Summary: Soft actuators are valued for their adaptability and diverse applications but often face challenges like slow response, high activation energy, and high energy consumption. To address these issues, we developed a graphene-assembled film (GAF) via the redox method, characterized by high thermal conductivity, conductivity, and stiffness. Using GAF as a photothermal and electrothermal driver, we engineered a sandwich-structured metamaterial (SSM) by combining two polymers with vastly different thermal expansion coefficients. The SSM achieved rapid response (0.18 mm⁻1), surpassing conventional designs in response speed (226.2% faster) and curvature (249.1% higher). This metamaterial enables soft fixtures with superior gripping capabilities and low energy consumption, handling up to eight times the object mass of traditional designs. This work highlights advances in multi-stimulus metamaterials, offering significant implications for the development of high-performance soft actuators.

Globally, agriculture is experiencing sustainability challenges including excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic inputs, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, climate change, etc. In countries like China, farmers have experienced changes in the rainfall pattern and extreme heat and cold. Accordingly, agricultural sustainability policies support sustainable practices like integrated pest management, improved nutrient management, agroforestry systems, crop rotation, no tillage, conservation efforts, and the use of organic manure and fertilizer, as well as sustainable technologies, inputs, and innovations as a mitigation measure. However, there is little information available on farmers practices, and the concept of sustainable farming is dimly understood, resulting in divergent views among numerous stakeholders, particularly farmers, about what exactly defines sustainable agriculture. As a result, the necessity for sustainable agriculture is becoming a problem. The study therefore aims to measure smallholder farmers’ adherence to sustainable agricultural practices and assess the factors that influence farmers’ adherence to sustainable practices. Survey approach was adopted to collect data from 405 smallholder farmers using sustainable agricultural technologies to measure farmer’s adherence to the practices. Using multivariate probit analysis, the study discovered that whereas gender had no significant impact on farmers’ adherence, age had a substantial impact. Income had favourable correlation with the sustainable practices, but not significant with overall adherence. Remarkably, farmers’ commitment to adhere was encouraged by their neighbours’ activities, organic farming methods, and farmers who had engaged in organic farming. Farmers’ adherence was affected by farmers’ concern about facing penalties from market regulators or the government, but not for monitoring and regulation. Lastly, even though the smallholder farmers thought that implementing sustainable practices was essential to achieving sustainable agriculture, this did not alter their will to do so.

Abstract Background Robotic‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) can achieve traditional clinical outcomes comparable to those of video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). However, patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) during the early period after RATS and VATS remain unclear. This study aimed to utilize longitudinal electronic PRO (ePRO) assessments to evaluate symptom burden and functional status between these approaches from patients' perspective. Methods This study comprised patients who underwent lobectomy via RATS or VATS for non‐small cell lung cancer. We collected multiple‐time‐point PROs data from the prospective longitudinal study via an ePRO system. Symptom severity and function status were assessed using the perioperative symptom assessment for patients undergoing lung surgery and were analyzed between groups using linear mixed‐effects models. Results Of the 164 patients, 42 underwent RATS and 122 underwent VATS. After propensity score matching (PSM), 42 RATS and 84 VATS exhibited similar baseline characteristics. Abstract Recently, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) has aroused widespread discussion in the scientific community as a mode of RNA modification. m6A comprises writers, erasers, and readers, which regulates RNA production, nuclear export, and translation and is very important for human health. A large number of studies have found that the regulation of m6A is closely related to the occurrence and invasion of tumors, while the homeostasis and function of the tumor microenvironment (TME) determine the occurrence and development of tumors to some extent. TME is composed of a variety of immune cells (T cells, B cells, etc.) and nonimmune cells (tumor-associated mesenchymal stem cells (TA-MSCs), cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), etc.). Current studies suggest that m6A is involved in regulating the function of various cells in the TME, thereby affecting tumor progression. In this manuscript, we present the composition of m6A and TME, the relationship between m6A methylation and characteristic changes in TME, the role of m6A methylation in TME, and potential therapeutic strategies to provide new perspectives for better treatment of tumors in clinical work.

Summary: Anti-icing and de-icing are vital for infrastructure maintenance. While carbon-based materials with photothermal or electrothermal effects have advanced, they face challenges like environmental dependence, poor resistance, high energy consumption, and complex manufacturing. Here, we developed a scalable, hybrid metamaterial driven by photothermal/electrothermal for all-weather anti-icing/de-icing. Its nanostructured surface delays icing by 360 s at −30°C, breaking records across a wide temperature range. The porous structure enhances light absorption, achieving a delayed icing time of 2500 s at −20°C under one sunlight. The graphene film’s high conductivity allows rapid de-icing with 1.6W power. After 720 h of outdoor exposure, the metamaterial retained a contact angle above 150°, confirming durability. More critically, we have demonstrated that the metamaterial can be manufactured on a large scale, which is essential for improving the economics of the anti-icing/de-icing sector.

This work optimizes the performance of the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) to increase its efficiency and strengthen its validity in portable power generation. Specifically, this work focuses on optimizing vapor-feed supply techniques and incorporating water management layers (WMLs) to analyze their effect on methanol crossover. The significance of the vapor-feed supply technique is to enhance the reaction kinetics of the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and enable the use of pure methanol (MeOH) as a fuel. Pure methanol is the ideal fuel for the DMFC as it has the highest possible energy density compared to dilute concentrations. However, use of pure methanol is hindered by methanol crossover, which is regarded as the largest technical barrier to commercializing DMFCs. This study measured methanol crossover through a CO2 sensor attached to the cathode outlet and added hydrophobic WMLs to the cathode to alleviate the methanol crossover. The hydrophobic WMLs increased the mass transfer resistance to generate a pressure gradient that encourages water backflow for use in both the proton exchange membrane (PEM) and anode reactions. The influence of vapor flow rate and fuel concentration will also be explored to show their impact on performance and methanol crossover. Likewise, long-term consumption and durability tests were conducted with and without a WML to dictate the WML’s superior fuel efficiency, total efficiency, energy density, and reduced methanol crossover using pure methanol. The addition of the WML increased the energy density of the vapor feed DMFC, using pure methanol, from 705.9 Wh kgMeOH-1 to 867.7 Wh kgMeOH-1 and lowered the crossover current density by 14.8 % when discharged at a constant 200 mA cm−2.

Summary: Background: The accurate evaluation of axillary lymph node (ALN) response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer holds great value. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence system utilising multiregional dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and clinicopathological characteristics to predict axillary pathological complete response (pCR) after NAC in breast cancer. Methods: This study included retrospective and prospective datasets from six medical centres in China between May 2018 and December 2023. A fully automated integrated system based on deep learning (FAIS-DL) was built to perform tumour and ALN segmentation and axillary pCR prediction sequentially. The predictive performance of FAIS-DL was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. RNA sequencing analysis were conducted on 45 patients to explore the biological basis of FAIS-DL. Findings: 1145 patients (mean age, 50 years ±10 [SD]) were evaluated. Among these patients, 506 were in the training and validation sets (axillary pCR rate of 40.3%), 127 in the internal test set (axillary pCR rate of 37.8%), 414 in the pooled external test set (axillary pCR rate of 48.8%), and 98 in the prospective test set (axillary pCR rate of 43.9%). For predicting axillary pCR, FAIS-DL achieved AUCs of 0.95, 0.93, and 0.94 in the internal test set, pooled external test set, and prospective test set, respectively, which were also significantly higher than those of the clinical model and deep learning models based on single-regional DCE-MRI (all P

The double-stator superconducting brushless machine (DS-SCBM) combines high torque density and excellent static sealing characteristics, as well as advantages in reliability and cost-effectiveness. To ensure the long-term stability of the superconducting magnet and Dewar (SCMD) system, this study evaluates the pressure-bearing capacity and heat leakage from the support frame, selecting appropriate materials and dimensions. Furthermore, a model of the thermal and mechanical fields for the SCMD system is developed using finite element analysis which assesses the impact of various reinforcement structures on the mechanical and thermal properties of the superconducting (SC) magnet. Based on this analysis, the dimensions of the reinforcement structures, Dewars, and vacuum interlayer are optimized. Subsequently, efforts are made to manufacture the designed system and its performance is tested.

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a prevalent vascular disorder that has been consistently associated with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). The diagnosis of CSVD continues to rely on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Epidemiological data indicate that the characteristic MRI features of CSVD, including white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and lacunar infarction, are very common among individuals over 40 years of age in community studies. This prevalence poses a significant burden on many low- and middle-income families. The amygdala plays a crucial role in integrating sensory and associative information to regulate emotional cognition. Although many previous studies have linked alterations in the amygdala to various diseases, such as depression, there has been little research on CSVD-associated alterations in the amygdala due to the complexity of CSVD. In this paper, we summarize the various imaging features of CSVD and discuss the correlation between amygdala changes and VCI. We also explore how new neuroimaging methods can assess amygdala changes early, laying a foundation for future comprehensive exploration of the pathogenesis of CSVD.

Abstract As a type of magnetic device being able to realize contact‐free power transmission together with sufficient volumetric torque density, the field‐modulated magnetic gear (FMMG) has become a promising alternative to the mechanical gear having rigid construction yet suffering lots of issues generated by the continuous teeth friction. The conventional magnetic gears (MGs) that behave as simple copies of their mechanical counterparts and can be roughly defined as origination of the FMMG are briefly introduced at first. Subsequently, the topology and material advancements proposed to improve operational performance of the FMMG are comprehensively summarised so as to clarify its current development status. Finally, potential applications of the FMMG due to its inherent advantages are compared against the existent challenges. The review aims to provide referable guidelines for researchers working at the field of high‐performance MGs.

Understanding the behavior of pressure increases in lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells is essential for prolonging the lifespan of Li-ion battery cells and minimizing the safety risks associated with cell aging. This work investigates the effects of C-rates and temperature on pressure behavior in commercial lithium cobalt oxide (LCO)/graphite pouch cells. The battery is volumetrically constrained, and the mechanical pressure response is measured using a force gauge as the battery is cycled. The effect of the C-rate (1C, 2C, and 3C) and ambient temperature (10 °C, 25 °C, and 40 °C) on the increase in battery pressure is investigated. By analyzing the change in the minimum, maximum, and pressure difference per cycle, we identify and discuss the effects of different factors (i.e., SEI layer damage, electrolyte decomposition, lithium plating) on the pressure behavior. Operating at high C-rates or low temperatures rapidly increases the residual pressure as the battery is cycled. The results suggest that lithium plating is predominantly responsible for battery expansion and pressure increase during the cycle aging of Li-ion cells rather than electrolyte decomposition. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements can support our conclusions. Postmortem analysis of the aged cells was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to confirm the occurrence of lithium plating and film growth on the anodes of the aged cells. This study demonstrates that pressure measurements can provide insights into the aging mechanisms of Li-ion batteries and can be used as a reliable predictor of battery degradation.

Abstract Background Patients with pulmonary nodules (PNs) often suffer from the psychological burden of their disease and trap in sleep problems. This is insufficiently identified and addressed in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological distress and sleep quality among PN patients and identify potential risk or protective factors for sleep quality. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study, which included 731 PN patients who visited the thoracic clinic of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital. Each participant completed a structured questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The reliability of the HADS (Cronbach’s α = 0.944) and PSQI (Cronbach’s α = 0. 0.757) in this study was satisfactory. Sown mixed grassland is rarely used for livestock raising and grazing; however, different forages can provide various nutrients for livestock, which may be beneficial to animal health and welfare. We established a sown mixed grassland and adopted a rotational grazing system, monitored the changes in aboveground biomass and sheep weights during the summer grazing period, measured the nutrients of forage by near-infrared spectroscopy, tested the contents of medium- and long-chain fatty acids by gas chromatography, and explored an efficient sheep fattening system that is suitable for agro-pastoral interlacing areas. Topology optimization of heterogeneous structures can find significant use in a wide range of applications, and its fabrication has been made possible by recent advances in additive manufacturing. However, the optimization procedure is computationally expensive, as each structural update requires the re-evaluation of the properties. The computational time is the major limiting factor in large-scale and complex structural optimization. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model for predicting effective thermal conductivity inspired by the VGG networks is proposed. Trained using 130,000 unique binary images, the model achieves high predictive accuracy. Specifically, it shows a mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 0.35% in testing when the thermal conductivity of the solid is ten times larger than the fluid, and when the thermal conductivities assigned are that of aluminum and water, the MAPE is 2.35%. The prediction time is 15 ms for a single image with 128 × 128 pixels, which is 3 to 5 orders of magnitude faster than a finite volume simulation. When employed in topology optimization, the CNN retains a MAPE between 0.67% and 11.8% for different cases. The CNN model correctly predicts trends in effective thermal conductivity and improves the structure to close proximity of a theoretical maximum in all cases.

Abstract Alfalfa is a high-quality forage legume species that is widely cultivated at high latitudes worldwide. However, a decrease in cold tolerance in early spring seriously affects regrowth and persistence of alfalfa. There has been limited research on the metabolomic changes that occur during de-acclimation. In this study, a liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry system was used to compare the metabolites in two alfalfa cultivars during a simulated overwintering treatment. In four pairwise comparisons, 367 differential metabolites were identified, of which 31 were annotated according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Summary: Osteocytes are the mechano-sensors of bones. Large gradient high-static magnetic fields (LG-HMFs) produce stable, high-precision, and non-attenuation mechanical forces. We discovered that magnetic forces opposite to gravity inhibited MLO-Y4 osteocyte proliferation and viability by inducing structural damage and apoptosis. In contrast, magnetic force loading in the same direction as that of gravity promoted the proliferation and inhibited apoptosis of MLO-Y4 osteocytes. Differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis after magnetic force stimulation indicated that the ECM-integrin-CSK axis responded most significantly to mechanical signals. Wisp2 was the most significant DEG between the 12 T upward and downward groups, showing the highest correlation with the Wnt pathway according to the STRING protein interaction database. Explaining the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which mechanical stimuli influence bone remodeling is currently the focus of osteocyte-related research. Our findings provide insights into the effects of LG-HMFs on bone cells, which have further implications in clinical practice.

With knowledge of only a few effective properties of a porous structure, the applicability of the structure for a given system can quickly be determined. This study numerically simulates the effective thermal conductivity, permeability, and stiffness of high porosity structures. Commonly used isotropic architected porous structures are compared with commercially available stochastic metal foams. The architected structures include body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, shell-based triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS), and hybrid foam (HF) composed of beam and shell with multiple adjustable parameters. The simulated effective properties touch on the applicability in heat transfer, fluid flow, and mechanically stressful situations. The dimensionless effective properties of the structures are presented in graphical form to clearly illustrate structurally dependent properties. Compared to the stochastic metal foams, the architected structures (BCC, TPMS, and most HF) showed higher effective thermal conductivities and permeabilities. This indicates a potential to improve the efficiency of a thermal or fluid flow system by replacing the stochastic foam with architected foam. Additionally, the HF structure shows broad tunability of specific properties. All effective properties simulated were rendered dimensionless to only reflect the impact of topology, and plotted in charts to show trends. These charts can aid in the selection of porous structures in diverse applications.

The development of an ideal cathode for Li-O2 battery (LOB) has been a great challenge in achieving high discharge capacity, enhanced stability, and longevity. The formation of undesired and irreversible discharge products on the surface of current cathode materials limit the life span of the LOB. In this study, we report the systematic electrochemical study to compare the performance of LOB employing a unique graphitic nanostructured carbon architecture, i.e., vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (VACNF) arrays, as the cathode materials. Transition metal (Ni) and noble metal alloy (PtRu) are further deposited on the VACNF array as electrocatalysts to improve the discharge/charge processes at the cathode. The structure of as-prepared electrodes was examined with the field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The LOB with VACNF-Ni electrode delivered the highest specific and areal discharge capacities (14.92 Ah·g−1, 4.32 mAh·cm−2) at 0.1 mA·cm−2 current density as compared with VACNF-PtRu (9.07 Ah·g−1, 2.62 mAh·cm−2), bare VACNF (5.55 Ah·g−1, 1.60 mAh·cm−2) and commercial Vulcan XC (3.83 Ah·g−1, 1.91 mAh·cm−2). Cycling stability tests revealed the superior performance of VACNF-PtRu with 27 cycles as compared with VACNF-Ni (13 cycles), VACNF (8 cycles), and Vulcan XC (3 cycles). The superior cycling stability of VACNF-PtRu can be attributed to its ability to suppress the formation of Li2CO3 during the discharge cycle, as elucidated by XPS analysis of discharged samples. We also investigated the impact of carbon cloth and carbon fiber as cathode electrode substrate on the performance of LOB.

In order to improve the safety and reliability of electric vehicle wireless charging, foreign object detection is an indispensable auxiliary function. In this paper, the equivalent model of foreign object detection circuit is firstly established, and then the foreign object detection principle based on active detection coil is analyzed from the angle of the circuit and magnetic circuit. Then the optimization scheme of metal foreign object detection coil is proposed through simulation comparison and analysis. The results show that the design proposed in this paper can increase the maximum value of |Bz| to 3.6 mT, effectively improving the accuracy of metal foreign object detection.

With the proposal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality policy, electric vehicle as a clean new energy transportation tool has attracted more and more attention. Battery swapping station (BSS) is an alternative method to charge electric vehicles (EVs). This paper summarizes the development and present situation of battery swapping station and analyzes the distribution probability model of EVs’ arrival based on the historical data of electrical swapping station, which approximately obeys Poisson distribution. The convergence accuracy of traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm is improved by combining the particle swarm optimization algorithm with the immune algorithm, which can find the global optimal solution more easily. Then an economic scheduling method for battery swapping station based on monte carlo simulation was proposed, and the function of BSS as an energy storage device to power grid (B2G) is analyzed. Next a mathematical model of multi-objective joint optimization of battery swapping station based on B2G technology is established, considering the revenue of operator, RMS of grid load and peak–valley difference as functions. Finally, the simulation analysis of this model is carried out. The optimization results of ordered and disordered charging scheduling with B2G and without B2G are compared to verify the effectiveness and superiority of this model. It can be seen that B2G root mean square and peak–valley difference decreased by 15.72% and 14.63% respectively, and the revenue of battery swapping station increased by 1.4%. Therefore, the application of B2G technology in orderly charging scheduling is better than that without B2G technology.

The article firstly analyzes the filtering characteristics of double-LCC circuit in wireless power transfer (WPT) system. By defining voltage interference ratio (VIR), the harmonic interference introduced by inverter output voltage square waveform is represented. The ability of suppressing harmonic voltage source interference with different frequency of each branch of compensation network is obtained by analyzing VIR. In order to further reduce the harmonic content of each branch of circuit and decrease the harmonic introduction from the input-side, the article adopts an LC-double-LCC topology circuit. That is, an LC resonant part is connected in series at the input-side of circuit. The VIR of both double-LCC and new structure are compared by building mathematical model, and it is proved that the new structure has better ability to restrain interference. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of input-side current is calculated and the relation between the values of LC part, coupling coefficient, load and THD is quantitatively expressed. The sensitivity analysis in detuning condition of two structures is conducted. When the frequency offset becomes larger, the new topology shows better effect on inhibiting the increase of capacitive and inductive degree of the input impedance angle. The efficiency of WPT system with LC-double-LCC structure is analyzed, and reactive power of input-side is expressed by the value of LC part. With the parameters selected in this article, the input reactive power decreases 55.6% and power factor increases 0.68% after adding LC part. The results of simulation and calculation show that the LC-double-LCC structure has higher efficiency and larger power factor. An experimental platform is built and the theoretical results are verified.

In order to improve wireless charging power and reduce heating problems, the optimal design of the high-current wireless charging coil has always been the research focus of wireless charging system research. This paper proposes a multi-branch and multi-capacitance current sharing method for series–series (SS) receiving coils. Firstly, the current sharing model with n branches that are connected parallel to multiple compensation capacitors is established. The current sharing situation of parallel coils with three branches and three capacitors with independently resonant compensation is analyzed. Then, the wireless charging system with the parallel coils of 48 V/100 A receiving coils is simulated. The results show that when one capacitor is used for compensation, the three-coil currents highly differ; when three capacitors are compensated independently, the three-coil currents are basically equal. The simulation results show that the current sharing method can effectively improve the charging power of the system and reduce the maximum temperature of the receiving coil, which proves the effectiveness of this method. Finally, through the experimental comparison, it is verified that the current sharing measure can make the current of each wire basically equal.

In the electric vehicle wireless power transmission system, the high-frequency alternating magnetic field between the transmitter and receiver can have a certain impact on the health of living organisms and may even lead to lesions. In addition, metal foreign objects in an alternating magnetic field can cause their own heating or even cause fires due to the eddy current effect, so foreign object detection is an essential function in the wireless power transmission system of electric vehicles. In order to prevent metals and living organisms from entering the charging area and causing harm to the charging system and living organisms, this paper proposes a method for detecting living organisms and metal foreign objects. Firstly, the equivalent circuits for the detection systems of the living organism foreign objects and metal foreign objects are established, respectively, and the working theory of the detection system is analyzed by deriving equations. Secondly, the comb capacitor simulation model was constructed, and the comb capacitor electrode spacing, wire thickness, and capacitor spacing were designed based on the scale factor γ to explore the effects of the height and bottom area of the living organism’s foreign object on the comb capacitor. We constructed a simulation model of the detection coil and designed the inner diameter D, the number of turns N, and the wire spacing S of the detection coil according to the scale factor β. An arrayed detection coil and comb capacitor combination mode is proposed to realize the function of the simultaneous detection of metal and living organism foreign objects, and a compensation capacitor is introduced to keep the detection system in a resonant state. Lastly, a platform for foreign object detection experiments was set up to detect metal screws and beef chunks compared to the detection area without foreign objects. Metal screws entering the detection area cause a 20% voltage drop in the detection circuit resistor, and beef chunks entering the detection area cause a 30% voltage drop in the detection circuit resistor, so the detection method is effective in detecting both metals and living organisms. The feasibility of the combined mode of arrayed detection coils and comb capacitors was verified.

Summary: Background: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. However, accurate diagnosis of breast cancer using medical images heavily relies on the experience of radiologists. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence model that diagnosed single-mass breast lesions on contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) for assisting the diagnostic workflow. Methods: A total of 1912 women with single-mass breast lesions on CEM images before biopsy or surgery were included from June 2017 to October 2022 at three centres in China. Samples were divided into training and validation sets, internal testing set, pooled external testing set, and prospective testing set. A fully automated pipeline system (FAPS) using RefineNet and the Xception + Pyramid pooling module (PPM) was developed to perform the segmentation and classification of breast lesions. The performances of six radiologists and adjustments in Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 4 under the FAPS-assisted strategy were explored in pooled external and prospective testing sets. The segmentation performance was assessed using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), and the classification was assessed using heatmaps, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. The radiologists’ reading time was recorded for comparison with the FAPS. This trial is registered with China Clinical Trial Registration Centre (ChiCTR2200063444). Findings: The FAPS-based segmentation task achieved DSCs of 0.888 ± 0.101, 0.820 ± 0.148 and 0.837 ± 0.132 in the internal, pooled external and prospective testing sets, respectively. For the classification task, the FAPS achieved AUCs of 0.947 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.916–0.978), 0.940 (95% [CI]: 0.894–0.987) and 0.891 (95% [CI]: 0.816–0.945). It outperformed radiologists in terms of classification efficiency based on single lesions (6 s vs 3 min). Moreover, the FAPS-assisted strategy improved the performance of radiologists. BI-RADS category 4 in 12.4% and 13.3% of patients was adjusted in two testing sets with the assistance of FAPS, which may play an important guiding role in the selection of clinical management strategies. Interpretation: The FAPS based on CEM demonstrated the potential for the segmentation and classification of breast lesions, and had good generalisation ability and clinical applicability. Reasonable end effect equivalence is of vital importance in the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) for a line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) equipped with a hybrid solid rotor for improved starting and synchronous capabilities. In this work, a series of correction factors are applied to the rotor conductivity to include the end effect in the 2-D FEA model. Derivation of these correction factors completes after the separation of different torque components. A dynamic motor model of the LSPMSM is established with some parameters extracted from the 2-D FEA using the conductivity correction. Outcomes of this model exhibit good agreements with the 3-D FEA results, by which the introduced correction factors are validated to possess the acceptable precision and effectiveness.

Abstract Background Although Chinese government has dedicated the past decades to treating chronic diseases by primary healthcare system, many more residents are apt to choose higher-tier facilities to treat minor chronic diseases. Understanding residents’ preferences for chronic disease management in primary care facilities can bridge the gap between residents’ choices and policy implementation. This study aims to elicit residents’ preferences for chronic disease management in primary care facilities in the hypothetical minor chronic disease scenario. Methods Six hundred eighty residents were administered a discrete choice experiment that elicited preferences for chronic disease management in primary care facilities. Services attributes were service mode, treatment measure, out-of-pocket expenditure (OOP), traveling time to healthcare facility and title of physician. Mixed logit models were used to estimate stated preferences and willingness to pay for attributes. WTP confidence intervals were estimated by the delta method. Results A total of 94.44% of the completed questionnaires were valid (680 of 720 respondents). The participants preferred chronic disease management service with modern medicine, traveling time ≤ 30mins, and less OOP expenditure. Compared with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), residents prefer modern medicine, willing to pay 155.53 CNY ($21.97) to change from TCM to modern medicine. Compensation about 86.02 CNY ($12.15) was needed to enable residents to change the choice of the nearer primary care facility to a further one. Integrated medicine in community clinics by experts was residents’ most preferred scenario while TCM in the tertiary hospital was their least preferred one. Conclusion In order to increase the utilization of primary healthcare services in chronic diseases management, policy makers need to concern more about the services of medical treatment type, price and convenience. Therefore, we advise policy makers to provide nearer primary healthcare services for residents especially for residents in surrounding areas. Furthermore, balancing the resource allocation between Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern medicine is worthy of consideration.

The deficiency of available phosphate significantly limits plant growth and development. This study sought to investigate how alfalfa (Medicago sativa), a high-yielding and high-quality forage widely cultivated worldwide, responds to phosphate deficiency stress by integrating transcriptional and post-transcriptional data. In this study, 6,041 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in alfalfa roots under phosphate deficiency conditions. Furthermore, psRNATarget, RNAhybrid, and TargetFinder were used to predict the target genes of 137 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) in the root. In total, 3,912 DEGs were predicted as target genes. Pearson correlation analysis revealed 423 pairs of miRNA-mRNA regulatory relationships. MiRNA negatively regulates mRNA involved in regulatory pathways of phosphate deficiency responses in alfalfa. miR156e targeted squamosa promoter-binding-like protein 13A (SPL13), miR160c targeted auxin response factor 18 (ARF18), and miR2587a controlled glycolysis and citrate cycle via Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (ATP) (PCKA). Novel-miR27 regulated SPX domain-containing protein that controls phosphate transport in alfalfa root, novel-miR3-targeted sulfoquinovosyl transferase SQD2 controlled sulfolipid synthesis and glutathione S-transferase (GST; mediated by miR169j/k and novel-miR159) regulated glutathione metabolism. miR399l regulated auxin-responsive protein SAUR72 involved in IAA signal transduction, while abscisic acid receptor PYL4 (regulated by novel-miR205 and novel-miR83) participated in ABA signal transduction. Combined miRNA-mRNA enrichment analysis showed that most miRNAs regulate the phosphate starvation response of alfalfa by modulating target genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, sulfolipid metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and hormone signal transduction. Therefore, this study provides new insights into the post-transcriptional regulation mechanism of phosphate deficiency responses and new perspectives on phosphate assimilation pathways in alfalfa and other legumes.

Based on the magnetic gear effect, the field-modulated permanent-magnet machine (FMPMM) can realize the unequal pole design of the rotor PM field and the stator armature magnetic field. With the advantages of high torque density and high efficiency, the FMPMM has been widely studied in low-speed direct-drive applications. As a kind of machine excited by PMs, the performance of the FMPMM was affected by the demagnetization state. However, the method for establishing the FMPMM demagnetization model based on a finite element analysis (FEA) presented some problems, including tedious repeated modeling work and long calculation time-consuming under fine subdivision. Therefore, in this paper, a six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM was taken as an example, and an equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model was proposed for evaluating the machine performance under demagnetization. In order to realize the rapid establishing EMN models under diverse demagnetization types, the variable coercivity of PM was introduced. Furthermore, for the purpose of improving the calculation accuracy and shortening the calculation time, the least square method was used in fitting and analyzing the discrete results. Then, in order to verify the validity of the proposed EMN model, a prototype was fabricated and a testing platform was built. The air-gap flux density and the no-load back EMF obtained by the FEA, the proposed EMN model, and the experimental testing were compared. The results showed that the proposed EMN model can realize the rapid modeling and accurate analysis of the six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM under diverse demagnetization types.

Abstract Background Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a primary cause of degenerative disc diseases; however, the mechanisms underlying the degeneration remain unclear. The immunoinflammatory response plays an important role in IVDD progression. The inflammatory cytokine lymphotoxin-α (LTα), formerly known as TNFβ, is associated with various pathological conditions, while its role in the pathogenesis of IVDD remains elusive. Methods Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), Western blotting (WB), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to assess the levels of LTα in human nucleus pulposus (NP) tissues between degeneration and control groups. The plasma concentrations of LTα and C-reactive protein (CRP) were compared between healthy and IVDD patients. Rat primary NP cells were cultured and identified via immunofluorescence. Methyl-thiazolyl-tetrazolium assays and flow cytometry were used to evaluate the effects of LTα on rat NP cell viability. After NP cells were treated with LTα, degeneration-related molecules (Caspase-3, Caspase-1, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -3, aggrecan and type II collagen) were measured via RT-qPCR and WB. Results The levels of both the mRNA and protein of LTα in human degenerated NP tissue significantly increased. Plasma LTα and CRP did not differ between healthy controls and IVDD patients. Rat primary NP cells were cultured, and the purity of primary NP cells was > 90%. Cell experiments showed inversely proportional relationships among the LTα dose, treatment time, and cell viability. The optimal conditions (dose and time) for LTα treatment to induce rat NP cell degeneration were 5 μg/ml and 48 ~ 72 h. The apoptosis rate and the levels of Caspase-3, Caspase-1, and MMP-3 significantly increased after LTα treatment, while the levels of type II collagen and aggrecan were decreased, and the protein expression levels were consistent with their mRNA expression levels. Conclusions This study demonstrated that elevated LTα is closely associated with IVDD and that LTα may induce NP cell apoptosis and reduce important extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, which cause adverse effects on IVDD progress. Moreover, the optimal conditions for LTα treatment to induce NP cell degeneration were determined.

With the development of nanotechnology, a theranostics nanoplatform can have broad applications in multimodal image-guided combination treatment in cancer precision medicine. To overcome the limitations of a single diagnostic imaging mode and a single chemotherapeutic approach, we intend to combat tumor growth and provide therapeutic interventions by integrating multimodal imaging capabilities and effective combination therapies on an advanced platform. So, we have constructed IO@MnO2@DOX (IMD) hybrid nanoparticles composed of superparamagnetic iron oxide (IO), manganese dioxide (MnO2), and doxorubicin (DOX). The nano-platform could achieve efficient T2-T1 magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, switchable photoacoustic (PA) imaging, and tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive DOX release and achieve enhanced synergism of magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy with PA/MR bimodal imaging. The results show that IMD has excellent heating properties when exposed to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Therefore, it can be used as an inducer for tumor synergism therapy with chemotherapy and hyperthermia. In the TME, the IMD nanoparticle was degraded, accompanied by DOX release. Moreover, in vivo experimental results show that the smart nanoparticles had excellent T2-T1 MR and PA imaging capabilities and an excellent synergistic effect of magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy. IMD nanoparticles could significantly inhibit tumor growth in tumor-bearing mice with negligible side effects. In conclusion, smart IMD nanoparticles have the potential for tumor diagnosis and growth inhibition as integrated diagnostic nanoprobes.

Leymus chinensis steppe is subject to degradation under the combined stresses of climate change and human disturbance. This study aimed to determine the independent and compound effects of precipitation and clipping frequency on the community structure and species temporal stability of L. chinensis steppe. Six treatments were applied in a 9-year field study, comprising three precipitation regimes (precipitation reduced by 50%, R1; unchanged from ambient precipitation, R2; and increased by 50%, R3) and two clipping frequencies (clipping once or twice per year, C1 and C2). We evaluated the soil hydrothermal status, dry matter, importance value and temporal stability of five important species (L. chinensis, Artemisia eriopoda, Cleistogenes squarrosa, Potentilla tanacetifolia, and Stipa krylovii) in the L. chinensis community. The results showed: Change in the soil volumetric water content (±2.4%) altered the competitive capability of L. chinensis relative to its associated species. Drought was beneficial to S. krylovii, wet status was favorable to C. squarrosa and P. tanacetifolia, whereas drought and a wet regime both reduced the importance value and temporal stability of L. chinensis. Erratic precipitation, rather than clipping frequency, decreased the temporal stability of L. chinensis. Net primary productivity and dry matter of L. chinensis were strongly correlated under drought or wet regimes. Restoration of the key species L. chinensis and controlling grazing intensity in severe drought or wet conditions are recommended strategies for sustainable management of L. chinensis steppe.

Model predictive control (MPC) technology for multi-phase electric drives has received increasing attention in modern industries, especially in electric vehicles, marine electrical propulsion, and wind power generation. However, MPC has several challenges in controlling multi-phase electric drives, including the design of weighting factors, high computational complexity, large harmonic currents, heavy reliance on the system model, fault-tolerant control operation, common-mode voltage, and zero-sequence current hazards. Therefore, this paper gives a comprehensive review of the latest and most effective solutions to the existing major technical challenges and prospects for the future trends of MPC for multi-phase electric drives.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) are common forage plants for feeding livestock, and their effects on soil bacterial organisms have been extensively studied. However, there is little comprehensive research on soil bacterial organisms and their function in a long-term alfalfa monocropping system after corn insertion and fertilization. The effects of alfalfa–corn rotation (AF: alfalfa monocropping, RA: alfalfa and corn rotation) and nitrogen fertilization (RA0 and RA15) were investigated in a field experiment. The results showed that fertilization significantly increased the aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil nitrate nitrogen, and corn insertion significantly decreased the nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) (p < 0.05). In addition, the bacterial community structure among the treatments was significantly changed by the rotation and fertilization. The rotational system of RA significantly increased the soil bacterial diversity compared with AF (p < 0.01), and most of the soil bacterial communities were of the phyla Actinobacterota and Proteobacteria. The RA system had a lower relative abundance of Actinobacterota than the AF system. The bacterial function prediction found that the soil carbon and nitrogen cycle processes in RA were more active than those in AF. The RDA analysis revealed that NO3−-N and pH were the main environmental factors affecting the bacterial community structure in the RA system.

The unique and open large frame structures of prussian blue analogues (PBA) enables it for accommodating a large number of cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, etc.), thus, PBA are considered as promising electrode materials for the rechargeable battery. However, due to the chemical composition, there are still many alkaline metal ions in the gap within the framework, which puts multivalent metals in PBA in a low valence state and affects the sodium storage performance. To improve the valence of metal ions in PBA materials, precursors prepared by co−precipitation method and hydrothermal method are used to synthesis KxCo1.5−0.5xFe(CN)6 through further chemical oxidation. Through the introducing of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with excellent conductivity by a simple physical mixing method, the cycle stability and rate performance of the PBA material can be further improved. The K0.5Co1.2Fe(CN)6·2H2O/rGO anode prepared with 2 h hydrothermal time and further chemical oxidation, named as KCoHCP−H2−EK/rGO, exhibits a super electrochemical performance, delivering initial charge/discharge capacities of 846.7/1445.0 mAh·g−1, and a capacity retention of 58.2% after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA·g−1. The KCoHCP−H2−EK/rGO outstanding electrochemical behaviors are attributed to the unique dual−active site structure properties and the improved surface conductance of materials by rGO components.

The detailed morphometry alterations of the human hippocampal formation (HF) for blind individuals are still understudied. 50 subjects were recruited from Yantai Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical University, including 16 congenital blindness, 14 late blindness, and 20 sighted controls. Volume and shape analysis were conducted between the blind (congenital or late) and sighted groups to observe the (sub)regional alterations of the HF. No significant difference of the hippocampal volume was observed between the blind and sighted subjects. Rightward asymmetry of the hippocampal volume was found for both congenital and late blind individuals, while no significant hemispheric difference was observed for the sighted controls. Shape analysis showed that the superior and inferior parts of both the hippocampal head and tail expanded, while the medial and lateral parts constrained for the blind individuals as compared to the sighted controls. The morphometry alterations for the congenital blind and late blind individuals are nearly the same. Significant expansion of the superior part of the hippocampal tail for both congenital and late blind groups were observed for the left hippocampi after FDR correction. Current results suggest that the cross-model plastic may occur in both hemispheres of the HF to improve the navigation ability without the stimuli of visual cues, and the alteration is more prominent for the left hemisphere.

Climate change (rainfall events and global warming) affects the survival of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in winter. Appropriate water management can quickly reduce the mortality of alfalfa during winter. To determine how changes in water affect the cold resistance of alfalfa, we explored the root system traits under different rainfall events and the effects on cold resistance in three alfalfa cultivars. These were exposed to three simulated rainfall events (SRE) × two phases in a randomized complete block design with six replications. The three cultivars were WL168, WL353 and WL440, and the three SRE were irrigation once every second day (D2), every four days (D4) and every eight days (D8). There were two phases: before cold acclimation and after cold acclimation. Our results demonstrated that a period of exposure to low temperature was required for alfalfa to achieve maximum cold resistance. The root system tended toward herringbone branching under D8, compared with D2 and D4, and demonstrated greater root biomass, crown diameter, root volume, average link length and topological index. Nevertheless, D8 had less lateral root length, root surface area, specific root length, root forks and fractal dimensions. Greater root biomass and topological index were beneficial to cold resistance in alfalfa, while more lateral roots and root forks inhibited its ability to survive winter. Alfalfa roots had higher proline, soluble sugar and starch content in D8 than in D2 and D4. In contrast, there was lower malondialdehyde in D8, indicating that alfalfa had better cold resistance following a longer irrigation interval before winter. After examining root biomass, root system traits and physiological indexes we concluded that WL168 exhibited stronger cold resistance. Our results contribute to greater understanding of root and cold stress, consequently providing references for selection of cultivars and field water management to improve cold resistance of alfalfa in the context of changes in rainfall patterns.

Abstract Background Alfalfa is a high-quality forage cultivated widely in northern China. Recently, the failure of alfalfa plants to survive the winter has caused substantial economic losses. Water management has attracted considerable attention as a method for the potential improvement of winter survival. The aim of this study was to determine whether and how changes in the water regime affect the freezing tolerance of alfalfa. Results The alfalfa variety WL353LH was cultivated under water regimes of 80 and 25% of water-holding capacity, and all the plants were subjected to low temperatures at 4/0 °C (light/dark) and then − 2/− 6 °C (light/dark). The semi-lethal temperatures were lower for water-stressed than well-watered alfalfa. The pool sizes of total soluble sugars, total amino acids, and proline changed substantially under water-deficit and low-temperature conditions. Metabolomics analyses revealed 72 subclasses of differential metabolites, among which lipid and lipid-like molecules (e.g., fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and glycerophospholipids) and amino acids, peptides, and analogues (e.g., proline betaine) were upregulated under water-deficit conditions. Some carbohydrates (e.g., D-maltose and raffinose) and flavonoids were also upregulated at low temperatures. Finally, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses revealed 18 significantly enriched pathways involved in the biosynthesis and metabolism of carbohydrates, unsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, and glycerophospholipids. Conclusions Water deficit significantly enhanced the alfalfa’ freezing tolerance, and this was correlated with increased soluble sugar, amino acid, and lipid and lipid-like molecule contents. These substances are involved in osmotic regulation, cryoprotection, and the synthesis, fluidity, and stability of the cellular membrane. Our study provides a reference for improving alfalfa’ winter survival through water management.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is an important perennial legume forage that is cultivated in saline soil worldwide. This study aimed to clarify the effects of organic base fertilizer and inorganic topdressing on the productivity of alfalfa growing in saline soil. A three-year field study was conducted in which alfalfa was grown in the saline soil of the Huanghe River Delta with a control (no fertilizer) and three treatments: organic base fertilizer (Base), topdressing with urea fertilizer (Top), and combined base and topdressing fertilizers (BT). The productivity in the BT and Base treatments was 13.21 and 13.82 t·hm−2 in 3 years, significantly higher than that in the Top treatment and the control. The increased productivity in the BT and Base treatments were because organic matter promoted root growth of alfalfa seedlings in saline soil. The diversity of the soil bacterial community was not affected by the BT treatment, but the Base treatment increased the abundance of Acidobacteria, and the Top treatment increased the abundance of Gemmatimonadetes. Soil bacteria play an important role in improving the productivity of alfalfa growing in saline soil, and the mechanism by which soil microbes increase yield needs to be further studied.
