Micro-eukaryotic communities are highly sensitive to environmental changes, and their structure offers crucial insights into the impact of human activities on aquatic habitats. Despite their significance, the assembly mechanisms of micro-eukaryotic communities in lake ecosystems heavily influenced by human activities are not well understood. In this study, we utilized 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing to examine the biodiversity of micro-eukaryotes over a one-year period in Lake Weishan, one of the largest freshwater lakes in northern China. We analyzed the ecological processes governing community assembly among key ecological groups, specifically habitat generalists and specialists. Our findings revealed substantial temporal variation in microbial diversity and community composition, likely driven by water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and the concentrations of several ions (e.g., Ca2+ and F−). Notably, community assembly in this canal-disturbed lake was predominantly influenced by stochastic processes (58.18%) rather than deterministic processes (20.46%). Habitat specialists (425 operational taxonomic units, OTUs) exhibited significantly greater diversity compared to habitat generalists (189 OTUs) and were predominantly shaped by stochastic processes (52.47%). In contrast, habitat generalists were less influenced by these processes (17.69%). Altogether, these results suggest that the ecological processes governing micro-eukaryotic community assembly differ markedly between habitat generalists and specialists, primarily due to their varied adaptability to environmental changes.

China has abundant coalbed methane (CBM) resources, and most of them are low-permeability and tight reservoirs, with generally low production rate and small recovery factor. Existing technologies face great challenges to meet the demand on CBM in China. It is desirable to develop new methods to improve the production rate and enhance recovery factor. In addition to physical stimulation methods such as hydraulic fracturing and open-hole cave completion, the use of chemical methods to improve physical properties of coal reservoirs has also been a hot research topic in recent years. Coal reservoir acidification and oxidation technology can promote desorption of gas and enlarge permeability of reservoir. But for different coal rank coal reservoirs, the acidification and oxidation agents need to be optimized and their performance evaluated. Laboratory experiments are conducted to compare and analyze the physical properties coal samples from Baode, Mu’ai, and Xinjiang blocks, including coal rank, texture, macroscopic characteristics, quality, porosity, permeability, element, and mineral composition. The optimal concentration of hydrochloric acid is determined through pre-dissolution experiment of coal powder in acid solution. Then a five-factor and three-level orthogonal experiment for acid solution optimization is designed and performed by using Design-Expert software, which identifies the sensitive factors affecting the dissolution. For the coal samples in Baode, Mu’ai, and Xinjiang blocks, the oxidant types and the corresponding acidification and oxidation agent systems are optimized. Applying these acidification and oxidation agent systems to coal samples from Baode, Mu’ai, and Xinjiang blocks, the change of porosity, permeability, and wettability are compared and analyzed. Finally, through numerical simulation, the gas production is predicted for acidification and oxidation in typical well group in Block Mu’ai. Results show that the acid solution has the best dissolution at a concentration of hydrochloric acid of 3 mol/L to 4 mol/L; Top factors played in the experiment are soaking time, acid type, soaking temperature, coal sample type, and acid concentration, in descending order of importance; The optimal oxidant is a hydrogen peroxide solution with a concentration of 3%; the mixed acidification oxidant formula in Baode block is 10% HCl + 2% CH3COOH + 2% HF + 3% H2O2; The optimal mixed acidification oxidant formula in Mu’ai block is 8% HCl + 2% CH3COOH + 4% HF + 3% H2O2; the optimal mixed acidification oxidant formula in Xinjiang block is 12% HCl + 1% CH3COOH + 1% HF + 3% H2O2; The higher the coal rank, the greater the HF content in the optimal acidification oxidant system. Both acidification and oxidation improve the porosity and permeability of coal samples to some extent, and the improvement in low-rank coal is more significant than that in high-rank coal. Acidification and oxidation have different effects on the wettability of coal: Acidification increases the hydrophilicity of coal, whereas oxidation reduce the hydrophilicity of coal; and the hydrophilicity of coal samples treated by the optimized acidification and oxidation system is weakened. Reservoir simulation results show that acidification and oxidation lead to a recovery factor of 64.64% after 10 years of production, which is 19.72% higher than that without acidification and oxidation. The advantage of acidification and oxidation is 0.97% after 18 years of production. However, the acidification and oxidation saved 8 years of production time to achieve a close final recovery factor, which greatly reduces the operating costs. The optimized acidizing oxidation agent systems for CBM reservoirs with low, medium, and high ranks improved the desorption and permeability of the target reservoirs, and increase well production and recovery factor. This research provides technical support for stimulation practices of CBM reservoirs in the aforementioned blocks in China, as well as similar coal reservoirs in the world.

Polycrystalline FeMnAlNi-based alloys generally exhibit poor pseudoelasticity owing to grain constraint. A promising method to improve the pseudoelasticity involves increasing the grain size by directional recrystallisation (DR). To improve the efficiency of obtaining large grain size, the effect of DR parameters—hot zone temperature (HZT) and drawing velocity—on the columnar grain size and the mechanisms of grain growth were investigated. The results showed that samples of FeMnAlNiCo shape memory alloys (SMAs) with an average grain size of over 20 mm and the largest grain size exceeding 50 mm were obtained after DR. The apparent activation energy of the columnar grain growth for DR was ≈135 kJ/mol, which was much lower than that of the equiaxed grain growth for isothermal annealing (≈384 kJ/mol). The lateral growth of the columnar grains was probably because the boundaries between columnar grains tend to form random high-angle grain (HAG) boundaries. By incremental compression test, at an applied strain of 7.0%, nearly oriented single crystal exhibited a recoverable strain of ≈6.0%, while the polycrystal had a recoverable strain of only ≈3.4%. This work provides important guidance and inspires new strategies for microstructural control in FeMnAlNi-based SMAs.

Microorganisms become new sources for fabricating intricate micro/nano structures via bottom‐up approaches. Produced from nature, microorganism biotemplates exhibit unique structural and material features over thousands of years of revolution. They are considerably superior and cost‐effective for fabricating complex and heterogeneous structures when compared to other micro/nanofabrication techniques. Herein, the recent advances in biologically driven micro/nanofabrication, assembly, and actuation based on microorganisms are consolidated. Detailed development and recent advances of micro/nanoparticle fabrication, their ordered assembly, and controlled actuation properties, as well as certain typical engineering application examples, are mainly involved. The developing perspectives and challenges of microorganism‐based micro/nanofabrication are also discussed, aiming to inspire the relevant researches and promote the development in this field.

Phytolacca americana, introduced to China in the 20th century for its medicinal properties, has posed a significant ecological and agricultural challenge. Its prolific fruit production, high reproductive coefficient, adaptability, and toxic roots and fruits have led to the formation of monoculture communities, reducing native species diversity and posing threats to agriculture, human and animal health, and local ecosystems. Understanding its potential distribution patterns at a regional scale and its response to climate change is essential for effective monitoring, management, and control. In this study, we utilized the Maxent model to simulate potential habitat areas of P. americana across three timeframes (current, 2050s, and 2070s) under three climate change scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585). Leveraging data from 556 P. americana sites across China, we employed ROC curves to assess the prediction accuracy. Our findings highlight key environmental factors influencing P. americana’s geographical distribution, including the driest month’s precipitation, the coldest month’s minimum temperature, the wettest month’s precipitation, isothermality, and temperature annual range. Under current climate conditions, P. americana potentially inhabits 280.26 × 104 km2 in China, with a concentration in 27 provinces and cities within the Yangtze River basin and its southern regions. While future climate change scenarios do not drastically alter the total suitable area, the proportions of high and low-suitability areas decrease over time, shifting towards moderate suitability. Specifically, in the SSP126 scenario, the centroid of the predicted suitable area shifts northeastward and then southwestward. In contrast, in the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, the centroid shifts northward.

Setting the pace of life and constraining the role of members in food webs, body size can affect the structure and dynamics of communities across multiple scales of biological organization (e.g., from the individual to the ecosystem). However, its effects on shaping microbial communities, as well as underlying assembly processes, remain poorly known. Here, we analyzed microbial diversity in the largest urban lake in China and disentangled the ecological processes governing microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes using 16S and 18S amplicon sequencing. We found that pico/nano-eukaryotes (0.22−20 μm) and micro-eukaryotes (20−200 μm) showed significant differences in terms of both community composition and assembly processes even though they were characterized by similar phylotype diversity. We also found scale dependencies whereby micro-eukaryotes were strongly governed by environmental selection at the local scale and dispersal limitation at the regional scale. Interestingly, it was the micro-eukaryotes, rather than the pico/nano-eukaryotes, that shared similar distribution and community assembly patterns with the prokaryotes. This indicated that assembly processes of eukaryotes may be coupled or decoupled from prokaryotes’ assembly processes based on eukaryote cell size. While the results support the important influence of cell size, there may be other factors leading to different levels of assembly process coupling across size classes. Additional studies are needed to quantitatively parse the influence of cell size versus other factors as drivers of coordinated and divergent community assembly processes across microbial groups. Regardless of the governing mechanisms, our results show that there are clear patterns in how assembly processes are coupled across sub-communities defined by cell size. These size-structured patterns could be used to help predict shifts in microbial food webs in response to future disturbance.

Current knowledge on the fish gut microbiota has largely been obtained from experiments on laboratory-reared animals. Here, the crucian carp (Carassius auratus) with a mean weight of 159.9 ± 11.4 g (mean ± SD) were collected from their natural habitats (i.e., Wuhu lake and Poyang lake, China), and the gut microbiota were analysed by using the next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. We obtained more than 430,000 high-quality reads, which constituted more than 1200 operational taxonomy units (OTUs), revealing extremely diverse microbes in the fish gut. Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were detected as the prominent phyla (each > 1% of total abundance) within the gut microbiota, regardless of the host habitat or the gut segment (i.e., foregut vs. hindgut). Although the microbes in the hindgut were more diverse (OTU number, Shannon and Chao1; One-way Anova, p > 0.05) than in the foregut, the host habitat had a significant role in shaping the community structures (MRPP, ANOSIM, PERMANOVA, p < 0.01). Interestingly, we also detected a set of common OTUs, whereby genera Aeromonas and Cetobacterium might comprise the core gut microbiota of crucian carp.

Abstract Clarifying mechanisms underlying the ecological succession of gut microbiota is a central theme of gut ecology. Under experimental manipulations of zebrafish hatching and rearing environments, we test our core hypothesis that the host development will overwhelm environmental dispersal in governing fish gut microbial community succession due to host genetics, immunology, and gut nutrient niches. We find that zebrafish developmental stage substantially explains the gut microbial community succession, whereas the environmental effects do not significantly affect the gut microbiota succession from larvae to adult fish. The gut microbiotas of zebrafish are clearly separated according to fish developmental stages, and the degree of homogeneous selection governing gut microbiota succession is increasing with host development. This study advances our mechanistic understanding of the gut microbiota assembly and succession by integrating the host and environmental effects, which also provides new insights into the gut ecology of other aquatic animals.

The effects of invasive species on the local community (e.g., structure and stability) are highly environmentally dependent. Invasions of amphibious species usually take place in both xeric and humid environments, yet they are relatively poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the communities that were dominated by Alternanthera philoxeroides using ecological niche and interspecific association. A total of 66 species and 67 species were recorded in the xeric environment and humid environment, respectively. In both environments, species in family Gramineae, such as Echinochloa crusgalli and Cynodon dactylon, exhibited a higher level of importance values and greater ecological niche widths. The interspecific association and stability of the dominant species were weak and the dominant species were relatively independent of each other. In the xeric environment, A. philoxeroides was more compatible with E. crusgalli and C. dactylon in terms of ecological niche requirements and habitat suitability. In humid habitats, A. philoxeroides had a greater correlation with E. crusgalli, C. dactylon, and Persicaria lapathifolia, suggesting a higher possibility of concomitant occurrence. Overall, we suggested that during the revegetation after A. philoxeroides invasion, E. crusgalli and C. dactylon can be the alternative plants. Meanwhile, alternative control measures for A. philoxeroides invasion in agricultural fields should give more consideration to the use of plants with economic or ecological value.

The Coccinellidae are one of the most familiar beetle families, the ladybirds. Despite the great ecological and economic significance, the phylogenetic relationships of Coccinellidae remain poorly understood. One of the reasons is that the sequenced mitogenomes available for this family are very limited. We sequenced complete or nearly complete mitogenomes from seven species of the tribe Coccinellini with next-generation sequencing. All species have the same gene content and gene order as the putatively ancestral insect mitogenome. A large intergenic spacer region (> 890 bp) was found located between trnI and trnQ. The potential for using secondary structures of the large and small ribosomal subunits for phylogenetic reconstruction was predicted. The phylogenetic relationships were explored through comparative analyses across more than 30 coccinellid species. We performed phylogenetic analyses with both concatenation methods (Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference) and multispecies coalescent method (ASTRAL). Phylogenetic results strongly supported the monophyly of Coccinellidae. Within Coccinellidae, the Epilachnini and the Coccinellini including Halyziini were monophyletic, while the Scymnini and Coccidulini were non-monophyletic.

A long-standing dilemma for microbial analyses is how to handle and store samples, as it is widely assumed that the microbial diversity and community patterns would be affected by sample storage conditions. However, it is quite challenging to maintain consistency in field sampling, especially for water sample collection and storage. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of how sample storage conditions impact microbial community analyses and the magnitude of the potential storage effects, freshwater samples were collected and stored in bottles with lid closed and without lid at room temperature for up to 6 days. We revealed the dynamics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities under different storage conditions over time. The eukaryotic microbial communities changed at a faster rate than the prokaryotic microbial communities during storage. The alpha diversity of the eukaryotic microbial communities was not substantially influenced by container status or storage time for up to 12 h, but the beta diversity differed significantly between the control and all treatment samples. By contrast, no significant changes of either the alpha or beta diversity of the prokaryotic microbial communities were observed within 12 h of room-temperature storage, regardless of the container status. The potential interactions between microbial taxa were more complex when samples were stored in sealed bottles, and the deterministic processes played an increasingly important role in shaping the freshwater microbial communities with storage time. Our results suggest that water samples collected and stored without refrigeration for no more than 12 h may still be useful for downstream analyses of prokaryotic microbial communities. If the eukaryotic microbial communities are desired, storage of water samples should be limited to 3 h at room temperature.

DNA based sequencing technology has revolutionized the field of microbial ecology and environmental studies. However, biases can be introduced at all experimental steps and, thus, affect the interpretation of microbial community. So far, previous studies on the biases introduced from the key steps of DNA extraction and primer sets mainly focused on the bacterial communities in soil or sediment samples, while little is known about the effect on the eukaryotic microbial communities. Here, we studied the effects of three different DNA extraction kits on both prokaryotic and micro-eukaryotic communities by 16S and 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and further disentangled the influence of primer choice on the micro-eukaryotic communities. Our results showed that the FastDNA SPIN Kit for Soil and DNeasy PowerSoil Kit produced much higher DNA yield with good reproducibility, and observed more eukaryotic OTUs compared to the MinkaGene DNA extraction kit, but all three kits exhibited comparable ability in recovering bacterial alpha diversity. Of the two primer sets, both targeting the V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene, the TAR primer set detected higher number of unique OTUs than the EK primer set, while the EK primer set resulted in longer amplicons and better reproducibility between replicates. Based on our findings, we recommend using the DNeasy PowerSoil Kit with the EK primer set to capture the abundant micro-eukaryotic taxa from freshwater sediment samples. If a more complete picture of the eukaryotic microbial community is desired, the TAR primer set in combination with the FastDNA SPIN Kit is more efficient in this study.

A number of species in Bipolaris are important plant pathogens. Due to a limited number of synapomorphic characters, it is difficult to perform species identification and to estimate phylogeny of Bipolaris based solely on morphology. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Bipolaris sorokiniana, and presented the detailed annotation of the genome. The B. sorokiniana mitochondrial genome is 137,775 bp long, and contains two ribosomal RNA genes, 12 core protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes. In addition, two ribosomal protein genes (rps3 gene and rps5 gene) and the fungal mitochondrial RNase P gene (rnpB) are identified. The large genome size is mostly determined by the presence of numerous intronic and intergenic regions. A total of 28 introns are inserted in eight core protein-coding genes. Together with the published mitochondrial genome sequences, we conducted a preliminary phylogenetic inference of Dothideomycetes under various datasets and substitution models. The monophyly of Capnodiales, Botryosphaeriales and Pleosporales are consistently supported in all analyses. The Venturiaceae forms an independent lineage, with a distant phylogenetic relationship to Pleosporales. At the family level, the Mycosphaerellaceae, Botryosphaeriaceae. Phaeosphaeriaceae, and Pleosporaceae are recognized in the majority of trees.

Phasmatodea represents an order of hemimetabolous insects. This group includes species with extreme forms of masquerade crypsis, whereby they imitate twigs, bark, lichen, moss, and leaves. In this study, we sequenced and annotated three mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from Phasmatodea. The lengths of the novel mitogenomes range from 14,162 bp to 15,879 bp. The gene content and organization correspond to those inferred for the ancestral insect. We conducted phylogenetic analyses together with the existing mitogenomes of polyneopterans and mayflies. In most cases, the Phasmatodea was non-monophyletic, with Embioptera and Zoraptera nested inside. The mitogenome sequences from Embioptera and Zoraptera suffered from high substitution rates and displayed very long branches in phylogenetic trees. The monophyletic Phasmatodea was recovered only when the analysis employed the site-heterogeneous CAT-GTR model in PhyloBayes and used the nucleotide dataset PCG_nt. The Euphasmatodea was well established by various data types and inference methods. In addition, the clade Heteropterygidae and the subfamilies Lonchodinae and Necrosciinae were strongly supported. The Australasian clade Lanceocercata was recovered across analyses. However, the Clitumninae was non-monophyletic.

In this article, we present the nearly complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the weevil beetle Apion squamigerum (Curculionoidea, Brentidae), assembled using data from Illumina next generation sequencing (NGS). This mitogenome was found to be very large, with the total length of 18,562 bp. Two trnM genes were identified. A large non-coding intergenic spacer spanning 1,949 bp occurred between trnI and trnM2. Combined with 111 existing weevil mitogenomes, we conducted phylogenetic reconstructions based on various datasets under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Firstly, phylogenetic analyses robustly supported a sister group of A. squamigerum and Rhopalapion longirostre, namely, that two species of Apioninae (Brentidae) formed a clade. Within the entire Curculionoidea, the Nemonychidae diverged firstly, following the families Anthribidae and Attelabidae. In addition, a large clade comprising the sister families Brentidae and Curculionidae was strongly supported in all trees.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding metamaterials have become indispensable in reducing electromagnetic (EM) wave radiation pollution. In this study, a flexible and tunable EM meta-atom was proposed and fabricated for EMI shielding metamaterials. The meta-atom was composed of a split ring resonator made with silver nanowire (AgNW) networks attached onto a biaxially pre-stretched poly(dimethylsiloxane) film. The structures and morphologies of samples prepared under different pre-stretching conditions showed that the AgNW networks on the biaxially pre-stretched samples are more stable than those on the unstretched and uniaxially pre-stretched samples. This endowed the meta-atoms with excellent electrical conductivity and reliability under various strain conditions. The tunable performance of the as-prepared materials with an AgNW area density of 600 mg/m2 was remarkable, covering as much as 90% of the entire X-band (8–12 GHz). This strategy could open new avenues toward the development of reconfigurable EMI shielding metamaterials, particularly for the wide-frequency range applications. Despite the future price of individual stocks has long been proved to be unpredictable and irregular according to the EMH, the turning points (or the reversal) of the stock indices trend still remain the rules to follow. Therefore, this study mainly aimed to provide investors with new strategies in buying ETFs of the indices, which not only avoided the instability of individual stocks, but were also able to get a high profit within weeks. Famous theories like Gann theory and the Elliott wave theory suggest that as part of the nature, market regulations and economic activities of human beings shall conform to the laws of nature and the operation of the universe. They further refined only the rules related to specific timepoints and the time cycle rather than the traditional analysis of the complex economic and social factors, which is, to some extent, similar to what the Chinese traditional culture proposes: that every impact on and change in the human society is always attributable to changes in the nature. The study found that the turns of the stock indices trend were inevitable at specific timepoints while the strength and intensity of the turns were uncertain, affected by various factors by then, which meant the market was intertwined with both certainty and uncertainty at the same time. The analysis was based on the data of the Shanghai Index, the Second Board Index and the Shenzhen Index, the three major indices that represent almost all aspects of the Chinese stock market, for the past decades. It could effectively reduce the heteroscedasticity, instability and irregularity of time series models by replacing 250 daily high-frequency data with the extreme points near every twenty-four solar terms per year. The forecasts focusing on the future stock trend of the all-solar-terms group and the eight-solar-terms group were proved accurate. What is more, the indices trend was at a high probability to turn in a range of four days at each solar term. The alert period also provided the readers with a practical example of how it works in the real investment environment.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, is the most malignant and still has no cure. However, the novel role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma is attracting extensive attention. LncRNAs are transcribed RNA molecules over 200 nucleotides long that do not encode proteins. Unlike small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs (miRNAs), lncRNAs have more complex secondary and tertiary structures that enable them to interact with DNA, RNA, and proteins and perform multiple regulatory functions. LncRNAs act as molecular sponges, absorbing and sequestering other biomolecules, particularly miRNAs, thereby preventing these molecules from performing their normal functions. LncRNAs influence glioblastoma through gene expression regulation, molecular sponge capacity, epigenetic modulation, and signaling pathway interactions. In glioblastoma, a large number of lncRNAs have been found to be abnormally expressed, affecting tumor growth, invasion and resistance to treatment. Due to its regulatory role and disease-specific expression patterns, lncRNA has become a potential biomarker for glioblastoma and a promising new therapeutic target. This paper discusses the spongy role of lncRNAs in glioblastoma and its potential therapeutic applications, which will lay a foundation for our understanding of glioblastoma biology and the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in the future. Abstract Background Extreme weather events like heatwaves and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have a synergistic effect on mortality, but research on the synergistic effect of cold waves and PM2.5 on outpatient visits for respiratory disease, especially at high altitudes in climate change-sensitive areas, is lacking. Methods we collected time-series data on meteorological, air pollution, and outpatient visits for respiratory disease in Xining. We examined the associations between cold waves, PM2.5, and outpatient visits for respiratory disease using a time-stratified case-crossover approach and distributional lag nonlinear modeling. Our analysis also calculated the relative excess odds due to interaction (REOI), proportion attributable to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S). We additionally analyzed cold waves over time to verify climate change. Results Under different definitions of cold waves, the odds ratio for the correlation between cold waves and outpatient visits for respiratory disease ranged from 0.95 (95% CI: 0.86, 1.05) to 1.58 (1.47, 1.70). Exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with an increase in outpatient visits for respiratory disease. We found that cold waves can synergize with PM2.5 to increase outpatient visits for respiratory disease (REOI > 0, AP > 0, S > 1), decreasing with stricter definitions of cold waves and longer durations. Cold waves’ independent effect decreased over time, but their interaction effect persisted. From 8.1 to 21.8% of outpatient visits were due to cold waves and high-level PM2.5. People aged 0–14 and ≥ 65 were more susceptible to cold waves and PM2.5, with a significant interaction for those aged 15–64 and ≥ 65. Conclusion Our study fills the gap on how extreme weather and PM2.5 synergistically affect respiratory disease outpatient visits in high-altitude regions. The synergy of cold waves and PM2.5 increases outpatient visits for respiratory disease, especially in the elderly. Cold wave warnings and PM2.5 reduction have major public health benefits.

Abstract Objective Amidst climate change, extensive research has centered on the health impacts of heatwaves, yet the consequences of cold spells, particularly in cooler, higher-altitude regions, remain under-explored. Methods Analyzing climatic data and non-accidental mortality in Xining, China’s second-highest provincial capital, from 2016 to 2020, this study defines cold spells as daily mean temperatures below the 10th, 7.5th, or 5th percentiles for 2–4 consecutive days. A time-stratified case-crossover approach and distributional lag nonlinear modeling were used to assess the link between cold spells and mortality, calculating attributable fractions (AFs) and numbers (ANs) of deaths. The study also examined the impact of cold spells over different periods and analyzed the value of a statistical life (VSL) loss in 2018, a year with frequent cold spells. Stratified analyses by sex, age, and education level were conducted. Results A significant association was found between cold spells and non-accidental mortality, with a relative risk of 1.548 (95% CI: 1.300, 1.845). The AF was 33.48%, with an AN of 9,196 deaths during the study’s cold period. A declining trend in mortality risk was observed from 2019–2020. The 2018 VSL was approximately 2.875 billion CNY, about 1.75% of Xining’s GDP. Higher risks were noted among males, individuals aged ≥ 65, and those with lower education levels. Conclusion The findings underscore the vulnerability and economic losses of high-altitude cities to cold spells. Implementing interventions such as improved heating, educational programs, and community support is vital for mitigating these adverse health effects.

The advanced treatment of secondary effluents was investigated by employing heterogeneous catalytic ozonation integrated with a biological aerated filter (BAF) process. The results indicated that catalytic ozonation with the prepared catalyst (MnxCuyOz/γ-Fe2O3) significantly enhanced the performance of pollutant removal and broke up macromolecules into molecular substances by the generated hydroxyl radicals. These molecular substances were easily absorbed by microorganisms in the microbial membrane reactor. In the BAF process, chemical oxygen demand (COD) (chemical oxygen demand) decreased from 54.26 to 32.56 mg/L, while in catalytic ozonation coupled with the BAF, COD could be reduced to 14.65 mg/L (removal ratio 73%). Under the same condition, NH4+-N decreased from 77.43 to 22.69 mg/L and 15.73 mg/L (removal ratio 70%) in the BAF and the catalytic ozonation coupled with BAF, respectively. In addition, the model that highly correlated influent COD to effluent COD and reactor height for filler could predict the removal ratio of COD of the BAF system. Based on the microbial community analysis, ozone in the solution had a certain screening effect on microorganisms, which helped to better adapt to the ozone-containing environment. Therefore, the integrated process with its efficient, economic, and sustainable advantages was suitable for the advanced treatment of secondary effluents. HIGHLIGHTS The biodegradability of municipal wastewater was improved after ozonation.; The COD at different BAF heights as a function of influent COD was established.; Catalytic ozonation coupled with BAF for advanced treatment of wastewater was feasible.;

MIL-100(Fe) was modified by amino groups (MIL-100(Fe)-NH2) to enhance the removal of antimonate (Sb(V)) with low concentration (50−200 μg/L) from natural water through batch adsorption experiments. With the initial Sb(V) concentration up to 200 μg/L, the residual Sb(V) concentration after treated by MIL-100(Fe)-NH2 was only 3.52 ± 0.131 μg/L, lower than the drinking water standards (5 μg/L) in China, while that was much higher (94.2 ± 3.52 μg/L) after pristine MIL-100(Fe) treatment. Based on results of XPS analysis, and adsorption kinetics and isotherms, we concluded that Sb(V) substituted the terminal −OH groups of MIL-100(Fe) to form inner-sphere complexes by coordination reactions with Fe nodes and be adsorbed by hydrogen bonding as well. The grafted amino groups (−NH2) adsorbed Sb(V) by hydrogen bonding and facilitated the coordination reactions between Sb(V) and Fe nodes. The higher KL value (0.0116 ± 0.00,118 L/μg) obtained by fitting with the Langmuir isotherm model, while that of unmodified MIL-100(Fe) was 4.74 × 10−4 ± 5.85 × 10−5 L/μg, also confirmed that the −NH2 groups greatly enhanced the affinity between MIL-100(Fe) and Sb(V). Furthermore, MIL-100(Fe)-NH2 still worked nicely in a wide pH range (2 − 12), with varied ionic strength (0.05 µmol/L−1.5 mol/L), coexisting ions (CO32−, NO3−, SO42−, Cl−, H2PO4−), and even in the real water bodies. Additionally, MIL-100(Fe)-NH2 exhibited good reusability and low Fe leaching (99.92 μg/L). We hope MIL-100(Fe)-NH2 become a candidate for effective removal of Sb(V), even other heavy metals from natural waterbodies.

CO2 corrosion is one of the important threats to the safe operation of oil and gas pipelines. Generally, the pitting often has a greater depth than that of the uniform corrosion and it is likely to be concealed, bringing about particularly serious hazards. In order to study the ion concentration distribution within the corrosion pits and verify the existing corrosion prediction models, the relative integral intensity was defined based on the characteristic peak of the bicarbonate in Raman spectroscopy and that of the background solution water with the internal standard method, and the quantitative relationship between the relative integrated intensity and the bicarbonate molar concentration was established in the range of 0.04-0.6 mol/L. Meanwhile, a set of flow cell system based on the in-situ laser Raman spectroscopy was designed, and the bicarbonate molar concentration was determined at different depths of artificial pits on the X65 pipeline steel in the flow environment. The experimental results show that: the bicarbonate molar concentration in the pit decreases gradually within 500 μm from the pit bottom to approach the bulk solution concentration as the distance increases, and it is basically constant when the distance is greater than 500 μm. The experimental method for determining the distribution of bicarbonate molar concentration in the pits could provide important reference for the development of pitting theory and the verification of corrosion calculation models.

Cancer is a major disease endangering human health. More and more studies have shown that microorganisms play an extremely important role in the occurrence, development and treatment of tumors. As a very promising tumor treatment strategy, immunotherapy has also been proved to have a great relationship with microorganisms. Here, the authors review the contribution of the microbiota to cancer and the research on its impact on cancer immunotherapy. We also highlight the possible mechanism of their interaction and outlined the potential application of microbiota in tumor immunotherapy.

DNA methylation plays a significant role in transcriptional regulation by repressing activity. Change of the DNA methylation level is an important factor affecting the expression of target genes and downstream phenotypes. Because current experimental technologies can only assay a small proportion of CpG sites in the human genome, it is urgent to develop reliable computational models for predicting genome-wide DNA methylation. Here, we proposed a novel algorithm that accurately extracted sequence complexity features (seven features) and developed a support-vector-machine-based prediction model with integration of the reported DNA composition features (trinucleotide frequency and GC content, 65 features) by utilizing the methylation profiles of embryonic stem cells in human. The prediction results from 22 human chromosomes with size-varied windows showed that the 600-bp window achieved the best average accuracy of 94.7%. Moreover, comparisons with two existing methods further showed the superiority of our model, and cross-species predictions on mouse data also demonstrated that our model has certain generalization ability. Finally, a statistical test of the experimental data and the predicted data on functional regions annotated by ChromHMM found that six out of 10 regions were consistent, which implies reliable prediction of unassayed CpG sites. This data article contains the synthesis and structure information of a new Fe-base sodium metaphosphate compound, which is related to the research article entitled ‘Synthesis, structural, magnetic and sodium deinsertion/insertion properties of a sodium ferrous metaphosphate, NaFe(PO3)3’ by Lin et al. [1]. The research article has reported a new Fe-base metaphosphate compound NaFe(PO3)3, which is discovered during the exploration of the new potential electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this data article, the synthesized process of this metaphosphate compound and the morphology of the obtained sample will be provided. The high-power XRD Rietveld refinement is applied to determine the crystal structure of this metaphosphate compound and the refinement result including the main refinement parameters, atomic coordinate and some important lattace parameters are stored in the cif file. Also, the refined structure has be evaluated by checkcif report and the result is also provided as the supplementary materials.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is considered as an important material for nuclear engineering due to its excellent properties. Changing the carbon content in SiC can regulate and control its elastic and thermodynamic properties, but a simulation study of the effect of carbon content on the sputtering (caused by the helium ions) of SiC is still lacking. In this work, we used the Monte-Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation methods to study the effects of carbon concentration, incidence energy, incident angle, and target temperature on the sputtering yield of SiC. The results show that the incident ions’ energy and angle have a significant effect on sputtering yield of SiC when the carbon concentration in SiC is around 62 at %, while the target temperature has a little effect on the sputtering yield of SiC. Our work might provide theoretical support for the experimental research and engineering application of carbon fiber-reinforced SiC that be used as the plasma-facing material in tokamak fusion reactors.

Wind power generation is different from traditional power generation in which wind power output is highly stochastic and spatio-temporally dependent. In the optimal scheduling problem of wind power grid-connected power system, ensuring the optimal execution of power scheduling in different wind power scenarios is the key of the decision-making problem. Therefore, high quality wind power scenario generation is of great importance. The spatiotemporal correlation of the output power of wind power plants are characterized based on Gaussian stochastic process and spatiotemporal covariance function, and the joint probability distribution is established by the Pair Copula model, and specific scenarios are implemented by the method of empirical probability inverse transformation. A variety of scene metrics of the generated scene are generated, which verifies the superiority of the generated scene. Finally, based on the modified IEEE 6-bus system, a mixed integer programming model for the unit output of the power system is established to solve the problems in different scenarios and verify the economic advantages of the scenario generation method in the dispatching problem of wind power grid connection.
