Background: Atopic dermatitis and autoimmune diseases are highly heritable conditions that may co-occur from an early age. Methods: The primary study is a national administrative cohort study involving 499,428 children born in 2002, tracked until 2017. Atopic dermatitis was defined as five or more principal diagnoses of atopic dermatitis and two or more topical steroid prescriptions. We estimated the risks for the occurrence of 41 autoimmune diseases, controlling for risk factors. In addition, we sourced a gene library from the National Library of Medicine to conduct a comprehensive gene ontology. We used Gene Weaver to identify gene set similarity and clustering, and used GeneMania to generate a network for shared genes. Results: Exposed and unexposed groups included 39,832 and 159,328 children, respectively. During a mean follow-up of 12 years, the exposed group had an increased risk of autoimmune disease (hazard ratio, 1.27 [95 % confidence interval, 1.23–1.32]) compared to the unexposed group. The hazard ratios of autoimmune illnesses consistently increased with two- and five years lag times and alternative atopic dermatitis definitions. Shared genes between atopic dermatitis and autoimmune diseases were associated with comorbidities such as asthma, bronchiolitis, and specific infections. Genetic interactions of these shared genes revealed clustering in Th1, Th2, Th17, and non-classifiable pathways. Conclusions: Atopic dermatitis was significantly associated with an increased risk of subsequent autoimmune disease. we identified the genetically associated disease in atopic dermatitis patients comorbid with autoimmune disease and demonstrated a genetic network between atopic dermatitis and autoimmune diseases.

This work aimed to explore the food quality attributes of in-flight meals and to examine the antecedents of positive emotion and continuous usage of these meals. As a subdimension, this study uses multiple attributes: menu diversity, familiarity, temperature, nutrition, and presentation. Another purpose of this work is to examine the moderating effect of menu diversity on the relationship between nutrition and continuance usage. A survey via clickworker was used to collect the data for this work. There were 317 valid observations for statistical inference. This study used a structural equation model to test the hypotheses, and the Hayes process model macro 1 was adopted to test the moderating effect. The results showed that all independent variables other than familiarity significantly accounted for positive emotion. Moreover, all of these attributes had a positive impact on continuous usage. This work unveiled a significant moderating effect of menu diversity on the relationship between nutrition and continuance usage. This research elucidates the literature by clarifying the influential attributes of emotion and continuous usage intention in the domain of in-flight meal products and discussing practical implications.

This work focused on the perception of the food healthiness of in-flight meals. This work adopts presentation as the determinant. This work also employs attitude as the consequence of food healthiness. This research also examines the moderating effect of familiarity on the relationship between food presentation and food healthiness. This research used a survey, and survey participants were recruited via a Clickworker platform service. Survey participants were experienced with in-flight meals. The number of observations was 317. Moreover, this research tested the research hypotheses using the Hayes process macro Model 7. The results revealed that food healthiness is positively influenced by presentation and that food healthiness positively affects attitude. Moreover, the results revealed that the type of presentation has a positive influence on attitude. Familiarity was a significant moderating variable for the relationship between food presentation and food healthiness. This work sheds light on the literature by identifying the associations among four attributes of in-flight meals. Additionally, the results of this study could be used as a reference to develop better in-flight meals.

IntroductionAlzheimer’s disease (AD) poses an increasing global health challenge and is marked by gradual cognitive deterioration, memory impairment, and neuroinflammation. Innovative therapeutic approaches as non-pharmacological protocol are urgently needed with side effect risk of drugs. Microcurrent therapy, a non-invasive modality involving low-level electrical currents, has emerged as a potential solution to address AD’s complex pathogenesis. This study investigates the optimal application of microcurrent therapy as a clinical protocol for AD, utilizing a comprehensive approach that integrates behavioral assessments and neuroinflammation evaluation in a mouse model of dementia.Methods and resultsThe results reveal that microcurrent therapy holds promise in ameliorating memory impairment and reducing neuroinflammation in AD. Behavioral assessments, including the Novel Object Recognition Test (NOR) and Radial Arm Maze Test (RAM), demonstrated improved cognitive function following microcurrent therapy. Furthermore, microcurrent therapy inhibited expression of neuroinflammatory proteins, including ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in current-treated group. Mechanistic insights suggest that microcurrent therapy may modulate neuroinflammation through the regulation of MAPK signaling pathways.ConclusionThis study emphasizes the prospect of microcurrent therapy as a safe and efficacious non-pharmacological strategy for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), providing optimism to the countless individuals impacted by this debilitating ailment. These results contribute to the developments of an innovative clinical protocol for AD and recovery from neurological injury, underscoring the significance of investigating unconventional therapeutic approaches for addressing this complex condition.

PurposeThis study aimed to investigate associations of socioeconomic status (SES) with asthma exacerbation and asthma-related hospital utilization factors among children with asthma in the Republic of Korea.MethodsThis study retrospectively analyzed population-level data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, collected from 2013 through 2019. SES was classified into five categories according to the national health insurance premiums quantiles (0 [lowest] to 4 [highest]). The hazard ratios (HRs) for asthma exacerbation, emergency department (ED) visits, hospital admission, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission were analyzed with respect to SES.ResultsAmong the five SES groups, SES group 0 (medical aid), had the highest tallies and proportions of children who experienced asthma exacerbations (n = 1,682, 4.8%), ED visits (n = 932, 2.6%), hospital admission (n = 2,734, 7.7%) and ICU admission (n = 14, 0.04%). Abstract This study analyzed the effect of parental supervision of infants at age 4 to 6 months on injuries at age 4 to 12 months. Among all Korean children born during 2008–2009, 464,326 (50.6%) infant had parents who responded to a questionnaire that surveyed their safety and supervision when infant were 4 to 6 months-old. Based on questionnaire score, infant were divided into “safe” or “unsafe” group. 1:1 propensity score matching was used to balance the groups, and injury diagnosis and treatments were analyzed. After matching, we examined the records of 405,862 infant. The unsafe group had significantly increased risk ratios (RRs) for injury of head/neck (RR: 1.06), trunk/abdominopelvic region (RR: 1.12), upper extremities (RR: 1.04), and from burn and frostbite (RR: 1.10). The risks of a wound and fracture and foreign body injury were significantly greater in infant whose parents sometimes left them alone (RR: 1.15 and 1.06, respectively), and whose parents did not always keep their eyes on them (RR: 1.04 and 1.13, respectively). Infant whose parents had a hot drink when carrying them had an increased risk of burn injuries (RR: 1.21). Injuries were less common in infant whose parents provided more supervision.

This study aims to examine the antecedents of consequences of healthiness in the café business context. Additionally, this study attests to the moderating effect of one's concern for health (health concern) between healthiness and attitude. To attain a more vivid response, this research selected Starbucks coffeehouse as a case study. Hygiene, healthiness, and nutritional disclosure are the determinants of healthiness in the café business area. The consequences of healthiness are attitude and purchase intention for café products. Health concern is the moderating variable between healthiness and attitude in the context of café businesses. In order to test the association between attributes, a survey was used. Amazon Mechanical Turk was chosen to recruit survey participants. The valid observation for data analysis was 455 participants. For hypothesis testing, a structural equation model was implemented. Regarding the results, health concern is positively influenced by hygiene and organicness, but healthiness is negatively affected by nutritional disclosure. Moreover, it was found that health concern significantly moderates the relationship between healthiness and attitude, and attitude exerts a positive effect on purchase intention.

Abstract. Spine surgeons often encounter cases of delayed postoperative spinal infection (PSI). Delayed-onset PSI is a common clinical problem. However, since many studies have investigated acute PSIs, reports of delayed PSI are rare. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical features, treatment course, and prognosis of delayed PSI with acute PSI. Ninety-six patients diagnosed with postoperative spinal infection were enrolled in this study. Patients were classified into 2 groups: acute onset (AO) within 90 days (n = 73) and delayed onset (DO) after 90 days (n = 23). The baseline data, clinical manifestations, specific treatments, and treatment outcomes were compared between the 2 groups. The history of diabetes mellitus (DM) and metallic instrumentation at index surgery were more DO than the AO group. The causative organisms did not differ between the 2 groups. Redness or heat sensation around the surgical wound was more frequent in the AO group (47.9%) than in the DO group (21.7%) (P = .02). The mean C-reactive protein levels during infection diagnosis was 8.9 mg/dL in the AO and 4.0 mg/dL in the DO group (P = .02). All patients in the DO group had deep-layer infection. In the DO group, revision surgery and additional instrumentation were required, and the duration of parenteral antibiotic use and total antibiotic use was significantly longer than that in the AO group. Screw loosening, disc space collapse, and instability were higher in the DO group (65.2%) than in the AO group (41.1%) (P = .04). However, the length of hospital stay did not differ between the groups. Delayed-onset PSI requires more extensive and longer treatment than acute-onset surgical site infection. Clinicians should try to detect the surgical site infection as early as possible.

The purpose of this study was to explore the determinants of life satisfaction for Korean senior citizens. Subjective health and the Engel coefficient were used as the explanatory variables. This research also aimed to examine the moderating effect of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the relationship between the Engel coefficient and life satisfaction for Korean senior citizens. Archival data (Korean longitudinal study of aging) were used for this work. The study period is 2018 and 2020; the number of observations was 3879. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to test the research hypotheses. To examine further, this research performed additional analyses: sub-sample analysis, median split, and independence tests. The results indicated that the Engel coefficient is negatively associated with life satisfaction, while subjective health is positively related to life satisfaction. Moreover, Korean senior citizens’ life satisfaction was higher during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research provides information for building policy for senior Korean citizens.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether kiosk users’ characteristics can be explained by the technology acceptance model (TAM). Additionally, the goal of this research is to closely examine antecedents relevant to usefulness and ease of use. For the purposes of this study, the determinants of usefulness, degree of non-contact, time-saving efficiency, order accuracy, and ease of use were examined as important factors of kiosk design. The ease of use antecedents mainly consisted of payment and navigability. This study also attested to the relationships among a variety of TAM attributes: ease of use, usefulness, attitude, and intention to use. A survey was used to collect the majority of the data. Amazon Mechanical Turk was used for the recruitment of survey participants, and the number of valid observations was 346. A structural equation model was employed to test the study’s research hypotheses. It was found that time saving, order accuracy, and ease of use are positively associated with the level of usefulness. Ease of use is positively influenced by navigability, and attitude is positively determined by both ease of use and usefulness. Additionally, intention to use is positively impacted by both attitude and usefulness.

This study aimed to investigate the determinants of subjective health among South Korean senior citizens. Secondary data for the year 2018 was used from the Senior Citizen Research Panel data collected by the Korea Employment Information Service. A total of 3822 valid observations were analyzed. The dependent variable was subjective health, and the independent variables were religion participation, social gathering participation, economic activity, food expenditure, leisure expenditure, travel frequency, and art watching frequency. Descriptive analysis, correlation matrix, and independent t-test were carried out for data analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed using assets, age, and gender as control variables to test the research hypotheses. The results indicate that all the proposed attributes have a significant positive impact on the subjective health of Korean senior citizens, with implications for policy making.

The goal of this study was to investigate the accountability of the technology acceptance model (TAM) for Uber taxi applications. As antecedents of usefulness, this study selected three elements: time information, price information, and driver information. Data was collected using a survey on Amazon Mechanical Turk. The survey participants were users of the Uber taxi application. The number of valid observations for the data analysis was 412. For data analysis, frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation matrix, and structural equation modeling were utilized. The results show that the usefulness is significantly influenced by time and driver information. They further indicate that ease of use positively affects both usefulness and attitude. In addition, usefulness significantly determines attitude, and attitude toward the Uber taxi application exerts a substantial effect on intention to use. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the explanatory power of TAM using the Uber taxi application as a research subject.

Background and Objectives: Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic disease, can be triggered by various causes. This study investigated the association between allergic sensitization and anaphylactic symptoms and the severity of anaphylaxis in children.Patients and Methods: A retrospective review of 107 pediatric patients with anaphylaxis was performed between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2017; 74 patients underwent allergen testing for specific immunoglobulin E. Allergic sensitizations and associations with anaphylactic symptoms and severity were investigated.Results: Overall, 64 (86.5%) patients were sensitized to food or inhalant allergens. In children under 2 years of age, 90.5% were sensitized to food (P = 0.001); in those over 6 years of age, 84.6% were sensitized to inhalant allergens (P = 0.001). Milk sensitization was significantly associated with severe anaphylaxis (P = 0.036). The following symptoms showed significant associations with certain allergen sensitizations: facial edema with food; wheezing with milk; dyspnea with mite, etc. Certain allergen sensitizations presenting as risk factors for anaphylactic symptoms: wheat (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 4.644, P = 0.044) and nuts (aOR=3.614, P = 0.041) for wheezing, nuts (aOR=5.201, P = 0.026) for dyspnea, and milk (aOR=4.712, P = 0.048) for vomiting.Conclusion: The allergen sensitization status differed according to the age of the children experiencing anaphylaxis. The severity, symptoms, and signs of anaphylaxis differed depending on the allergen sensitization status.

The goal of this research is to investigate the determinants of subjective health and quality of life with a particular focus on middle- and old-aged citizens. Subjective health is an antecedent of quality of life. For both attributes, travel frequency, economic activity, and cultural activity frequency are the main explanatory variables. Korean middle- and old-aged citizen research panel data was used to derive the data; the study periods are 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016. The present work used an econometric method to analyze this panel data. The results show that subjective health positively affects quality of life; meanwhile, economic activity positively affects both subjective health and quality of life. It is also found that cultural activity and travel exert inverted U-shape impacts on subjective health and quality of life. The control variables in this research were gender, body mass index, birth year, and personal assets. These results could help guide policy makers in designing more efficient welfare policies for middle- and old-aged citizens.

Congenital factor VII deficiency is a rare autosomal-recessive bleeding disorder. Bleeding manifestations and clinical findings vary widely, ranging from asymptomatic subjects to patients with hemorrhages that may cause significant handicaps. Treatment has traditionally involved factor VII(FVII) replacement therapy using fresh frozen plasma, prothrombin complex concentrates or plasma-derived FVII concentrates. Recombinant activated FVII (NovoSeven®) is currently considered the first-line treatment for replacement therapy of FVII deficiency. Here we present a case of severe intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage in a neonate with congenital FVII deficiency.

Context: The link between congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and neurodevelopment is suggested, yet studies applying quantifiable measures are lacking. Moreover, socioeconomic disparities and subtle variation in timing of approach make the relationship difficult to detect. Objective: To evaluate associations between CH and abnormalities in neurodevelopment and growth and determine the critical period for intervention. Methods: We utilized a nationwide database to conduct a longitudinal analysis of 919 707 children. Exposure to CH was identified using claims-based data. The primary outcome of interest was suspected neurodevelopmental disorder, as measured using the Korean Ages & Stages Questionnaires (K-ASQ) administered annually from 9 to 72 months of age. Secondary outcomes were height and BMI z-scores. After randomly matching cases and controls at a 1:10 ratio, we employed inverse probability of treatment weighting and generalized estimating equation models for our analyses. We conducted subgroup analysis based on the age of treatment initiation. Results: The prevalence of CH in our population was 0.05% (n = 408). Relative to the control group, the CH group had higher risk of suspected neurodevelopmental disorders (propensity score-weighted odds ratio: 4.52; 95% CI: 2.91, 7.02), and significantly increased risk in each of the 5 K-ASQ domains. No time interactions were noted at any rounds for the outcomes according to when the neurodevelopmental assessment was conducted (all P for interaction >.05). The CH group also had higher risk for low height-for-age z-score, but not for elevated BMI-for-age z-score. In subgroup analysis, delayed medication for CH correlated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Conclusion: The CH group had worse neurodevelopmental outcomes and reduced height-for-age z-score. Liposarcoma (LPS) is a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma that constitutes 20% of all sarcoma cases in adults. Effective therapeutic protocols for human LPS are not well-defined. Tumor-treating fields (TTFields) are a novel and upcoming field for antitumor therapy. TTFields combined with chemoradiotherapy have proven to be more effective than TTFields combined with radiotherapy or chemotherapy alone. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of TTFields in inhibiting cell proliferation and viability for the anticancer treatment of LPS. The present study used TTFields (frequency, 150 kHz; intensity, 1.0 V/cm) to treat two LPS cell lines (94T778 and SW872) and analyzed the antitumor effects. According to trypan blue and MTT assay results, TTFields markedly reduced the viability and proliferation of LPS cell lines along with the formation of colonies in three-dimensional culture. Based on the Transwell chamber assay, TTFields treatment also markedly reduced the migration of LPS cells. Furthermore, as shown by the higher activation of caspase-3 in the Caspase-3 activity assay and the results of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, TTFields increased the formation of ROS in the cells and enhanced the proportion of apoptotic cells. The present study also investigated the inhibitory effect of TTFields in combination with doxorubicin (DOX) on the migratory capacity of tumor cells. The results demonstrated that TTFields treatment synergistically induced the ROS-induced apoptosis of LPS cancer cell lines and inhibited their migratory behavior. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the potential of TTFields in improving the sensitivity of LPS cancer cells, which may lay the foundation for future clinical trials of this combination treatment strategy. By building upon the dual coding theory of learning, this study aims to investigate the combined effects of perceived image and knowledge about world cultural heritage sites in Korea on willingness-to-pay an entrance fee. To do so, a 2 (image: absence vs. presence) x 2 (knowledge: absence vs. presence) experiment was conducted. Then, contingent valuation method (CVM) was used to estimate and compare tourists' willingness-to-pay among four experimental conditions. The findings revealed that levels of perceived image and knowledge vary depending on experimental treatments, which substantially contribute to an increase in their payment intention for an entrance fee. Objective: Cubital tunnel syndrome, the most common ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathy, is usually managed by simple decompression or anterior transposition. One of the concerns in transposition is damage to the nerve branches around the elbow. In this study, the location of ulnar nerve branches to the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) was assessed during operations for cubital tunnel syndrome to provide information to reduce operation-related complications. Methods: A personal series (HJY) of cases operated for cubital tunnel syndrome was reviewed. Cases managed by transposition and location of branches to the FCU were selected for analysis. The function of the branches was confirmed by intraoperative nerve stimulation and the location of the branches was assessed by the distance from the center of medial epicondyle. Results: There was a total of 61 cases of cubital tunnel syndrome, among which 31 were treated by transposition. Twenty-one cases with information on the location of branches were analyzed. The average number of ulnar nerve branches around the elbow was 1.8 (0 to 3), only one case showed no branches. Most of the cases had one branch to the medial head, and one other to the lateral head of the FCU. There were two cases having branches without FCU responses (one branch in one case, three branches in another). The location of the branches to the medial head was 16.3±8.6 mm distal to the medial epicondyle (16 branches; range, 0 to 35 mm), to the lateral head was 19.5±9.5 mm distal to the medial epicondyle (19 branches; range, -5 to 30 mm). Branches without FCU responses were found from 20 mm proximal to the medial condyle to 15 mm distal to the medial epicondyle (five branches). Most of the branches to the medial head were 15 to 20 mm (50% of cases), and most to the lateral head were 15 to 25 mm (58% of cases). There were no cases of discernable weakness of the FCU after operation. Conclusion: In most cases of cubital tunnel syndrome, there are ulnar nerve branches around the elbow. Although there might be some cases with branches without FCU responses, most branches are to the FCU, and are to be saved. The operator should be watchful for branches about 15 to 25 mm distal to the medial epicondyle, where most branches come out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many neurodegenerative disorders are caused by abnormal accumulation of misfolded proteins. In spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), accumulation of polyglutamine-expanded (polyQ-expanded) ataxin-1 (ATXN1) causes neuronal toxicity. Lowering total ATXN1, especially the polyQ-expanded form, alleviates disease phenotypes in mice, but the molecular mechanism by which the mutant ATXN1 is specifically modulated is not understood. Here, we identified 22 mutant ATXN1 regulators by performing a cross-species screen of 7787 and 2144 genes in human cells and Drosophila eyes, respectively. Among them, transglutaminase 5 (TG5) preferentially regulated mutant ATXN1 over the WT protein. TG enzymes catalyzed cross-linking of ATXN1 in a polyQ-length-dependent manner, thereby preferentially modulating mutant ATXN1 stability and oligomerization. Perturbing Tg in Drosophila SCA1 models modulated mutant ATXN1 toxicity. Moreover, TG5 was enriched in the nuclei of SCA1- affected neurons and colocalized with nuclear ATXN1 inclusions in brain tissue from patients with SCA1. Our work provides a molecular insight into SCA1 pathogenesis and an opportunity for allele-specific targeting for neurodegenerative disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) has become essential for the increase of capacity as the millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered. Also, hybrid beamforming systems have been studied since full-digital beamforming is impractical due to high cost and power consumption of the radio frequency (RF) chains. This paper proposes a hybrid beamforming scheme to improve the spectral efficiency for multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems. In a frequency selective fading environment, hybrid beamforming schemes suffer from performance degradation since the analog precoder performs the same precoding for all subcarriers. To mitigate performance degradation, this paper uses the average channel covariance matrix for all subcarriers and considers an iterative algorithm to design analog precoder using approximation techniques. The analog precoder is iteratively updated for each column until it converges. The proposed scheme can reduce errors in the approximating process of the overall spectral efficiency. This scheme can be applied to fully-connected and partially-connected structures. The simulation results show that spectral efficiency performance for the proposed scheme is better than the conventional schemes. The proposed scheme can achieve similar performance with full-digital beamforming by using a sufficiently large number of RF chains. Also, this paper shows that the proposed scheme outperforms other schemes in the frequency selective fading environment. This performance improvement can be achieved in both structures. In this paper, a novel precoding scheme based on the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method is proposed for downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The GS method iteratively approximates the matrix inversion and reduces the overall complexity of the precoding process. In addition, the GS method shows a fast convergence rate to the Zero-forcing (ZF) method that requires an exact invertible matrix. However, to satisfy demanded error performance and converge to the error performance of the ZF method in the practical condition such as spatially correlated channels, more iterations are necessary for the GS method and increase the overall complexity. For efficient approximation with fewer iterations, this paper proposes a weighted GS (WGS) method to improve the approximation accuracy of the GS method. The optimal weights that accelerate the convergence rate by improved accuracy are computed by the least square (LS) method. After the computation of weights, the different weights are applied for each iteration of the GS method. In addition, an efficient method of weight computation is proposed to reduce the complexity of the LS method. The simulation results show that bit error rate (BER) performance for the proposed scheme with fewer iterations is better than the GS method in spatially correlated channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the supervised Deep Neural Network (DNN) based signal detection is analyzed for combating with nonlinear distortions efficiently and improving error performances in clipping based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) ssystem. One of the main disadvantages for the OFDM is the high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR). The clipping is a simple method for the PAPR reduction. However, an effect of the clipping is nonlinear distortion, and estimations for transmitting symbols are difficult despite a Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection at the receiver. The DNN based online signal detection uses the offline learning model where all weights and biases at fullyconnected layers are set to overcome nonlinear distortions by using training data sets. Thus, this paper introduces the required processes for the online signal detection and offline learning, and compares error performances with the ML detection in the clipping-based OFDM systems. In simulation results, the DNN based signal detection has better error performance than the conventional ML detection in multi-path fading wireless channel. The purpose of this article is to examine the determinants of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the airline industry by applying the conceptual framework of upper echelon theory. Based on this theory, certain attributes of managers—such as age, tenure, fonnal education level, share ownership, and stock options—are hypothesized to have an impact on CSR decisions. Furthermore, rather than considering only the chief executive officer's characteristics, the entire top management team (TMT) is taken into account to draw more robust conclusions. Data are collected from 13 publicly traded airlines in the US stock market from 1998 to 2013 and analyzed by panel feasible generalized squares. Based on the findings, the TMT's average age and the value of stock options held by the TMT are key in accounting for CSR decisions. Researchers have criticized the traditional contingent valuation method (CVM) due to its potential response bias. To address this bias, several studies have employed improved CVM survey designs. When respondents disguise the truth, non-sampling errors are created that cannot be corrected by these elaborate survey modifications. To reduce this type of non-sampling error, Park and MacLachlan (2008) suggested the exaggeration bias-corrected (EBC) CVM, which assumes a functional mechanism between real and spurious willingness to pay (WTP). The authors verify the effectiveness of the EBC-CVM in non-sampling error reduction, which in turn derives more error-corrected economic value. Few studies have employed the EBC-CVM in a tourism context. The main goals of this study are to introduce EBC-CVM and to test its validity in a tourism study. As a particular type of wetlands, mudflats are a potentially valuable natural resource that has become an alternative destination for nature- based tourism. One prominent example of using mudflats in a tourism context is the Boryeong Mud Festival. To understand the role of the touristic experience in shaping the need for preservation, this study: (a) examines the effect of experiences in a nature-based festival on visitors' willingness-to-pay (WTP) to preserve mudflats; and (b) estimates the preservation value of mudflats by using a contingent evaluation method. In particular, the perceived value of festival experiences is included in the proposed models when estimating visitors' WTP. The results indicate that the experience of festival visitors was positively associated with WTP by showing that festival visitors perceived a higher level of utility for preserving mudflats as the functional value of festival experience increased. Based on the error-reduced WTP results, the average respondents' WTP and the annual aggregate preservation value of mudflats were estimated at KRW 11,039 (US$8.64) and KRW 22,818 million (US$17.85 million), respectively. Systematic risk, or the variance of asset returns that cannot be eliminated through diversification of a portfolio, has received limited attention from tourism researchers. This is problematic given the dramatic changes experienced by the industry in the last two decades and the fact that there are unique determinants of systematic risk owing to the tourism industry's idiosyncratic business environment. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to identify financial/ operating determinants that influence systematic risk for online travel agencies (OTAs). Panel data from 10 US OTA companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange Index from 2001 through 2010 were analysed via a two-way, random-effects model using generalized least squares. The results indicate that advertising expenditures, liquidity and firm size are significant determinants of the systematic risk of OTAs. Appropriate financial/operating management for all three determinants are recommended to decrease that risk. ELISA-based devices are promising tools for the detection of low abundant proteins in biological samples. Reductions of the sample volume and assay time as well as full automation are required for their potential use in point-of-care diagnostic applications. Here, we present a highly efficient lab-on-a-disc composed of a TiO2 nanofibrous mat for sensitive detection of serum proteins with a broad dynamic range, with only 10 μL of whole blood within 30 min. The TiO2 nanofibers provide high specific surface area as well as active functional groups to capture large amounts of antibodies on the surface. In addition, the device offers efficient mixing and washing for improving the signal-to-noise ratio, thus enhancing the overall detection sensitivity. We employ the device for the detection of cardiac biomarkers, C-reactive protein (CRP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI), spiked in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as well as in serum or whole blood. The device exhibited a wide dynamic range of six orders of magnitude from 1 pg mL-1 (∼8 fM) to 100 ng mL-1 (∼0.8 pM) and a low detection limit of 0.8 pg mL-1 (∼6 fM) for CRP spiked in CRP-free serum and a dynamic range of 10 pg mL-1 (∼0.4 pM) to 100 ng mL-1 (∼4 nM) with a detection limit of 37 pg mL-1 (∼1.5 pM) for cTnI spiked in whole blood. Recently, there has been increased interest in electrospun-titanium dioxide nanofibers (TiO2 NFs) as antibacterial agents owing to their advantages, such as simple and cost-effective fabrication processes, and high surface areas. However, the photocatalytic effects of TiO2 NFs are relatively low because of their low-ordered crystalline structure, and the antibacterial effect is only effective under UV illumination owing to their large band-gap energy. In this paper, we have demonstrated a significantly enhanced antibacterial activity of hierarchical anatase TiO2 NFs against Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of UV light. Furthermore, the uniform deposition of a large quantity of Ag nanoparticles on the surface of the TiO2 NFs ensured a significant enhancement of the antibacterial performance, even under dark conditions. These results were obtained by exploiting the enhanced photocatalytic effect achieved through control of the crystallinity, as well as the enhanced surface area of the nanomaterials. In this study, we developed an efficient and practical procedure for the synthesis of tetra-substituted Δ5-2-oxopiperazine that mimics the bioactive β-turn structural motif of proteins. This synthetic route is robust and modular enough to accommodate four different substituents to obtain a high level of molecular diversity without any deterioration in stereochemical enrichment of the natural and unnatural amino acids. Through the in silico studies, including a distance calculation of side chains and a conformational overlapping of our model compound with a native β-turn structure, we successfully demonstrated the conformational similarity of tetra-substituted Δ5-2-oxopiperazine to the β-turn motif. For the library construction in a high-throughput manner, the fluorous tag technology was adopted with the use of a solution-phase parallel synthesis platform. Purpose: Breastfeeding is ideal diet for young infant and worldwidely recommended by many guidelines of authoritative centers. We investigated breastfeeding rate of young infant during recent 6-year in Korea and analyzed the tendency of it. Methods: The subjectives were young infants whose mothers registered in childcare database of Mail dairies Co., Ltd. We surveyed exclusive breast feeding rate, mixed feeding rate, exclusive artificial milk feeding rate and ever breastfed rate at 1st week after birth and every months of age from the first to sixth months and assessed the changes of them during recent 6-year (2007-2012) in Korea. Results: During the recent 6-year (2007-2012), the means of exclusive breastfeeding rates from the birth to 6th month in age were 34% for 1 week, 38% for 1 month, 42% for 2 months, 39% for 3 months, 33% for 4 months, 27% for 5 months and 25% for 6 months. The exclusive breastfeeding rate had been increased at 1 week, 1 month, 4 to 6 months aged infants during the recent 6-year. The mixed feeding rate had not been changed significantly and the exclusive artificial milk feeding rate had been decreased. Also, ever breastfed rate had been increased at 1 week to 2 months aged infants and had not been changed significantly at 4 to 6 months aged infants. Conclusion: The young infant's breastfeeding rate in Korea had been increased in recent 6-year from 2007 to 2012 and should be further increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a direct metal patterning method by a two-step transfer printing process of non-particle, ionic metal nano-ink solution. This fabrication method allows a simple direct patterning of various micro/nanoscale metallic structures. Complex structures such as multilayer line arrays, patterns along non-flat topologies, and micro/nanoscale hybrid patterns can be achieved by using this process. Also, the low temperature and pressure process conditions are compatible with the fabrication of electronic structures and devices on flexible substrates such as polyimide film and photographic papers. As an application of this process, we fabricated ZnO nanowire-based flexible UV sensors, where metal electrodes were fabricated by two-step transfer printing. In the case of ZnO nanowire sensors, highly sensitive and fast responding performances to UV illumination and good mechanical robustness against repeated bending conditions could be verified. BACKGROUND. The aging face loses the tensile strength of structural integrity. Cog threads have been used recently to tighten lax skin and soft tissue. OBJECTIVE. A comparative study of the effects of cog, monofilament, and multifilament threads under rat skin. METHODS. Each cog, monofilament, and multifilament thread was inserted under the facial skin of a cadaver and the panniculus carnosus of rat dorsal skin. The maximum holding strength (MHS) of the thread and the tearing strength of the skin around the thread were measured with a tensiometer. The thickness of the capsule around the thread and the myofibroblasts was observed histologically. RESULTS. In the cadaver, the MHS of the cog thread was 190.7 ± 65.6 g. It was greater than that of the monofilament (22.4 ± 7.7 g) or multifilament (40.4 ± 19.7 g) thread. In the rat, the MHS of the cog thread was 95.1 ± 18.8 g. It was greater than that of the monofilament (4.3 ± 1.3 g) or multifilament (10.9 ± 2.1 g) thread in the second week. The thickness of the capsule around the cog thread was 93.0 ± 3.2 μm. It was thicker than the monofilament thread's capsule, 39.2 ± 12.1 μm, in the fourth week. The number of myofibroblasts presented significantly more in the cog (96.0 ± 72.4) than in the monofilament thread (4.3 ± 4.4). The rumpled in-between skin suspended by each of the three different threads returned to its original state in 2 weeks. CONCLUSION. The cog thread placed under the rat skin immediately pulled the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The myofibroblasts around the thread played a role in fibrous tissue contracture 4 weeks postinsertion of the thread. These findings could be the basis for clinical application. Background/Aims Despite the proven benefit of the guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), it remains underutilized in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure (HF). We aimed to evaluate the impact of the discharge checklist on GDMT installation and the prognosis of HF patients. Methods This study was a single-center, observational study that included all patients admitted for HF from March 2021 to February 2023. The data were retrieved from electronic medical records and discharge checklists. A comparison was conducted between the checklist group and the non-checklist group. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality or readmission for HF within 6 months. Results The checklist was completed for 537 patients (checklist group) and not for 187 patients (non-checklist group). The proportion of patients to whom two or more components of GDMT were prescribed was significantly higher in the checklist group than in the non-checklist group (59.6% vs 42.2%, p < 0.001). The checklist group exhibited a significantly lower primary outcome compared to the non-checklist group (27.4% vs. 36.4%, HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.55–0.98, p = 0.036). The effect of the checklist was more prominent in HF with reduced ejection fraction (HR 0.51, 95% CI 0.34–0.77, p = 0.001) than in HF with mildly-reduced and preserved ejection fraction (HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.58–1.42, p = 0.676) (p for interaction = 0.06). Conclusions The implementation of the discharge checklist was associated with an improvement in GDMT prescription and an improved prognosis in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction.
