The payload fairing in Japan is fixed by a lot of notched bolts. These notched bolts were fractured by axial impact tensile using the explosive devices to separate the fairing. In this case, the stress waves and the oscillations propagate, which may seriously damage the satellites. In this study, the impact deformation and the fracture behavior of notched titanium alloy bolt was investigated using a split Hopkinson pressure bar method. The notched bolt specimen was made of commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The maximum load value was increased with increasing the displacement rate. It can be said that the strain rate dependence of strength for Ti-6Al-4V alloy appeared. From the observation of fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope, compared with the quasi-static test, it was clear that the irregularities of the fractured surface at the impact tensile test became rough. Therefore, it was found that the brittle fracture was mainly observed due to the increase in displacement rate, which may mean that the mode of fracture changes from the transgranular to the intergranular. It was surmised that this change of fracture mode was caused by the high strain rate due to stress concentration of the notched part.

Inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity induces growth arrest, differentiation, and, in certain cell types, apoptosis. FR901228, FK228, or depsipeptide, is an HDAC inhibitor effective in T-cell lymphomas. Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is caused by human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and remains incurable. We examined whether FR901228 is effective for treatment of ATL by assessing its ability to induce apoptosis of HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines and primary leukemic cells from ATL patients. FR901228 induced apoptosis of Tax-expressing and -unexpressing HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines and selective apoptosis of primary ATL cells, especially those of patients with acute ATL. FR901228 also efficiently reduced the DNA binding of NF-κB and AP-1 in HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines and primary ATL cells and down-regulated the expression of Bcl-xL and cyclin D2, regulated by NF-κB. Although the viral protein Tax is an activator of NF-κB and AP-1, FR901228induced apoptosis was not associated with reduced expression of Tax. In vivo use of FR901228 partly inhibited the growth of tumors of HTLV-1-infected T cells transplanted subcutaneously in SCID mice. Our results indicated that FR901228 could induce apoptosis of these cells and suppress the expression of NF-κB and AP-1 and suggest that FR901228 could be therapeutically effective in ATL. Water mist generated during a rocket launch is thought to protect the rocket and payloads from acoustic noise. The size of mist particles is essential to understanding the effect on noise reduction. A two-wavelength multi-static lidar was developed for measuring water mist size at the launch site. The lidar determines particle size from signals at three scattering angles at two wavelengths. The method was tested with artificial mist and applied to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's H-IIA/B large-scale rocket launches. The measured particle size near the outside edge of the mist cloud was 3.5-5 μm in diameter. The extinction coefficient at 532 nm derived using the Klett backward inversion method was 100 - 200   km -1 . The estimated liquid water content (LWC) was ∼0.3   g / m 3 . The extinction coefficient was high, but the LWC was comparable to that of the water clouds.

To disclose the information for the risk in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), we propose a new concept of the risk in allo-HSCT. We analyzed all 94 allo-HSCT cases (86 patients) in our hospital since 1983. The overall survival rate was 56.4%. Among 27 patients considered to be at standard risk judged by conventional risk criteria who underwent initial transplantation from HLA-identical donors, 66.7% of them survived. Univariate statistical analyses among subgroups classified by conventional risk criteria and several reported prognostic factors show significant differences. However, all of them failed to show significant difference because of too much variation between cases in the same subgroup or a too small number of patients as compared with the U.S.A or European transplantation centers. We propose an alternative comprehensive classification of transplantation risk according to two newly-recognized distinct risks, disease state and transplantation risk. This comprehensive classification revealed significance in the multivariate statistical analyses in our hospital. We expect further discussion or the appearance of other beneficial nationwide proposals to evaluate and disclose the risk affecting survival following allo-HSCT.
