Daqingshan piedmont fault is located in the northern margin of Hetao basin and has been active strongly since the Late Quaternary. Previous researchers had conducted extensive research on the characteristics of paleoseismic in this area, but limited by the dating techniques and the fact that there were fewer data available on the same fault profile that can effectively constrain paleoseismic events, and fewer profiles that can reveal more paleoseismic events. This paper explores the excavation of an paleoseismic trench on the east side of Lianhuashan in the western section of Tuyouqi of the Daqingshan piedmont fault, using Optically Stimulated Luminescence data, and combineing with the age data of previous exploration trenches. By using the fault successive limit method, it is found that the western section of the Tuyouqi fault has experienced five paleoseismic events approximately 11500 years ago, with an average recurrence interval of 2260 years. The five paleoseismic events in this section of the fault, from new to old, are 1.28 to 1.42 ka, 3.41 to 3.60 ka, 4.08 to 5.01 ka, 8.26 to 9.32 ka, and 10.70 to 11.30 ka, respectively. The latest event of activity should be the earthquake of 849 AD. Meanwhile, the trench exploration revealed that the fault in this section exhibits a normal fault nature, with an inclination angle between 58 and 77 degrees. According to empirical formula, the potential seismic capacity of the Baotou section, the western section of Tuyouqi, and the western section of Tuzuoqi are around MW6.8～7.1, MW6.8～7.1 and MW7.1～7.2, respectively. The magnitude obtained by the empirical formula in this paper is relatively small, and there may be cascade rupture. In the later stage, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the risk of the western section of Daqingshan piedmont fault combined with other means.

Abstract Fault maturity has been proposed to exert a first order control on earthquake rupture, yet direct observations linking individual rupture to long‐term fault growth are rare. The 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake ruptured the east‐growing end of the slow‐moving (∼1 mm/yr) Jiangcuo fault in north Tibet, providing an opportunity to examine the relation between rupture characteristics and fault structure. Here we combine field and multiple remote sensing techniques to map the surface rupture at cm‐resolution and document comprehensively on‐fault offsets and off‐fault deformation. The 158 km‐long surface rupture consists of misoriented structurally inherited N110°‐striking segments and younger optimally oriented N093°‐striking segments, relative to the regional stress field. Despite being comparatively newly formed, the ∼N093°‐striking fault segments accommodate more localized strain, with up to 3 m on‐fault left‐lateral slip and 25%–50% off‐fault deformation, and possibly faster rupture speed. These results are in contrast with previous findings showing more localized strain and faster rupture speed on more mature fault segments; instead, our observations suggest that fault orientation with respect to the regional stress can exert a more important control than fault maturity on coseismic rupture behavior when both factors are at play.

Geometric complexities play an important role in the nucleation, propagation, and termination of strike-slip earthquake ruptures. The 2021 Mw7.4 Maduo earthquake rupture initiated at a large releasing stepover with a complex fault intersection. In the epicentral region, we conducted detailed mapping and classification of the surface ruptures and slip measurements associated with the earthquake, combining high-resolution uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) images and optical image correlation with field investigations. Our findings indicate that the coseismic ruptures present discontinuous patterns mixed with numerous lateral spreadings due to strong ground shaking. The discontinuous surface ruptures are uncharacteristic in slip to account for the large and clear displacements of offset landforms in the epicentral region. Within the releasing stepovers, the deformation zone revealed from the optical image correlation map indicates that a fault may cut diagonally across the pull-apart basin at depth. The left-lateral horizontal coseismic displacements from field measurements are typically ≤0.6 m, significantly lower than the 1–2.7 m measured from the optical image correlation map. Such a discrepancy indicates a significant proportion of off-fault deformation or the possibility that the rupture stopped at a shallow depth during its initiation phase instead of extending to the surface. The fault network and multi-fault junctions west and south of the epicenter suggest a possible complex path, which retarded the westward propagation at the initial phase of rupture growth. A hampered initiation might enhance the seismic ground motion and the complex ground deformation features at the surface, including widespread shaking-related fissures.

Assessing fault activity in regions lacking Quaternary sedimentary constraints remains a global challenge. In this study, we used channel slope distribution to examine variations in rock uplift along faults. By comparing channel steepness with published low-temperature thermochronology and paleo-seismic data, we identified deformation changes both perpendicular to and along the Longmen Shan at various time scales. Our data revealed distinct fault segments displaying distinct thrust activities along the Longmen Shan’s strike. In the southern segment, the Dachuan fault exhibited the highest activity, and its movement had persisted for millions of years. In the central segment, the Wenchuan fault was active during theearly Quaternary but has become dormant since the late Pleistocene. Within the past millions of years, the Yingxiu and Pengguan faults displayed significant vertical displacement. Fault activity in the northern Longmen Shan was relatively weak, with the Qingchuan fault transitioning from thrust movement during the Neogene to pure strike-slip activity since the Pleistocene. Overall, the Dachuan and Huya faults exhibited deformation patterns similar to the Yingxiu fault during the Quaternary. Similar to the Yingxiu fault, which triggered the Wenchuan earthquake, the Dachuan and Huya faults possess the capacity to produce significant earthquakes in the future. The variations in deformation perpendicular to and along the Longmen Shan fault system underscore the importance of upper crustal shortening in shaping the rock uplift patterns and topography of the eastern Tibetan Plateau margin.

The Zhuozishan West Piedmont Fault (ZWPF) is an active normal fault in the northwestern corner of the Ordos Block. Studying the recurrence characteristics of paleoearthquakes is useful for understanding the regional seismic hazard potential. In this study, paleoseismic trench and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating methods are used to determine the temporal sequence of paleoearthquakes. Severn earthquakes were constrained to be E7 (73.4 ± 12.9 ka to 75.3 ± 10.6 ka), E6, (63.7 ± 7.4 ka to 64.4 ± 8.2 ka), E5 (53.2 ± 7.0 ka to 58.7 ± 6.5 ka), E4 (42.6 ± 6.3 ka to 47.7 ± 5.8 ka), E3 (31.0–3.4 ka to 31.3 ± 3.4 ka), E2 (26.1 ± 2.7 ka to 28.1 ± 3.8 ka) and E1 (15.8 ± 1.9 ka to 20.2 ± 2.6 ka). The recurrence interval of strong earthquakes in the ZWPF is roughly constrained to be 8.1–14 ka, with magnitudes of Mw 7.0–7.4 that ruptured the entire fault. Based on the timing of the latest earthquake event, the elapsed time approached or exceeded the recurrence interval revealed from paleoearthquakes. Hence, we suggest that the northwestern corner of the Ordos Block has a significantly high seismic hazard potential and that the occurrence of a strong earthquake should not be underestimated.

The slip rates of normal faults on the northern margin of the Ordos Block are critical for understanding the deformation of the Ordos Block and adjacent areas. In this study, we obtain the late Pleistocene slip rate of an active normal fault, the Zhuozishan West Piedmont Fault (ZWPF), in the northwestern corner of the Ordos Block. Satellite imagery interpretation and field investigations suggest that the fault displaces late Pleistocene alluvial fans and forms west-facing fault scarps. To quantify the vertical slip rate of the ZWPF, we measured the displacements along the fault scarps using differential GPS and an unmanned aerial vehicle system and dated the displaced geomorphic surfaces using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating methods. The vertical slip rate of the fault is constrained to 0.1 ± 0.02 mm/a, which suggests a horizontal extension rate of 0.05 mm/a for a dip of 65°. This rate is consistent with those on similar structures in the northwestern Ordos Block. Combining this result with published slip rates along other active faults, we infer that the NW-directed extension rate across the northwestern corner of the Ordos Block is ∼0.6–1.3 mm/a. This rate is comparable with the geodetic strain rate. Given the extension rate, we believe that extensional deformation is mainly concentrated on the western side of the basin.

The 22 May 2021 MW 7.4 Madoi, Qinghai, China earthquake presented a rare opportunity to apply the modern unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography method in extreme altitude and weather conditions to image surface ruptures and near-field effects of earthquake-related surface deformations in the remote Tibet. High-resolution aerial photographs were acquired in the days immediately following the mainshock. The complex surface rupture patterns associated with this event were covered comprehensively at 3–6 cm resolution. This effort represents the first time that an earthquake rupture in the interior of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has been fully and systematically captured by such high-resolution imagery, with an unprecedented level of detail, over its entire length. The dataset has proven valuable in documenting subtle and transient rupture features, such as the significant mole-tracks and opening fissures, which were ubiquitous coseismically but degraded during the subsequent summer storm season. Such high-quality imagery also helps to document with high fidelity the fractures of the surface rupture zone (supplements of this paper), the pattern related to how the faults ruptured to the ground surface, and the distribution of off-fault damage. In combination with other ground-based mapping efforts, the data will be analyzed in the following months to better understand the mechanics of earthquake rupture related to the fault zone rheology, rupture dynamics, and frictional properties along with the fault interface.

The 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo (Madoi) earthquake that struck the northern Tibetan Plateau resulted in widespread coseismic deformation features, such as surface ruptures and soil liquefaction. By utilizing the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry technology, we accurately recognize and map 39,286 liquefaction sites within a 1.5 km wide zone along the coseismic surface rupture. We then systematically analyze the coseismic liquefaction distribution characteristics and the possible influencing factors. The coseismic liquefaction density remains on a higher level within 250 m from the surface rupture and decreases in a power law with the increasing distance. The amplification of the seismic waves in the vicinity of the rupture zone enhances the liquefaction effects near it. More than 90% of coseismic liquefaction occurs in the peak ground acceleration (PGA) > 0.50 g, and the liquefaction density is significantly higher in the region with seismic intensity > VIII. Combined with the sedimentary distribution along-strike of the surface rupture, the mapped liquefaction sites indicate that the differences in the sedimentary environments could cause more intense liquefaction on the western side of the epicenter, where loose Quaternary deposits are widely spread. The stronger coseismic liquefaction sites correspond to the Eling Lake section, the Yellow River floodplain, and the Heihe River floodplain, where the soil is mostly saturated with loose fine-grained sand and the groundwater level is high. Our results show that the massive liquefaction caused by the strong ground shaking during the Maduo (Madoi) earthquake was distributed as the specific local sedimentary environment and the groundwater level changed.

The Minle-Yongchang fault is an active reverse fault-related fold structural belt developed in the Hexi Corridor Basin on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. An earthquake of Ms6.1 occurred near the Minle-Yongchang fault zone in 2003. The deformation pattern of the Minle-Yongchang fault and its relationship with this strong earthquake, however, are still not well known. In this study, we used the methods of HYPOINVERSE absolute location and double-difference location with waveform cross-correlation technology to relocate the 2003 Minle earthquake sequence. In total, 383 earthquakes are precisely relocated. Based on the results of precise seismic relocation, using the method of determining fault planes by small earthquakes, the seismogenic fault is found to be a low-angle thrust with a strike of 311°, a dip of NE, and a dip angle of 14°. It does not rupture the surface, extends to 19–20 km depth, and is hidden beneath the Yonggu Anticline. We also employed the cut-and-paste (CAP) method with a broadband waveform to determine the focal mechanism of the mainshock in 2003: the strike is 311°; the dip is 34°; and the rake is 90°. The fault plane parameters obtained in these two ways are roughly consistent. We also used a digital elevation model (DEM) derived from the SPOT 6 stereo image pair and high-precision differential Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure the displacement of terraces. Topographic profiles along the terraces across the Minle-Yongchang fault show that high alluvial terrain exhibits fold deformation. The vertical offsets of the T2 and T3 terraces along the Tongziba River are approximately 2.3 and 22 m, respectively. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating indicates that the ages of T2 and T3 are 11.3 and 106 ka, respectively. We calculated an average uplift rate of 0.21 ± 0.05 mm/a by dividing the vertical offset by age. According to the spatial distribution of the relocated earthquake sequence and terrace deformation in the study area, the Ms6.1 Minle earthquake in 2003 was caused by the latest activity of a blind reverse fault-related fold in the Hexi Corridor Basin.

To better constrain the long-term millennial slip rate of the Haiyuan fault in its central part, we revisited the site of Daqing, where there are multiple paired offset terraces. We used 0.1-m-resolution terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and uncrewed aerial vehicle imagery to survey the offset terraces, quantify their geomorphology, and map the fault trace. From these observations, we refined the geomorphological interpretation of the site, measured terrace riser offsets, and determined their relation to terrace formation. The well-constrained age of the highest terrace, T3, at 13.7 ± 1.5 ka, determined from a combination of surface and subsurface optically stimulated luminescence, 14C, and terrestrial in situ 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide dating, associated with an offset of 88 m, yields a late Pleistocene minimum slip rate of 6.4 ± 1.0 mm/yr. The less-well-constrained offset (72 ± 3 m) of the T3/T2 riser base and the age (>9.3 ± 0.6 ka) of terrace T2 yield a maximum slip rate of 7.7 ± 0.6 mm/yr. The smallest offset of a gully incised into T1 of 6.0 ± 0.5 m is potentially associated with the most recent slip event that occurred in the last millennia. Overall, these offsets and ages constrain a geological rate of 5-8 mm/yr (preferred rate >6.4 mm/yr), similar to geodetic estimates. Our collocated high-resolution topography and precise chronology make it possible to reveal the geomorphic complexities of terrace riser offsets and their postformational evolution, and to show how previously determined geological rates along the fault were both under- and overestimated. Historical archives of earthquake occurrence provide a millennial view of fault system behavior with precision beyond the capability of radiometric dating techniques. Understanding the long historical record of earthquake activity in China presents a great opportunity to develop such an archive. However, the complex distributed nature of faulting here leads to uncertainty and requires matching historic events to the paleoseismic record from fault excavations. We present paleoseismic evidence for the most recent rupture of the north Danghe Nanshan thrust (NDNT) and correlate the age of this event to nearby historical archives. We use high-resolution topography generated from airborne drone photography to measure an average coseismic fault throw of 0.8±0.2 m. Three trenches excavated across these small scarps show shortening of ~1.3 m, consistent with event magnitude of Mw 7.0±0.5 that probably ruptured the entire ~45-km-long northern strand of the eastern NDNT system. Geochronology data and the historical record from Dunhuang and Anxi together indicate that this event likely occurred at A.D. 1289, during the Yuan Dynasty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The slip rate of Yema River-Daxue Mountain fault in the western segment of Qilian Mountains was determined by the dated offset of river risers or gullies. Results indicate that the left-lateral fault slip rate is 2.82 ± 0.20 mm/a at Dazangdele site, 2.00 ± 0.24 mm/a at Shibandun site, and 0.50 ± 0.36 and 2.80 ± 0.33 mm/a at two sites in Zhazihu. The ideal average slip rate of the whole fault is 2.81 ± 0.32 mm/a. The lower slip rate confirms part of the displacement of Altyn Tagh fault was transformed into an uplifting of the strap mountains in the western segment of Qilian Mountains, whereas another part transformed into sinistral displacement of Haiyuan fault. This study illustrates that the slip of large strike-slip faults in the northeastern margin of the plateau transforms into crust thickening at the tip of the fault without large-scale propagation to the outer parts of the plateau. High-resolution topographic or imagery data effectively reveal geomorphic offsets along faults that can be used to deduce slip-per-event of recurrent rupture events. Documentation of patterns of geomorphic offsets is scarce on faults that undergo both creep and coseismic rupture. In this paper, we used newly acquired high-resolution light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data to compile geomorphic offsets along the Laohu Shan section of the Haiyuan fault, in the northern Tibetan Plateau, where interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data suggest creep presently occurs over a 35-km-long stretch at a rate comparable to the long-term geological slip rate, despite evidence for past coseismic fault rupture. Numerous offset gullies identified using the LiDAR data yield a range of offsets from less than 2 m up to 50 m. These offsets have well-separated probability density peaks at 2-3 m, ~7 m, and ~14 m, with increments of 2-3 m, 4-6 m, and 5-7 m. The sequence of paleoseismic events along the Laohu Shan section indicates that the gullies with offsets of 2-3 m are likely related to surface rupture of the historical 1888 Jingtai earthquake, plus subsequent creep. Offset increments of 4-6 m and 5-7 m may represent coseismic slip in past paleoseismic events plus creep during the interseismic period. The creeping Laohu Shan section preserves numerous discrete cumulative offsets, with an offset clustering pattern indistinguishable from that on a locked fault with recurrent earthquake ruptures. Association of offset increments with known paleoseismic events yields a slip rate of 3-5 mm/yr during the past 200 years, roughly similar to the ~5 mm/yr creep rate. If the ratio of surface creep rate to the total fault slip rate has been continuous, then seismic moment release by brittle ruptures, and thus seismic hazard, would be much reduced on the Laohu Shan section of the Haiyuan fault. Alternatively, the current high creep rate may be a transient phenomenon, perhaps after slip following the 2000 Jingtai Mw 5.6 earthquake or in response to the adjacent 1920 M ***8 Haiyuan earthquake rupture that terminated immediately to the east.
