Abstract The fundamental heterotic string has a tower of BPS states whose supersymmetric index has an exponential growth in the charges. We construct the saddle-point of the gravitational path integral corresponding to this index. The saddle-point configuration is a supersymmetric rotating non-extremal Euclidean black hole. This configuration is singular in the two-derivative theory. We show that the addition of higher-derivative terms in four-dimensional N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supergravity resolves the singularity. In doing so, we extend the recently-developed “new attractor mechanism” to include the effect of higher-derivative terms. Remarkably, the one-loop, four-derivative F-term contribution to the prepotential leads to a precise match of the gravitational and microscopic index. We also comment, using the effective theory near the horizon, on the possibility of a string-size near-extremal black hole. Our results clarify the meaning of different descriptions of this system in the literature. The thermal state transitions to a winding condensate and a gas of strings without ever reaching a small black hole, while the index is captured by the rotating Euclidean black hole solution and is constant and thus smoothly connected to the microscopic ensemble.

Abstract Background Certain infectious diseases are caused by specific bacterial pathogens, including syphilis, gonorrhea, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, leprosy, and tuberculosis. These diseases significantly impact global health, contributing heavily to the disease burden. The study aims to thoroughly evaluate the global burden of syphilis, gonorrhea, typhoid and paratyphoid fever, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and leprosy. Methods Leveraging the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2021, age-specific and Socio-demographic Index (SDI)-specific incidence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and death for eight specific bacterial infections across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021 were analyzed. Percentage changes in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), DALY rate, and mortality rate (ASMR) were also examined, with a focus on disease distribution across different regions, age groups, genders, and SDI. Results By 2021, among the eight diseases, gonococcal infection had the highest global ASIR [1096.58 per 100,000 population, 95% uncertainty interval (UI): 838.70, 1385.47 per 100,000 population], and syphilis had the highest global age-standardized DALY rate (107.13 per 100,000 population, 95% UI: 41.77, 212.12 per 100,000 population). Except for syphilis and gonococcal infection, the age-standardized DALY rate of the remaining diseases decreased by at least 55% compared to 1990, with tetanus showing the largest decrease by at least 90%. Globally, significant declines in the ASIR, age-standardized DALY rate, and ASMR for these eight bacterial infections have been observed in association with increases in the SDI. Regions with lower SDI, such as sub-Saharan Africa, experienced a relatively higher burden of these eight bacterial infections. Conclusions Although there has been an overall decline in these eight diseases, they continue to pose significant public health challenges, particularly in low SDI regions. To further reduce this burden in these areas, targeted intervention strategies are essential, including multi-sectoral collaboration, policy support, improved WASH management, and enhanced research efforts. Abstract Purpose Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly impacts the quality of life in older men. However, there is lack of research on relationship between dietary niacin intake and the risk of BPH. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary niacin intake and the risk of BPH. Methods Data from the NHANES spanning 2003 to 2008 were utilized. BPH was determined using a self-report questionnaire, while dietary niacin intake was calculated based on the mean of two distinct diet interviews. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to explore the association, supplemented with restricted cubic splines and subgroup analysis. Results A total of 700 males were enrolled, of which 653 men had BPH. After adjusting for all covariates, a high dietary intake of niacin was associated with an increased risk of BPH (OR: 1.04; 95%CI: 1.01–1.07). Furthermore, when the lowest dietary niacin intake is used as the reference, the highest tertile is associated with an increased risk of BPH (OR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.24-4,42). Restricted cubic splines demonstrated a positive correlation between dietary niacin intake and BPH risk. Conclusions The study results demonstrated a positive association between dietary niacin intake and the risk of BPH in elderly men in the US. These findings underscore the importance of systematic assessment before supplementing micronutrients in elderly men.

BackgroundTestosterone deficiency (TD) is an urgent health issue that requires attention, associated with various adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and metabolic syndrome. Remnant cholesterol (RC) has emerged as a potential biomarker for cardiovascular risk, but its relationship with testosterone levels and TD has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to explore the association between RC and TD in adult American males using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).MethodsThis cross-sectional study utilized data from three NHANES cycles (2011-2016), including 2,848 adult male participants. RC was calculated as total cholesterol minus high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). TD was defined as total testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses, as well as smooth curve fitting and generalized additive models, were performed to assess the associations between RC and total testosterone levels and TD, adjusting for potential confounders. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on age, BMI, smoking status, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).ResultsHigher RC levels were significantly associated with lower total testosterone levels (β = -53.87, 95% CI: -77.69 to -30.06, p

Optimal load training is a method of training that aims to maximize power output. This is achieved by arranging optimal loads (optimal ratios of load intensity and load volume) during strength training. The fixed load intensity and number of repetitions employed in traditional strength training. The present study will investigate the applicability of these two load arrangements to female elite boxers. Twenty-four elite female boxers were divided into three groups [optimal load (OL = 8), traditional load (TL = 8) and control group (CG = 8)]. The six-week intervention consisted of strength training with different loading arrangements. The punching ability and strength were tested before and after the intervention. We found that optimal load training enhances a boxer’s punching ability and economy, which aligns with the demands of boxing and is suitable for high-level athletes, whose strength training loads require a more individualised and targeted approach.

Abstract With the onset of the 5G era, wearable flexible electronic devices have developed rapidly and gradually entered the daily life of people. However, the vast majority of research focuses on the integration of functions and performance improvement, while ignoring electromagnetic hazards caused by devices. Herein, the 3D double conductive networks are constructed through a repetitive vacuum‐assisted dip‐coating technique to decorate the 2D MXene and 1D silver nanowires on the melamine foam. Benefiting from the unique porous structure and multi‐scale interconnected frame, the resultant composite foam exhibited high electrical conductivity, low density, superb electromagnetic interference shielding (48.32 dB), and Joule heating performance (up to 90.8 °C under 0.8 V). Furthermore, a single‐electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with powerful energy harvesting capability is assembled by combining the composite foam with an ultra‐thin Ecoflex film and a polyvinylidene fluoride film. Simultaneously, the foam‐based TENG can also be considered a reliable wearable sensor for monitoring activity patterns in different parts of the human body. The versatility and scalable manufacturing of high‐performance composite foams will provide new design ideas for the development of next‐generation flexible wearable devices.

Abstract The gravitational path integral can be used to compute the number of black hole states for a given energy window, or the free energy in a thermal ensemble. In this article we explain how to use the gravitational path integral to compute the separate number of bosonic and fermionic black hole microstates. We do this by comparing the partition function with and without the insertion of (−1)F. In particular we introduce a universal rotating black hole that contributes to the partition function in the presence of (−1)F. We study this problem for black holes in asymptotically flat space and in AdS, putting constraints on the high energy spectrum of holographic CFTs (not necessarily supersymmetric). Finally, we analyze wormhole contributions to related quantities.

Abstract In this paper we revisit the double cone wormhole introduced by Saad, Shenker and Stanford (SSS), which was shown to reproduce the ramp in the spectral form factor. As a first approximation we can say that this solution computes Tr[e −iKT ], a trace of the “evolution” operator that generates Schwarzschild time translations on the two sided wormhole geometry. This point of view leads to a simple way to compute the normalization factor of the wormhole. When we have bulk matter fields, SSS suggested using a modified evolution $$\widetilde{K}$$ which involves a slightly complex geometry, so that we are really computing $${\text{Tr}}\left[{e}^{-i\widetilde{K}T}\right]$$ . We argue that, for general black holes, the spectrum of $$\widetilde{K}$$ is given by quasinormal mode frequencies. We explain that this reproduces various features that were previously predicted from the spectral form factor on hydrodynamics grounds. We also give a general algebraic construction of the modified boost in terms of operators constructed from half sided modular inclusions. For the special case of JT gravity, we work out the backreaction of matter on the geometry of the double cone and find that it deforms the geometry in an undesirable direction. We finally give some comments on the possible physical interpretation of $$\widetilde{K}$$ .

A comprehensive understanding of material deformation behavior holds importance in enhancing the properties of materials, which can be achieved through modeling the relationship between microstructure and deformation behavior by an appropriate crystal plasticity (CP) model. However, before simulations, obtaining a high-fidelity representative microstructure (RM) to simultaneously meet the efficiency and accuracy requirements of the CP model is still a challenge. Thus, taking the Al–Al2Cu eutectics as an example, we successfully obtained a high-fidelity RM with two-point statistics and some fashionable image processing techniques. Then a high-resolution RMCP model was developed and the deformation behavior of Al–Al2Cu eutectics at room temperatures was uncovered. Due to multiple activated slip systems on {111} inducing obvious cross-slip behavior, severe and heterogenous plastic deformation occurs in α-Al. And dislocations originate from the microstructure defects. In θ-Al2Cu, all possible slip systems are not activated, resulting in no plastic deformation. The predictions of the RMCP model are verified to be reliable by comparing with the results of in-situ tensile tests. Our proposed RMCP method is not only applicable to the two-phase eutectic systems, but also suitable for various multiphase and polycrystalline systems.

The metastable-stable transition and rapid coarsening of metastable D022 phase remains its Achilles hell, restricting the application of D022-strengthened alloys at service temperatures higher than 650°C. Hence, it is crucial to improve thermal stability of D022 phase. In this work, we report an 800°C-stable D022-Ni3(W0.24Ti0.38Ta0.19Nb0.19) superlattice in the Ni58Cr23Fe10W5Ti2Ta1Nb1 MEA. Experimental results and theoretical analysis showed that the exceptional thermal stability is due to Nb-sublattice occupying elements, low diffusivity of W, and extremely small lattice misfit between the D022 phase and FCC matrix. These findings shed lights on developing high-performance D022-hardened alloys capable of operating at temperatures above 650°C.

This study explores the mechanical properties of geopolymers derived from construction and demolition waste exposed to high temperatures. Geopolymers were exclusively crafted from waste bricks or ceramic tiles, activated with potassium hydroxide/sodium silicate solution. We assessed compressive deformation during 850°C − 1050°C exposure and residual strength post 600°C − 1050°C exposure (simulating ISO 834 curve). Microstructure and bulk properties were also examined.Both geopolymers exhibitecd consistent post-fire behavior. Compressive strength decreased between 600°C and 800°C but rebounded at 1050°C, surpassing initial levels. At 1050°C, density dropped by 8–9%, with a 7–10% mass loss. In fire tests, ceramic tile-based geopolymers displayed plastic deformation at all tested temperatures without macro-fractures, whereas brick-based geopolymers remained elastic up to 1000°C with evident macro-fractures.These findings suggest the potential of both geopolymers as fire-resistant building materials, contributing to advancements in construction materials.

Periodontitis, delineated by the destruction of structures that support teeth, is predominantly propelled by intricate immune responses. Immunomodulatory treatments offer considerable promise for the management of this ailment; however, the modulation of the periodontal immune microenvironment to facilitate tissue regeneration presents a substantial biomedical challenge. Herein, our study investigates the role of Wilms’ tumor 1-associating protein (WTAP), a critical m6A methyltransferase, in the immunomodulation of periodontitis and assesses its viability as a therapeutic target. We observed heightened expression of WTAP in macrophages extracted from gingival tissues impacted by periodontitis, with a strong association with M1 polarization. Via loss-of-function experiments, we demonstrated that diminishing WTAP expression precipitates a transition from M1 to M2 macrophage phenotypes amidst inflammatory conditions, thus improving the periodontal immune landscape. Further, RNA sequencing and indirect co-culture assays indicated that suppressing of WTAP expression modulates osteoimmune responses and enhances the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells. The local deployment of adeno-associated virus-shWTAP in murine models of periodontitis robustly validated the therapeutic promise of targeting WTAP in this disease. Collectively, our findings highlight the crucial role of WTAP in orchestrating macrophage-mediated osteoimmune responses and tissue regeneration in periodontitis, proposing novel avenues for immunotherapeutic interventions in its treatment.

Background This study aimed to investigate the perinatal factors and early neonatal outcomes of abnormal birth weight (ABW) in Hangzhou, China from 2015 to 2021.Methods A retrospective cohort study was designed to analyse the data of 76 847 newborns, in which the case groups included 3042 cases of low birth weight (LBW) and 2941 cases of fetal macrosomia (MAC), and 70 864 cases of normal weight were as the reference group.Results The incidence of LBW and MAC was 3.96% and 3.83% in Hangzhou, China from 2015 to 2021. Prematurity (7 days, fetal anomalies, caesarean section, pregnancy complications, maternal coinfection with pathogens and summer births would be correlated with the incidence of LBW (ORs=43.50, 7.60, 2.09, 1.89, 1.57, 1.28, 1.19 and 1.18, all p41 weeks), scarred uterus, anterior vaginal incision and gravidity ≥2 were correlated with decreased incidence of LBW, with ORs of 0.05, 0.54, 0.65 and 0.80. Moreover, caesarean delivery, post-term pregnancy (> 41 weeks), parity ≥1, lateral vaginal incision, gravidity ≥2, hospitalisation >7 days, winter births and pregnancy complications also have association with the incidence of MAC (ORs=3.92, 2.73, 2.19, 1.87, 1.22, 1.20, 1.17 and 1.13, all p7 days are associated with the odds of LBW and MAC, however, factors such as pregnancy with scarred uterus relate to the decrease of ABW. Close monitoring and intervention during pregnancy are essential to reduce the occurrence of ABW.

Abstract Background The problem of suicide has become increasingly common in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an effective treatment for MDD with 2 milliamperes (mA) for at least 30 min per day for 2 weeks. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of daily duration-doubled tDCS as an adjunctive intervention for rapidly reducing suicidal ideation and improving depression in MDD patients. Methods In this double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, 76 MDD patients with suicidal ideation are randomly assigned to either active (n=38) or sham (n=38) tDCS group. The anode and cathode are placed over the scalp areas corresponding to left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), respectively, and each stimulation lasts for 60 min. The primary outcome is defined as change of Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI) after 5 and 10 sessions. The change of other clinical assessments, blood biomarkers related to suicidal ideation and depressive sumptoms are defined as secondary outcomes. Blood biomarkers related to suicidal ideation are collected at baseline and after 10 sessions. Discussion This study suggests the adjunctive duration-doubled tDCS might be a novel method to rapidly reduce suicidal ideation and improve depressive symptom. The variation of biomarkers could be potential predictive models of suicide risk. Trial registration The trial protocol is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov under protocol registration number NCT05555927. Registered on September 25, 2022.

Abstract Introduction A prospective observational study was modified to assess the efficacy of surgery alone for the treatment of locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma. (LA-OSCC) Materials and methods This prospective, single-institution, single-arm study involved 174 patients who underwent major surgery for LA-OSCC. Participating patients did not receive postoperative radiation. After initial curative treatment, patients were routinely monitored via clinical examination and imaging. The follow-up period was 3–70 months. Tumour recurrence and death were considered as the Clinical End Point in Research. Results The 5-year overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and locoregional control rates for 174 patients were 66.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 59.8 to 73.6), 66.1% (95% CI, 59.2 to 73.0), and 82.4% (95% CI, 76.5 to 88.3), respectively. Conclusion A study of patients with LA-OSCC treated with surgery alone may have the optimal therapeutic impact for LA-OSCC, as evidenced by solid data for our next RCT trial. This conclusion still needs to be validated in higher-level RCTs.

Human–robot (HR) collaboration (HRC) is an emerging research field because of the complementary advantages of humans and robots. An HRC framework for robotic assembly based on impedance control is proposed in this paper. In the HRC framework, the human is the decision maker, the robot acts as the executor, while the assembly environment provides constraints. The robot is the main executor to perform the assembly action, which has the position control, drag and drop, positive impedance control, and negative impedance control modes. To reveal the characteristics of the HRC framework, the switch condition map of different control modes and the stability analysis of the HR coupled system are discussed. In the end, HRC assembly experiments are conducted, where the HRC assembly task can be accomplished when the assembling tolerance is 0.08 mm or with the interference fit. Experiments show that the HRC assembly has the complementary advantages of humans and robots and is efficient in finishing complex assembly tasks.

Fine root traits embody trade-offs between resource acquisition and conservation in plants. Yet, the differentiation of these traits across root orders, the existence of a root economics spectrum (RES) spanning these orders, and their linkage with leaf traits remain underexplored. In this study, we analyzed the first three root orders and leaf traits of 15 co-occurring plant species, including ten herbs and five shrubs, from the desert–oasis transition zone of the Hexi Corridor. We measured twelve morphological and chemical traits to investigate the relationships between root and leaf traits. Our results revealed significant variation in root traits both among species and within species across different root orders. We identified RES that spanned root orders, with higher-order roots exhibiting more conservative traits and lower-order roots displaying traits aligned with resource acquisition. Additionally, leaf and fine root traits showed partially decoupled adaptive strategies, yet evidence also supported the existence of a leaf economics spectrum (LES) and a potentially two-dimensional whole plant economics spectrum (WPES). Our findings suggest synergistic resource allocation strategies between fine roots and the entire plant, emphasizing the importance of root order in understanding fine root structure, function, and their interactions with other plant organs. These insights advance the understanding of fine root traits and their integration within the broader plant economics spectrum. Nevertheless, the differences in fine root traits across root orders, the presence of a root economics spectrum (RES) spanning these orders, and the relationships between fine root and leaf traits remain underexplored. Furthermore, our findings suggest synergistic resource strategies between fine roots and the whole plant. Concurrently, the significant interspecific and intraspecific differences in fine root traits, combined with the presence of a root economics spectrum across root orders, underscore the critical importance of root order in studying fine root structure, function, and their associations with other plant organs. Our findings offer valuable insights for future research on fine root traits, the RES, and their integration with the whole plant economics spectrum.

In order to reduce the negative impact on the environment caused by the massive accumulation of red mud (RM) and Yellow River sand (YRS), new alkali-excited granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS)/RM/YRS (AGRY) geopolymer cementitious materials were prepared by combining RM and YRS with GGBS in different ratios and using sodium silicate as the alkali exciter. The effects of YRS dosage and different curing conditions on the mechanical properties, hydration products, and pore structure of cementitious materials were investigated and analyzed in terms of cost and carbon emissions. The results showed that when the dosage of YRS was 40%, the compressive strength of the prepared AGRY cementitious material could reach 48.8 MPa at 28 d under standard curing, which showed mechanical properties comparable to those of the cementitious material without YRS. The cementitious material has a more compact internal structure, and the combination of RM and YRS promotes the chemical reaction of Al and Si elements and generates the (N, C)-A-S-H gel products, which are the key to the strength enhancement of the cementitious material. In addition, the prepared cementitious material is only 90% of the cement cost for the same strength and has low carbon emission accounting for only 43% of the cement carbon emission. This study not only provides a new way for the resource utilization of RM and YRS, but also contributes an excellent new environmentally friendly material for the construction industry to achieve the goal of low carbon development.

There is a growing and prevalent trend in the power transmission field of high-performance polymers replacing metallic materials given the strict light-weight requirement. Polymer gears exhibit a low elasticity modulus, high-temperature sensitivity, and increased geometric design flexibility, presenting technical challenges to the straightforward application of metallic design methods to polymer gear systems. This study is centred on the development of a high-power-density polymer gear transmission system for the accessory unit of a gas turbine engine, utilising an adaptive NSGA-III algorithm and surrogate sub-models. A comprehensive assessment indicator for the operating performance of the transmission system is suggested, encompassing gear strength, bearing temperature, and shaft torsional stiffness. The model made it possible to simultaneously optimise forty-six structural parameters, including gear tooth module, web thickness, and bearing clearance. In contrast to the original steel design scheme, the optimised polymer gear transmission system indicated a 49% reduction in weight and a 1.96-fold increase in power density. This presents a method for substituting steel with polymers for effective power transmission.

Abstract Background and Aims The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) continues to increase, and the phenomenon of women giving birth at an older age is becoming more common worldwide. Less is known abouts the impact of GDM combined with advanced maternal age (AMA) on pregnancy outcomes. To explore the impact of AMA complicated with GDM on pregnancy outcomes. Methods This study included 34,602 pregnancies between 2018 and 2020 in Hangzhou, China. The pregnant women were divided into four groups according to advanced age (≥35 years) and GDM as follows: AMA women without GDM (non‐AGDM) group (n = 2614), young pregnant women with GDM (YGDM) group (n = 4016), AMA women with GDM (AGDM) group (n = 850), and young pregnant women without GDM (non‐YGDM) group (n = 27,122). Univariate analysis was carried out by Mann–Whitney U test or Pearson's χ2 test. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the effect of AMA and GDM on pregnancy outcomes. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that in the comparison against non‐YGDM garoup, the ORs of fetal chromosome abnormality, parity, urgent cesarean section, gravidity, scheduled cesarean section, body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2, pre‐eclampsia, thrombocytopenia, hyperlipidemia, BMI 25–29.9 kg/m2, blood urea nitrogen, fasting blood glucose, and creatinine in AGDM group were 16.044, 4.284, 3.530, 3.284, 3.257, 2.049, 1.935, 1.898, 1.690, 1.471, 1.304, 1.216, and 1.026 (all p

Abstract It has long been conjectured that the large N deconfinement phase transition of N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills corresponds via AdS/CFT to the Hawking-Page transition in which black holes dominate the thermal ensemble, and quantitative evidence of this has come through the recent matching of the superconformal index of 1 16 $$ \frac{1}{16} $$ -BPS states to the supersymmetric black hole entropy. We introduce the half-BPS Gukov-Witten surface defect as a probe of the superconformal index, which also serves as an order parameter for the deconfinement transition. This can be studied directly in field theory as a modification of the usual unitary matrix model or in the dual description as a D3-brane probe in the background of a (complex) supersymmetric black hole. Using a saddle point approximation, we determine our defect index in the large N limit as a simple function of the chemical potentials and show independently that it is reproduced by the renormalized action of the brane in the black hole background. Along the way, we also comment on the Cardy limit and the thermodynamics of the D3-brane in the generalized ensemble. The defect index sharply distinguishes between the confining and the deconfining phases of the gauge theory and thus is a supersymmetric non-perturbative order parameter for these large N phase transitions which deserves further investigation. Finally, our work provides an example where the properties of a black hole coupled to an external system can be analyzed precisely.

Abstract Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common complication occurs during hepatic resection and transplantation. However, the mechanisms underlying hepatic IRI have not been fully elucidated. Here, we aim to explore the role of fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) in hepatic IRI. In this work, we find that Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) secrete FGF18 and alleviates hepatocytes injury. HSCs-specific FGF18 deletion largely aggravates hepatic IRI. Mechanistically, FGF18 treatment reduces the levels of ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 16 (USP16), leading to increased ubiquitination levels of Kelch Like ECH Associated Protein 1 (KEAP1) and the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Furthermore, USP16 interacts and deubiquitinates KEAP1. More importantly, Nrf2 directly binds to the promoter of USP16 and forms a negative feedback loop with USP16. Collectively, our results show FGF18 alleviates hepatic IRI by USP16/KEAP1/Nrf2 signaling pathway in male mice, suggesting that FGF18 represents a promising therapeutic approach for hepatic IRI.

Abstract Objective Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in neurodegenerative diseases. Astaxanthin (AST) can play a neuroprotective role owing to its long-chain conjugated unsaturated double bond, which imparts potent antioxidant, anti-neuroinflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties. However, the biological mechanisms underlying these effects remain unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and validate the protective effect of AST on neuronal senescence and apoptosis caused by oxidative stress induced by Aβ25–35 peptide, with the goal of preventing the onset of cognitive dysfunction. Methods Alzheimer's disease models comprising ICR mice and PC12 cells were established using Aβ25–35. The Morris water maze test was used to assess mouse behavior. Nissl staining revealed morphological changes in the mouse hippocampal neurons. To elucidate the mechanism of action of AST, ICR mice and PC12 cells were treated with the silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) inhibitor nicotinamide (NAM). Additionally, immunofluorescence, western blotting, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were used to evaluate changes in the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in the mouse hippocampus, and SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway proteins were detected. Moreover, the oxidative stress markers in ICR mice and PC12 cells were evaluated. Further, CCK-8 assays, Annexin V/PI double staining, and β-galactosidase activity assays were performed in PC12 cells to evaluate the anti-senescence and apoptotic effects of AST. Results In vivo experiments showed that Aβ25–35 impaired cognitive function, promoted morphological changes in hippocampal neurons, decreased Bcl-2 expression, increased Bax expression, decreased superoxide dismutase and GSH-px levels, and increased reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde levels. Conversely, AST alleviated the impact of Aβ25–35 in mice, with reversed outcomes. NAM administration reduced SIRT1 and PGC-1α expression in the hippocampus. This decrease was accompanied by cognitive dysfunction and hippocampal neuron atrophy, which were also evident in the mice. Additionally, in vitro experiments showed that Aβ25–35 could promote oxidative stress and induce the senescence and apoptosis of PC12 cells. Nonetheless, AST treatment counteracted this effect by inhibiting oxidative stress and altering the state of PC12 cells. Notably, the Aβ + NAM group exhibited the most significant rates of senescence and apoptosis in PC12 cells following NAM treatment. Conclusion AST can improve cellular senescence and apoptosis mediated by oxidative stress via the SIRT1/PGC-1α signaling pathway and plays a vital role in inhibiting neuronal senescence and apoptosis and enhancing cognitive ability.

Interleukin (IL)-17A, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is a fundamental function in the onset and advancement of multiple immune diseases. To uncover the primary compounds with IL-17A inhibitory activity, a large-scale screening of the library of traditional Chinese medicine constituents and microbial secondary metabolites was conducted using splenic cells from IL-17A-GFP reporter mice cultured under Th17-priming conditions. Our results indicated that some aureane-type sesquiterpene tetraketides isolated from a wetland mud-derived fungus, Myrothecium gramineum, showed remarkable IL-17A inhibitory activity. Nine new aureane-type sesquiterpene tetraketides, myrogramins A–I (1, 4–11), and two known ones (2 and 3) were isolated and identified from the strain. Compounds 1, 3, 4, 10, and 11 exhibited significant IL-17A inhibitory activity. Among them, compound 3, with a high fermentation yield dose-dependently inhibited the generation of IL-17A and suppressed glycolysis in splenic cells under Th17-priming conditions. Strikingly, compound 3 suppressed immunopathology in both IL-17A-mediated animal models of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and pulmonary hypertension. Our results revealed that aureane-type sesquiterpene tetraketides are a novel class of immunomodulators with IL-17A inhibitory activity, and hold great promise applications in treating IL-17A-mediated immune diseases.

To address the problems of noise interference and image blurring in hyperspectral imaging (HSI), this paper proposes a denoising method for HSI based on deep learning and a total variation (TV) prior. The method minimizes the first-order moment distance between the deep prior of a Fast and Flexible Denoising Convolutional Neural Network (FFDNet) and the Enhanced 3D TV (E3DTV) prior, obtaining dual priors that complement and reinforce each other’s advantages. Specifically, the original HSI is initially processed with a random binary sparse observation matrix to achieve a sparse representation. Subsequently, the plug-and-play (PnP) algorithm is employed within the framework of generalized alternating projection (GAP) to denoise the sparsely represented HSI. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to existing methods, this method shows significant advantages in both quantitative and qualitative assessments, effectively enhancing the quality of HSIs.

The air-cooled system is one of the most widely used battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) for the safety of electric vehicles. In this study, an efficient design of air-cooled BTMSs is proposed for improving cooling performance and reducing pressure drop. Combining with a numerical calculation method, a strategy with a varied step length of adjustments (∆d) is developed to optimize the spacing distribution among battery cells for temperature uniformity improvement. The optimization results indicate that the developed strategy reduces the optimization time by about 50% compared with a strategy using identical ∆d values while maintaining good performance of the optimized system. Furthermore, the system’s pressure drop does not increase after the spacing optimization. Based on this characteristic, a structural design strategy is proposed to improve the cooling performance and reduce the pressure drop simultaneously. First, the appropriate flow pattern is arranged and the secondary outlet is added to reduce the pressure drop of the system. The results show that the BTMS with U-type flow combined with a secondary outlet against the original outlet can effectively reduce the pressure drop of the system. Subsequently, this BTMS is further improved using the developed cell spacing optimization strategy with varied ∆d values while the pressure drop is fixed. It is found that the final optimized BTMS achieves a battery temperature difference below 1 K for different inlet airflow rates, with the pressure drop being reduced by at least 45% compared with the BTMS before the optimization.

With the rapid development of renewable energy and the increasing maturity of energy storage technology, microgrids are quickly becoming popular worldwide. The stochastic scheduling problem of microgrids can increase operational costs and resource wastage. In order to reduce operational costs and optimize resource utilization efficiency, the real-time scheduling of microgrids becomes particularly important. After collecting extensive data, reinforcement learning (RL) can provide good strategies. However, it cannot make quick and rational decisions in different environments. As a method with generalization ability, meta-learning can compensate for this deficiency. Therefore, this paper introduces a microgrid scheduling strategy based on RL and meta-learning. This method can quickly adapt to different environments with a small amount of training data, enabling rapid energy scheduling policy generation in the early stages of microgrid operation. This paper first establishes a microgrid model, including components such as energy storage, load, and distributed generation (DG). Then, we use a meta-reinforcement learning framework to train the initial scheduling strategy, considering the various operational constraints of the microgrid. The experimental results show that the MAML-based RL strategy has advantages in improving energy utilization and reducing operational costs in the early stages of microgrid operation. This research provides a new intelligent solution for microgrids’ efficient, stable, and economical operation in their initial stages.

Objective: To investigate the effect of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy (M) in patients with stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) on disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Methods: A total of 844 patients with stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ TNBC who were admitted to Comprehensive Breast Health Center, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from January 2009 to December 2018 were collected and divided into BCS and M groups according to the surgical method. COX regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of clinical characteristics and surgical methods on DFS and OS of the patients. The propensity score was further used to balance the differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups of patients, and to evaluate the differences in the prognosis of two groups of patients. Results: There were 533 patients (63.15%) underwent M and 311 patients (36.85%) underwent BCS. Patients with younger age, smaller tumor size, negative lymph node, and loss of HER2 expression (HER2-0) were more tend to BCS group compared to M group. Median follow-up time was 72 months. Multivariate COX analysis showed that the OS of M group was lower than that of BCS group (HR=2.02, 95% CI: 1.04-3.91, P=0.038), but there was no significant difference in DFS between the two groups (HR=1.42, 95% CI: 0.94-2.15, P=0.100). After propensity score matching for factors such as T stage, N stage and age, the results showed that there was no significant difference in OS (P=0.114) and DFS (P=0.124) between BCS and M groups. Conclusions: Among patients with stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ TNBC, patients with younger age, smaller tumor, negative lymph node, and HER2-0 were more likely to choose BCS. After propensity score matching for relevant clinicopathological parameters, the results indicated that there was no significant difference in OS and DFS of the TNBC patients undergoing BCS or M surgery.

Traditional cement concrete has the disadvantages of low tensile strength, poor toughness, and rapid development of cracks while cracking, which causes a significantly negative influence on the safety and durability of concrete road pavement. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of toughness improvement mechanisms and evaluation methods of cement concrete for road pavement. The review indicates that (i) The performance of concrete material depends on its material composition and internal structure. Aggregate size, cement properties and admixtures are the main factors of concrete toughness. (ii) The incorporation of rubber or fiber in pavement concrete improves the toughness of concrete materials. However, these additions must be maintained within a reasonable range. The amount of rubber and fiber are encouraged not more than 30% of the volume of fine aggregate and 2% of the volume of concrete, respectively. (iii) The toughness of pavement concrete material includes the toughness regarding bending, impact and fracture. The toughness of cement concrete for highway and municipal pavement is generally evaluated by bending and fracture toughness, while the toughness of airfield pavement concrete is more focused on impact toughness. (iv) The toughening measures of cement concrete for road pavement are mainly mixed with rubber or fiber, while these two materials have their defects, and the application of high-toughness cement concrete in the actual road still faces many challenges. For example, the synergistic effect of rubber and fiber, the development and application of new flexible admixtures, and the formulation of the toughness index of pavement cement concrete materials need further research.

Abstract Objective To investigate the feasibility of diagnosing osteoporosis (OP) in women through magnetic resonance image compilation (MAGiC). Methods A total of 110 patients who underwent lumbar magnetic resonance imaging and dual X-ray absorptiometry examinations were collected and divided into two groups according bone mineral density: osteoporotic group (OP) and non-osteoporotic group (non-OP). The variation trends of T1 (longitudinal relaxation time), T2 (transverse relaxation time) and BMD (bone mineral density) with the increase of age, and the correlation of T1 and T2 with BMD were examined by establishing a clinical mathematical model. Background: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains the second leading cause of death from a single infectious disease globally and poses a significant economic and clinical burden in the world in 2022. Of particular concern is the emergence of drug-resistant TB, accounting for 15%–20% of TB deaths. It is imperative to delve into the global trends of incidence and death rate for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), drawing upon the comprehensive Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 drug-resistant tuberculosis dataset. Methods: From the GBD 2021, data on incidence, prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and death of MDR-TB and XDR-TB from 1990 to 2021 were collected. We calculated the estimated annual percentage changes in age standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized death rate (ASDR), segmented by age, sex, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI). The impacts of various risk factors on MDR-TB and XDR-TB were also analyzed. Results: In 2021, there were an estimated 443,680 (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 259,196–766,545) incident cases of MDR-TB, and an estimated 106,818 (95% UI: 41,612–211,854) death cases of MDR-TB, while there were an estimated 24,036 (95% UI: 17,144–34,587) incident cases of XDR-TB and 7,946 (95% UI: 3,326–14,859) death cases of XDR-TB. The incidence and death cases of MDR-TB were lowest in high SDI regions, whereas the incidence rates of XDR-TB in high-middle SDI regions were higher than those in middle SDI and high SDI regions. Conclusion: This study reported the disease burden of drug-resistant TB from 1990 to 2021. Until 2021, drug-resistant TB is still a serious problem in low SDI countries, especially for high-risk age populations with high-risk factors. Controlling drug-resistant TB requires effective control strategies and healthcare systems.

IntroductionRecent researches have demonstrated that microbes are crucial for the growth and development of the human body, the movement of nutrients, and human health. Diseases may arise as a result of disruptions and imbalances in the microbiome. The pathological investigation of associated diseases and the advancement of clinical medicine can both benefit from the identification of drug-associated microbes.MethodsIn this article, we proposed a new prediction model called MDSVDNV to infer potential microbe-drug associations, in which the Node2vec network embedding approach and the singular value decomposition (SVD) matrix decomposition method were first adopted to produce linear and non-linear representations of microbe interactions.Results and discussionCompared with state-of-the-art competitive methods, intensive experimental results demonstrated that MDSVDNV could achieve the best AUC value of 98.51% under a 5-fold CV, which indicated that MDSVDNV outperformed existing competing models and may be an effective method for discovering latent microbe–drug associations in the future.

The petrochemical industry is one of the main sources of industrial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. In this study, typical petrochemical refining enterprises in Southeast China were selected, direct testing of VOCs in 18 petrochemical processes, and 87 samples were obtained using different on-site sampling methods, such as stack, fugitive, static and dynamic sealing point emissions sampling methods, based on the key process units, tank areas, loading and unloading areas, and plant boundaries of the petrochemical industry. Simultaneously, on-site concentration testing and laboratory analysis of 115 VOCs were conducted. Our findings reveal that, although the overall industry emission profile predominantly consists of low-carbon alkanes and alkenes, with relatively minimal halogenated hydrocarbon VOC emissions, there are substantial discrepancies in the primary species across different stages. The mass percentages of alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, halogenated hydrocarbons, and oxygenated VOCs in different process units of the petrochemical industry were 55 ± 27%, 8.5 ± 15%, 23 ± 27%, 3.9 ± 4.3%, and 10 ± 8.4%, respectively. The dominant species in the atmospheric vents of the depropanizer, light hydrocarbon recovery unit, continuous reforming unit, catalytic cracking unit, and sulfur recovery unit were n-butane (15%), n-hexane (13%), propane (21%), propylene (26%), and ethylene (28%), respectively. The dominant species in the gasoline tank top source profile was isopentane (48%), while that of the gasoline loading and unloading area was methyl tert-butyl ether (19%). High-carbon alkanes such as n-decane, n-octane, and n-heptane (>5% mass fractions) were prominent in kerosene tank tops. Furthermore, the results of the chemical reactivity assessment indicate that VOC emissions during the loading and unloading processes, as well as the ethylene production process, should be managed to mitigate ozone formation potential. According to the cancer risk assessments, benzene was the main factor that increased the risk, and its levels were far beyond the accepted cutoff point.

Abstract Sphingosine (Sph) plays important roles in various complex biological processes. Abnormalities in Sph metabolism can result in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. However, due to the lack of rapid and accurate detection methods, understanding sph metabolic in related diseases is limited. Herein, a series of near‐infrared fluorogenic probes DMS‐X (X = 2F, F, Cl, Br, and I) are designed and synthesized. The fast oxazolidinone ring formation enables the DMS‐2F to detect Sph selectively and ultrasensitively, and the detection limit reaches 9.33 ± 0.41 nm. Moreover, it is demonstrated that DMS‐2F exhibited a dose‐ and time‐dependent response to Sph and can detect sph in living cells. Importantly, for the first time, the changes in Sph levels induced by Aβ42 oligomers and H2O2 are assessed through a fluorescent imaging approach, and further validated the physiological processes by which Aβ42 oligomers and reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐induce changes in intracellular Sph levels. Additionally, the distribution of Sph in living zebrafish is successfully mapped by in vivo imaging of a zebrafish model. This work provides a simple and efficient method for probing Sph in living cells and in vivo, which will facilitate investigation into the metabolic process of Sph and the connection between Sph and disease pathologies.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of isometric prone trunk extension (IPTE) contraction intensity on the stiffness of erector spinae (ES), semitendinosus (ST), biceps femoris (BF), and gastrocnemius muscles to understand the overall muscle mechanical behavior during IPTE and to explore the mechanisms of oordinated contraction of the body kinetic chain.Methods: Twenty healthy females were recruited, and participants underwent IPTE at three contraction intensities, i.e., 0% maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), 30% MVIC, and 60% MVIC, and muscle stiffness was measured using MyotonPRO.Results: Muscle stiffness was moderately to strongly positively correlated with contraction intensity (r = 0.408–0.655, p < 0.001). The percentage increase in stiffness at low intensity was much greater in ES than in lower limb muscles and greater in ST and BF than in gastrocnemius, whereas at moderate intensity, the percentage increase in stiffness decreased in all muscles, and the percentage increase in stiffness in ES was lower than that in ST. There was a moderate to strong positive correlation between ES stiffness variation and ST (r = 0.758–0.902, p < 0.001), BF (r = 0.454–0.515, p < 0.05), MG (r = 0.643–0.652, p < 0.01), LG (r = 0.659–0.897, p < 0.01).Conclusion: IPTE significantly affected the stiffness of lumbar and lower limb muscles, and low-intensity IPTE activated the ES more efficiently. There were significant coordinated muscle contractions between ES, ST, and LG. This provides preliminary evidence for exploring the overall modulation pattern of the lumbar and lower limb muscles’ kinetic chains. In future studies, we will combine other stiffness assessment methods (such as Magnetic Resonance Elastography, Shear Wave Elastography, or electromyography) to corroborate our findings.

In this study, we explored the impact of ionic liquid gating on YBa2Cu3O7−x superconductivity. We observed that direct contact of YBa2Cu3O7−x and the ionic liquid N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (DEME-TFSI) results in irreversible electrochemical reactions, despite the application of a relatively low gate voltage at 220 K. Capping a thin layer of boron nitride (BN) on YBa2Cu3O7−x enabled a reversible modulation of carrier density at 300 K. Benefiting from the higher ion mobility of ionic liquid at 300 K, this modification led to more than a one-time increase in carrier density, a 3-time improvement in voltage modulation efficiency, and a reversible tuning of the superconducting temperature. These findings suggest that using a BN capping layer holds promise for enhancing the stability and efficiency of devices using ionic liquid gating.

Prediction of bond return is a classic problem in financial area, providing an important basis for portfolio construction and risk management. The sustainable investment attribute of green bonds has been favored by investors, so that green bonds have become an important component for major asset allocation. However, due to the specific investment focus of green bonds, investors’ return expectations are influenced not only by traditional corporate bond factors, but also by related factors such as climate change and energy transition. Against the backdrop of increasingly severe climate risks and the global energy crisis, this paper analyses the volatility characteristics of China’s green bonds at multiple time scales, and introduces exogenous variables such as returns of the alternative financial assets, climate risks and returns of energy markets for prediction. Based on the LSTM model, the volatility of green bond yield at different time scales is separately predicted using optimal exogenous variable before integration. It is found that the new integrated prediction model can significantly improve the forecasting performance compared to traditional single LSTM models and simple decomposition-integrated models. Further, both climate risks and energy markets variables have a significant improvement effect on predicting green bond in low-frequency item, while energy markets variables also have a better predictive effect on trend items. Building on the use of only LSTM model, it could be further enhanced by integrating more algorithms to select the best single model for each component, further improve the prediction accuracy and provide a more effective quantitative tool for investment decision-making and risk management in related fields.
