Abstract

Alzheimer's disease(AD), the most common neurodegenerative disease, has shown an increasing incidence among younger people. With the onset of disease, most patients' cognitive function will show a progressive decline, bringing a heavy burden to the society and the family. Studies have shown that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) may be involved in the pathogenesis of AD through multiple mechanisms. This article reviews the mechanism of FGF in AD, with the hope of providing new ideas for elucidating the pathogenesis and early diagnosis of AD.

Abstract

A quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) disruption is a very rare phenomenon in which QBO westward wind is temporarily interrupted by the occurrence of a band of westward wind in the tropical stratosphere. This phenomenon is important as it could greatly affect the global atmospheric circulation, especially in the mesosphere. Past observational and modelling studies have shown the QBO varying mesospheric diurnal tide, but the mechanism is still not fully understood. In this study, we report on the strong response of mesospheric diurnal tides to the two QBO disruptions that occurred in 2015–2016 and 2019–2020 and their possible mechanisms. The diurnal tidal winds are observed by a meteor radar chain, consisting of meteor radars located at Kunming (25.6° N, 103.8° E), Wuhan (30.5° N, 114.2° E), Mengcheng (33.4° N, 116.5° E), Beijing (40.3° N, 116.2° E), and Mohe (53.5° N, 122.3° E) in China. These observations provide clear evidence that mesospheric diurnal tides are unusually weakened (by ∼ -6 m s−1) during these QBO disruptions, over Kunming, Wuhan, Mengcheng, and Beijing. Using the Specific Dynamics version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (SD-WACCM-X) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) dataset, the analysis indicates that the QBO wind affects mid-latitude mesospheric diurnal tides by modulating both the solar radiative absorption by subtropical stratospheric ozone (∼ 5 to 0.5 hPa) and the tidal–gravity wave interaction in the mesosphere (∼ 60 to 100 km). Thus, these unexpected QBO disruptions provide an opportunity to better understand the coupling between climate change and middle-atmospheric dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Apolipoproteins and cortical morphology are closely associated with memory complaints, and both may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease. Objective: To examine whether apolipoprotein B (ApoB), apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA1), and their ratio (ApoB/ApoA1) are associated with cortical morphology in patients with memory complaints. Methods: Ninety-seven patients underwent neuropsychological testing, measurements of ApoB, ApoA1, ApoB/ApoA1, plasma Alzheimer's biomarker, apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotyping, and 3T structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) scans. Based on sMRI scanning locations, patients were categorized into the University of Electronic Science and Technology (UESTC) and the Fourth People's Hospital of Chengdu (FPHC). The Computational Anatomy Toolbox within Statistical Parametric Mapping was used to calculate each patient's cortical morphology index based on sMRI data. The cortical morphology index and apolipoproteins were also analyzed. Results: Significant positive correlations were found between ApoB and sulcal depth in the lateral occipital cortex among the UESTC, the FPHC, and the total sample groups, and negative correlations were observed between sulcal depth in the lateral occipital cortex and the scores of the Shape Trails Test Part A and B. In the FPHC group, the scores of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Basic, delayed recall of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Animal Fluency Test and Boston Naming Test were positively correlated with the sulcal depth. Conclusions: ApoB is associated with the sulcal depth in the lateral occipital cortex, potentially relating to speed/executive function in individuals with memory complaints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Designing and synthesizing multifunctional hybrid copper halides with near ultraviolet (NUV) light‐excited high‐energy emission (<500 nm) remains challenging. Here, a pair of broadband‐excited high‐energy emitting isomers, namely, α‐/β‐(MePh3P)2CuI3 (MePh3P=methyltriphenylphosphonium), were synthesized. α‐(MePh3P)2CuI3 with blue emission peaking at 475 nm is firstly discovered wherein its structure contains regular [CuI3]2− triangles and crystallizes in centrosymmetric space group P21/c. While β‐(MePh3P)2CuI3 featuring distorted [CuI3]2− planar triangles shows inversion symmetry breaking and crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P21, which exhibits cyan emission peaking at 495 nm with prominent near‐unity photoluminescence quantum yield and the excitation band ranging from 200 to 450 nm. Intriguingly, β‐(MePh3P)2CuI3 exhibits phase‐matchable second‐harmonic generation response of 0.54×KDP and a suitable birefringence of 0.06@1064 nm. Furthermore, β‐(MePh3P)2CuI3 also can be excited by X‐ray radioluminescence with a high scintillation light yield of 16193 photon/MeV and an ultra‐low detection limit of 47.97 nGy/s, which is only 0.87 % of the standard medical diagnosis (5.5 μGy/s). This work not only promotes the development of solid‐state lighting, laser frequency conversion and X‐ray imaging, but also provides a reference for constructing multifunctional hybrid metal halides.
