study provides a new promising strategy and theoretical basis for tumor combination immunotherapy.

Sustaining efficacious T cell-mediated antitumor immune responses in the tumor tissues is the key to the success of cancer immunotherapy. Current strategies leverage altering the signals T cells sense in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Checkpoint inhibitor-based approaches block inhibitory signals such as PD-1 whereas cytokine-based therapies increase the level of immune-stimulatory cytokines such as IL-2. Besides extrinsic signals, the genetic circuit within T cells also participates in determining the nature and trajectory of antitumor immune responses. Here, we showed that efficacy of the IL33-based tumor immunotherapy was greatly enhanced in mice with T cell-specific Eomes deficiency. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that Eomes deficient mice had diminished proportions of exhausted/dysfunctional CD8+ T cells but increased percentages of tissue resident and stem-like CD8+ T cells in the TME. In addition, the IFNγ+TCF1+ CD8+ T cell subset was markedly increased in the Eomes deficient mice. We further demonstrated that Eomes bound directly to the transcription regulatory regions of exhaustion and tissue residency genes. In contrast to its role in inhibiting T cell immune responses at the tumor site, Eomes promoted generation of central memory T cells in the peripheral lymphoid system and memory recall responses against tumor growth at a distal tissue site. Finally, we showed that Eomes deficiency in T cells also resulted in increased efficacy of PD-1-blockade tumor immunotherapy. In all, our study indicates that Eomes plays a critical role in restricting prolonged T cell-mediated antitumor immune responses in the TME whereas promoting adaptive immunity in peripheral lymphoid organs.

The cationic polymerizations of isobutylene (IB) initiated by an H2O/AlCl3 system were carried out in a mixture of n‐hexane/methylene dichloride of 60/40 v/v at −50 °C in the presence of various external electron pair donors (EDs), including methyl benzoate (MB), ethyl benzoate (EB), and methyl acrylate (MA). The effects of the concentrations of EDs ([ED]) and polymerization time on monomer conversion and kinetics of IB polymerization were also investigated. The complexes between AlCl3 and the esters were soluble in the polymerization system at −50 °C. The polymers with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions were obtained in the presence of the EDs. The rate of polymerization decreased with increasing [ED]. The kinetic orders of the EDs were remarkably dependent on their chemical structure, steric hindrance from moieties, and concentration in the polymerization system. The reaction order of MB was determined to be around −1.3 when [MB] ≤ 0.40 mmol/L, whereas it was −12.9 when [MB] ≥ 0.40 mmol/L. The reaction order of EB was determined to be −1.36 when [EB] ≤ 0.41 mmol/L, whereas it was −3.36 when [EB] ≥ 0.41 mmol/L. The reaction order of MA was determined to be −1.85 when [MA] ≤ 0.48 mmol/L, whereas it was −16.7 when [MA] ≥ 0.48 mmol/L. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: Three kinds of mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs) with different textures were activated by potassium hydroxide at 900°C and used as electrode materials for supercapacitor. The effects of textures of precursors on electrochemical performances of activated MCMBs were investigated. Nitrogen sorption measurements (at 77K) showed that three kinds of activated MCMBs possess high specific surface areas (>2000m2/g) and different porosity characteristics. MCMB prepared by emulsion method from bulk mesophase pitch (MCMB-e) has an irregular and distorted lamellar structure of oriented aromatic hydrocarbons. The unique texture of MCMB-e leads to the largest specific surface area (2542.8m2/g) and the highest micropore volume (0.8236cm3/g) after activation. Galvanostatic charge–discharge results showed that the activated MCMB-e has the highest specific capacitance of 326F/g at the current density of 20mA/g and better rate capability in 6M KOH electrolyte. The good capacitive behavior of the activated MCMB-e may be attributed to the high-surface area, abundant micropores, closed-packed mesopores and macropores, as well as moderate crystal structures.
