22. Boosting Throughput and Efficiency of Hardware Spiking Neural Accelerators Using Time Compression Supporting Multiple Spike Codes

Abstract

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are the third generation of neural networks and can explore both rate and temporal coding for energy-efficient event-driven computation. However, the decision accuracy of existing SNN designs is contingent upon processing a large number of spikes over a long period. Nevertheless, the switching power of SNN hardware accelerators is proportional to the number of spikes processed while the length of spike trains limits throughput and static power efficiency. This paper presents the first study on developing temporal compression to significantly boost throughput and reduce energy dissipation of digital hardware SNN accelerators while being applicable to multiple spike codes. The proposed compression architectures consist of low-cost input spike compression units, novel input-and-output-weighted spiking neurons, and reconfigurable time constant scaling to support large and flexible time compression ratios. Our compression architectures can be transparently applied to any given pre-designed SNNs employing either rate or temporal codes while incurring minimal modification of the neural models, learning algorithms, and hardware design. Using spiking speech and image recognition datasets, we demonstrate the feasibility of supporting large time compression ratios of up to 16×, delivering up to 15.93×, 13.88×, and 86.21× improvements in throughput, energy dissipation, the tradeoffs between hardware area, runtime, energy, and classification accuracy, respectively based on different spike codes on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGA. These results are achieved while incurring little extra hardware overhead.

29. Broad-angle coherent perfect absorption-lasing and collimation in two-dimensional non-Hermitian phononic crystals.

Abstract

Coherent perfect absorption-lasing and collimation have been extensively studied primarily for normal incidence, leaving broad-angle scenarios relatively unexplored. In this work, we investigate a two-dimensional non-Hermitian phononic crystal, aiming to achieve broad-angle coherent perfect absorption-lasing and collimation. Our approach involves orchestrating a parity-time phase transition in the band structure through a combination of non-symmorphic glide symmetry in the lattice, gain-loss modulation, and engineering of the band structure. In both the real and imaginary parts of the band structure, exceptional points form a slab-like contour with nearly zero dispersion along the boundary of the Brillouin zone. As a result, the range of incidence angles for coherent perfect absorption-lasing and collimation is significantly expanded at the frequency of the exceptional points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Towards a Framework for Evaluating the Research Performance of Chinese Double First-Class Universities

Abstract

The study focuses on the research performance of Double First-Class (DFC) universities in China. A theoretical framework based on economic theory and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method for a novel evaluation model is proposed. The model is performed on a sample of 41 participant DFC universities in China. Using data collected from these universities, it was found that there is no consistency between performance ranking, input ranking, and output ranking, with the best ranked universities far from the most efficient. These findings provide empirical evidence of DFC universities' research performance situation and suggest strategies that the government can use to propel their sustainable development.

Abstract

Split-ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) are widely used in microwave devices. Considering its advantages of fluidity, high metallic conductivity, and extreme deformability, liquid metal is expected to enrich the tunability of SRR and CSRR. Here, a stretchable resonator based on CSRR, using liquid metal as the conducting layer and Ecoflex as the dielectric layer, is prepared by 3D printing. From the transmission spectra, we find that the resonant frequency can be continuously tuned from 3.77 to 3.40 GHz by stretching the resonator, which exhibits a stable quality factor, high ductility, excellent stretchability, and linearity. We then study the coupling between magnons in a yttrium iron garnet film and microwave photons in CSRRs. The anti-crossing effects are observed in transmission coefficient spectra by changing either the strength of the magnetic field or the size of the CSRR. The coupling strength g/2π is determined to be 63 MHz at a coupling frequency of 3.77 GHz and magnetic field of 800 Oe.
